Various facets of magnetic charge correlation: Micromagnetic and distorted-wave Born approximation simulations study

The emergent concept of the magnetic charge quasiparticle provides a new realm to study the evolution of magnetic properties in two-dimensional artificially frustrated magnets. Here we report on the exploration of magnetic phases due to various magnetic charge correlation using the complementary numerical techniques of micromagnetic and distorted-wave Born approximation simulations in artificial permalloy honeycomb lattice. The honeycomb element length varies between 10 nm and 100 nm, while the width and thickness are kept within the single domain limit. In addition to the charge ordered loop state, we observe disordered charge arrangement, characterized by the random distribution of ±Q charges, in single domain size honeycomb lattice. As the length of the honeycomb element increases, low multiplicity magnetic charges tend to form contiguous bands in thinner lattice. Thin honeycomb lattice with 100 nm element length exhibits a perfect spin ice pattern, which remains unaffected by the modest increase in the width of element size. We simulate scattering profiles under the pretext of distorted-wave Born approximation formalism for the micromagnetic phases. The results are expected to provide useful guidance in the experimental investigation of magnetic phases in an artificial honeycomb magnet.

Parity breaking at faceted crystal growth fronts during ice templating

Directional solidification of water-based solutions has emerged as a versatile technique to template hierarchical porous materials, but this nonequilibrium process remains incompletely understood. Here, in this study, we use phase-field simulations to shed light on the mechanism that selects the growth direction of the lamellar ice structure that templates those materials. Our results show that this selection can be understood within the general framework of spontaneous parity breaking, yielding quantitative predictions for the tilt angle of lamellae with respect to the thermal axis. The results provide a theoretical basis to interpret a wide range of experimental observations.

Versatility and Complexity: Common and Uncommon Facets of LysR-Type Transcriptional Regulators

LysR-type transcriptional regulators (LTTRs) form one of the largest families of bacterial regulators. They are widely distributed and contribute to all aspects of metabolism and physiology. Most are homotetramers, with each subunit composed of an N-terminal DNA-binding domain followed by a long helix connecting to an effector-binding domain. LTTRs typically bind DNA in the presence or absence of a small-molecule ligand (effector). In response to cellular signals, conformational changes alter DNA interactions, contact with RNA polymerase, and sometimes contact with other proteins. Many are dual-function repressor–activators, although different modes of regulation may occur at multiple promoters. This review presents an update on the molecular basis of regulation, the complexity of regulatory schemes, and applications in biotechnology and medicine. The abundance of LTTRs reflects their versatility and importance. While a single regulatory model cannot describe all family members, a comparison of similarities and differences provides a framework for future study.

The multi-faceted inverted harmonic oscillator: Chaos and complexity

The harmonic oscillator is the paragon of physical models; conceptually and computationally simple, yet rich enough to teach us about physics on scales that span classical mechanics to quantum field theory. This multifaceted nature extends also to its inverted counterpart, in which the oscillator frequency is analytically continued to pure imaginary values. In this article we probe the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) with recently developed quantum chaos diagnostics such as the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) and the circuit complexity. In particular, we study the OTOC for the displacement operator of the IHO with and without a non-Gaussian cubic perturbation to explore genuine and quasi scrambling respectively. In addition, we compute the full quantum Lyapunov spectrum for the inverted oscillator, finding a paired structure among the Lyapunov exponents. We also use the Heisenberg group to compute the complexity for the time evolved displacement operator, which displays chaotic behaviour. Finally, we extended our analysis to N-inverted harmonic oscillators to study the behaviour of complexity at the different timescales encoded in dissipation, scrambling and asymptotic regimes.

Application of NCOREL to conical multi-finned and multi-faceted configurations

A more versatile analytic conformal mapping approach for grid generation is implemented in a full potential supersonic flow code (NCOREL). Configurations such as multi-finned bodies and wings with vertical tails cannot be treated using a single conformal mapping transformation for grid generation. Instead, a series of analytic conformal mappings are used in progression to generate grids that are capable of resolving the complex multiple shock flow fields that exist about these configurations. Aplications of the grid generation techniques are presented for a variety of cross sections along with their conical full potential flow solutions.
