Nanoengineering of Complex Materials

We are primarily interested in two important biomimetic principles, namely, self-assembly based on supramolecular chemistry and the use of these structures to template in organic phases as observed in biomineralization. The projects proposed are inspired by some of our achievements in the previous funding period described above, and also by preliminary data gathered recently which we describe below. In addition to our broad objective of acquiring knowledge in supramolecular self-assembly and templating of organic–inorganic hybrid materials, we also propose here work on biomolecular structures based on DNA, peptide nucleic acids, and peptides which can serve as models for artificial materials based on biomimetic principles. The proposed work is divided into three sections, supramolecular systems, hybrid systems, and biomolecular and biological systems. In terms of functions, we are using systems that have relevance to solar cells, catalysis, dynamic/active materials, and ferroelectrics.

Room-Temperature Ferroelectric LiNb 6 Ba 5 Ti 4 O 30 Spinel Phase in a Nanocomposite Thin Film Form for Nonlinear Photonics

Tetragonal tungsten bronze (TTB) materials are one of the most promising classes of materials for ferroelectric and nonlinear optical devices, owing to their very unique noncentrosymmetric crystal structure. In this work, a new TTB phase of LiNb 6 Ba 5 Ti 4 O 30 (LNBTO) has been discovered and studied. A small amount of a secondary phase, LiTiO 2 (LTO), has been incorporated as nanopillars that are vertically embedded in the LNBTO matrix. The new multifunctional nanocomposite thin film presents exotic highly anisotropic microstructure and properties, e.g., strong ferroelectricity, high optical transparency, anisotropic dielectric function, and strong optical nonlinearity evidenced by the second harmonic generation results. An optical waveguide structure based on the stacks of α-Si on SiO 2 /LNBTO–LTO has been fabricated, exhibiting low optical dispersion with an optimized evanescent field staying in the LNBTO–LTO active layer. Lastly, this work highlights the combination of new TTB material designs and vertically aligned nanocomposite structures for further enhanced anisotropic and nonlinear properties.

Nonreciprocal directional dichroism at telecom wavelengths

Magnetoelectrics with ultra-low symmetry and spin-orbit coupling are well known to display a number of remarkable properties including nonreciprocal directional dichroism. As a polar and chiral magnet, Ni 3 TeO 6 is predicted to host this effect in three fundamentally different configurations, although only two have been experimentally verified. Inspired by the opportunity to unravel the structure-property relations of such a unique light-matter interaction, we combined magneto-optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to reveal nonreciprocity in the toroidal geometry and compared our findings with the chiral configurations. We find that formation of Ni toroidal moments is responsible for the largest effects near 1.1 eV—a tendency that is captured by our microscopic model and computational implementation. At the same time, we demonstrate deterministic control of nonreciprocal directional dichroism in Ni 3 TeO 6 across the entire telecom wavelength range. This discovery will accelerate the development of photonics applications that take advantage of unusual symmetry characteristics.

Constrained non-negative matrix factorization enabling real-time insights of in situ and high-throughput experiments

Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) is an appealing class of methods for performing unsupervised learning on streaming spectral data, particularly in time-sensitive applications such as in situ characterization of materials. These methods seek to decompose a dataset into a small number of components and weights that can compactly represent the underlying signal while effectively reconstructing the observations with minimal error. However, canonical NMF methods have no underlying requirement that the reconstruction uses components or weights that are representative of the true physical processes. In this work, we demonstrate how constraining a subset of the NMF weights or components as rigid priors, provided as known or assumed values, can provide significant improvement in revealing true underlying phenomena. We present a PyTorch-based method for efficiently applying constrained NMF and demonstrate its application to several synthetic examples. Our implementation allows an expert researcher-in-the-loop to provide and dynamically adjust the constraints during a live experiment involving streaming spectral data. Such interactive priors allow researchers to specify known or identified independent components, as well as functional expectations about the mixing or transitions between the components. We further demonstrate the application of this method to measured synchrotron x-ray total scattering data from in situ beamline experiments. In such a context, constrained NMF can result in a more interpretive and scientifically relevant decomposition than canonical NMF or other decomposition techniques. As a result, the details of the method are provided, along with general guidance for employing constrained NMF in the extraction of critical information and insights during time-sensitive experimental applications.

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N on GaN exhibits attractive high-K dielectric properties

Epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N thin films of ~100 nm thickness grown on metal polar GaN substrates are found to exhibit significantly enhanced relative dielectric permittivity (ε r ) values relative to AlN. ε r values of ~17–21 for Sc mole fractions of 17%–25% ( x = 0.17–0.25) measured electrically by capacitance–voltage measurements indicate that Sc x Al 1- x N has the largest relative dielectric permittivity of any existing nitride material. Since epitaxial Sc x Al 1- x N layers deposited on GaN also exhibit large polarization discontinuity, the heterojunction can exploit the in situ high-K dielectric property to extend transistor operation for power electronics and high-speed microwave applications.

Thermodynamic Theory of Proximity Ferroelectricity

Proximity ferroelectricity has recently been reported as a new design paradigm for inducing ferroelectricity, where a nonferroelectric polar material becomes a ferroelectric one by interfacing with a thin ferroelectric layer. Strongly polar materials, such as AlN and ZnO, which were previously unswitchable with an external field below their dielectric breakdown fields, can now be switched with practical coercive fields when they are in intimate proximity to a switchable ferroelectric. Here, we develop a general Landau-Ginzburg theory of proximity ferroelectricity in multilayers of nonferroelectrics and ferroelectrics to analyze their switchability and coercive fields. The theory predicts regimes of both “proximity switching,” where the multilayers collectively switch, and “proximity suppression,” where they collectively do not switch. The mechanism of the proximity ferroelectricity is an internal electric field determined by the polarization of the layers and their relative thickness in a self-consistent manner that renormalizes the double-well ferroelectric potential to lower the steepness of the switching barrier. Further reduction in the coercive field emerges from charged defects in the bulk that act as nucleation centers. The application of the theory to proximity ferroelectricity in Al x−1⁢ Sc x ⁢N/AlN and Zn 1−x ⁢Mg x ⁢O/ZnO bilayers is demonstrated. The theory further predicts that dielectric-ferroelectric and paraelectric-ferroelectric multilayers can potentially lead to induced ferroelectricity in the dielectric or paraelectric layers, resulting in the entire stack being switched, an exciting avenue for new discoveries. This thawing of “frozen ferroelectrics,” paraelectrics, and potentially dielectrics with high dielectric constants promises a large class of new ferroelectrics with exciting prospects for previously unrealizable domain-patterned optoelectronic and memory technologies.

Phase Diagrams and Piezoelectric Properties of Wurtzite Al1-x-yScxGdyN Heterostructural Alloys

Ternary nitride alloys based on wurtzite AlN are a promising platform to realize functional materials, particularly ferroelectrics and optical emitters, that can smoothly integrate with conventional microelectronics. Here, a strategic design is presented to enable multifunctional materials by substituting multiple elements into AlN to create quaternary nitride alloys. By combining computational predictions and combinatorial thin film synthesis, the phase diagram of these quaternary Al-Sc-Gd-N alloys (or pseudo-ternary heterostructural AlN-ScN-GdN alloys) is successfully predicted as a function of effective temperature, and we experimentally grow Al1-x-xScxGdyN thin films for the first time. It is revealed that Al1-x-xScxGdyN crystallizes in a wurtzite-derived structure for X + y <~ 0.35, consistent with the calculated phase diagram. The computational investigation explores whether co-substitution induces cooperative effects on these alloys' piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties, finding that it is beneficial for reducing the polarization switching barrier. We calculate that Al1-x-xScxGdyN thin films should display ferroelectric switching. This is supported by our experimental measurements of a high optical bandgap, enhanced piezoelectric coefficient, and a change in the calculated polarization switching mechanism, and we achieve preliminary ferroelectric switching that experimentally realizes the prediction. Overall, our work sets the foundation toward quaternary wurtzite-nitride-based multifunctional materials, including piezoelectrics, ferroelectrics, and possibly even multiferroics.

Two-Dimensional Ferroelectric Altermagnets: From Model to Material Realization

Multiferroic altermagnets offer new opportunities for magnetoelectric coupling and electrically tunable spintronics. However, due to intrinsic symmetry conflicts between altermagnetism and ferroelectricity, achieving their coexistence, known as ferroelectric altermagnets (FEAM), remains an outstanding challenge, especially in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Here, we propose a universal, symmetry-based design principle for 2D FEAM, supported by tight-binding models and first-principles calculations. We show that lattice distortions can break spin equivalence and introduce the necessary rotation-related symmetry, enabling altermagnetism with electrically reversible spin splitting. Guided by this framework, we identify a family of 2D vanadium oxyhalides and sulfide halides as promising FEAM candidates. In these compounds, pseudo Jahn-Teller distortions and Peierls-like dimerization cooperatively establish the required symmetry conditions. Here, we further propose the magneto-optical Kerr effect as an experimental probe to confirm FEAM and its electric spin reversal. Furthermore, our findings provide a practical framework for 2D FEAM and advancing electrically controlled spintronic devices.

Order–Disorder Phase Stabilization by Pressure‐Induced Charge Transfer Enhances the Ferroelectric Photovoltaic Effect in Multiferroic BaFe 4 O 7

Abstract Multiferroic ferroelectric photovoltaic (FPV) materials, combining magnetic and ferroelectric properties, are of paramount importance for optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications. However, optimizing both the remanent polarization and the optical bandgap—key factors for enhanced FPV performance—presents a significant challenge due to their trade‐off. This work shows that pressure‐induced charge transfer between different metal sites can break this trade‐off. Above ≈20 GPa, charge transfer between different trivalent iron (Fe) sites in the multiferroic material BaFe 4 O 7 leads to Fe valence disproportionation, FeO 4 tetrahedra disorder, and Jahn–Teller distortion of FeO 6 octahedra. These changes reduce the bandgap, lower resistivity, and enhance ferroelectric polarization, resulting in a 2.5‐fold increase in photocurrent. Upon decompression, BaFe 4 O 7 retains an order–disorder structure, optimal ferroelectric and optical properties at ambient conditions. This work provides a novel pathway to simultaneously optimizing ferroelectricity and bandgap via pressure‐induced charge transfer, overcoming the traditional trade‐off in FPV materials, and offers a promising approach for developing high polarization performance, narrow‐bandgap FPV materials.

Ferro-ionic states and domains morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles

Unique polar properties of nanoscale hafnia-zirconia oxides (Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 ) are of great interest for condensed matter physics, nanophysics, and advanced applications. These properties are connected (at least partially) to the ionic–electronic and electrochemical phenomena at the surface, interfaces, and/or internal grain boundaries. Here, we calculated the phase diagrams, dielectric permittivity, spontaneous polar, and antipolar ordering, as well as the domain structure morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles covered by ionic–electronic charge originating from surface electrochemical adsorption. We revealed that the ferro-ionic coupling supports the polar long-range order in nanoscale Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 , induces, and/or enlarges the stability region of the labyrinthine domains toward smaller sizes and smaller environmental dielectric constant at low concentrations of the surface ions. The ferro-ionic coupling causes the transition to the single-domain ferro-ionic state at high concentrations of the surface ions. We predict that the labyrinthine domain states, being multiple-degenerated, may significantly affect the emergence of the negative differential capacitance state in the nanograined/nanocrystalline Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 films.

Heteroanionic Ruddlesden-Popper ferroelectrics from anion order and octahedral tilts

We describe a strategy to design ferroelectric heteroanionic materials based on the coupling of anion order and octahedral tilts in n = 1 Ruddlesden-Popper structures, which allows noncentrosymmetric and polar compounds to arise from centrosymmetric anion-ordered structures. Here we investigate the relative phase stabilities of the polymorphs of Sr 2 ScO 3 F and Ca 2 ScO 3 F derived from this coupling using electronic structure calculations. We find that large degrees of octahedral tilting can stabilize different anion orders derived from assembly of [ScO 5 F] 8– octahedra. To further understand the link between octahedral tilting and anion order, we quantitatively separate the contributions of electrostatics and covalent interactions to the stability of tilts. We find that the tilts are driven primarily by covalent interactions and that local out-of-plane polar displacements, induced from the anion order, further stabilize the octahedral tilts through the pseudo-Jahn-Teller effect.

Twinning microstructure in the solid-phase epitaxial crystallization of BaTiO 3

Amorphous BaTiO 3 layers deposited on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates at room temperature were subsequently crystallized using solid phase epitaxy (SPE). Heating an initially amorphous BaTiO 3 layer in air at 650 °C for 3 h resulted in crystallization with components in two distinct crystallographic orientation relationships with respect to the substrate. Part of the volume of the BaTiO 3 layer crystallized in a cube-on-cube relationship with the substrate. Other volumes crystallized in four variants of a 70.5° rotation about $\langle$110$\rangle$, resulting in a $\langle$221$\rangle$ surface normal in each case. Each of these four variants forms a Σ = 3 coincident site lattice with respect to the SrTiO 3 substrate and the cube-on-cube oriented BaTiO 3 . Heating for the same duration and temperature in a reducing gas atmosphere resulted in the formation of polycrystalline BaTiO 3 with no preferred crystallographic orientation. The dependence on the gas atmosphere indicates that it may be possible to tune the annealing time, temperature, and atmosphere to produce a single crystalline BTO on STO by SPE or produce a desired distribution of orientations.

Sn-modified BaTiO 3 thin film with enhanced polarization

Hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of Sn-modified BaTiO 3 films was realized with varying domain structures and crystal symmetries across the entire composition space. Macroscopic and microscopic structures and the crystal symmetry of these thin films were determined using a combination of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) polarimetry and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). SHG polarimetry revealed a variation in the global crystal symmetry of the films from tetragonal (P4mm) to cubic (PM3¯m) across the composition range, x = 0 to 1 in BaTi 1–x Sn x O 3 (BTSO). STEM imaging shows that the long-range polar order observed when the Sn content is low (x = 0.09) transformed to a short-range polar order as the Sn content increased (x = 0.48). Consistent with atomic displacement measurements from STEM, the largest polarization was obtained at the lowest Sn content of x = 0.09 in Sn-modified BaTiO 3 as determined by SHG. Furthermore, these results agree with recent bulk ceramic reports and further identify this material system as a potential replacement for Pb-containing relaxor-based thin film devices.

Anisotropic epitaxial stabilization of a low-symmetry ferroelectric with enhanced electromechanical response

Here piezoelectrics interconvert mechanical energy and electric charge and are widely used in actuators and sensors. The best performing materials are ferroelectrics at a morphotropic phase boundary, where several phases coexist. Switching between these phases by electric field produces a large electromechanical response. In ferroelectric BiFeO3, strain can create a morphotropic-phase-boundary-like phase mixture and thus generate large electric-field-dependent strains. However, this enhanced response occurs at localized, randomly positioned regions of the film. Here, we use epitaxial strain and orientation engineering in tandem-anisotropic epitaxy-to craft a low-symmetry phase of BiFeO3 that acts as a structural bridge between the rhombohedral-like and tetragonal-like polymorphs. Interferometric displacement sensor measurements reveal that this phase has an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient of x2.4 compared with typical rhombohedral-like BiFeO3. Band-excitation frequency response measurements and first-principles calculations provide evidence that this phase undergoes a transition to the tetragonal-like polymorph under electric field, generating an enhanced piezoelectric response throughout the film and associated field-induced reversible strains. These results offer a route to engineer thin-film piezoelectrics with improved functionalities, with broader perspectives for other functional oxides.

Revealing atomic-scale switching pathways in van der Waals ferroelectrics

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials hold the potential for ultrascaled ferroelectric (FE) devices due to their silicon compatibility and robust polarization down to atomic scale. However, the inherently weak vdW interactions enable facile sliding between layers, introducing complexities beyond those encountered in conventional ferroelectric materials and presenting substantial challenges in uncovering intricate switching pathways. Here, we combine atomic-resolution imaging under in situ electrical biasing conditions with first-principles calculations to unravel the atomic-scale switching mechanisms in SnSe, a vdW group IV monochalcogenide. Our results uncover the coexistence of a consecutive 90° switching pathway and a direct 180° switching pathway from antiferroelectric (AFE) to FE order in this vdW system. Atomic-scale investigations and strain analysis reveal that the switching processes simultaneously induce interlayer sliding and compressive strain, while the lattice remains coherent despite the presence of multidomain structures. These findings elucidate vdW ferroelectric switching dynamics at atomic scale and lay the foundation for the rational design of 2D ferroelectric nanodevices.

Structural characterization of highly alloyed (Al,Gd)N thin films

Highly alloyed (Al,Gd)N is of potential interest in a variety of applications, including neutron detection and in devices such as non-volatile memory. Gd has been shown to have very low equilibrium solubility in AlN at room temperature; however, non-equilibrium deposition techniques such as sputtering are able to deposit thin films, which incorporate large amounts of Gd. Here, we characterize a highly-alloyed (Al,Gd)N combinatorial thin film grown by RF sputtering on a GaN substrate, looking for any evidence of chemical or phase segregation or structural disorder in the films. Compositions with between 13% and 32% Gd (on a cation basis) were studied. No evidence was found for chemical or phase segregation in any studied composition. Higher degrees of Gd incorporation led to greater structural disorder in the film and a tendency toward amorphization; however, electron diffraction shows that the film does not become fully amorphous at any of the studied compositions, instead retaining textured local order even at 32% Gd. Electron energy loss spectra suggest that the material retains a locally wurtzite-like tetrahedral bonding environment at all studied compositions.

tert-butoxides as precursors for atomic layer deposition of alkali metal containing thin films

Alkali metal containing materials have become increasingly attractive in a world hunting for sustainable energy materials and green functional devices. Lithium- and sodium battery technology, lead-free piezo- and ferroelectric devices, and record-breaking alkali doped tandem perovskite solar cells are among the applications where alkali metal-containing thin films get increasing attention. Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is one of the enabling thin film deposition techniques that offer chemical and geometrical versatility to realize the implementation of such thin films on an applicable scale. The drawback has until recently been a lack of available precursor chemistry that offers self-limiting growth that is fundamental to ALD. The alkali metal tert-butoxides have been shown to exhibit the necessary properties to facilitate saturating growth for Li-, Na-, K-, and Rb-containing compounds. However, the behavior of the tert-butoxides in ALD-growth has been considered difficult to unravel, with processes exhibiting limited control and low reproducibility. Very little has been reported on trends in reaction mechanisms as the mass of the alkali metal increases. Herein, we summarize the existing literature on the use of alkali metal tert-butoxides as precursors in ALD. We consider differences in the structure and behavior of the tert-butoxides as the alkali metal cation becomes heavier. In addition, we present precursor synthesis routes and key information on precursor structure, stability, and mechanistic behavior. Finally, we provide the first ever report of Cs-containing films by ALD to complement previous work on its lighter counterparts.
