A grid-scale study of demand bidding by large industrial users

A demand bidding mechanism for engaging large industrial electricity users in the operation of the power grid is presented. Demand bidding is formulated as an optimization problem based on a modified version of the alternating current optimal power flow problem, and can be interpreted as a tâtonnement process between the grid operator and electricity users. Here, the work provides the first – to the authors’ knowledge – grid-scale case study of demand bidding, using a synthetic grid structure in the footprint of the grid of Texas. Results reveal that the demand bidding lowers overall power generation costs, but economic benefits plateau as the number of participants increases. Transmission line and transformer capacity constraints become the limiting factors, revealing that expanding and fortifying the transmission infrastructure is key to expanding demand-side participation. Demand bidding does not substantially alter the optimal operation of existing bidding entities when the number of bidders increases, thereby supporting existing bidders to stay in the system and encouraging new ones to join.

Finite-time correlations boost large voltage angle fluctuations in electric power grids

Abstract Decarbonization in the energy sector has been accompanied by an increased penetration of new renewable energy sources in electric power systems. Such sources differ from traditional productions in that, first, they induce larger, undispatchable fluctuations in power generation and second, they lack inertia. Recent measurements have indeed reported long, non-Gaussian tails in the distribution of local voltage frequency data. Large frequency deviations may induce grid instabilities, leading in worst-case scenarios to cascading failures and large-scale blackouts. In this article, we investigate how correlated noise disturbances, characterized by the cumulants of their distribution, propagate through meshed, high-voltage power grids. For a single source of fluctuations, we show that long noise correlation times boost non-Gaussian voltage angle fluctuations so that they propagate similarly to Gaussian fluctuations over the entire network. However, they vanish faster, over short distances if the noise fluctuates rapidly. We furthermore demonstrate that a Berry–Esseen theorem leads to the vanishing of non-Gaussianities as the number of uncorrelated noise sources increases. Our predictions are corroborated by numerical simulations on realistic models of power grids.

Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Simulation Algorithms for Evaluation of Large-Scale Extreme Fast Charging Systems (T&D Models)

Simulation of high-fidelity models of extreme fast charging (XFC) systems and large-area power grids with many XFCs can be time consuming in traditional simulators. Traditional simulators use a single method of discretization for all the components that results in imposing a large computational burden of inverting a large matrix as well as increased computations related to single method of discretization (that is typically a trapezoidal method). To overcome the problem of simulating large-area power grids with many XFCs, in this paper, advanced numerical simulation algorithms are applied for the first time together to reduce the dimension of matrix inversion. Here, the algorithms include numerical stiffness-based segregation, time constant-based segregation, clustering and aggregation on differential algebraic equations (DAEs), and multi-order integration approaches. These algorithms apply multiple discretization algorithms rather than a single discretization algorithm that further reduces the computational burden. The approaches mentioned here have resulted in speed-up of up to 18x in the simulation of a single distribution system with 15 XFCs and of up to 271x in the simulation of a transmission-distribution system with 300 XFCs in multiple distribution feeders with respect to conventional simulators (like power systems computer aided design [PSCAD]).

An Inrush Current Limiting Method for Grid-Connected Converters Considering Grid Voltage Disturbances

To support the electric power grid, some grid-connected converters are required to ride through abnormal grid conditions, including voltage disturbances. However, at the moment, when a grid voltage disturbance happens, a large inrush current could be induced due to the large difference between the grid and converter output pulsewidth modulation (PWM) voltages. This inrush current could be more severe in the faster switching SiC-based multilevel converter, which only needs a small filter inductance to meet its normal operation requirements, such as harmonics and peak ripple currents. In this article, a PWM mask method is used to limit the inrush current. With this method, the inrush current can be effectively limited to a preset value and can help the converter ride through grid voltage disturbances. Furthermore, the method is validated through experiments conducted on a single-phase SiC-based five-level converter considering low voltage, high voltage, and phase angle disturbances.

Application of CFD to sonic boom near and mid flow-field prediction

A 3-D parabolized Navier-Stokes (PNS) code was used to calculate the supersonic overpressures from three different geometries at near- and mid-flow fields. Wind tunnel data is used for code validation. Comparison of the computed results with different grid refinements is shown. It is observed that a large number of grid points is needed to resolve the tail shock/expansion fan interaction. Therefore, an adaptive grid approach is employed to calculate the flow field. The agreement between the numerical results and the wind tunnel data confirms that computational fluid dynamics can be applied to the problem of sonic boom prediction.
