Blade frequency program for nonuniform helicopter rotors, with automated frequency search

A computer program for determining the natural frequencies and normal modes of a lumped parameter model of a rotating, twisted beam, with nonuniform mass and elastic properties was developed. The program is used to solve the conditions existing in a helicopter rotor where the outboard end of the rotor has zero forces and moments. Three frequency search methods have been implemented. Including an automatic search technique, which allows the program to find up to the fifteen lowest natural frequencies without the necessity for input estimates of these frequencies.

A Technique for Measuring Rotocraft Dynamic Stability in the 40 by 80 Foot Wind Tunnel

An on-line technique is described for the measurement of tilt rotor aircraft dynamic stability in the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel. The technique is based on advanced system identification methodology and uses the instrumental variables approach. It is particulary applicable to real time estimation problems with limited amounts of noise-contaminated data. Several simulations are used to evaluate the algorithm. Estimated natural frequencies and damping ratios are compared with simulation values. The algorithm is also applied to wind tunnel data in an off-line mode. The results are used to develop preliminary guidelines for effective use of the algorithm.

Study of wrap-rib antenna design

The results of a parametric design study conducted to develop the significant characteristics and technology limitations of space deployable antenna systems with aperture sizes ranging from 50 up to 300 m and F/D ratios between 0.5 and 3.0 are presented. Wrap/rib type reflectors of both the prime and offset fed geometry and associated feed support structures were considered. The significant constraints investigated as limitations on achievable aperture were inherent manufacturability, orbit dynamic and thermal stability, antenna weight, and antenna stowed volume. A data base, resulting in the defined maximum achievable aperture size as a function of diameter, frequency and estimated cost, was formed.

Tropical cyclone intensities from satellite microwave data

Radial profiles of mean 1000 mb to 250 mb temperature from the Nimbus 6 scanning microwave spectrometer (SCAMS) were constructed around eight intensifying tropical storms in the western Pacific. Seven storms showed distinct inward temperature gradients required for intensification; the eighth displayed no inward gradient and was decaying 24 hours later. The possibility that satellite data might be used to forecast tropical cyclone turning motion was investigated using estimates obtained from Nimbus 6 SCAMS data tapes of the mean 1000 mb to 250 mb temperature field around eleven tropical storms in 1975. Analysis of these data show that for turning storms, in all but one case, the turn was signaled 24 hours in advance by a significant temperature gradient perpendicular to the storm's path, at a distance of 9 deg to 13 deg in front of the storm. A thresholding technique was applied to the North Central U.S. during the summer to estimate precipitation frequency. except

Effects of noise frequency on performance and annoyance for women and men

Effects of noise frequencies on both performance on a complex psychomotor task and annoyance were investigated for men (n = 30) and women (n = 30). Each subject performed a complex psychomotor task for 50 min in the presence of low-frequency noise, high-frequency noise, or ambient noise. Women and men learned the task at different rates. Little effect of noise was shown. Annoyance ratings were subsequently obtained from each subject for noises of various frequencies by the method of magnitude estimation. High-frequency noises were more annoying than low-frequency noises regardless of sex and immediate prior exposure to noise. Sex differences in annoyance did not occur. No direct relationship between learning to perform a complex task while exposed to noise and annoyance by that noise was demonstrated.

Mean excitation energies for stopping powers in various materials using local plasma oscillator strengths

The basic model of Lindhard and Scharff, known as the local plasma model, is used to study the effects on stopping power of the chemical and physical state of the medium. Unlike previous work with the local plasma model, in which individual electron shifts in the plasma frequency were estimated empirically, he Pines correction derived for a degenerate Fermi gas is shown herein to provide a reasonable estimate, even on the atomic scale. Thus, the model is moved to a complete theoretical base requiring no empirical adjustments, as characteristic of past applications. The principal remaining error is in the overestimation of the low-energy absorption properties that are characteristic of the plasma model in the region of the atomic discrete spectrum, although higher-energy phenomena are accurately represented, and even excitation-to-ionization ratios are given to fair accuracy. Mean excitation energies for covalent-bonded gases and solids, for ionic gases and crystals, and for metals are calculated using first-order models of the bonded states.

GASP cloud- and particle-encounter statistics and their application to LPC aircraft studies. Volume 1: Analysis and conclusions

Summary studies are presented for the entire cloud observation archieve from the NASA Global Atmospheric Sampling Program (GASP). Studies are also presented for GASP particle concentration data gathered concurrently with the cloud observations. Cloud encounters are shown on about 15 percent of the data samples overall, but the probability of cloud encounter is shown to vary significantly with altitude, latitude, and distance from the tropopause. Several meteorological circulation features are apparent in the latitudinal distribution of cloud cover, and the cloud encounter statistics are shown to be consistent with the classical mid-latitude cyclone model. Observations of clouds spaced more closely than 90 minutes are shown to be statistically dependent. The statistics for cloud and particle encounter are utilized to estimate the frequency of cloud encounter on long range airline routes, and to assess the probability and extent of laminar flow loss due to cloud or particle encounter by aircraft utilizing laminar flow control (LFC). It is shown that the probability of extended cloud encounter is too low, of itself, to make LFC impractical.

Modal vector estimation for closely-spaced-frequency modes

Identification of modal parameters is made more difficult if the system has repeated frequencies or even closely spaced frequencies. This paper discusses the problems associated with closely-spaced-frequency modes and describes two related methods for dealing with these problems. It is demonstrated that proper identification of the system parameters of such systems requires information from multiple inputs and/or multiple outputs. The analytical basis for the 'minimum coincident response method' is outlined, and examples of the use of these two techniques to extract model parameters are presented.

Reducing shuttle-payload dynamic interaction with notch filters

The use of notch filters centered on the estimated bending frequencies to reduce the effect of low-frequency Shuttle-payload dynamic interaction is investigated. The Shuttle-payload dynamics that are studied are with payloads attached to the Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (RMS). Other payload-orbiter connection such as payloads pivoted out of the cargo bay on a tilt table can lead to low-frequency bending modes. Payloads attached to the RMS will, however, present greater problems in that the bending modes will be hard to predict and will tend to vary with time as the RMS changes in orientation.

Projection filters for modal parameter estimate for flexible structures

Single-mode projection filters are developed for eigensystem parameter estimates from both analytical results and test data. Explicit formulations of these projection filters are derived using the pseudoinverse matrices of the controllability and observability matrices in general use. A global minimum optimization algorithm is developed to update the filter parameters by using interval analysis method. Modal parameters can be attracted and updated in the global sense within a specific region by passing the experimental data through the projection filters. For illustration of this method, a numerical example is shown by using a one-dimensional global optimization algorithm to estimate model frequencies and dampings.

Ray tracing survey of Z mode emissions from source regions in the high-altitude auroral zone

The ray tracing computer program described by Menietti and Lin (1985) was used to investigate the propagation of Z mode emissions from sources in the auroral zone. The calculation results indicate that the propagation is primarily perpendicular to the magnetic field line (horizontal propagation) for almost all sources considered, except when the wave source is assumed to be unrestricted by the cyclotron maser mechanism. While the propagation is initially downward, refraction rapidly increases the wave normal angle, and only propagation at near-constant altitude occurs. The frequency bandwidth estimated from the ray paths was found to be less than that observed by the DE 1 satellite. Large horizontal magnetic field gradients associated with field-aligned currents produce downward propagation but are still not sufficient to produce the observed bandwidths. The results suggest that wave growth may be due to mechanisms in addition to cyclotron maser resonance.

Single-mode projection filters for identification and state estimation of flexible structures

A global minimum optimization algorithm is developed to update the filter parameters by using the interval analysis method. For illustration of this new approach, a numerical example is shown by using a one-dimensional global optimization algorithm to estimate modal frequencies and damping.

Flutter Clearance of the F-18 High-angle-of-attack Research Vehicle with Experimental Wingtip Instrumentation Pods

An F-18 aircraft was modified with wingtip instrumentation pods for use in NASA's high-angle-of-attack research program. Ground vibration and flight flutter testing were performed to clear an acceptable flight envelope for the aircraft. Flight test utilized atmospheric turbulence for structural excitation; the aircraft displayed no adverse aeroelastic trends within the envelope tested. The data presented in this report include mode shapes from the ground vibration and estimates of frequency and damping as a function of Mach number.
