Diffusion bonding method does not affect the mechanical properties of steel nor the strength of Teflon. It alleviates problems of adhesive outgassing, radiation damage, and delamination.

Superior mechanical properties were obtained in metal joints weld-brazed between faying surfaces. Weld-braze applications and advantages are listed.
Bi-composite joint serves as interface between two dissimilar materials by interleaving plies of one composite with plies of another. This interleaving forms transition area between composites. Voids are filled in with epoxy resin to form strong, smooth transition between two materials.
Silver sheet is wrapped around aluminum portion of joint. Mylar powder box is wrapped over silver sheet. Explosion welds silver to aluminum. Stainless-steel tube is placed over silver-aluminum interface. Mylar powder box, covered with Mylar tape, is wrapped around steel member. Explosion welds steel to silver-aluminum interface.
High quality resistance spot welds were produced by welding through epoxy adhesive on titanium alloys. Weldbond joints were consistently stronger than those of either mechanical fasteners, structural adhesive bonds, or mechanical fasteners with adhesive at the joint interface. Weldbond joints and/or spot weld joints showed superior strength at all temperature ranges as compared to other joints tested.
The development and characteristics of a system for automatic transmission of meteorological data to U.S.S.R. weather stations are discussed. An algorithm to be used with computer storage facilities to avoid duplication of data is examined. A specific method for providing automated data transmission and reception is explained.
Combined brazing and diffusion bonding process for aluminum and stainless steel saves time and simplifies processing. Test show that resulting bond can withstand internal pressures up to 1,000 psi.
Uniform wall thickness and uninterrupted heat transfer is achieved by using shaped metal insert as wall material for joint. Insert acts as support during brazing, after which excess material is ground away to bring joint to original tubing size.
Hafnium carbide was shown to be virtually inert when in contact with silicon carbide and Waspaloy for at least 200 hr at 1093 C (2000 F). Extensive interaction was noted with other superalloys such as HA-188. A continuous CVD HfC deposition process was developed for deposition of up to 8 microns on .14 mm (.0056 in.) SiC tungsten core filament at rates as high as .6 m/min. The rate can be increased by increasing the length of the reactor and the output of the power supply used in resistive heating of the filament substrate. The strength of HfC coated filament varies with thickness in a Griffith-like manner. This strength reduction was greater for HfC coatings than for tungsten coatings, presumably because of the greater ductility of tungsten.
NASA made a major stride in readying a second delivery vehicle for its Space Transportation System (STS) fleet with the perfect landing of Shuttle Orbiter Challenger at Edwards Air Force Base, California, April 9, 1983. Besides being the first flight test of Challenger's performance, the mission marked the orbiting of the first spacecraft in NASA's new Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The new family of orbiting space communications platforms is essential to serve future Shuttle missions. Although the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) second stage engine firing failed to place TDRS in its final 35,888 kilometer (22,300 mile) geosynchronous orbit, its release from the orbiter cargo bay went as planned. Launch officials were confident they can achieve its planned orbit in a matter of weeks.
