Analysis of a laterally loaded ring with a hinged cross section.

A ring assembly constructed by lacing together three elements into a basic channel cross section is analyzed. The ring is supported at three equidistant points and loaded by a uniform distribution of radial and transverse loads. Bulkheads may be introduced at discrete cross sections to prevent distortion. The purpose of this analysis is to determine the behavior of the deflection as the number and location of the bulkheads and the degree of rigidity of the supports are varied. The method of analysis is an application of the Principle of Virtual Work within the framework of small displacement theory. Numerical results are presented for the geometrical parameters of a model. An important result is the observation that bulkheads have virtually no effect on the deflections of the web.

Dynamical models for a spacecraft idealized as a set of multi-hinged rigid bodies

A brief description is presented of a canonical set of equations which governs the behavior of an n-body spacecraft. General results are given for the case in which the spacecraft is modeled in terms of n rigid bodies connected by dissipative elastic joints. The final equations are free from constraint torques and involve only r variables (r is the number of degrees of freedom of the system). An advantage which accompanies the elimination of the constraint torques is a decrease in the computer run time (especially when n is large).

Hinged Shields for Machine Tools

Flaps guard against flying chips, but fold away for tool setup. Clear plastic shield in position to intercept flying chips from machine tool and retracted to give operator access to workpiece. Machine shops readily make such shields for own use.

Dynamic analysis of satellites with deployable hinged appendages

The nonlinear equations of motion determining the planar dynamical behavior of an orbiting satellite deploying both one and two rigid appendages have been formulated using Lagrange's equations. The analysis accounts for large angle rotations, Coriolis effects, and the gravitational gradient, and the resulting coupled governing equations are integrated numerically. The analysis is applied to the Space Shuttle based deployment of rigid truss-like members, and results show that spacecraft inertia parameters, appendage mass and length, deployment velocity, and initial conditions all influence the system response. It is found that the resulting librational movement is related to the size of the deployment payload, and that gravitational forces lead to vehicle stabilization.
