Field-induced intermediate ordered phase and anisotropic interlayer interactions in α-RuCl 3

In α-RuCl 3 , an external magnetic field applied within the honeycomb plane can induce a transition from a magnetically ordered state to a disordered state that is potentially related to the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. In zero field, single crystals with minimal stacking faults display a low-temperature state with in-plane zigzag antiferromagnetic order and a three-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. In this work, we present angle-dependent magnetization, ac susceptibility, and thermal transport data that demonstrate the presence of an additional intermediate-field ordered state at fields below the transition to the disordered phase. Neutron-diffraction results show that the magnetic structure in this phase is characterized by a six-layer periodicity in the direction perpendicular to the honeycomb planes. Theoretically, the intermediate ordered phase can be accounted for by including spin-anisotropic couplings between the layers in a three-dimensional spin model. Together, this demonstrates the importance of interlayer exchange interactions in α-RuCl 3 .

Trapping interlayer excitons in van der Waals heterostructures by potential arrays

Transition metal dichalcogenide heterostructures can host interlayer excitons (IXs), which consist of electrons and holes spatially separated in different layers. IXs possess permanent dipoles and have proven to offer a wealth of novel physics. Here we develop a discrete, random-walk model which includes annihilation and repulsion interactions among IXs. Using this model, we simulate the trapping of IXs in traps of different depths, densities, and shapes. Our results show that dipole-dipole interactions play an important role in regulating IX trapping. The effects of dipole interactions can be mitigated with small, deep traps which are realizable with atomic defects and moire potentials.

Quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnetism and anisotropic interlayer couplings in the magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

MnBi 2 Te 4 (MBT) is a promising van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator that combines a topologically nontrivial inverted Bi-Te band gap with ferromagnetic (FM) layers of Mn ions. Here, the inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals reported here describes rather complex magnetism in MBT. The magnetic anisotropy that controls the bulk and surface magnetic field response of MBT is found to have contributions from both single-ion and interlayer two-ion terms. A description of the quasi-two-dimensional intralayer FM spin waves requires long-range, competing FM and AFM interactions and anomalous damping. While this might suggest carrier-mediated magnetic coupling, abinitio calculations in insulating MBT also find long-range interactions, and classical spin dynamics simulations suggest that magnetic vacancies are at least partially responsible for observations of anomalous damping near the zone boundary.

Excitonic Interactions and Mechanism for Ultrafast Interlayer Photoexcited Response in van der Waals Heterostructures

Optical dynamics in van der Waals heterobilayers is of fundamental scientific and practical interest. Based on a time-dependent adiabatic GW approach, we discover a new many-electron (excitonic) channel for converting photoexcited intralayer to interlayer excitations and the associated ultrafast optical responses in heterobilayers, which is conceptually different from the conventional single-particle picture. We find strong electron-hole interactions drive the dynamics and enhance the pump-probe optical responses by an order of magnitude with a rise time of ~3⁢0⁢0 fs in MoSe 2 /WSe 2 heterobilayers, in agreement with experiment.

Local probe investigation of the spin dynamics in the kagome and interlayers of orthorhombic barlowite $\mathrm{Cu4(OD)_6FBr; ^{79}Br}$ and $\mathrm{^{63}Cu}$ NQR study

Here we report 79 Br and 63 Cu nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) in the paramagnetic state above T N =15 K of the antiferromagnetic orthorhombic phase of barlowite Cu 4 (OD) 6 FBr consisting of a layered kagome structure. The divergent behavior of the longitudinal 79 (1/T 1 ) and transverse 79 (1/T 2 ) relaxation rates observed at 79Br sites evidences that critical slowing down of Cu spin fluctuations sets in below ~20 K. This means that one or more Cu sites, most likely at the interlayer Cu(3,4,5) sites between the kagome planes, undergo the antiferromagnetic phase transition in a fairly conventional way. On the other hand, the 63 Cu NQR signal intensity is gradually wiped out below ~30 K, pointing toward gradual spin freezing of the kagome layers instead. These contrasting findings suggest significant roles played by magnetic frustration effects within the kagome layers.

Aluminum Oxide Passivating Tunneling Interlayers for Molybdenum Oxide Hole-Selective Contacts

Aluminum oxide thin films fabricated via atomic layer deposition are introduced as passivating tunneling interlayers between hole-selective molybdenum oxide contacts and silicon absorbers. Surface recombination velocity and specific contact resistivity are reported as a function of Al 2 O 3 thickness. The effects of substrate chemical pretreatment, the thermal history of the Al 2 O 3 layers prior to MoOx deposition, and the thermal history of the completed Al 2 O 3 /MoO x stacks were also investigated. When an SiO x /Al 2 O 3 passivating stack was incorporated and the completed test structure was annealed at 200 °C, the observed recombination velocities were reduced from ~10 000 cm/s for an unpassivated (initially hydrogen-terminated) Si/MoO x direct contact to ~500 cm/s, while maintaining a contact resistivity at or below 0.1 Ω·cm 2 . Finally, the data demonstrate the capability of ultrathin Al 2 O 3 to improve Si/MoO x contact properties and may be of interest in the design of future Si heterojunctions.

Technique for measuring magnetic tape interlayer adhesion

Technique measures interlayer adhesion in spacecraft data storage tape to avoid blocking. An unwind force is exerted on the spool, and the displacement before breakaway of the weighted outer layer is used to calculate the peel-off force necessary. This technique also can have terrestrial applications.

Deposition Of Cubic BN On Diamond Interlayers

Thin films of polycrystalline, pure, cubic boron nitride (c-BN) formed on various substrates, according to proposal, by chemical vapor deposition onto interlayers of polycrystalline diamond. Substrate materials include metals, semiconductors, and insulators. Typical substrates include metal-cutting tools: polycrystalline c-BN coats advantageous for cutting ferrous materials and for use in highly oxidizing environments-applications in which diamond coats tend to dissolve in iron or be oxidized, respectively.

Monolithic Parallel Tandem Organic Photovoltaic Cell with Transparent Carbon Nanotube Interlayer

We demonstrate an organic photovoltaic cell with a monolithic tandem structure in parallel connection. Transparent multiwalled carbon nanotube sheets are used as an interlayer anode electrode for this parallel tandem. The characteristics of front and back cells are measured independently. The short circuit current density of the parallel tandem cell is larger than the currents of each individual cell. The wavelength dependence of photocurrent for the parallel tandem cell shows the superposition spectrum of the two spectral sensitivities of the front and back cells. The monolithic three-electrode photovoltaic cell indeed operates as a parallel tandem with improved efficiency.

TEM Analysis of Diffusion-Bonded Silicon Carbide Ceramics Joined Using Metallic Interlayers

SiC fiber-bonded ceramics (SA-Tyrannohex: SA-THX) diffusion-bonded with TiCu metallic interlayers were investigated. Thin samples of the ceramics were prepared with a focused ion beam (FIB) and the interfacial microstructure of the prepared samples was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning TEM (STEM). In addition to conventional microstructure observation, for detailed analysis of reaction compounds in diffusion-bonded area, we performed STEM-EDS measurements and selected area electron diffraction (SAD) experiments. The TEM and STEM experiments revealed the diffusion-bonded area was composed of only one reaction layer, which was characterized by TiC precipitates in Cu-Si compound matrix. This reaction layer was in good contact with the SA-THX substrates, and it is concluded that the joint structure led to the excellent bonding strength.

Micro-tensile Properties of Fueled Irradiated AGR-2 TRISO-coated Particle Buffer, IPyC, and SiC Interlayer Regions

Tristructural isotropic (TRISO) coated nuclear fuel particles are proving to be a versatile fuel form for new reactor designs. Understanding the bounding strength and failure mode of each coating interface is important to both fuel quality evaluation and failure prediction. A mechanism of key significance is failure of the silicon carbide (SiC) layer to retain fission products due to incomplete tearing of the buffer layer. This is a two-step mechanism involving both mechanical failure in the buffer and inner pyrolytic carbon (IPyC) layers and degradation of the SiC layer through palladium silicides at the IPyC-SiC interface. However, the mechanical properties of TRISO particle coating layers have yet to be fully characterized due to the small dimension of TRISO fuel particles and high radioactivity. To investigate this mechanism, in situ micro-tensile properties of the buffer, IPyC, SiC, buffer-IPyC, and IPyC-SiC interlayer regions of fueled TRISO particles have been tested at both as-fabricated and irradiated conditions. Determination of the mechanical properties of these TRISO particle regions will lead to a better understanding of the SiC layer failure mechanism and enable progress towards TRISO fuel qualification.

Highly Anisotropic Drude-Weight-Reduction and Enhanced Linear-Dichroism in van der Waals Weyl Semimetal T d -MoTe 2 with Coherent Interlayer Electronic Transport

Weyl semimetal (WSM) states can be achieved by breaking spatial-inversion symmetry or time reversal symmetry. However, the anisotropy of the energy reduction contributing to the emergence of WSM states has seldom been investigated by experiments. A van der Waals metal MoTe 2 exhibits a type-II WSM phase below the monoclinic-to-orthorhombic-phase-transition temperature T c ~ 250 K. Here, in this work, a combined linearly polarized optical-spectroscopy and electrical-transport study of MoTe 2 is reported at different temperatures. The Drude components in the a-axis, b-axis, and c-axis optical conductivity spectra, together with the metallic out-of-plane and in-plane electrical resistivities, indicate the coherent inter-layer and in-plane charge transports. Moreover, the Drude weight in σ 1a (ω), rather than the Drude weights in σ 1b (ω) and σ 1c (ω), decreases dramatically below T c , which exhibits a highly anisotropic decrease in its Drude weight and thus suggests a strongly anisotropic reduction of the electronic kinetic energy in the WSM phase. Furthermore, below T c , due to the in-plane anisotropic spectral-weight transfer from Drude component to high-energy region, the in-plane inter-band-absorption anisotropy increases remarkably ≈770 meV, and has the largest value (≈0.68) of normalized linear dichroism among the reported type-II WSMs. The work sheds light on seeking new WSMs and developing novel photonic devices based on WSMs.
