Machine learning prediction on the fractional free volume of polymer membranes

Fractional free volume (FFV) characterizes the microstructural level features of polymers and affects their properties including thermal, mechanical, and separation performance. Experimental measurements and theoretical analyses have been used to quantify the FFV of polymers, but challenges remain because of their limitations. Experimental measurements are laborious and based on semi empirical equations, while Bondi’s group contribution theory involves ambiguities like the determination of van der Waals volume and the choice of factor values in the theoretical equation. To efficiently evaluate the FFV of polymers, this study utilizes high-throughput molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to build a large dataset regarding polymer’s FFV. Based on this large dataset, we further build machine learning (ML) models to establish the composition-structure relation. Inspired by group contribution theory which correlates polymer’s functional groups to FFV, our ML models correlate polymer’s substructures or physico-chemical indexes to FFV. Here, our study first benchmarks the MD simulation protocol to obtain reliable FFV of polymers and then carries out high-throughput MD simulations for more than 6,500 homopolymers and 1,400 polyamides. Such a large and diverse dataset makes the well-trained ML models more generalizable, compared with the group contribution theory. The efficiency of a feed forward neural network model is further demonstrated by applying it to a hypothetical polyimide dataset of more than 8 million chemical structures. The predicted FFVs of hypothetical polyimides are further validated by MD simulations. The obtained FFVs of the 8 million polymers, plus their previously reported gas separation performances, demonstrate the promising capability of ML virtual screening for the discovery of polymer membranes with exceptional permeability/selectivity.

Synthesis and characteristics of poly/bisdichloromaleimides/

The characteristics of six bisdichloromaleimides with different aromatic structures are investigated. The compounds are prepared by reacting 2,3-dichloromaleic anhydride with 1,5-diaminonaphthaline; bis (m-aminophenyl)methylphosphine oxide; 2,5-bis (p-aminophenyl) 1,3,4-oxadiazole; 3,3-bis (p-aminophenyl)phthalide; 9,9-bis (p-aminophenyl) fluorene; 10,10-bis (p-aminophenyl)anthrone. Dynamic thermogravity is used to determine the effect of structural differences on the thermal characteristics of these compounds. These compounds are polymerized by nucleophilic displacement of chlorine with 9,9-bis (p-aminophenyl)fluorene. The polymers are then characterized by IR spectroscopy and reduced viscosity measurements. The anaerobic char yields of these polymers at 800 C are found to range from 55-60%. A complete loss of weight is observed between 600-650 C in the presence of air. In addition, the thermal cross-linking of these polymers is investigated.

Thin-film composite membranes based on hyperbranched poly(ethylene oxide) for CO 2 /N 2 separation

Cross-linked amorphous poly(ethylene oxide) (XLPEO) is one of the leading membrane materials for post-combustion CO 2 capture. For example, XLPEO prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) exhibited CO 2 permeability of 570 Barrer and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 41 at 35 °C. However, these XLPEOs cannot be dissolved in coating solutions, making it impossible to be fabricated into thin-film composite (TFC) membranes using state-of-the-art manufacturing processes. In this study, we synthesized high molecular weight yet soluble HPEO via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). These polymers were thoroughly characterized and compared with XLPEO, including thermal transitions, free volumes, and pure-gas sorption and permeation properties. A polymer with the best combination of CO 2 permeability (540 Barrer) and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity (43) was fabricated into defect-free TFC membranes with a thickness as thin as 506 ± 44 nm. When challenged with simulated flue gas containing water vapor at 35 °C for over 100 h, the membrane shows stable CO 2 permeance of 850 GPU and CO 2 /N 2 selectivity of 37, comparable to the leading commercial membranes for carbon capture.

Electron Transport in Polymerized Cytochrome Appendages

This project has been aimed at understanding the mechanism of long-range electron transport in extracellular cytochrome polymers. Starting with the initial discovery of OmcS filaments in Geobacter sulfurreducens, the three laboratories supported by this award characterized the extracellular polymers of two other cytochromes, OmcE and OmcZ. The overall work showed that the predominant view that existed, that these extracellular filaments were type IV pili, was completely wrong.

X-ray Scintillating Lanthanide-Based Coordination Polymers

Reported are the syntheses and characterization of 25 lanthanide-containing coordination polymers exhibiting four structure types: type I′: [Ln(TFTP) 1.5 (bpy)] (Ln = La 3+ –Nd 3+ ), type I: [Ln(TFTP) 1.5 (bpy)(H 2 O)] (Ln = Sm 3+ –Lu 3+ ), type II′: [Pr(TFTP) 1.5 (phen)], and type II: [Ln(TFTP) 1.5 (phen)(H 2 O)] (Ln = Nd 3+ –Yb 3+ , excluding Pm). These compounds feature lanthanide metal cations bound to tetrafluoroterephthalate linkers (TFTP) and either, 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) capping ligands. Initial calculations using crystallographic data revealed large void spaces, ranging from 86 Å 3 in type I to 333 Å 3 in type II. Yet, adsorption isotherm data indicate very little gas uptake of both materials with a BET surface area of 9 m 2 /g for I-Tb (8) and 19 m 2 /g for II-Tb (20). X-ray irradiation of I-Eu (6), II-Eu (18), I-Tb (8), and II-Tb (20) produced visible red and green emission, respectively. Furthermore, radioluminescence studies of both type I and II with Sm 3+ , Eu 3+ , and Tb 3+ metal centers indicate that both structure types featuring Tb 3+ are brighter than those with Eu 3+ or Sm 3+ . Notably, structure type I with Tb 3+ is the brightest scintillator with a relative luminosity of 1.7× that of bismuth germanate (BGO).

Determining sulfur speciation in oxidatively crosslinked degradable polymers using sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

A new family of water-degradable elastic polymers prepared by oxidative crosslinking of the parent polythionolactones shows promise in a broad range of applications, but the compositions of these materials elude conventional analytical methods. Here, in this work, we use sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy to quantify the amounts of thioether, disulfide, sulfone, sulfate ester, and thionoester in each polymer and to rule out the presence of several other functional groups, including sulfonate, thiosulfonate, sulfate, and sulfoxide. We rationalize this speciation as a function of linker flexibility in the context of sulfinyl cycloaddition reactions and propose a mechanism of aggregation for the oxidized polymers. Our results correlate with swelling ratios but not with porosity nor crosslink density measurements, demonstrating the importance of pairing mechanical and chemical techniques when characterizing heterogeneous organic polymers. Finally, we take advantage of the proximity of the gold M 4,5 -edges to the sulfur K-edge to analyze the binding and reactivity of Au(III) with the crosslinked polymers.

Self-Driving Laboratory for Polymer Electronics

Owing to the chemical pluripotency and viscoelastic nature of electronic polymers, polymer electronics have shown unique advances in many emerging applications such as skin-like electronics, large-area printed energy devices, and neuromorphic computing devices, but their development period is years-long. Recent advancements in automation, robotics, and learning algorithms have led to a growing number of self-driving (autonomous) laboratories that have begun to revolutionize the development and accelerated discovery of materials. In this perspective, we first introduce the current state of autonomous laboratories. Then we analyze why it is challenging to conduct polymer electronics research by an autonomous laboratory and highlight the needs. Here, we further discuss our efforts in building an autonomous laboratory, namely Polybot, for the automated synthesis and characterization of electronic polymers and their processing and fabrication into electronic devices. Finally, we share our vision in using a self-driving laboratory for different types of polymer electronics research.

Synthesis and exceptional operational durability of polyaniline-inspired conductive ladder polymers

Ladder-type structures can impart exceptional stability to polymeric electronic materials. This article introduces a new class of conductive polymers featuring a fully ladder-type backbone. A judicious molecular design strategy enables the synthesis of a low-defect ladder polymer, which can be efficiently oxidized and acid-doped to achieve its conductive state. The structural elucidation of this polymer and the characterization of its open-shell nature are facilitated with the assistance of studies on small molecular models. An autonomous robotic system is used to optimize the conductivity of the polymer thin film, achieving over 7 mS cm −1 . Impressively, this polymer demonstrates unparalleled stability in strong acid and under harsh UV-irradiation, significantly surpassing commercial benchmarks like PEDOT:PSS and polyaniline. Moreover, it displays superior durability across numerous redox cycles as the active material in an electrochromic device and as the pseudocapacitive material in a supercapacitor device. This work provides structural design guidance for durable conductive polymers for long-term device operation.

Enhanced Optical Contrast and Switching in Near‐Infrared Electrochromic Devices by Optimizing Conjugated Polymer Oligo(Ethylene Glycol) Sidechain Content and Gel Electrolyte Composition

Abstract A detailed investigation addressing the effects of functionalizing conjugated polymers with oligo(ethylene glycol) (EG n ) sidechains on the performance and polymer‐electrolyte compatibility of electrochromic devices (ECDs) is reported. The electrochemistry for a series of donor‐acceptor copolymers having near‐infrared (NIR)‐optical absorption, where the donor fragment is 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) or an EG n functionalized bithiophene (g2T) and the acceptor fragment is diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) functionalized with branched alkyl or EG n sidechains, is extensively probed. ECDs are next fabricated and it is found that EG n sidechain incorporation must be finely balanced to promote polymer‐electrolyte compatibility and provide efficient ion exchange. Proper electrolyte‐cation pairing and polymer structural tuning affords a 2x increase in optical contrast (from 12% to 24%) and >60x reduction in switching time (from 20 to 0.3 s). Atomic force microscopy (AFM)/grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) characterization of the polymer film morphology/microstructure reveals that an over‐abundance of EG n sidechains generates large polymer crystallites, which can suppress ion exchange. Lastly, time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS) indicates sidechain/electrolyte identity does not influence the electrolyte penetration depth into the films, and EG n sidechain inclusion increases electrolyte cation uptake. The material structural design insight and guidelines regarding the polymer‐electrolyte ion insertion/expulsion dynamics reported here should be of significant utility for developing next‐generation mixed ionic‐electronic conducting materials.

Synthesis and structural properties of a 2D Zn( II ) dodecahydroxy- closo -dodecaborate coordination polymer

Here, in this work, we discuss the synthesis and characterization of a 2D coordination polymer composed of a dianionic perhydroxylated boron cluster, [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ], coordinated to Zn( II )—the first example of a transition metal-coordinated [B 12 (OH) 12 ] 2– compound. This material was synthesized via cation exchange from the starting cesium salt and then subjected to rigorous characterization prior to and after thermal activation. Numerous techniques, including XRD, FTIR, SEM, TGA, and solid-state NMR revealed a 2D coordination polymer composed of sheets of Zn( II ) ions intercalated between planes of boron clusters. The as-synthesized material was then evacuated of solvent via thermal treatment, and atomic-level changes from this transformation were elucidated through a combination of 1D and 2D solid-state NMR analyses of 11 B and 1 H nuclei, suggesting the full removal of coordinated solvent molecules. Evidence also suggested that [B 12 (OH) 12 2– ] can adjust its coordination to Zn( II ) in the solid-state through hemilability of its numerous –OH ligands.
