The Wonders of Physics -- Public Outreach (Final Technical Report)

The mission of The Wonders of Physics (TWoP) outreach program is to generate interest in physics among people of all ages and backgrounds. The objective is to generate interest in physics, increase appreciation for the significance of physics in our lives, and encourage children to consider careers in science and plasma physics. The primary means for achieving that objective is to make entertaining presentations to audiences that would not normally be motivated to attend a lecture on physics or plasmas, while at the same time introducing some of the fundamental concepts and applications. During this reporting period, the students Michael Hall, Megan Tabbutt and Connor Sullivan, Director of Communications Sarah Perdue, Director of Undergraduate Program Jim Reardon, and Senior Information Processing Consultant Paul Wilhite worked to make outreach programs a success and prepare for the future of The Wonders of Physics, which will continue. Because of the curtailment of public events due to Covid-19, there will not be an in person Annual Show or Physics Fair in 2021, but a video competition has already been announced and planning continues for The Wonders of Physics in 2022 and beyond. The annual shows and Physics Fair are scheduled for February 12-13 and February 19-20, 2022. These continue to be our premier outreach events, engaging diverse audiences in real hands-on science. Further shows and exploration stations are planned.

Public – Private Partnership to Promote Efficient Manufacturing and Workforce Development (IAC Final Technical Report)

Through delivering ninety (90) energy assessments to small- and medium-sized manufacturing facilities in and around Tennessee, significant understandings were gained through providing detailed energy assessment reports to manufacturers and training seventy-seven (77) engineering students in which thirty-five (35) certified IAC students were recognized by DOE. The robust involvement of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), local utility and Tennessee Tech’s Cybersecurity Education, Research, and Outreach Center (CEROC) in majority of assessments made the technical operation very effective where leaded to 40.5% implementation rate of energy recommendations. Other benefits of the award to the public are a dynamic modeling tool capable of analyzing existing cooling towers for energy use optimization was developed and presented to DOE IAC, providing technical assistance to non-participating manufacturers in the form of workshop and training, publishing fifteen (15) peer-reviewed conference and journal papers as well as a book chapter in the area of industrial energy efficiency field, assisting the TVA Magnolia Combined Cycle Power Plant to become the First 50001 Ready Certified Power Plant in the U.S. through briefing them on ISO 50001 and 50001 Ready as well as providing an energy assessment to the plant, assisted the new IAC center at Clemson University with on-site and remote support, and provided assessment and training in unique areas of water, waste water, cyber security and smart manufacturing to our clients, students and community.

Transforming Public Housing with Deep Energy Retrofits

Open Market ESCO’s (OME) Transforming Public Housing through Deep Energy Retrofits project demonstrated new design and financing solutions for implementing deep energy retrofits (DERs) in occupied low-income multifamily housing. The Project performed an integrated project delivery process, including designing low-carbon retrofit solution packages, construction pricing, and financing. The Project developed a constructible and financeable DER scope for a 102-unit extremely low-income multifamily property in Boston. This Project demonstrated a replicable approach for streamlining and implementing DER projects in occupied housing, including real solutions for overcoming design complexities and cost barriers.

Models for Incorporating Equity in Transportation Electrification Considerations for Public Utility Regulators, An addendum to the NARUC report, Electric Vehicles: Key Trends, Issues, and Considerations for State Regulators

Momentum for the electric vehicle (EV) transition is well underway, and the utility sector plays an important role in supporting its success. For frontline communities, the transition offers a promising solution to improve environmental and public health outcomes, economic development, affordability, and transit equity. However, the transition will need to involve care and intention to ensure that the needs of underserved communities are prioritized throughout the planning, decision-making, and implementation processes. States have taken the lead in some cases, as profiled in Box 6. Whether driven by state commissions or utilities themselves, utilities have a range of options available to ensure equity is central in their transportation electrification plans and programs by drawing from a variety of existing and emerging experiences, as summarized in Table 1.

Integrating Microtransit with Public Transit for Coordinated Multi-Modal Movement of People (Final Technical Report)

This project focused on potential benefits of mobility service providers and transit agencies cooperating to offer fully integrated, seamless multi-modal mobility services for commuters. Specifically, we aimed at developing a first/last mile microtransit and micromobility services tightly integrated with fixed-route transit to achieve the “point-to-point” service capability. Our goal was to provide fixed-route transit customers with two convenient and compelling options for accessing public transit that are also operational efficient.

AI Driven Optimization of Public Transit

This project explores the application of AI-driven methods to optimize public transit operations for the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA). By leveraging data analytics, machine learning, and predictive modeling, the initiative seeks to enhance system efficiency, improve rider experience, and support sustainability goals. This research, supported by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Energy, integrates real-time transit data with advanced computational tools to inform decision-making, optimize routes, and balance operational demands. The work exemplifies a forward-looking model for mid-sized cities aiming to modernize mobility systems through intelligent technology integration.
