Uranium Prototype Glovebox and Furnace Design and Build (SPC-2954)

This specification contains the requirements for design, analysis, fabrication, testing and delivery of the Uranium Prototype Glovebox (UPG) and Furnace, and the associated equipment as described herein. The UPG will be primarily used for the containment of uranium and the prototyping of equipment to be used in higher hazard category gloveboxes. This will allow complex pieces of equipment to be tested in a less hazardous environment prior to fabrication and installation in other gloveboxes.

Development of Reduced Glass Furnace Model to Optimize Process Operation

This was a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC as manager and operator of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and PPG Industries to develop a reduced-order glass furnace model that enables plant operators to make informed, realtime process adjustments. This CRADA project is sponsored under the High-Performance Computing for Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg) Program of the Department of Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) within the Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Office. This program ran from June 2016 to July 2017 with no extensions.

New Physics in the Hot Electron Furnace (Final Report)

The primary purpose of this award was experiments and simulations related to the idea of a ‘Hot Electron Furnace’ where nonlocal heat transport would allow unique new experimental opportunities at x-ray free electron lasers. The period of this award included beamtime at the MEC endstation of the LCLS, and the execution of those experiments was a primary goal. Unfortunately, the beamtime had limited success due to (1) inability of the LCLS to deliver the expected two-color operations mode, and (2) failure of the MEC endstation’s own software to save the cavity timing data that would have allowed inference of time delays for the few hours when two-color mode briefly operated. The beamtime was then switched to operate in single-color (one pulse) mode, and studies were performed of x-ray heating and probe, simultaneously. Two interesting manuscripts are finally near submission, having been delayed by student graduations, need for collaborator simulations of x-ray heating processes, and then COVID. I am hopeful that they will soon be submitted (especially the paper on x-ray heating of MgO) because one of the principal students involved has returned from industry to take a postdoc position at SLAC. Below, we first list all publications and other work products (including the two that are nearing submission) and then summarize several outcomes from this effort. During the term of this award three UW physics graduate students were at least partially supported, and all three received their Ph.D.’s with significant components of their supported work in the dissertation.

SIMS Investigation of Furnace-Baked Nb

Results recently published by Ito et al. showed that "furnace baking" Nb SRF cavities after electropolishing yields high quality factors and anti-Q-slopes resembling that of N doped cavities. Small Nb samples were prepared following the recipe outlined by Ito. These samples were measured by SIMS to examine impurity contributions to the RF penetration layer. These diffusion profiles are modeled, and their consequences on RF properties discussed.

Analysis of Silver Release from Furnace-Tested TRISO Particles

High temperature testing of intact TRISO particles previously irradiated in the AGR-5/6/7 experiment was performed in the Furnace for Irradiated TRISO Testing (FITT) to directly confirm diffusive release of silver and europium from intact TRISO particles. Testing was conducted from 1,100–1,600°C for exposure times up to 100 h to directly confirm silver through layer release below safety testing temperatures. The FITT analysis showed highest levels of silver release at 1,300–1,400°C which confirms athermal release behaviors previous observed in step-wise and transient safety tests. Additionally, release was non-uniform with some particles releasing a majority of their inventory while others did not appear to release silver under identical testing conditions, which was consistent with historic observations. An assessment of the effective silver diffusion coefficient in the SiC layer was conducted and indicated maximum values in the 1,300–1,400°C range. The magnitude of the calculated diffusion coefficients also exceeded currently accepted diffusion coefficients. The release behavior of europium from intact particles was also analyzed in FITT for at 1,450–1,550°C for 500 h to 750 h. Direct confirmation of europium release below safety testing temperatures was confirmed absent contributions from matrix release. The analysis indicated europium release follows a general Arrhenius behavior and suggests general uniform release and indicates irradiation conditions influence observed release response. Calculated diffusion kinetics agree well with historic experiments.

In Situ High-Temperature Ultrafast Electron Diffraction through Integrated Furnace and MEMS Platforms

Temperature fundamentally governs phase stability, defect evolution, and transport behavior in materials. Despite its central role, direct measurements of structural evolution at elevated temperatures on ultrafast timescales have remained limited. Here, we report the design, integration, and validation of 2 complementary in situ heating platforms that substantially extend the thermal operating range of ultrafast electron diffraction (UED). A compact furnace-type heating stage enables stable diffraction measurements from room temperature to 800 K with ±0.1 K stability under ultrahigh vacuum, achieved through multi-sensor feedback control, dual air-cooling channels, and a thermally isolated motion stage. In parallel, a microelectromechanical system (MEMS)-based heating platform provides rapid thermal response and access to extreme temperatures ≥1,373 K with ±0.1 K stability over hundreds-micrometer regions while supporting simultaneous electrical biasing for electrothermal coupling studies. Absolute temperature calibration is established using diffraction-based thermometry via aluminum lattice expansion and independently validated through in situ melting of bismuth thin films. UED measurements further reveal pronounced temperature-dependent nonequilibrium lattice dynamics in bismuth, including modifications to electron–phonon coupling and Debye–Waller behavior, as well as enhanced ultrafast diffuse scattering in aluminum at elevated temperatures. Together, these developments establish a practical framework for quantitative, time-resolved studies of temperature-driven kinetics and nonequilibrium structural dynamics under extreme thermal environments.

Refractory metal shielding /insulation/ increases operating range of induction furnace

Thermal radiation shield contains escaping heat from an induction furnace. The shield consists of a sheet of refractory metal foil and a loosely packed mat of refractory metal fibers in a concentric pattern. This shielding technique can be used for high temperature ovens, high temperature fluid lines, and chemical reaction vessels.
