MERIT-Plus Dataset: Delineation of endorheic basins in 5 and 15 min upscaled river networks

Endorheic drainage basins, those inland basins not connected directly to ocean, are essential for hydrological modeling of global and regional water balances, land surface water storage, gravity anomalies, sea level rise, etc. Within many hydrological model frameworks, river basins are defined by digital river networks through their flow direction and connectivity datasets. Here we present an improvement to gridded flow direction data and its derivatives produced from upscaled global 5 and 15 arc minute MERIT networks. We explicitly label endorheic and exorheic drainage basins and alter the delineation of endorheic basins by merging small inland watersheds to the adjacent host basins. The resulting datasets have a significantly reduced number of endorheic basins while preserving the total land portion of those basins since most of the merged catchments were inside other larger endorheic areas. We developed and present here the endorheic basin delineation method. This method performs an analysis of the contributing river and basin geometry relative to the location of the flow end point (i.e. potential endorheic lake), proximity of the latter to the drainage basin boundary and the elevation difference between the basin's lowest point and potential spillover location at the basin boundary. The new digital river network was validated using the University of New Hampshire Water Balance Model by comparing the water balance of endorheic inland depressions with modeled accumulation of water in their inland lakes based on the observed historical climate drivers used by WBM.

MSD CoP Webinar: "Advances in MSD-LIVE to Support the MSD Community of Practice"

Context: This webinar was hosted by the MultiSector Dynamics Community of Practice (MSD CoP; https://multisectordynamics.org). Advances in MSD-LIVE to Support the MSD Community of Practice Presenters: Casey Burleyson and Zoe Guillen (Pacific Northwest National Laboratory) Abstract: The MultiSector Dynamics Living, Intuitive, Value-adding, Environment (MSD-LIVE; msdlive.org) is a cloud-based data management system and advanced computing platform that enables MSD researchers to document and archive their data, run their models and analysis tools, and share their data, software, and workflows within the MSD Community of Practice. Recently, several high-profile datasets have attracted many new users to MSD-LIVE. This webinar has two goals: 1) To refamiliarize the MSD community and new users with the components of the platform (e.g., the data repository, model training notebooks, and data dashboards) and to highlight examples of how these components are advancing MSD science and 2) To demonstrate new features in v3 of the platform, released in late 2025. The main new feature in v3 is the ability to interactively explore data in MSD-LIVE without downloading it. MSD-LIVE users can now click a button in our data repository and launch a blank Jupyter notebook with access to the underlying data on AWS. Users can use the notebook to write analysis, visualization, or subsetting routines that process the data directly on the AWS cloud. We also added a GitHub integration feature that allows users to share analysis or visualization code they develop with the community of MSD-LIVE users. The webinar will wrap up with a look at what's coming next for MSD-LIVE in 2026. Moderator: Patrick M. Reed (MSD CoP Facilitation Team) This webinar was held on: May 12th, 2026 from 1-2 PM EST.

plexosdb: A Modular Library for Programmatic PLEXOS Model Construction

plexosdb is a lightweight Python library for constructing PLEXOS models using a SQLite-backed data structure. It provides a clear, modular interface that maps relational data directly to model components. By leveraging SQLite and idiomatic Python, it enables fast iteration and reproducible workflows. The result is a performant, composable foundation for scalable PLEXOS model development.

Computer program calculates and plots surface area and pore size distribution data

Computer program calculates surface area and pore size distribution of powders, metals, ceramics, and catalysts, and prints and plots the desired data directly. Surface area calculations are based on the gas adsorption technique of Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller, and pore size distribution calculations are based on the gas adsorption technique of Pierce.

An On Board Processor (OBP) for OAO C

A stored program computer and its application on OAO is considered. The parallel computer has a memory capacity of 16,384 words of 18 bits each, one central processor unit, two 4096 word memory units, and one input/output unit. The I/O has no direct data connection with the CPU so that all data flow between these two units must pass through memory by way of the memory data bus. The primary functions of the onboard computer are auxiliary command storage, spacecraft monitoring and malfunction reporting, data compression and status summary, and possible performance of emergency corrective action.

System safety engineering in the development of advanced surface transportation vehicles

Applications of system safety engineering to the development of advanced surface transportation vehicles are described. As a pertinent example, the paper describes a safety engineering efforts tailored to the particular design and test requirements of the Tracked Air Cushion Research Vehicle (TACRV). The test results obtained from this unique research vehicle provide significant design data directly applicable to the development of future tracked air cushion vehicles that will carry passengers in comfort and safety at speeds up to 300 miles per hour.

New aspects of subsonic aerodynamic noise theory

A theory of aerodynamic noise is presented which differs from Lighthill's theory primarily in the way in which convection of the noise sources is treated. The sound directivity pattern obtained from the present theory agrees better with jet-noise directivity data than does that obtained from Lighthill's theory. The results imply that the shear-noise contribution to jet noise is smaller than previously expected.

Hypersonic aerodynamic characteristics of NR-ATP orbiter, orbiter with external tank, and ascent configuration

A scale model of the North American Rockwell ATP Orbiter with and without the external tank has been tested in a 22-inch helium tunnel at Mach 20 and a Reynolds number based on model length, of 2.14 times one million. Longitudinal and lateral-directional data were determined for the orbiter alone while only longitudinal characteristics and elevon roll effectiveness were investigated for the orbiter/tank combination. Oil flow and electron beam flow visualization studies were conducted for the orbiter alone, orbiter with external tank and the ascent configuration.

Soil mechanics

The soil mechanics experiment on the Apollo 17 mission to the Taurus-Littrow area of the moon is discussed. The objectives of the experiment were to determine the physical characteristics and mechanical properties of the lunar soil at the surface and subsurface in lateral directions. Data obtained on the lunar surface in conjunction with observations of returned samples of lunar soil are used to determine in-place density and porosity profiles and to determine strength characteristics on local and regional scales.

Toward the correctable-interference transonic wind tunnel

The concept of a correctable-interference transonic wind tunnel combining a capability for wall-interference assessment with a limited capability for wall control is introduced. Recent progress toward achieving the interference assessment capability is described. The feasibility of using experimentally measured data directly as boundary values for the assessment in lieu of more generally formulated but less accurate wall boundary conditions is demonstrated for two-dimensional subsonic flows. Also, a procedure for transonic analysis of wall interference which leads to a rational definition of the wall-induced perturbation field within the context of nonlinear transonic flow computations is outlined in principle.
