Towards Automated/Semiautomated Extraction of Faults from Lidar Data

The Pajarito fault system is a complex zone of deformation and a seismically active region nestled within the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico. Numerous laterally discontinuous faults and associated folds and fractures interact in a manner that has important implications for seismic hazards and risk mitigation. Previous efforts have established a foundation for the location of lineaments and structures in the Pajarito fault system; however, ensuring the completeness of the current lineament mapping is required for identifying areas for field validation, evaluating the potential for future seismic activity, and better understanding fault interaction. Assistance with this fault-mapping task via automated or semiautomated techniques as applied to lidar data over a large area of interest is highly desirable. A proof-of-concept processing flow which transforms lidar point-cloud data into a raster of surficial fault candidates is described and illustrated herein. We report these initial results hold great promise toward achieving our ultimate goal.

H-Canyon exhaust tunnel LiDAR data request for information review and release

This request is to release LiDAR data files acquired by SRNL R&D Engineering and H-Area Operations and Engineering while performing scans of the interior of the H-Canyon Exhaust tunnel. LiDAR data includes 3-dimensional (3D) point cloud data sets and panoramic digital images of the interior tunnel wall surfaces. Presently two deployments have been completed, the first in November 2019, Fig. 1, and the second in June of 2020. This request is for the release of the data collected during those two deployments. Detailed information on the deployment and data collected can be found in SRS document C-ESR-H-00072, “November 2019 Initial Deployment of LiDAR”. It is planned to perform ongoing scans at approximately 6-month intervals, the purpose of the deployments is to evaluate the usefulness of the data collected to enable quantitative measurements such as tunnel dimensions and rate of surface erosion and as a precursor to a potential deployment of a LiDAR system on the tunnel inspection crawler.

LiDAR For Heliostat Optical Assessment (Final Report)

This project has sought to develop new uses for surveying-quality Light Detecting and Ranging (LiDAR) 3D scanning sensors in the automatic/autonomous assessment of optical errors in largescale concentrating solar power heliostat fields. Past experiments have demonstrated the ability of a 3D-LiDAR to acquire highly accurate point cloud measurements across several Sandia NSTTF heliostats. The goal of this project is to expand upon this work to see if and how it can be used in large commercial heliostat fields.

Physics-Infused AI/ML Based Digital-Twin Framework for Flow-Induced-Vibration Damage Prediction in a Nuclear Reactor Heat Exchanger

This report summarizes some of the ongoing work related to the development of an expert-elicitation-digital-twin framework for real time damage state prediction in heat exchanger components of a nuclear reactor. The framework is targeted towards predicting damage associated with coupled low cycle fatigue (associated with regular heat-up, cool-down and power operation transients) and high cycle fatigue (associated with flow induced vibration transients). The overall framework will be based on a NoSQL based database, physics-infused-geometry-dependent virtual-sensor data, different AI/ML techniques-based data-driven-predictive-model applications (Apps) and real-time plant sensor measurements available through few existing sensors. Towards this overall goal, this report updates some of the ongoing work, such as on implementation of a NoSQL Database (such as MongoDB), FE based heat transfer analysis of a heat exchanger (e.g. of a PWR steam generator) for generating geometry-dependent virtual sensor data and evaluation of various AI/ML models such as based on multivariate linear regression, ensembled decision-tree based Random-Forest and Gradient-Boosting regression and high-dimensional-kernel-function-transformation based Support-Vector-Machine regression models. The AI/ML models were evaluated for predicting multi-time-series thermal states at thousands of 3D point-clouds

Hybrid AI-ML and FE-based Digital Twin Predictive Modeling Framework for a PWR Coolant System Components: Updates on Multi-Time-Series-3D-Location Dependent Usages Factor Prediction

The long-term operation (LTO) of nuclear power plants (NPP) beyond their original design life of 40 years can lead to more material damage associated with cyclic fatigue under thermal-mechanical loading cycles and associated long-term exposure of reactor material to the deleterious reactor-coolant environments. However, under this LTO condition, the reactor components can still safely operate but may require more frequent Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) of reactor components. Requiring frequent NDE inspections may lead to frequent NPP shutdowns which can lead to power outages and additional NDE inspection cost-related economic loss. The economic loss can be minimized by reducing uncertainty in life estimation of safety-critical pressure boundary components and by implementing a more digital approach such as using upcoming digital-twin (DT) technology for predicting the structural states (e.g., time and location dependent inside/outside thickness temperature, stress, strain, plastic deformation, etc.) and associated fatigue life of a component in real time. The DT framework is based on limited experimental data, Artificial-intelligence (AI)-Machine-Learning (ML) and multiphysics-computationalmechanics such as finite element- (FE) based models. Given the real-time thermal-hydraulic process measurements from several existing plant sensors, the overall goal of the DT framework is to predict the cumulative usages factors or equivalent fatigue lives in real time and at any random 3D location of the components. This includes inaccessible locations such as inside the thickness or location of a component. This prediction can be at thousands to millions of 3D point clouds or locations like conventional FE-based models, but without running an FE model in real time.

Automated Sorghum Phenotyping and Trait Development Platform

There is an urgent need to accelerate energy crop development for the production of renewable transportation fuels from biomass. Our interdisciplinary team developed mobile, ground-based and aerial phenotyping platforms and advanced remote sensing data analysis tools to acquire and process imagery from different types of cameras (e.g. RGB, multispectral, hyperspectral, and thermal sensors) and LiDAR point cloud data in large-scale sorghum field trials during phase 1 of the project. Phase 2 focused on Technology to Market activities to deliver these systems to the market place coupled with targeted research programs to address specific limitations or challenges for these systems.

Neutronics Analysis of Heating and DPA of the Proton Beam Window and Core Vessel Nozzle Neutronics Heating Analysis for the Second Target Station

This reports details the analysis of the heating rates, dpa values and He production in the Proton Beam Window (PBW) assembly and the Core Vessel (CV) nozzle for the preliminary design for the Second Target Station (STS). This analysis focuses on the heating rates in the cooled beltline component of the CV. Neutronics calculations use a detailed unstructured mesh (UM) converted from a CAD model in SpaceClaim of the PBW and CV design of February 2024. The rest of the geometry is taken from the STS master model in constructive solid geometry (CSG). Heating is evaluated for four beam profiles, which are chosen as the most likely to produce the highest heating in the beltline component. The maximum energy deposition values in the beltline are 0.02-0.08 J/cc/pulse, depending on the beam profile. Detailed point cloud data of the full UM geometry is made available for mechanical analysis. The maximum dpa rate in the beltline steel is approximately 0.02 dpa/year, which corresponds to a lifetime of 3,000 years. These results are in good agreement with previous results for the CV. For the PBW itself, maximal heating, dpa, and He production rates are very similar to the previous analysis.
