Measurements of lower stratospheric/upper tropospheric water vapor by the SAGE II instrument

Preliminary, unvalidated data are discussed from early measurements of water vapor profiles in the upper troposphere/lower stratosphere by means of SAGE II satellite sensors. Zonal means for April 1985 are discussed and compared with previous, separate data sets for water vapor profiles for the 100 mbar and 300 mbar levels determined from space-based IR and rawinsonde data. Techniques employed to correct for noisy measurements due to the presence of clouds in the SAGE II scenes are described, noting the slant path transmission methods applied to generate the water vapor profiles.

Pattern-based fault diagnosis using neural networks

An architecture for a real-time pattern-based diagnostic expert system capable of accommodating noisy, incomplete, and possibly erroneous input data is outlined. Results from prototype systems applied to jet and rocket engine fault diagnosis are presented. The ability of a neural network-based system to be trained via the presentation of behavioral patterns associated with fault conditions is demonstrated.

Coordinating sensing and local navigation

Based on Navigation Templates (or NaTs), this work presents a new paradigm for local navigation which addresses the noisy and uncertain nature of sensor data. Rather than creating a new navigation plan each time the robot's perception of the world changes, the technique incorporates perceptual changes directly into the existing navigation plan. In this way, the robot's navigation plan is quickly and continuously modified, resulting in actions that remain coordinated with its changing perception of the world.

An Experiment in Determining Software Reliability Model Applicability

There have been few reports on the behavior of software reliability models under controlled conditions. That is to say, most of the reported experience with the models is during the testing phase of actual projects, during which researchers have little or no control over the data with which they work. Give that failure data for actual projects can be noisy, distorted, and uncertain, reported procedures for determining model applicability may be incomplete.

The WFIRST CGI Integral Field Spectrograph: Requirements and Performance Predictions

The WFIRST coronagraphic instrument (CGI) will demonstrate exoplanet spectroscopy using an integral field spectrograph (IFS). The CGI IFS, being designed and built at Goddard Space Flight Center, has a spectral resolution of R50 and is designed to accommodate a 20% bandpass spanning 600- 970 nm. The IFS is principally targeting the abundance of Methane features, with the primary coronagraph band being centered around 770nm. Key to the performance estimates are the achievable signal-to-noise (SNR) ratios and the stability of the microspectra over the course of tens and hundreds of hours. As a technology demonstration for CGI, the ability to close a wavefront control loop around the IFS, maintain a stable dark hole, and provide time resolved data that simultaneously spans spatial and spectral dimensions are crucial demonstrations for future observatories. The IFS is optimized both for coronagraphs and science observations with a potential future starshade. We highlight how the long duration observations, and requirements for both starshades and coronagraphs drive the IFS requirements and the calibrations required both onorbit and on the ground. We also provide further detail on the optomechanical design, its stability based on thermal and structural predictions, anticipated performance, and operations concept of the CGI IFS. The impact of these performance metrics are projected into simulated data products, demonstrating cube extraction of noisy images and the subsequent planet spectrum that can be extracted from them. These demonstrations and performance predictions are key to future missions such as LUVOIR and HabEx, whose principal science case relies on efficient spectroscopy of exoplanets.

The case of the noisy derivatives - Evidence for a spacecraft-plasma interaction

Data from the retarding potential analyzers on Atmosphere Explorers C and D indicate the existence of 2-m irregularities in the ion flux to the satellite. These irregularities are seen only occasionally, and usually very near the magnetic dip equator. They occur both in sunlight and eclipse and span at least two decades of ion concentration. They tend to be present when the spacecraft is moving nearly parallel to the magnetic field vector and are not seen at all from the low latitude AE-E orbit. It is believed that the irregularities, whose amplitude is of the order of 1% of the background ion flux, are the result of a spacecraft interaction with the ionospheric plasma. A mechanism for producing this interaction that utilizes a fast beam of ambient ions reflected upstream from the satellite to produce a two-stream instability is examined in some detail.

Contribution of tonal components to the overall loudness, annoyance and noisiness of noise: Relation between single tones and noise spectral shape

A large scale laboratory investigation of loudness, annoyance, and noisiness produced by single-tone-noise complexes was undertaken to establish a broader data base for quanitification and prediction of perceived annoyance of sounds containing tonal components. Loudness, annoyance, and noisiness were distinguished as separate, distinct, attributes of sound. Three different spectral patterns of broadband noise with and without added tones were studied: broadband-flat, low-pass, and high-pass. Judgments were obtained by absolute magnitude estimation supplement by loudness matching. The data were examined and evaluated to determine the potential effects of (1) the overall sound pressure level (SPL) of the noise-tone complex, (2) tone SPL, (3) noise SPL, (4) tone-to-noise ratio, (5) the frequency of the added tone, (6) noise spectral shape, and (7) subjective attribute judged on absolute magnitude of annoyance. Results showed that, in contrast to noisiness, loudness and annoyance growth behavior depends on the relationship between the frequency of the added tone and the spectral shape of the noise. The close correspondence between the frequency of the added tone and the spectral shape of the noise. The close correspondence between loundness and annoyance suggests that, to better understand perceived annoyance of sound mixtures, it is necessary to relate the results to basic auditory mechanisms governing loudness and masking.

A method of using cluster analysis to study statistical dependence in multivariate data

A technique is presented that uses both cluster analysis and a Monte Carlo significance test of clusters to discover associations between variables in multidimensional data. The method is applied to an example of a noisy function in three-dimensional space, to a sample from a mixture of three bivariate normal distributions, and to the well-known Fisher's Iris data.

Starprobe - To confront the sun

Starprobe is an advanced-technology mission that is being planned for the purpose of making a very close approach to the sun; perhaps as near as four solar radii. The scientific experiments will accurately measure the solar quadrupole moment, conduct relativity experiments, measure the fields and particles environment, and image solar features at high resolution. An effective heat shield is required, and the communications system must be capable of returning data while the spacecraft is immersed in the noisy solar environment. The spacecraft's earth-inherited angular momentum will be removed for the drop into the sun by means of a close flyby of Jupiter.

Analysis of upper and lower bounds of the frame noise in linear detector arrays

This paper estimates the upper and lower bounds of the frame noise of a linear detector array that uses a one-dimensional scan pattern. Using chi-square distribution, it is analytically shown why it is necessary to use the average of the variances and not the average of the standard deviations to estimate these bounds. Also, a criteria for determining whether any excessively noisy lines exist among the detectors is derived from these bounds. Using a Gaussian standard random variable generator, these bounds are demonstrated to be accurate within the specified confidence interval. A silicon detector array is then used for actual dark current measurements. The criterion developed for determination of noisy detectors is checked on the experimentally obtained data.

Multiyear On-orbit Calibration and Performance of Terra MODIS Thermal Emissive Bands

Since launch in December 1999, Terra MODIS has been making continuous Earth observations for more than seven years. It has produced a broad range of land, ocean, and atmospheric science data products for improvements in studies of global climate and environmental change. Among its 36 spectral bands, there are 20 reflective solar bands (RSB) and 16 thermal emissive bands (TEB). MODIS thermal emissive bands cover the mid-wave infrared (MWIR) and long-wave infrared (LWIR) spectral regions with wavelengths from 3.7 to 14.4pm. They are calibrated on-orbit using an on-board blackbody (BB) with its temperature measured by a set of thermistors on a scan-by-scan basis. This paper will provide a brief overview of MODIS TEB calibration and characterization methodologies and illustrate on-board BB functions and TEB performance over more than seven years of on-orbit operation and calibration. Discussions will be focused on TEB detector short-term stability and noise characterization, and changes in long-term response (or system gain). Results show that Terra MODIS BB operation has been extremely stable since launch. When operated at its nominal controlled temperature of 290K, the BB temperature variation is typically less than +0.30mK on a scan-by-scan basis and there has been no time-dependent temperature drift. In addition to excellent short-term stability, most TEB detectors continue to meet or exceed their specified noise characterization requirements, thus enabling calibration accuracy and science data product quality to be maintained. Excluding the noisy detectors identified pre-launch and those that occurred post-launch, the changes in TEB responses have been less than 0.7% on an annual basis. The optical leak corrections applied to bands 32-36 have been effective and stable over the entire mission

Flow and Noise from Supersonic Plug Nozzles

Nozzles with external plugs are candidates for propulsion of future supersonic aircraft. A model-scale experimental study is conducted exploring the flow and noise characteristics of various plug nozzles. For a given outer nozzle, the plug geometry is varied from conic with various half-angles (lengths) to plugs designed by the method of characteristics (MoC) as well as truncated and porous plugs. So far, noise characteristics and schlieren flow visualization data have been acquired. Limited numerical simulations have also been done addressing thrust performance. The simulations show that the MoC plugs out-perform the conic cases, especially around high Mach number cruise conditions. The experimental data, however, show that the MoC plugs are noisy relative to the conic cases at low Mach number landing and takeoff (LTO) conditions. The increased noise (with MoC at LTO) is accompanied by unsteady turbulent structures and increased jet spreading, as seen in schlieren pictures. At LTO, the longest conic plug is found to be the least noisy. Furthermore, a porous surface on the long conic plug effectively suppresses broadband shock associated noise (BBSN) at higher Mach numbers. Thus, a dilemma remains. MoC design gives best thrust performance at cruise but it is noisy at LTO. A long conic plug, on the other hand, is quieter at LTO but may have unacceptable thrust at cruise.
