Developing closed life support systems for large space habitats

In anticipation of possible large-scale, long-duration space missions which may be conducted in the future, NASA has begun to investigate the research and technology development requirements to create life support systems for large space habitats. An analysis suggests the feasibility of a regeneration of food in missions which exceed four years duration. Regeneration of food in space may be justified for missions of shorter duration when large crews must be supported at remote sites such as lunar bases and space manufacturing facilities. It is thought that biological components consisting principally of traditional crop and livestock species will prove to be the most acceptable means of closing the food cycle. A description is presented of the preliminary results of a study of potential biological components for large space habitats. Attention is given to controlled ecosystems, Russian life support system research, controlled-environment agriculture, and the social aspects of the life-support system.

Modified-Edge Compact-Range Measurement System

Large curved edge termination reduces edge-scattered field in target area by one order of magnitude. Large, curved-edge treatment, involves radius of curvature equal to or greater than focal distance, provides improvement by creating reflected field that goes smoothly from parabolic surface to curved surface termination. Concept used on any reflector configuration requiring creation of field without diffraction from edge terminations.

Model verification of large structural systems

A methodology was formulated, and a general computer code implemented for processing sinusoidal vibration test data to simultaneously make adjustments to a prior mathematical model of a large structural system, and resolve measured response data to obtain a set of orthogonal modes representative of the test model. The derivation of estimator equations is shown along with example problems. A method for improving the prior analytic model is included.

Computer and display systems for large physiological models

This paper describes the computer and display systems which were developed for physiological models at NASA's Environmental Physiology Lab, Johnson Space Center. The systems involve hardware and software for remote communications, computation, and display. Also described is the development of a capability to proceed from a physiologist's hypothesis to meaningful presentations of model and laboratory data. Two large hardware and software computer configurations and their graphic display systems are discussed. One system is for dedicated use in the laboratory, and the other system is for remote use on a time-sharing basis. It is concluded that these techniques can add a new dimension to physiological data analysis tasks.

Stabilization of large-scale systems - A spinning flexible spacecraft

Stabilization of high-order constant systems by multilevel control is proposed in the framework of the decomposition-aggregation method for stability analysis of large-scale systems. An 11-order linear model of a spinning flexible spacecraft is stabilized by the method using both the passive and the active stabilization devices. The method can take advantage of the special structural features of the model to provide the best estimate of the stability region for an important parameter which couples the wobble and the spin motion of the spacecraft.

Overview of the large space systems technology program

A multicenter management approach which provides the opportunity to work across many disciplines and match the roles and expertise of various NASA facilities is described for the large space system technology (LSST) program which was established to define, develop, and verify structural concepts, analyses, and design procedures for a range of sizes and configurations to be deployed, erected, or fabricated in orbit during projected space missions utilizing shuttle in the 1985 to 2000 time period. Benefits from the program include reduced costs for transporting structures having low mass, high packageability, and multimission capabilities. Technologies identified by the LSST program will contribute to the solutions of problems in other sectors of the economy.

Decentralized control of large-scale systems: Fixed modes, sensitivity and parametric robustness

The problem of stabilization/pole placement under structural constraints of large scale linear systems is discussed. The existence of a solution to this problem is expressed in terms of fixed modes. The aim is to provide a bibliographic survey of the available results concerning the fixed modes (characterization, elimination, control structure selection to avoid them, control design in their absence) and to present the author's contribution to this problem which can be summarized by the use of the mode sensitivity concept to detect or to avoid them, the use of vibrational control to stabilize them, and the addition of parametric robustness considerations to design an optimal decentralized robust control.

Solutal Convection and Its Effects on Crystal Growth and Segregation in Binary and Pseudo-Binary System with Large Liquidus-Solidus Separation

This research program is composed of theoretical and experimental studies of solutal convection and its effects on crystal growth and segregation in binary and pseudo-binary systems with large liquidus-solidus separation. The theoretical program has resulted in the development of a transient simulation of the growth of concentrated alloys in microgravity and has been used to study the dynamics of GeSi, PbSnTe, HgCdTe growth. Finite element analysis has also been developed for studying the interactions of buoyancy-driven convection in the melt caused by temperature and concentration variations with melt-solid interface morphology and alloy segregation in the grown crystal. These calculations are being compared directly to experimental measurements of segregation and interface shape for GeSi growth and GaGe growth. The results for SiGe indicate that careful design of the thermal system can result in almost diffusion-controlled growth on Earth because of the stablizing influence of the concentration gradient ahead of the solidification front.

Large structures and tethers working group

The Large Structures and Tethers Working Group sought to clarify the meaning of large structures and tethers as they related to space systems. Large was assumed to mean that the characteristic length of the structure was greater than one of such relevant plasma characteristics as ion gyroradius or debey length. Typically, anything greater than or equal to the Shuttle dimensions was considered large. It was agreed that most large space systems that the tether could be better categorized as extended length, area, or volume structures. The key environmental interactions were then identified in terms of these three categories. In the following Working Group summary, these categories and the related interactions are defined in detail. The emphasis is on how increases in each of the three spatial dimensions uniquely determine the interactions with the near-Earth space environment. Interactions with the environments around the other planets and the solar wind were assumed to be similar or capable of being extrapolated from the near-Earth results. It should be remembered in the following that the effects on large systems do not just affect specific technologies but will quite likely impact whole missions. Finally, the possible effects of large systems on the plasma environment, although only briefly discussed, were felt to be of potentially great concern.

OVERSMART Reporting Tool for Flow Computations Over Large Grid Systems

Structured grid solvers such as NASA's OVERFLOW compressible Navier-Stokes flow solver can generate large data files that contain convergence histories for flow equation residuals, turbulence model equation residuals, component forces and moments, and component relative motion dynamics variables. Most of today's large-scale problems can extend to hundreds of grids, and over 100 million grid points. However, due to the lack of efficient tools, only a small fraction of information contained in these files is analyzed. OVERSMART (OVERFLOW Solution Monitoring And Reporting Tool) provides a comprehensive report of solution convergence of flow computations over large, complex grid systems. It produces a one-page executive summary of the behavior of flow equation residuals, turbulence model equation residuals, and component forces and moments. Under the automatic option, a matrix of commonly viewed plots such as residual histograms, composite residuals, sub-iteration bar graphs, and component forces and moments is automatically generated. Specific plots required by the user can also be prescribed via a command file or a graphical user interface. Output is directed to the user s computer screen and/or to an html file for archival purposes. The current implementation has been targeted for the OVERFLOW flow solver, which is used to obtain a flow solution on structured overset grids. The OVERSMART framework allows easy extension to other flow solvers.
