Fire-Retardant Decorative Inks For Aircraft Interiors

Report describes testing of commercial and experimental fire retardants for incorporation into acrylic printing inks used on aircraft-interior sandwich panels. Films of acrylic ink containing fire-retardant additives prepared by casting on glass plates. Solvent evaporated in vacuum, cast films cured at 80 to 100 degree C for 30 minutes in air-circulating oven. Thermochemical properties of films examined by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Samples of inks cast on sheets of polyvinylfloride (PVF), and their limiting oxygen indices and smoke evolution measured.

Effect of long-term thermal aging on coated Celion/LARC-160 composites

Coated and uncoated unidirectional laminates of Celion (Trademark)/LARC-160 graphite/polyimide were thermally aged in air at temperatures of 204, 260, and 316 C for various times up to 15,000 hours. Selected panels were coated with a high temperature coating resin (polyphenyl quinoxaline--PPQ): 1) edges only; 2) top and bottom only; 3)completely; or 4) not at all. Periodically during aging, panels were removed from the ovens, weighed, and short beam shear (SBS) specimens cut from selected locations in the panels. The protective coating did not influence the retention of SBS strength during thermal aging but did not lessen the amount of weight-loss incurred. The integrity of the PPQ coating was completely destroyed during aging at 316 C.

Evaluation of a thermoplastic polyimide (422) for bonding GR/PI composite

A hot-melt processable copolyimide previously studied and characterized as an adhesive for bonding Ti-6Al-4V was used to bond Celion 6000/LARC-160 composite. Comparisons are made for the two adherend systems. A bonding cycle was determined for the composite bonding and lap shear specimens were prepared which were thermally exposed in a forced-air oven for up to 5000 h at 204 C. The lap shear strengths (LSSs) were determined at RT, 177, and 204 C. After thermal exposure at RT, 177, and 204 C the LSS decreased significantly; however, a slight increase was noted for the 204 C tests. Initially the LSS values are higher for the bonded Ti-6Al-4V than for the bonded composite, however, the LSS decreases dramatically between 5000 and 10,000 h of 204 C thermal exposure. Longer periods of thermal exposure up to 20,000 h results in further decreases in the LSSs. Although the bonded composite retained useful strengths for exposures up to 5000 h, based on the poor results of the bonded Ti-6Al-4V beyond 5000 h, the 422 adhesive bonded composites would most likely also produce poor strengths beyond 5000 h exposure. Adhesive bonded composite lap shear specimens exposed to boiling water for 72 h exhibited greatly reduced strengths at all test temperatures. The percent retained after water boil for each test temperature was essentially the same for both systems.

Theoretical studies of solar-pumped lasers

The investigation of stimulated emission causing transitions from the B(1) pi sub u state of sodium to the overlapping 2(1) sigma(+) sub g electronic state has been continued. A new method of estimating the Franck-Condon factors has been developed which instead of fitting the molecular potential curves with Morse functions, estimates the V(r) dependence by interpolation from given potential curves. The results for the sum of the rates from one vibrational level in the upper state to all the levels in the lower state show good agreement with the previous method, implying that curve crossing by stimulated emission due to photons from the oven is an important mechanism in sodium.

Validation of the filament winding process model

Tests were performed toward validating the WIND model developed previously for simulating the filament winding of composite cylinders. In these tests two 24 in. long, 8 in. diam and 0.285 in. thick cylinders, made of IM-6G fibers and HBRF-55 resin, were wound at + or - 45 deg angle on steel mandrels. The temperatures on the inner and outer surfaces and inside the composite cylinders were recorded during oven cure. The temperatures inside the cylinders were also calculated by the WIND model. The measured and calculated temperatures were then compared. In addition, the degree of cure and resin viscosity distributions inside the cylinders were calculated for the conditions which existed in the tests.

Spectral changes in conifers subjected to air pollution and water stress: Experimental studies

The roles of leaf anatomy, moisture and pigment content, and number of leaf layers on spectral reflectance in healthy, pollution-stressed, and water-stressed conifer needles were examined experimentally. Jeffrey pine (Pinus jeffreyi) and giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron gigantea) were exposed to ozone and acid mist treatments in fumigation chambers; red pine (Pinus resinosa) needles were artificially dried. Infrared reflectance from stacked needles rose with free water loss. In an air-drying experiment, cell volume reductions induced by loss of turgor caused near-infrared reflectance (TM band 4) to drop after most free water was lost. Under acid mist fumigation, stunting of tissue development similarly reduced band 4 reflectance. Both artificial drying and pollutant fumigation caused a blue shift of the red edge of spectral reflectance curves in conifers, attributable to chlorophyll denaturation. Thematic mapper band ratio 4/3 fell and 5/4 rose with increasing pollution stress on artificial drying. Loss of water by air-drying, freeze-drying, or oven-drying enhanced spectral features, due in part to greater scattering and reduced water absorption. Grinding of the leaf tissue further enhanced the spectral features by increasing reflecting surfaces and path length. In a leaf-stacking experiment, an asymptote in visible and infrared reflectance was reached at 7-8 needle layers of red pine.

Differential Curing In Fiber/Resin Laminates

Modified layup schedule counteracts tendency toward delamination. Improved manufacturing process resembles conventional process, except prepregs partially cured laid on mold in sequence in degree of partial cure decreases from mold side to bag side. Degree of partial cure of each layer at time of layup selected by controlling storage and partial-curing temperatures of prepreg according to Arrhenius equation for rate of gel of resin as function of temperature and time from moment of mixing. Differential advancement of cure in layers made large enough to offset effect of advance bag-side heating in oven or autoclave. Technique helps prevent entrapment of volatile materials during manufacturing of fiber/resin laminates.

Space shuttle food system summary, 1981-1986

All food in the Space Shuttle food system was precooked and processed so it required no refrigeration and was either ready-to-eat or could be prepared for consumption by simply adding water and/or heating. A gun-type water dispenser and a portable, suitcase-type heater were used to support this food system during the first four missions. On STS-5, new rehydratable packages were introduced along with a needle-injection water dispenser that measured the water as it was dispensed into the packages. A modular galley was developed to facilitate the meal preparation process aboard the Space Shuttle. The galley initially flew on STS-9. A personal hygiene station, a hot or cold water dispenser, a convection oven, and meal assembly areas were included in the galley.

Characterization of cobalt(II) chloride-modified condensation polyimide films

The effect of solvent extraction on the properties of cobalt(II) chloride-modified polyimide films was investigated. Solvent-cast films were prepared from solutions of cobalt chloride in poly(amide acid)/N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAc) and were subsequently dried and cured in static air, forced air, or inert gas ovens with controlled humidity. The films were extracted by either of the three processes (1) soaking in a tray with distilled water at room temperature, (2) soxhlett extraction with distilled water, or (3) soxhell extraction with DMAc. Extraction with DMAc was found to remove both cobalt and chlorine from the films and to slightly increase bulk thermal stability and both surface resistivity and electrical resistivity.

Reference NO2 calibration system for ground-based intercomparisons during NASA's GTE/CITE 2 mission

An NO2 calibration system, based on a permeation device and a two-stage dynamic dilution system, was designed, constructed, and characterized at the National Bureau of Standards. In this system, calibrant flow entering the second stage was controlled without contacting a metal flow controller, and permeation oven temperature and flow were continuously maintained, even during transport. The system performance and the permeation emission rate were characterized by extensive laboratory tests. This system was capable of accurately delivering known NO2 concentrations in the ppbv and sub-ppbv concentration range with a total uncertainty of approximately 10 percent. The calibration system was placed on board NASA research aircraft at both the Wallops Island and Ames research facilities. There it was employed as the reference standard in NASA's Global Tropospheric Experiment/Chemical Instrumental Test and Evaluation 2 mission in August 1986.

Electrostatic dry powder prepregging of carbon fiber

Ultrafine, 5-10 micron polymer-matrix resin powders are directly applied to carbon fiber tows by passing then in an air or nitrogen stream through an electrostatic potential; the particles thus charged will strongly adhere to grounded carbon fibers, and can be subsequently fused to the fiber in a continuously-fed radiant oven. This electrostatic technique derived significant end-use mechanical property advantages from the obviation of solvents, binders, and other adulterants. Additional matrix resins used to produce prepregs to date have been PMR-15, Torlon 40000, and LaRC TPI.

Study of flexural rigidity of weavable powder-coated towpreg

An effort has been made to weave powder-impregnated tow into a two-dimensional preform, controlling process variables to obtain high flexural rigidity in the warp direction and greater flexibility in the fill direction. The resulting prepregs have been consolidated into laminates with LaRC-TPI matrices. Complementary SEM and DSC studies have been performed to deepen understanding of the relationship between tow flexibility and heat treatment. Attention is also given to the oven temperature and residence time variables' effects on power/fiber fusion.
