Wide bandwidth phase-locked loop circuit

A PLL circuit uses a multiple frequency range PLL in order to phase lock input signals having a wide range of frequencies. The PLL includes a VCO capable of operating in multiple different frequency ranges and a divider bank independently configurable to divide the output of the VCO. A frequency detector detects a frequency of the input signal and a frequency selector selects an appropriate frequency range for the PLL. The frequency selector automatically switches the PLL to a different frequency range as needed in response to a change in the input signal frequency. Frequency range hysteresis is implemented to avoid operating the PLL near a frequency range boundary.

Pulsed Phase-Locked-Loop Strain Monitor

P2sup.L2sup. strain monitor measures strain by monitoring change in phase of acoustic signal that passes through stressed sample. Phase sample causes shift in frequency of VCO. As with other monitors of this type, instrument is only accurate in elastic range of material. Monitor is expected to have broad application in materials testing, structural design, fabrication and assembly.

Double phase-lock loop with rapid transient response - A concept

Integration loop, with narrow bandwidth and long response time, integrates phase estimate of sampling loop, resulting in slower but less jittery response to phase step changes. Sampling loop has wide bandwidth and quick response to phase steps of burst sync interval.

Constant frequency pulsed phase-locked loop measuring device

A measuring apparatus is presented that uses a fixed frequency oscillator to measure small changes in the phase velocity ultrasonic sound when a sample is exposed to environmental changes such as changes in pressure, temperature, etc. The invention automatically balances electrical phase shifts against the acoustical phase shifts in order to obtain an accurate measurement of electrical phase shifts.

On higher order discrete phase-locked loops.

An exact mathematical model is developed for a discrete loop of a general order particularly suitable for digital computation. The deterministic response of the loop to the phase step and the frequency step is investigated. The design of the digital filter for the second-order loop is considered. Use is made of the incremental phase plane to study the phase error behavior of the loop. The model of the noisy loop is derived and the optimization of the loop filter for minimum mean-square error is considered.

Optical Phase-Locked Loop For Optical Communication

Experimental apparatus includes two diode-pumped solid-state lasers of non-planar-ring-oscillator type, one represents the transmitting oscillator, other local oscillator in receiver. Output of transmitting oscillator is amplitude-modulated with pulse-position-modulated data stream. Phase-error variance of less than 0.05 mrad(Sup 2) achieved with relatively-narrow-band loop. Applications include free-space and fiber-optic communications, navigation, and scientific instrumentation in which receivers are required to track phases of transmitted signals.

Pulsed phase locked loop strain monitor

The RF output of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) is periodically gated to a transducer which produces acoustic waves in a bolt. The reflected acoustic waves are converted to electrical signals by the transducer and gated to a mixer which also receives the output from the VCO and produces an output which is filtered by a low pass filter. The output of filter is a dc signal proportional to the phase difference change from a fixed phase difference between the two input signals to the mixer. This dc signal is sampled at an instant and held by circuit in response to the "P" signal. The output of the circuit is integrated and then applied to the VCO to change the frequency of the VCO such that the phase difference between the two inputs to the mixer remains at the fixed phase difference. The frequency of the VCO is a measure of the change in strain of the bolt.

Optical phase-locked loop (OPLL) for free-space laser communications with heterodyne detection

Several advantages of coherent free-space optical communications are outlined. Theoretical analysis is formulated for an OPLL disturbed by shot noise, modulation noise, and frequency noise consisting of a white component, a 1/f component, and a 1/f-squared component. Each of the noise components is characterized by its associated power spectral density. It is shown that the effect of modulation depends only on the ratio of loop bandwidth and data rate, and is negligible for an OPLL with loop bandwidth smaller than one fourth the data rate. Total phase error variance as a function of loop bandwidth is displayed for several values of carrier signal to noise ratio. Optimal loop bandwidth is also calculated as a function of carrier signal to noise ratio. An OPLL experiment is performed, where it is shown that the measured phase error variance closely matches the theoretical predictions.

Third-order phase-locked loop receiver

Third-order extension to present second-order systems extends their Doppler tracking capabilities. It widens receiver pull-in range, decreases pull-in time, lowers voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) noise (determining when no signal is present), and lessens susceptibility to VCO drift.

Narrow band binary phase locked loops

Very high Q digital filtering circuits for audio frequencies in the range of 1Hz to 15 KHz are implemented in simple CMOS hardware using a binary local reference clock frequency. The circuits have application to VLF navigation receivers and other narrow band audio range tracking problems.
