Nonlinear optical control of chiral charge pumping in a topological Weyl semimetal

Solids with topologically robust electronic states exhibit unusual electronic and optical properties that do not exist in other materials. A particularly interesting example is chiral charge pumping, the so-called chiral anomaly, in recently discovered topological Weyl semimetals, where simultaneous application of parallel DC electric and magnetic fields creates an imbalance in the number of carriers of opposite topological charge (chirality). Here, using time-resolved terahertz measurements on the Weyl semimetal TaAs in a magnetic field, we optically interrogate the chiral anomaly by dynamically pumping the chiral charges and monitoring their subsequent relaxation of the nonequilibrium state. Theory based on Boltzmann transport shows that the observed effects originate from an optical nonlinearity in the chiral charge pumping process. Our measurements reveal that the nonequilibrium chiral excitation relaxation time is much greater than 1 ns. The observation of terahertz-controlled chiral carriers with long coherence times and topological protection suggests the application of Weyl semimetals for quantum optoelectronic technology.

Revealing charge carrier dynamics and transport in Te-doped GaAsSb and GaAsSbN nanowires by correlating ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy and optoelectronic characterization

Recent advances in the growth of III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) hold great promise for nanoscale optoelectronic device applications. It is established that a small amount of nitrogen (N) incorporation in III-V semiconductor NWs can effectively red-shift their wavelength of operation and tailor their electronic properties for specific applications. Still, understanding the impact of N incorporation on non-equilibrium charge carrier dynamics and transport in semiconducting NWs is critical in achieving efficient semiconducting NW devices. In this work, ultrafast optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy has been used to study non-equilibrium carrier dynamics and transport in Te-doped GaAsSb and dilute nitride GaAsSbN NWs, with the goal of correlating these results with electrical characterization of their equilibrium photo-response under bias and low-frequency noise characteristics. Nitrogen incorporation in GaAsSb NWs led to a significant increase in the carrier scattering rate, resulting in a severe reduction in carrier mobility. Carrier recombination lifetimes of 33 ± 1 picoseconds (ps) and 147 ± 3 ps in GaAsSbN and GaAsSb NWs, respectively, were measured. The reduction in the carrier lifetime and photoinduced optical conductivities are due to the presence of N-induced defects, leading to deterioration in the electrical and optical characteristics of dilute nitride NWs relative to the non-nitride NWs. Finally, we observed a very fast rise time of ~2 ps for both NW materials, directly impacting their potential use as high-speed photodetectors.

Optical evidence of the chiral magnetic anomaly in the Weyl semimetal TaAs

Chiral pumping from optical electric fields oscillating at terahertz frequencies is observed in the Weyl material TaAs with electric and magnetic fields aligned along both the $\textit{a}$ and $\textit{c}$ axes. In this work, free-carrier spectral weight enhancement is measured directly, confirming theoretical expectations of chiral pumping. A departure from linear field dependence of the Drude weight is observed at the highest fields in the quantum limit, providing evidence of field-dependent Fermi velocity of the chiral Landau level. Implications for the chiral magnetic effect in Weyl semimetals from the optical $\textit{f}$-sum rule are discussed.

Wavelength-dependent photodissociation of iodomethylbutane

Ultrashort XUV pulses of the Free-Electron-LASer in Hamburg (FLASH) were used to investigate laser-induced fragmentation patterns of the prototypical chiral molecule 1-iodo-2-methyl-butane (C 5 H 11 I) in a pump-probe scheme. Ion velocity-map images and mass spectra of optical-laser-induced fragmentation were obtained for subsequent FEL exposure with photon energies of 63 eV and 75 eV. These energies specifically address the iodine 4d edge of neutral and singly charged iodine, respectively. The presented ion spectra for two optical pump-laser wavelengths, i.e., 800 nm and 267 nm, reveal substantially different cationic fragment yields in dependence on the wavelength and intensity. For the case of 800-nm-initiated fragmentation, the molecule dissociates notably slower than for the 267 nm pump. The results underscore the importance of considering optical-laser wavelength and intensity in the dissociation dynamics of this prototypical chiral molecule that is a promising candidate for future studies of its asymmetric nature.

High-Peak-Power Long-Wave Infrared Lasers with CO2 Amplifiers

Long-wave infrared (LWIR) picosecond pulses with multi-terawatt peak power have recently become available for advanced high-energy physics and material research. Multi-joule pulse energy is achieved in an LWIR laser system via amplification of a microjoule seed pulse with high-pressure, mixed-isotope CO 2 amplifiers. A chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) scheme is employed in such a laser to reduce the nonlinear interaction between the optical field and the transmissive elements of the system. Presently, a research and development effort is underway towards an even higher LWIR peak power that is required, for instance, for promising particle acceleration schemes. The required boost of the peak power can be achieved by reducing the pulse duration to fractions of a picosecond. For this purpose, the possibility of reducing the gain narrowing in the laser amplifiers and post-compression techniques are being studied. Another direction in research is aimed at the increased throughput (i.e., repetition rate), efficiency, and reliability of LWIR laser systems. The transition from a traditional electric-discharge pumping to an optical pumping scheme for CO 2 amplifiers is expected to improve the robustness of high-peak-power LWIR lasers, making them suitable for broad implementation in scientific laboratory, industrial, and clinical environments.

Noncolinear optical parametric oscillator for broadband nanosecond pulse-burst CARS diagnostics in gases

We report demonstration of broadband nanosecond coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) using a burst-mode-pumped noncolinear optical parametric oscillator (NOPO) has been achieved at a pulse repetition rate of 40 kHz. The NOPO is pumped with the 355-nm output of a burst-mode Nd:YAG laser at 50 mJ/pulse for 45 pulses and produces an output centered near 607 nm, with a bandwidth of 370 cm –1 at energies of 5 mJ/pulse. A planar BOXCARS phase matching scheme uses the broadband NOPO output as the Stokes beam and the narrowband 532-nm burst-mode output for the two CARS pump beams for single-laser-shot nitrogen thermometry in near adiabatic H 2 /air flames at temperatures up to 2200 K.

Disentangling electronic, lattice, and spin dynamics in the chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2

We investigate the static and ultrafast magneto-optical response of the hexagonal chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2 above and below the helimagnetic ordering temperature. The presence of a magnetic easy plane contained within the crystallographic $ab$-plane is confirmed, while degenerate optical pump-probe experiments reveal significant differences in the dynamic between the parent, NbS 2 , and Cr-intercalated compounds. Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements show a two-step demagnetization process, where an initial, subpicosecond relaxation and subsequent buildup (τ > 50ps) in the demagnetization dynamic scale similarly with increasing pump fluence. Despite theoretical evidence for partial gapping of the minority spin channel, suggestive of possible half-metallicity in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , such a long demagnetization dynamic likely results from spin-lattice relaxation as opposed to minority state blocking. However, comparison of the two-step demagnetization process in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 with other 3d intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides reveals a behavior that is unexpected from conventional spin-lattice relaxation, and may be attributed to the complicated interaction of local moments with itinerant electrons in this material system.

Effect of Auger recombination on transient optical properties in XUV and soft X-ray irradiated silicon nitride

Spatially encoded measurements of transient optical transmissivity became a standard tool for temporal diagnostics of free-electron-laser (FEL) pulses, as well as for the arrival time measurements in X-ray pump and optical probe experiments. The modern experimental techniques can measure changes in optical coefficients with a temporal resolution better than 10 fs. This, in an ideal case, would imply a similar resolution for the temporal pulse properties and the arrival time jitter between the FEL and optical laser pulses. However, carrier transport within the material and out of its surface, as well as carrier recombination may, in addition, significantly decrease the number of carriers. This would strongly affect the transient optical properties, making the diagnostic measurement inaccurate. Below we analyze in detail the effects of those processes on the optical properties of XUV and soft X-ray irradiated Si 3 N 4 , on sub-picosecond timescales. Si 3 N 4 is a wide-gap insulating material widely used for FEL pulse diagnostics. Theoretical predictions are compared with the published results of two experiments at FERMI and LCLS facilities, and with our own recent measurement. The comparison indicates that three body Auger recombination strongly affects the optical response of Si 3 N 4 after its collisional ionization stops. By deconvolving the contribution of Auger recombination, in future applications one could regain a high temporal resolution for the reconstruction of the FEL pulse properties measured with a Si 3 N 4 -based diagnostics tool.

Excitonic Interactions and Mechanism for Ultrafast Interlayer Photoexcited Response in van der Waals Heterostructures

Optical dynamics in van der Waals heterobilayers is of fundamental scientific and practical interest. Based on a time-dependent adiabatic GW approach, we discover a new many-electron (excitonic) channel for converting photoexcited intralayer to interlayer excitations and the associated ultrafast optical responses in heterobilayers, which is conceptually different from the conventional single-particle picture. We find strong electron-hole interactions drive the dynamics and enhance the pump-probe optical responses by an order of magnitude with a rise time of ~3⁢0⁢0 fs in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterobilayers, in agreement with experiment.

Ultrafast optical observation of spin-pumping induced dynamic exchange coupling in ferromagnetic semiconductor/metal bilayer

Abstract Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co 2 FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-coupling reveals a primary contribution from the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As.

Ultrafast Optical Nanoscopy of Carrier Dynamics in Silicon Nanowires

Carrier distribution and dynamics in semiconductor materials often govern their physical properties that are critical to functionalities and performance in industrial applications. The continued miniaturization of electronic and photonic devices calls for tools to probe carrier behavior in semiconductors simultaneously at the picosecond time and nanometer length scales. Here, in this paper, we report pump–probe optical nanoscopy in the visible-near-infrared spectral region to characterize the carrier dynamics in silicon nanostructures. By coupling experiments with the point-dipole model, we resolve the size-dependent photoexcited carrier lifetime in individual silicon nanowires. We further demonstrate local carrier decay time mapping in silicon nanostructures with a sub-50 nm spatial resolution. Our study enables the nanoimaging of ultrafast carrier kinetics, which will find promising applications in the future design of a broad range of electronic, photonic, and optoelectronic devices.

Ultrafast dynamics in the high-symmetry and in the charge density wave phase of 2 H –NbSe 2

Here we investigate carrier and collective mode dynamics in 2H-NbSe 2 using time-resolved optical pump-probe spectroscopy and compare the results with first-principles calculations. Broadband ultrafast reflectivity studies of 2H-NbSe 2 in a wide temperature interval covering the normal, charge density wave (CDW) and superconducting phase were performed. Spectral features observed in the transient reflectivity experiment were associated with specific optical transitions obtained from band structure calculations. Displacive excitation of coherent phonons showed CDW-associated coherent oscillations of the soft phonon mode across the whole spectral range. Temperature evolution of this coherent phonon mode in the low-excitation linear regime shows softening of the mode down to the CDW transition temperature T CDW with subsequent hardening below T CDW . The global fit of the broadband probe data reveals four different relaxation times associated with characteristic electron-electron, electron-phonon, and phonon-phonon relaxation processes. From first-principles calculations of electron-phonon coupling we associate the few picosecond electron-phonon relaxation time $\tau_2$ with a specific group of phonons with frequencies around 20 meV. On the other hand, the anomalously long relaxation time of $\tau_3 \sim$ to 100 ps is associated with anharmonicity-driven phonon-phonon scattering. All relaxation processes result from anomalies near the second order CDW phase transition that are reflected in the temperature dependencies of the characteristic relaxation times and amplitudes of coherent oscillations. At the highest fluences we observe electronic melting of the CDW and disappearance of the mode hardening below T CDW .

Raman Wavelength Conversion in Ionic Liquids

Here, we explore the use of room-temperature ionic liquids (ILs) as Raman wavelength converters. ILs provide an engineerable framework to design suitable liquids for wavelength conversion over a broad spectral range, through careful selection of the molecular structures of the IL anions and cations so that specific characteristics can be obtained, such as a desirable Raman shift, low Brillouin scattering, and good optical transmission in the pump and Stokes wavelengths. Applying such criteria, we demonstrate that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide (EMIM DCA) is an effective medium for conversion of 532-nm pulses from a Q-switched Nd :YAG laser to 603 nm. This corresponds to an approximate 2200 cm –1 shift, which can be used to generate mid-infrared radiation through subsequent difference frequency generation for optical pumping of CO 2 lasers. Threefold-higher Raman conversion efficiency is obtained in EMIM DCA compared with water under identical conditions in a proof-of-principle single-pass conversion setup, resulting in an efficient generation of multimillijoule, <6 ns duration, high-quality orange laser pulses in a wavelength region that is difficult to access at high energies. Consequently, we examine ILs representing two other classes of Raman-active functional groups and obtain conversion up to the fifth-order Stokes shift and first anti-Stokes shift. Through the tunable selection of their components and their useful dynamical properties, ILs provide a platform for efficient, simple, and alignment-tolerant high-energy Raman shifting with numerous industrial and technological applications.

Thermal transport across nanoscale damage profile in sapphire irradiated by swift heavy ions

In this work, we studied the degradation of thermal conductivity in single crystal sapphire (α-Al 2 O 3 ) irradiated by 167 MeV Xe swift heavy ions (SHIs) over the multiple fluences in the range of 10 12 –10 14 ions/cm 2 . Thermal conductivity was measured primarily in the cross-plane direction using a noncontact ultrafast optical pump-probe technique called picosecond time domain thermoreflectance (TDTR). Multiple samples with variable ion fluences allowed us to probe distinct regions resulting from different regimes of microstructure evolution caused by electronic energy loss. By tuning the penetration depth of the thermal waves using different modulation frequencies, two regions with distinct conductivities were identified and the values of which were found to be consistent with phonon-mediated thermal transport models while the microstructure was confirmed by electron microscopy characterization. These damaged regions were determined to be a several micrometer thick ion track region and several tens of nanometer-thick amorphous layer present only above 5.0 × 10 13 ions/cm 2 . These results demonstrate the applicability of TDTR to resolve thermal transport behavior in SHI irradiated oxides having nonhomogeneous damage profile on a nanometer scale. The presented approach facilitates future studies aiming at resolving the impact of distinct damage resulting from electronic and nuclear stopping regimes under irradiation.

Observation and origin of multi-THz quantum beats in superfluorescent emission from argon

We report observation of multi-THz quantum beats in the amplitude of superfluorescence in pure argon gas, using a time delayed 780-nm probe beam that interrogates the relevant population densities. The superfluorescence is induced by three-photon absorption of an ultrashort 260.5-nm laser pulse that creates coherent and coupled populations in multiple closely spaced 3⁢d and 5⁢s Ar levels. Argon pressure and pump laser focusing parameters are seen to modify the frequency of the quantum beats, which is attributed to the absorption of the self-generated, nonresonant third harmonic of the pump from Ar near the zero of the real part of the overlapping linear susceptibilities of the closely spaced 3⁢d and 5⁢s excited states. The self-absorption of the phase-matched THG photons creates a coherent population of atoms which acts like an atomic excited state (3⁢ω-induced state). Furthermore, we have also observed a new two-step superfluorescent cascade that results from the population redistribution enabled by the 780-nm probe pulse between the 3⁢d'[5/2] 3 and the 3⁢ω-induced state and gives rise to a previously unknown transition that emits on 1587 nm.
