Higher-group symmetries and weak gravity conjecture mixing

In four-dimensional axion electrodynamics, a Chern-Simons coupling of the form $θF$ Λ $F$ leads to a higher-group global symmetry between background gauge fields. At the same time, such a Chern-Simons coupling leads to a mixing between the Weak Gravity Conjectures for the axion and the gauge field, so that the charged excitations of a Weak Gravity Conjecture-satisfying axion string will also satisfy the Weak Gravity Conjecture for the gauge field. In this paper, we argue that these higher-group symmetries and this phenomenon of Weak Gravity Conjecture mixing are related to one another. We show that this relationship extends to supergravities in 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 dimensions, so higher-dimensional supergravity is endowed with precisely the structure needed to ensure consistency with emergent higher-group symmetries and with the Weak Gravity Conjecture. We further argue that a similar mixing of Weak Gravity Conjectures can occur in two-term Chern-Simons theories or in theories with kinetic mixing, though the connection with higher-group symmetries here is more tenuous, and accordingly the constraints on effective field theory are not as sharp.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in samples of Ryugu formed in the interstellar medium

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contain ≲20% of the carbon in the interstellar medium. They are potentially produced in circumstellar environments (at temperatures ≳1000 kelvin), by (~10 kelvin) interstellar clouds, or by processing of carbon-rich dust grains. We report isotopic properties of PAHs extracted from samples of the asteroid Ryugu and the meteorite Murchison. The doubly- 13 C substituted compositions (Δ2× 13 C values) of the PAHs naphthalene, fluoranthene, and pyrene are 9 to 51‰ higher than values expected for a stochastic distribution of isotopes. The Δ2× 13 C values are higher than expected if the PAHs formed in a circumstellar environment, but consistent with formation in the interstellar medium. By contrast, the PAHs phenanthrene and anthracene in Ryugu samples have Δ2× 13 C values consistent with formation by higher-temperature reactions.

Diagonal isometric form for tensor network states in two dimensions

Isometric tensor network states (isoTNS) generalize the isometric form of the one-dimensional matrix product states to tensor networks in two and higher dimensions. Here, we introduce an alternative isometric form for isoTNS by incorporating auxiliary tensors to represent the orthogonality hypersurface. We implement the time evolving block decimation algorithm on this new isometric form and benchmark the method by computing ground states and the real time evolution of the transverse field Ising model in two dimensions on large square lattices of up to 1250 sites. Our results demonstrate that isoTNS can efficiently capture the entanglement structure of two-dimensional area law states. The short-time dynamics is also accurately reproduced even at the critical point. Our isoTNS formulation further allows for a natural extension to different lattice geometries, such as the honeycomb or kagome lattice.

High-Temperature Oxidation Behavior of Wrought and Additive Manufactured Ni-based Alloys in Direct-Fired Supercritical CO2 Power Cycle Environments

Materials selection is a key concern for corrosion resistance in elevated temperature and pressure direct-fired supercritical CO2 (sCO2) power cycles. Herein, the wrought product form of alloy H282, as well as several additional nickel-based commercial alloys (230, 263, 617, 625, 740H), were exposed to direct-fired supercritical CO2 conditions (95CO2 – 4H2O – 1O2) at 750 °C and 20 MPa for over 2,000 h. Additionally, additive manufactured (AM) 282 produced by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) were also included in the exposures. This paper focuses primarily on the differences observed in the degradation behavior of the wrought and additively manufactured materials. AM samples in the as-printed state were found to form less protective oxide scales resulting in higher oxidation rates compared to wrought samples. However, applying a 600 grit surface finish to the AM samples modified the oxidation behavior to closely resemble that of the wrought material. The AM samples formed Mo-rich carbides in the alloy beneath the oxide following sCO2 exposure, implying potentially higher levels of carbon uptake relative to the wrought material. Conversely, the AM samples seemed to be less affected by water-assisted oxide volatilization compared to the wrought material. The results are discussed in terms of the potential compatibility issues that may arise when using Ni-based alloys in the hot portions of direct-fired sCO2 power cycles, particularly in the case of thin-walled components.

Polyphosphate kinase deletion increases laboratory productivity in cyanobacteria

Identification and manipulation of cellular energy regulation mechanisms may be a strategy to increase productivity in photosynthetic organisms. This work tests the hypothesis that polyphosphate synthesis and degradation play a role in energy management by storing or dissipating energy in the form of ATP. A polyphosphate kinase ( ppk ) knock-out strain unable to synthesize polyphosphate was generated in the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. This mutant strain demonstrated higher ATP levels and faster growth than the wildtype strain in high-carbon conditions and had a growth defect under multiple stress conditions. In a strain that combined ppk deletion with heterologous expression of ethylene-forming enzyme, higher ethylene productivity was observed than in the wildtype background. These results support the role of polyphosphate synthesis and degradation as an energy regulation mechanism and suggest that such mechanisms may be effective targets in biocontainment design.

The R -process Alliance: Enrichment of r -process Elements in a Simulated Milky Way–like Galaxy

We study the formation of stars with varying amounts of heavy elements synthesized by the rapid neutron-capture process (r-process) based on our detailed cosmological zoom-in simulation of a Milky Way–like galaxy with an N-body/smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, asura. Most stars with no overabundance in r-process elements, as well as the strongly r-process-enhanced (RPE) r-II stars ([Eu/Fe] > +0.7), are formed in dwarf galaxies accreted by the Milky Way within the 6 Gyr after the Big Bang. In contrast, over half of the moderately enhanced r-I stars (+0.3 < [Eu/Fe] ≤ +0.7) are formed in the main in situ disk after 6 Gyr. Our results suggest that the fraction of r-I and r-II stars formed in disrupted dwarf galaxies is larger the higher their [Eu/Fe] is. Accordingly, the most strongly enhanced r-III stars ([Eu/Fe] > +2.0) are formed in accreted components. These results suggest that non-r-process-enhanced stars and r-II stars are mainly formed in low-mass dwarf galaxies that hosted either none or a single neutron star merger, while the r-I stars tend to form in the well-mixed in situ disk. We compare our findings with high-resolution spectroscopic observations of RPE metal-poor stars in the halo and dwarf galaxies, including those collected by the R-Process Alliance. We conclude that observed [Eu/Fe] and [Eu/Mg] ratios can be employed in chemical tagging of the Milky Way’s accretion history.

Photometric variability in star-forming galaxies as evidence for low-mass AGN and a precursor to quenching

We measure the optical variability in ~16 500 low-redshift (z ~ 0.1) galaxies to map the relations between active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity and galaxy stellar mass, specific star formation rate, half-light radius, and bulge-to-total ratio. To do this, we use a reduced χ 2 variability measure on >10 epoch light curves from the Zwicky Transient Facility and combine with spectroscopic data and derive galaxy parameters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that below the stellar mass of 10 11 M ⊙ , galaxies classed as star-forming via the Baldwin–Phillips–Terlevich diagram have higher mean variabilities than AGN or composite galaxies. Revealingly, the highest mean variabilities occur in star-forming galaxies in a narrow range of specific star formation rate: -11 < log(sSFR/yr -1 ) < -10. In very actively star-forming galaxies [log(sSFR/yr -1 ) > -10], the reduced variability implies a lack of instantaneous correlation with star formation rate. Our results may indicate that a high level of variability, and thus black hole growth, acts as a precursor for reduced star formation, bulge growth, and revealed AGN-like emission lines. These results add to the mounting evidence that optical variability can act as a viable tracer for low-mass AGNs and that such AGNs can strongly affect their host galaxy.

Iodine Capture by Ag-Loaded Solid Sorbents Followed by Ag Recycling and Iodine Immobilization: An End-to-End Process

Here, this article demonstrates the complete process of I 2(g) capture using Ag-exchanged faujasite (AgX) and Ag-exchanged mordenite (AgZ) zeolite sorbents, the recovery of Ag for recyclability of iodine capture, and the immobilization of iodide (from the elution process) into an iodosodalite waste form, which is chemically and environmentally stable. The gaseous iodine, I 2(g) , was captured in the AgX via chemisorption by Ag and converted to AgI within the aluminosilicate zeolite frameworks. The elution reaction in Na 2 S resulted in the precipitation of Ag 2 S and dissolution of I – and Na + into the aqueous solution, where powdered sorbent showed higher conversion efficiency than the granular form, which is attributed to Na 2 S-solution diffusion limitations in the granules. The Ag 2 S-containing aluminosilicate precipitates were filtered out of the solution, and the filtrate (aqueous solution) was used to synthesize iodosodalite to immobilize iodide. The iodine capture using the recovered Ag 2 S-containing sorbents shows equivalent iodine loadings to the AgX starting material of Q e = 0.355 g/g for powdered material and 0.255 g/g for granular material, demonstrating the potential recycling of Ag for iodine capture as Ag 2 S-based sorbents.

Electrochemical Hydrogenation of CO on Cu(100): Insights from Accurate Multiconfigurational Wavefunction Methods

Copper (Cu) remains the most efficacious electrocatalyst for electrochemical CO 2 reduction (CO 2 R). Its activity and selectivity are highly facet-dependent. We recently examined the commonly proposed rate-limiting CO hydrogenation step on Cu(111) via embedded correlated wavefunction (ECW) theory and demonstrated that only this higher-level theory yields predictions consistent with potential-dependent experimental kinetics. Here, to understand the differing activities of Cu(111) and Cu(100) in catalyzing CO 2 R, we explore CO hydrogenation on Cu(100) using ECW theory. We predict that the preferred pathway involves the reduction of adsorbed CO (*CO) to *COH via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) at working potentials, although *CHO also may form with a kinetically accessible but higher barrier. In contrast, our earlier work on Cu(111) concluded that *COH and *CHO formation via PCET are equally feasible. Furthermore, this work illustrates one possible origin of the facet dependence of CO 2 R mechanisms and products on Cu electrodes and sheds light on how the selectivity of CO 2 R electrocatalysts can be controlled by the surface morphology.

PARTICLE RESOLVED DNS STUDY OF TURBULENCE EFFECTS ON HYPORHEIC MIXING IN RANDOMLY PACKED SEDIMENT BEDS

Pore-resolved direct numerical simulations (DNS) are used to investigate the interactions between stream-water flow turbulence and groundwater flow through a porous sediment bed in the hyporheic zone. Two permeability Reynolds numbers (2.56 and 5.17), representative of aquatic systems and representing ratio of permeability to viscous length scales, were simulated to understand its influence on the momentum exchange at the sediment-water interface (SWI). A doubleaveraging methodology is used to compute the Reynolds stresses, form-induced stresses, and pressure fluctuations. It is observed that both shear layer and turbulent shear stress penetration increases with ReK. Reynolds and form-induced bed-normal stresses increase with ReK. The peak values of the form-induced stresses for the lower (2.56) and higher (5.17) ReK happen within the top layer of the sediment bed. The sum of turbulent and form-induced pressure fluctuations, analyzed at their respective zero-displacement planes, are statistically similar and can be well approximated by a t location-scale distribution fit providing with a model that could potentially be used to impose boundary conditions at the SWI in reach scale simulations.

Factors Affecting the Electron Conductivity in Single Crystal Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 and Li 7 P 3 S 11

One of the serious challenges in all solid-state Li ion batteries is neutral Li intrusion into the solid-state electrolyte that can ultimately cause catastrophic failure. One possibility for this is due to n-type electron conductivity that induces the reaction Li + + e – → Li 0 at sites where the potential is less than the Li + /Li potential. This paper reports hybrid density functional theory calculations of the electronic conductivity in two prototype single crystalline solid-state electrolytes, cubic Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (c-LLZO) and Li 7 P 3 S 11 (LPS). The formation energies of important point defects that can affect electron conductivity are determined, and we find that the mechanism of n-type electron conductivity for both solid-state electrolytes is via “small” electron polaron hopping, where the quotes signify that substantial Li ion rearrangement is associated with the polaron formation and its migration. In both electrolytes, the formation energies for the small polarons at the Fermi energy are too high to generate measurable electron conductivity at room temperature. For c-LLZO, the concentration of electron polarons necessary to ensure charge neutrality from positively charged oxygen vacancies formed in synthesis can be significantly higher. Hence, the electron conductivity could be significant when measured with ion-blocking metal electrodes, and we discuss how the synthesis conditions could affect this magnitude. However, in the solid-state battery, these polarons are replaced by negatively charged Li vacancies so that the electron conductivity should remain minimal. For LPS single crystals, the inherent minimal electron conductivity is independent of synthesis conditions. Here we also show that the cost of forming Li 0 in bulk c-LLZO is enormous due to strain effects so that it could only potentially form at voids, grain boundaries, or around vacancy defects which relax the lattice strain.

Natural carbonation of portland cement with synthetic zeolite Y as a supplementary cementitious material

Risks associated with carbonation are a key limitation to greater replacement levels of ordinary portland cement (OPC) by supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The addition of pozzolanic SCMs in OPC alters the hydrate assemblage by forming phases like calcium-(alumina)-silicate-hydrate (C-(A)-S-H). The objective of the present study was to elucidate how such changes in hydrate assemblage influence the chemical mechanisms of carbonation in a realistic OPC system. Here, in this paper, we show that synthetic zeolite Y (faujasite) is a highly reactive pozzolan in OPC that reduces the calcium content of hydration products via prompt consumption of calcium hydroxide from the evolving phase assemblage prior to CO 2 exposure. Suppression of portlandite at moderate to high zeolite Y content led to a more damaging mechanism of carbonation by disrupting the formation of a passivating carbonate layer. Without this layer, carbonation depth and CO 2 uptake are increased. Binders containing 12–18% zeolite Y by volume consumed all the calcium hydroxide from OPC during hydration and reduced the Ca/(Si+Al) ratio of the amorphous products to near 0.67. In these cases, higher carbonation depths were observed after exposure to ambient air with decalcification of C-(A)-S-H as the main source of CO 2 buffering. Binders with either 0% or 4% zeolite Y contained calcium hydroxide in the hydrated microstructure, had higher Ca/(Si+Al) ratios, and formed a calcite-rich passivation layer that halted deep carbonation. Although the carbonated layer in the samples with 12% and 18% zeolite Y contained 70% and 76% less calcite than the OPC respectively, their higher carbonation depths resulted in total CO 2 uptakes that were 12x greater than the OPC sample. Passivation layer formation in samples with calcium hydroxide explains this finding and was further supported by thermodynamic modeling. High Si/Al zeolite additives to OPC should be balanced with the calcium content for optimal carbonation resistance.

Reassessing Hybrid Vigor or Hybrid Dysfunction Using Physiological Trade-Offs in an Endangered Salamander System

Fitness of interspecific hybrids can be higher or lower than that of their parental genotypes, with major ramifications for evolution and conservation. A recent study found that hybrid tiger salamanders had higher metabolic rates than their parental forms. Specifically, the ratio of resting metabolic rate to water loss, which was used as a measure of performance, was greater in hybrids. Recent genetic research showed that over half of the experimental subjects in that study were genetically pure California tiger salamanders (Ambystoma californiense) misclassified as hybrids. We reanalyzed the data using the corrected identification of hybrids and parentals. As expected, updating the classification revealed even stronger evidence for differences between hybrids and parentals. Hybrids had higher resting metabolic rates and greater water loss than parentals. The ratio of resting metabolic rate to water loss was also higher in hybrids. However, we suggest that this ratio might not be a positive measure of salamander performance. Higher metabolic rate means higher energy expenditure, and higher water loss suggests increased risk of desiccation. Both are major challenges for terrestrial amphibians, especially salamanders, which are hypothesized to be low-energy, low-water-loss specialists. Under this hypothesis, the ratio of energy expenditure to water loss is a ratio of two costs rather than a ratio of benefit to cost. While our analyses corroborate and strengthen the previous statistical results, we suggest that high resting metabolic rate is better interpreted as hybrid dysfunction, not vigor. Here, both hypotheses are speculative, and specific research on the fitness effects of these physiological differences is needed to resolve this important ecological question.

Adapting Optimal Velocity Tracking Control to Account for WEC Constraints and Power-Take-Off Efficiencies: Preprint

Wave energy converters (WECs) come in many different forms, from point absorbers, oscillating water columns, to bulge wave devices. This paper focuses on the control of point absorber WECs, which typically have a narrow-banded frequency response and, therefore, control is well placed to improve the energy capture of such WECs. The acausal nature of the control problem means that theoretically optimal control is almost impossible to achieve inpractice; however optimal velocity tracking (OVT) offers a simple and robust approximation to optimal control that can achieve better power capture than passive linear damping methods, albeit with necessarily higher force demands. OVT is a form of impedance matching and the magnitude of the power-take off (PTO) force demand is often not linearly proportional to the WEC velocity, which can lead to PTO force and speed combinations far from the optimalPTO efficiency. The highly non-linear PTO force and speed to efficiency mapping can, without remedial measures, severely diminish the effectiveness of OVT techniques. In this paper, limits to the movement and force of the PTO are demonstrated, allowing OVT to be more easily applied in practice. The effect of PTO efficiency is explored, and a potential solution to the problem of adapting control to account for efficiency is presented. Both aspects of the work presented highlight the requirement for co-design of the WEC, PTO, and controller.

SN 2021adxl: A luminous nearby interacting supernova in an extremely low-metallicity environment

SN 2021adxl is a slowly evolving, luminous, Type IIn supernova with asymmetric emission line profiles, similar to the well-studied SN 2010jl. We present extensive optical, near-ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry and spectroscopy covering ∼1.5 years post discovery. SN 2021adxl occurred in an unusual environment, atop a vigorously star-forming region that is offset from its host galaxy core. The appearance of Ly α and O II , as well as the compact core, would classify the host of SN 2021adxl as a “Blueberry” galaxy, analogous to higher redshift, low-metallicity, star-forming dwarf “Green Pea” galaxies. Using several abundance indicators, we find a metallicity of the explosion environment of only ∼0.1 Z ⊙ , the lowest reported metallicity for a Type IIn SN environment. SN 2021adxl reaches a peak magnitude of M r ≈ −20.2 mag and since discovery, SN 2021adxl has faded by only ∼4 magnitudes in the r band with a cumulative radiated energy of ∼1.5 × 10 50 erg over 18 months. SN 2021adxl shows strong signs of interaction with a complex circumstellar medium, seen by the detection of X-rays, revealed by the detection of coronal emission lines, and through multi-component hydrogen and helium profiles. In order to further understand this interaction, we model the H α profile using a Monte Carlo electron scattering code. The blueshifted high-velocity component is consistent with emission from a radially thin spherical shell resulting in the broad emission components due to electron scattering. Using the velocity evolution of this emitting shell, we find that the SN ejecta collide with circumstellar material of at least ∼5 M ⊙ assuming a steady-state mass-loss rate of ∼4 − 6 × 10 −3 M ⊙ yr −1 for the first ∼200 days of evolution. SN 2021adxl was last observed to be slowly declining at ∼0.01 mag d −1 , and if this trend continues, SN 2021adxl will remain observable after its current solar conjunction. Continuing the observations of SN 2021adxl may reveal signatures of dust formation or an infrared excess, similar to that seen for SN 2010jl.

Clumped 13 CH 2 D and 12 CHD 2 compositions of methyl groups from wood and synthetic monomers: Methods, experimental and theoretical calibrations, and initial results

Methyl groups are found in numerous biogenic and synthetic materials including geologically preserved materials such as wood. The carbon and hydrogen isotope compositions of methyl groups are used as tracers in biogeochemical cycles, as paleothermometers, and to determine the hydrogen isotopic composition of ancient rain. Here we present analyses of resolved 13 C–D ( 13 CH 2 D) and D–D ( 12 CHD 2 ) clumped isotope compositions of methyl groups as new variables for the study of methyl groups in the present and past. We first present chemical methods to extract, purify, and derivatize methyl groups from methoxyl (R–O–CH 3 ) groups as CH 3 F and CH 3 Cl, and high-resolution mass spectrometric techniques to determine the clumped isotope compositions of these species. We achieve precisions for 13 C–D clumping of ±0.25‰ and D–D clumping of ±2.5‰. We anchor our clumped isotopic measurements to a thermodynamic reference frame by first calculating the theoretical temperature dependences of 13 C–D and D–D clumping in CH 3 Cl, then placing our measurements onto this reference frame through experimental internal isotopic equilibration of CH 3 Cl at 200 °C. Finally, we provide and analyze an initial dataset of clumped 13 C–D and D–D compositions of methyl groups from various commercial/synthetic monomers and environmental woods. We observe ranges in clumped isotope compositions of ~11‰ in 13 C–D and ~48‰ in D–D, and systematic differences within these ranges between methyl groups from commercial monomers and wood. Specifically, commercial clumped 13 C–D compositions are between 0 and 3‰, which correspond to apparent equilibrium temperatures between 170 °C and the infinite temperature limit. In contrast, the clumped 13 C–D compositions of wood methoxyl groups are distinctively high (9.50–11.25‰) and 3–6‰ higher than would be expected if formed in internal isotopic equilibrium at Earth-surface temperatures. Commercial/synthetic methyl and wood methoxyl clumped D–D compositions are also distinct: -5 to +13‰ in commercial monomers vs. -35 to -8‰ in wood—such negative values cannot result from formation in isotopic equilibrium and require kinetic processes to have occurred. Overall, these results indicate that wood methoxyl groups are formed out of isotopic equilibrium and that clumped isotope compositions of methyl groups may be useful tracers of methyl group sources and sinks in the environment. For instance, isotopic clumping in methyl groups may be useful for understanding controls on isotopic clumping in methane produced by methylotrophic methanogens.

Effect of grain size on iron-boride nanoglasses

Metallic nanoglasses are made of amorphous grains that are separated by lower-density amorphous boundaries, which have been proposed to enhance plasticity through the deflection of cracks and shear bands at interfaces. It has been difficult to experimentally control grain size and interfacial structure to understand their roles in plastic deformation. Here, we fabricate bulk nanoglasses via compaction and sintering of colloidally synthesized amorphous iron-boride nanoparticles. These nanoglasses have amorphous grains with diameters from 116nm to 576nm and were tested using nanoindentation and micropillar compressions. The nanoglass with a grain size of 576 nm shows the highest elastic modulus and hardness of 101 GPa and 7.4GPa, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy reveals that nanocrystals form within the nanoglasses during compaction. Higher nanocrystal density correlates with higher nanoparticle crystallization enthalpy, an increase in plasticity, and a decrease in yield strength. Plastic strain of 5.0%, yield strength of 3.8GPa, and ultimate compressive strength of 2.7–3.8GPa were achieved. Here we show that the compaction of colloidal metallic glass nanoparticles results in robust bulk samples, with mechanical properties similar to that of other iron-based bulk metallic glasses.
