NASA Phase2 Unlimited Rights Final Report Research and Technology for Aerospace Propulsion Systems (RTAPS) Task Order: ERA Advanced Core Compressor Technology Program

As part of the NASA Integrated Systems Research Program (ISRP), Environmentally Responsible Aviation (ERA) Project, NASA GRC and GE Aviation have partnered to investigate the technology barriers associated with improved fuel economy of large gas turbine engines. Crucial to improving fuel economy is the increase in pressure ratio (PR) of the core high pressure compressor (HPC). A key enabler to increasing HPC pressure ratios are new technology front stage airfoil designs that have higher efficiency, higher pressure ratios and improvements in front stage part-power operability. The purpose of this work is to design and test two high pressure ratio, high efficiency front block designs. The baseline design, hereafter referred to as Build 1, is similar to what would be found in a high efficiency 30:1 PR class HPC. A redesigned front block with improved blading will also be tested and hereafter be referred to as Build 2. The goal of Build 2 is to increase stage aero loading (increase stage pressure ratio) beyond Build 1 while maintaining equivalent efficiency and stall margin. The detailed inter-stage and traverse data from the two builds will be used to improve understanding of the complex flow physics at high-speed and part-speed conditions that impact performance and operability. By addressing, understanding and solving the challenges associated with aerodynamic losses and stage matching better design strategies can be incorporated in future core compressors with higher efficiency, thereby enabling improvement in mission fuel burn while still meeting operability requirements.

A Golden Era of PSC Observations From the A-Train By CALIOP and MLS

The fundamental role of polar stratospheric clouds (PSCs) in the depletion of stratospheric ozone is well established. Heterogeneous reactions on PSCs convert the stable chlorine reservoirs HCl and ClONO2 to chlorine radicals that destroy ozone catalytically. PSCs also prolong ozone depletion by delaying chlorine deactivation through the removal of gas-phase HNO3 and H2O by sedimentation of large PSC particles. There has been substantial recent progress in our understanding of PSC processes due to the long-term, vortex-wide observations from the CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization) lidar on the CALIPSO (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations) satellite and the MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder) on the Aura satellite. The CALIOP observations provide unprecedented high spatial resolution information on particulate aerosol/PSC morphology and composition, while MLS provides complementary collocated measurements of gas-phase HNO3 and H2O, the major constituents of all PSC particles. The combined analyses of these datasets have enabled better PSC composition discrimination and provided valuable new insight into PSC formation processes and particle growth kinetics. The more than 17 years of CALIOP and MLS data have uniquely captured the primary aspects of the seasonal and multi-year variability of PSCs in the Arctic and Antarctic, enabling the development of a state-of-the-art reference PSC data record and climatology. In this presentation, we highlight the significant advances in our understanding achieved during this golden era of spaceborne PSC observations and identify remaining gaps in our knowledge that future spaceborne lidar missions may help resolve.

Evolving efforts to maintain and improve XPS analysis quality in an era of increasingly diverse uses and users

Based on literature analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) use continues to increase exponentially. This increased use is accompanied by anecdotal reports and systematic analyses indicating a growing presence of significantly flawed data analyses. Recognition of this problem within the surface analysis community has increased with an understanding that both inexperienced users and increased use of XPS outside the surface analysis community contribute to the problem. The XPS community has initiated several efforts to help address the problem, which is not unique to XPS. This paper describes some of the specific problems identified and some of the community efforts intended to address them. Here, we describe activities focused on three specific issues: (i) requests for detailed guides and protocols and bite-sized versions of information for non-experts, (ii) incomplete data and analysis reporting, and (iii) the high rate of peak fitting problems. A 2019 survey identified the need for guides, protocols, and standards to assist XPS users. One set of such guides has been published, and another is being assembled. Providing incremental bites of useful information is the goal of a series of papers on specific challenges to surface analysis with example solutions has been initiated as Notes and Insights papers in Surface and Interface Analysis. Examination of XPS-containing papers finds that information to establish the credibility and reproducibility of XPS results is often very incomplete. Unfortunately, ISO and ASTM standards require an amount of parameter reporting that seems excessive and unrealistic for many research publications. Initial approaches to develop and distribute a graded approach to parameter reporting are briefly described. Multiple efforts are underway to address the high rate of problems associated with photoelectron peak fitting. These include guides to peak fitting, guides to peak identification and fitting for specific elements, and the development of a peak fitting social network. The fitting social network is designed to facilitate interactions between new and experienced XPS users; analysts trying to fit XPS data (for publication or other reasons) can ask questions and establish dynamic conversations. Encouraging and enabling high-quality XPS analysis and reporting requires several different types of effort from all members of the surface and interface analysis community.

Chapter 16: Connecting Microbial Genotype with Phenotype in the Omics Era

Although rational design-based metabolic engineering has been applied widely to obtain promising microbial biocatalysts, conventional strategies such as adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) and mutagenesis are still efficient approaches to improve microorganisms for exceptional features such as a broad spectrum of substrate utilization, robustness of cell growth, as well as high titer, yield, and productivity of the target products. In this chapter, we describe the procedure to generate mutant strains with desired phenotypes using ALE and a new mutagenesis approach of Atmosphere and Room Temperature Plasma (ARTP). In addition, we discuss the methodology to combine next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based genome-resequencing and RNA-Seq transcriptomics approaches to characterize the mutant strains and connect the phenotypes with their corresponding genotypic changes.

Safety Design of Water Infrastructures in A Modern Era

In this chapter, we review the current practice of engineering safety design of large water management infrastructures. Those large infrastructures are designed using probable maximum precipitation (PMP) to withstand extreme conditions, but climate change has been posing challenges on the conventional PMP estimation approach. We discuss multiple limitations of the current approaches, and propose a few possible solutions based on the advancement of atmospheric modeling and statistical analysis of extreme precipitation mechanisms.

Completely dark photons from gravitational particle production during the inflationary era

Starting with the de Broglie-Proca Lagrangian for a massive vector field, we calculate the number density of particles resulting from gravitational particle production (GPP) during inflation, with detailed consideration to the evolution of the number density through the reheating. We find plausible scenarios for the production of dark-photon dark matter of mass in a wide range, as low as a micro-electron volt to 10 14 GeV. Gravitational particle production does not depend on any coupling of the dark photon to standard-model particles.

Diagnostic imaging of hepatocellular carcinoma at community hospitals and their tertiary referral center in the era of LI-RADS: a quality assessment study

Purpose: To assess guideline compliance and quality of hepatocellular carcinoma, (HCC) diagnostic imaging within community hospitals (CH) and their Tertiary referral center (TRC) in a moderately high incidence region. Methods: Initial diagnostic workup CT/MRI scans of 251 patients (122 CH, 112 TRC, 17 Non-TRC academic) with HCC over a 15-month period were assessed for Liver reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) guideline compliance. 269 scans (182 CT, 87 MRI) were qualitatively evaluated by 2 independent blinded radiologists for arterial timing, overall image quality, noise and sharpness, with quantification of interobserver variability. The contrast enhancement ratio (CER) for the largest HCC on each scan was calculated using pre- and post-contrast images. Results: 103/104 (99%) of TRC and 44/78 (56%) of CH CTs adhered to LI–RADS imaging guidelines (P < 0.0001). Lack of delayed phase accounted for 32/34 (94%) of noncompliant CH CTs. Regarding MRI, 19/19 (100%) of TRC and 60/68 (88%) of CH scans were adherent (P = 0.12). For both modalities, overall image quality, noise and sharpness were rated significantly higher for TRC than CH. There was moderate interobserver agreement with intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.73, 0.70 and 0.63, respectively. Arterial-phase timing was rated adequate for CT in 75/104 TRC (72%) and 10/68 (14%) CH scans (P < 0.0001) and for MRI in 8/19 (42%) TRC and 23/68 (33%) CH scans (P = 0.17). The CER was significantly higher for TRC versus CH (2.9 vs. 1.9, P < 0.001) and MRI (0.9 vs. 0.7, P = 0.03). Conclusions: Community hospital HCC diagnostic scans significantly lag in critical quality parameters of tumor enhancement, arterial phase timing, perceived image quality, and LI-RADS CT technique compliance compared to a TRC.

High-heat transfer lithium-ion batteries: A new era in battery thermal management

Despite advances in lithium-ion battery technology, critical challenges remain that must be addressed to accelerate electric vehicle (EV) adoption and global energy transformation. Significantly improved battery thermal management (BTM) is key to overcoming these challenges. BTM approaches focus on increasing heat transfer coefficients via air, liquid, or refrigerant cooling, but less attention is given to reducing the battery's thermal resistance, a major bottleneck for heat transfer. This work introduces a novel approach to reduce battery thermal resistance by integrating in-plane heat transfer with optimized cell geometry, minimized thermal resistances, and reduced interfacial resistances, representing a departure from previous methods. The standard prismatic can cell incorporating this technology is referred to as the high heat transfer (HHT) battery. An equivalent resistance battery thermal model is developed for speed and accuracy, validated against experimental data in the literature, demonstrating strong correlation and ensuring reliable predictions for real-world performance. Thermal performance metrics of the conventional and HHT batteries are compared using a parametric study with air, liquid, and refrigerant boundary conditions across a range of aspect ratios. The HHT battery shows a heat removal rate up to 20 times higher than a conventional battery. These findings suggest that HHT technology could be transformative for EV battery performance, enabling fast charging, mitigating thermal runaway, extending battery life, reducing cold-weather power loss, increasing reliability, lowering costs, and enabling higher energy density, all critical for EV adoption and energy transformation. Future work will focus on prototyping and real-world testing to refine these findings for commercial-scale applications.

Operando methods: A new era of electrochemistry

One of the grand challenges facing electrochemistry is to directly resolve the complex nature of (electro)catalyst active sites and capture real-time “movies” of reaction dynamics, i.e. “watching chemistry in action”. The need for such fundamental understanding has stimulated the development of operando/in situ methods, which have greatly enhanced our ability to identify activity descriptors of electrocatalysts and establish structure–property relationships of energy materials. Here, this review summarizes the frontiers of operando electrochemical liquid-cell scanning transmission electron microscopy and correlative synchrotron X-ray methods, which are complementary tools to comprehensively investigate reaction dynamics across multiple spatiotemporal scales. In an effort to encourage greater adoption of advanced operando methods by the general electrochemistry community, this review points out the need to benchmark electrochemistry in confined and heterogenous liquid environment with minimal beam-induced damage. We anticipate that multimodal operando methods will become indispensable for understanding interfacial reaction mechanisms for the broad chemistry and energy materials communities.
