The requirements for automatic longitudinal control of a string of closely packed personal vehicles are outlined. Optimal control theory is used to design feedback controllers for strings of vehicles. An important modification of the usual optimal control scheme is the inclusion of jerk in the cost functional. While the inclusion of the jerk term was considered, the effect of its inclusion was not sufficiently studied. Adding the jerk term will increase passenger comfort.
A study was made of the benefits reported by participants in a health evaluation and enhancement program dealing with physical activity. Program benefits were identified and defined in regard to three major areas: program effects on work; program effects on health; and program effects on habits and behavior. A strong positive and consistent relationship was found between reported benefits in each of these areas and measures of improvement in cardiovascular functioning based on treadmill performance. Significant differences in these measures of improvement were also found between participants who reported program benefits and those persons who did not. These findings provide a meaningful profile of the pattern of benefits generated by this kind of health program.
Personality and demographic correlates, as well as physical correlates, of ride-quality judgements in a field situation namely, in selected passenger-train ride segments, were identified and investigated.
A method for locating any person in distress in a selected area on the surface of the earth who has deployed passive radio frequency (RF) reflectors in a predetermined arrangement is analyzed. A first transparency is made in the spatial frequency domain of an image of said predetermined arrangement of said RF reflectors. The said selected area of the surface of the earth is scanned by means of a side-looking radar, on board a satellite or aircraft, to produce radar images. Second transparencies in the conventional image domain are produced from the radar images. It is then determined from the first and second transparencies, by means of complex spatial filtering.
Design of a portable personal cooling system to reduce physiological stress in high-temperature, high-humidity conditions is discussed. The system, based on technology used in the thermal controls of space suits, employs a combination of head and thoracic insulation and cooling through a heat sink unit. Average metabolic rates, heart rates, rectal temperature increase and sweat loss were monitored for test subjects wearing various configurations of the cooling system, as well as for a control group. The various arrangements of the cooling garment were found to provide significant physiological benefits; however, increases in heat transfer rate of the cooling unit and more effective insulation are suggested to improve the system's function.
Losses of various nutrients through sweat of persons working under hot conditions were considered. On the basis of these considerations a supplemental drink was formulated consisting of 1 liter of water per hour containing salt, potassium chloride, iron, thiamine and ascorbic acid.
Citations to published work, personality, and demographic characteristics were examined in a sample of male and female academic psychologists. A large sex difference was found in citations with men receiving significantly more recognition. Reputational rankings of graduate school and current institution were significantly related to citations, as were components of achievement motivation. Mastery and work needs were positively related to citations while competitiveness was negatively associated with the criterion. A model of attainment in psychology is proposed and possible explanations for the differential recognition of women are explored.
Recent developments related to microprocessor-based personal computers have made low-cost digital image processing systems a reality. Image analysis systems built around these microcomputers provide color image displays for images as large as 256 by 240 pixels in sixteen colors. Descriptive statistics can be computed for portions of an image, and supervised image classification can be obtained. The systems support Basic, Fortran, Pascal, and assembler language. A description is provided of a system which is representative of the new microprocessor-based image processing systems currently on the market. While small systems may never be truly independent of larger mainframes, because they lack 9-track tape drives, the independent processing power of the microcomputers will help alleviate some of the turn-around time problems associated with image analysis and display on the larger multiuser systems.
Cape Observatory transit circle measurements of systematic trends in the semi-diameter of the sun (1834, 1861-1871, 1884-1892) are considered, and an analysis of Washington six inch observations (1899-1903, 1911-1918, 1956-1971, 1975-1981) is given. A discordance between horizontal and vertical results in Cape measurements implies that these measurements are inaccurate due to the use of personal equations. The Washington measurements consider observational corrections and instrumental techniques, and it is thus concluded that no secular change in solar diameter has occurred.
The duality approach, which is motivated by computational needs and is done by introducing N + 1 Language multipliers is addressed. For N-person linear quadratic games, the primal min-max problem is shown to be equivalent to the dual min-max problem.
The equilibrium strategy for N-person differential games can be found by studying a min-max problem subject to differential systems constraints. The differential constraints are penalized and finite elements are used to compute numerical solutions. Convergence proof and error estimates are given. Numerical results are also included and compared with those obtained by the dual method.
Personal experience with the PVHD indicates that it should have great promise in easing cockpit workload, improving situational awareness, and reducing spatial disorientation. It should not be assumed that the PVHD will automatically cue the pilot to his attitude without some training or exposure. Some measure of attention needs to be devoted to attitude although this can easily be accomplished by the peripheral visual fields without tying up central vision. The PVHD would appear useful in any aircraft that flies in spatially disorienting/misorienting conditions, such as night, weather, or formation. It would appear to be particularly useful in aircraft, that by their design, are especially disorienting in such circumstances.
A computer programmed flutter solution has been written in the BASIC language for a personal computer. The program is for two degree-of-freedom bending torsion flutter applications and utilizes two dimensional Theodorsen aerodynamics. The aerodynamics were modified to include approximations for Mach number (compressibility) effects and aspect ratio (finite span) effects. Input options, user instructions, program listing, and a test case application are included.
