Quantitative Determination of Total Cesium in Savannah River Site (SRS) Tank Waste by Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscropy

Utilization of the significant and unique wavelength dynamic range (165 to 1100 nm) available on the Leeman Prodigy Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-ES) allows for quantification of cesium using the emission line 894.347 nm without the potential of Barium interference in nuclear waste samples. Samples are added to a Sodium Peroxide Fusion and Lithium Carbonate buffer in 2% nitric acid solution to increase sensitivity of the easily ionizable (<6 eV) cesium for quantitation to 5 pbb. Through direct comparison of analytical data results, the method is proven to be complementary to the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis (LOQ 100 ppt) in support of the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Nuclear Waste Mission.

Applying Incremental, Inductive Model Checking to the Modal Mu Calculus

This work aims to demonstrate that an incremental inductive model checking algorithm built on top of Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solvers can be extended to support modal mu calculus (MMC) formulas. The resulting algorithm, called modal mu calculus model checking using myopic constraints (MC3), solves MMC model checking problems over Boolean labeled transition systems (LTSs). MMC subsumes simple invariance/reachability (as solved by the IC3 algorithm), linear temporal logic (LTL, as solved by the fair algorithm), computation tree logic (CTL, as solved by IICTL), and CTL* (which in turn subsumes LTL and CTL, but was not previously supported by any incremental inductive algorithm). The algorithm is implemented in a prototype solver, mc3.

Thermocatalytic Ethylene Production using Targeted RF Induction Heating

Ethylene, a key building block in the petrochemical industry is a top five chemical in annual production and the second highest energy consuming chemical per weight. Industrial-scale production of ethylene remains an energy consuming process and is conventionally practiced by steam cracking of ethane or naphtha feedstocks. Our project using Targeted RF Induction Heating aims to optimize the heating of the catalyst to improve energy efficiency (>50%). Induction heating also improves ethylene low-temperature yield, selectivity, and stability that will increase catalyst lifetime by >20% and result in a >15% decrease in operational costs.

Kinetic Inductance Phonon-Mediated Detectors for Dark Matter: R&D at NEXUS

Superconducting thin films have long been used as phonon sensors, particularly in the field of dark matter (DM) direct detection, due to the meV-scale Cooper-pair binding energy. A novel class of these detectors based on microwave kinetic inductance detectors, dubbed Kinetic Inductance Phonon-Mediated Detectors (KIPMDs), offers an attractive architecture for microcalorimeters to probe DM down to the fermionic thermal relic mass limit of a few keV. Such a device featuring an aluminum resonator patterned onto a silicon substrate was operated at the NEXUS low-background facility at Fermilab for characterization and evaluation of its efficacy for a dark matter search. With this device we have demonstrated a resolution on the energy absorbed by the superconductor of 2.5 eV, a factor of two better than current state-of-the-art. In this talk, I will present our measurement of the energy resolution and phonon collection efficiency performed by exposing the bare substrate to a pulsed source of 470 nm photons. I will also discuss the path forward to obtaining in these devices the sub-eV resolution required to test the “Freeze-in” class of DM models. Finally, I will review other complementary efforts in our group to develop a superconducting qubit-based low-threshold detector.

Applications of Alternate Actinide Calibration on Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) Analysis of H-Canyon Highly Enriched Uranium Legacy Material at the Savannah River Site (SRS)

The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) uses Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) to support numerous programs at the Savannah River Site (SRS). As part of an objective to prepare high assay low enriched uranium (HALEU), the SRS H-Canyon needed analysis of legacy uranyl nitrate that is stored at its Outside Facilities (HOF). With the application of a standard practice for alternate actinide calibration on ICP-MS, SRNL has successfully demonstrated its capability to characterize the uranium/actinide composition of the HOF tanks that are intended for consolidation prior to preparation of the HALEU. A comparison of the uranium analytical results between recently upgraded SRNL ICP-MS and Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP-OES) instrumentation shows the alternate actinide calibration is a valid complementary method when used in conjunction with other analytical techniques (Davies-Gray Potentiometric Titration). The methods, instrumentation, and ongoing developments on ICP-MS at SRNL will be discussed.

A novel bivalent chromatin associates with rapid induction of camalexin biosynthesis genes in response to a pathogen signal in Arabidopsis

Temporal dynamics of gene expression underpin responses to internal and environmental stimuli. In eukaryotes, regulation of gene induction includes changing chromatin states at target genes and recruiting the transcriptional machinery that includes transcription factors. As one of the most potent defense compounds in Arabidopsis thaliana , camalexin can be rapidly induced by bacterial and fungal infections. Though several transcription factors controlling camalexin biosynthesis genes have been characterized, how the rapid activation of genes in this pathway upon a pathogen signal is enabled remains unknown. By combining publicly available epigenomic data with in vivo chromatin modification mapping, we found that camalexin biosynthesis genes are marked with two epigenetic modifications with opposite effects on gene expression, trimethylation of lysine 27 of histone 3 (H3K27me3) (repression) and acetylation of lysine 18 of histone 3 (H3K18ac) (activation), to form a previously uncharacterized type of bivalent chromatin. Mutants with reduced H3K27me3 or H3K18ac suggested that both modifications were required to determine the timing of gene expression and metabolite accumulation at an early stage of the stress response. Our study indicates that the H3K27me3-H3K18ac bivalent chromatin, which we name as kairostat, plays an important role in controlling the timely induction of gene expression upon stress stimuli in plants.

Unipolar induction in the magnetosphere

A theory is described for the production of electric currents in the magnetosphere and for the transfer of energy from the solar wind to the magnetosphere. Assuming that the magnetosheath has ohmic-type conduction properties, it is shown that unipolar induction can energize several current flows, explaining the correlation of the east-west component of the interplanetary magnetic field with polar electric fields and polar magnetic variations. In the tail region, unipolar induction can account for effects correlated with the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field.

Myocardial correlates of helium-cold induction and maintenance of hypothermia.

Hypothermia was induced in the golden hamster Mesocricetus auratus, using the helium-cold method. The first group of hamsters was sacrificed immediately after induction to rectal temperature 7 C, a second group was sacrificed after being maintained at a body temperature of 7 C for 18-24 hr, and a third group consisted of unexposed controls. The hearts were excised and the ventricles analyzed for hypoxic damage, glycogen, and catecholamines. In the short-term hypothermic animals, resting tension was increased while peak isometric tension, generated tension after 10 min of anoxic exposure, glycogen, and catecholamines were all reduced. All of the functional parameters recovered in the long-term hypothermic group, while glycogen and catecholamines showed a trend toward recovery. It is concluded that myocardial hypoxia develops during induction into hypothermia when using the helium-cold method. This effect is reversible and hypoxic damage does not increase as the hypothermic exposure is prolonged.

Effect of design features on performance of a double-annular ram-induction combustor

An extensive test program was undertaken to determine the effect of many design features such as the size and number of air scoops, and the type of diffuser airflow distribution to use to optimize performance of a double-annular ram-induction combustor of 94 cm outer diameter. Six combustor configurations were tested. It was found that a snouted double annular combustor built with 256 ram-induction air scoops with a combustor open area giving a total pressure loss of 5.0 percent at a diffuser inlet Mach number of 0.25 gave the best overall performance of the configurations tested.

Evaluation of quasi-square wave inverter as a power source for induction motors

The relative merits of quasi-square wave inverter-motor technology versus a sine wave inverter-motor system were investigated. The empirical results of several tests on various sizes of wye-wound induction motors are presented with mathematical analysis to support the conclusions of the study. It was concluded that, within the limitations presented, the quasi-square wave inverter-motor system is superior to the more complex sine wave system for most induction motor applications in space.

Inductively coupled TI-MPD spacecraft electric propulsion

A nuclear electric propulsion concept using a thermionic reactor inductively coupled to a magnetoplasma-dynamic (MPD) accelerator is described and the results of preliminary analyses are presented. In this system, the thermionic generating unit operates continuously at a power level of approximately 0.4 MW, while the MPD thruster operates intermittently at higher voltages and power levels. Energy storage is provided by building up a large current in an inductor. Periodically, the charging current is interrupted and the energy stored in the magnetic field of the inductor is utilized for a short duration thrust pulse. A typical thrust pulse is characterized by a power level of 1 to 4 MWe, a duration of 1 msec, and a duty cycle of approximately 20%. Results of the preliminary analysis show that approximately 85 to 90% of the power available from the thermionic converter array can be delivered to the MPD thruster for a nominal 400 kWe system with an inductive unit suitable for a flight vehicle. Optimized values of the total specific mass of the system including the thermionic reactor, the inductor, and the MPD thruster are estimated in the range of 23 to 24 kg/kWe.

Model 'zero-age' lunar thermal profiles resulting from electrical induction

Thermal profiles for the moon are calculated under the assumption that a pre-main-sequence T-Tauri-like solar wind excites both transverse magnetic and transverse electric induction while the moon is accreting. A substantial initial temperature rise occurs, possibly of sufficient magnitude to cause subsequent early extensive melting throughout the moon in conjunction with nominal long-lived radioactives. In these models, accretion is an unimportant direct source of thermal energy but is important because even small temperature rises from accretion cause significant changes in bulk electrical conductivity. Induction depends upon the radius of the moon, which we take to be accumulating while it is being heated electrically. The 'zero-age' profiles calculated in this paper are proposed as initial conditions for long-term thermal evolution of the moon.
