Transverse Λ polarization in 𝑒 +⁢ 𝑒 − annihilations and in SIDIS processes at the EIC within TMD factorization

We present a phenomenological study on the role of charm contribution and SU(2) isospin symmetry in the extraction of the Λ polarizing fragmentation functions from e + e – → Λ ↑ ($\overline{Λ}$ ↑ )h+X annihilation processes. We adopt the well-established transverse-momentum-dependent factorization formalism, within the Collins-Soper-Sterman evolution scheme at next-to-leading logarithm accuracy, carefully exploiting the role of the nonperturbative component of the polarizing fragmentation function. We then discuss the impact of these results on the predictions for transverse Λ, $\overline{Λ}$ polarization in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at typical energies of the future Electron-Ion Collider.

First simultaneous global QCD analysis of dihadron fragmentation functions and transversity parton distribution functions

We perform a comprehensive study within quantum chromodynamics (QCD) of dihadron observables in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, including recent cross section data from Belle and azimuthal asymmetries from STAR. We extract simultaneously for the first time π + π − dihadron fragmentation functions (DiFFs) and the nucleon transversity distributions for up and down quarks as well as antiquarks. For the transversity distributions we impose their small- x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. In addition, we utilize a new definition of DiFFs that has a number density interpretation to then calculate expectation values for the dihadron invariant mass and momentum fraction. Furthermore, we investigate the compatibility of our transversity results with those from single-hadron fragmentation (from a transverse momentum dependent/collinear twist-3 framework) and the nucleon tensor charges computed in lattice QCD. We find a universal nature to all of this available information. Future measurements of dihadron production can significantly further this research, especially, as we show, those that are sensitive to the region of large parton momentum fractions. Polarized TMD fragmentation functions for 𝐽/𝜓 production

We calculate the matching, at leading order, of the transverse momentum-dependent fragmentation functions (TMDFFs) for light quarks and gluons fragmenting to a 𝐽/𝜓 onto polarized nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) TMDFFs. The NRQCD TMDFFs have an operator product expansion in terms of nonperturbative NRQCD production matrix elements. Using the results we obtain, we make predictions for the light quark fragmentation contribution to the production of polarized 𝐽/𝜓 in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) both for unpolarized and longitudinally polarized beams. These results are an important contribution to polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in SIDIS and thus are needed for comparison with experiments at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

SIDIS at small x at next-to-leading order: Gluon contribution

We calculate the contribution of gluons to single inclusive hadron production at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small x using the color glass condensate formalism. It is shown that the only divergence present is the standard collinear divergence, which is absorbed into scale evolution of quark-hadron fragmentation function. Our calculations are performed at finite N c and we provide general finite N c expressions for the structure of Wilson lines appearing in inclusive dihadron and single hadron production cross sections. We also comment on how one can obtain rapidity distribution of hadron multiplicities from our results. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Analysis of parton distributions in a pion with Bézier parametrizations

We explore the role of parametrizations for nonperturbative QCD functions in global analyses, with a specific application to extending a phenomenological analysis of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the charged pion realized in the xFitter fitting framework. The parametrization dependence of PDFs in our pion fits substantially enlarges the uncertainties from the experimental sources estimated in the previous analyses. We systematically explore the parametrization dependence by employing a novel technique to automate generation of polynomial parametrizations for PDFs that makes use of Bézier curves. This technique is implemented in a ++ module that is included in the xFitter program. Our analysis reveals that the sea and gluon distributions in the pion are not well disentangled, even when considering measurements in leading-neutron deep inelastic scattering. For example, the pion PDF solutions with a vanishing gluon and large quark sea are still experimentally allowed, which elevates the importance of ongoing lattice and nonperturbative QCD calculations, together with the planned pion scattering experiments, for conclusive studies of the pion structure. Polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in semi-inclusive DIS at large 𝑄 2 : Comparing quark fragmentation and photon-gluon fusion

We compare the relative importance of different mechanisms for polarized 𝐽/𝜓 production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering processes at large 𝑄 2 . The transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework and nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics are used to study the leading contributions from light quark fragmentation to polarized 𝐽/𝜓, and compared to direct production via photon-gluon fusion, which can proceed through color-singlet as well as color-octet mechanisms. We identify kinematic regimes where light quark fragmentation dominates, allowing for the extraction of the 3 𝑆$^{[8]}_{1}$ matrix element, as well as regimes where photon gluon fusion dominates, suggesting that the gluon TMD parton distribution function can be probed.

Perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process and SIDIS

In a previous publication [Benić , ], we have computed the perturbative QCD contribution to transverse single spin asymmetries (SSAs) in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) involving the g T ( x ) distribution. In this paper, we first present a more efficient derivation of the asymmetries which is applicable to both transverse and longitudinal SSAs and correct some inconsistencies in our previous calculation. We then adapt the method to compute transverse SSAs in the Drell-Yan process proportional to g T ( x ) and its gluonic counterpart and discuss the crossing symmetry between the results for SIDIS and the Drell-Yan process. Finally, we present numerical results for various asymmetries measurable at the EIC, RHIC, COMPASS, and Fermilab (SpinQuest), including also part of the genuine twist-three corrections to g T ( x ) from a recent global analysis. We find that the asymmetries can reach percent-level magnitude, if the kinematics predominantly probes the large- x (valence) region of the polarized proton, but remain at subpercent levels otherwise. Transverse energy-energy correlators in the color-glass condensate at the electron-ion collider

We investigate the transverse energy-energy correlators (TEEC) in the small- x regime at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Focusing on the back-to-back production of electron-hadron pairs in both e p and e A collisions, we establish a factorization formula given in terms of the hard function, quark distributions, soft functions, and TEEC jet functions, where the gluon saturation effect is incorporated. Numerical results for TEEC in both e p and e A collisions are presented, together with the nuclear modification factor R A . Our analysis reveals that TEEC observables in deep inelastic scattering provide a valuable approach for probing gluon saturation phenomena. Our findings underscore the significance of measuring TEEC at the EIC, emphasizing its efficacy in advancing our understanding of gluon saturation and nuclear modifications in high-energy collisions. Sudakov double logs in single-inclusive hadron production in DIS at small x from the color glass condensate formalism

We investigate the high Q 2 (photon virtuality) limit of single-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small x , using the color glass condensate formalism at next-to-leading order. We focus on the Λ QCD 2 ≪ p h 2 ≪ Q 2 kinematic regime, where p h is the produced hadron transverse momentum, and extract the Sudakov double logarithms. We further argue that compatibility between the color glass condensate calculation and transverse momentum dependent distribution factorization at one-loop order can only be achieved if the small-x evolution is kinematically constrained. Power counting to saturation

We present a description of saturation in small 𝑥 deep inelastic scattering from power counting in a top-down effective theory derived from quantum chromodynamics (QCD). A factorization formula isolates the universal physics of the nucleus at leading power in 𝑥. The onset of saturation is then understood as a breakdown in the expansion in an emergent power counting parameter, which is defined by the matrix element of a gauge invariant operator. We identify a new radiation mode, which enables us to extend previous literature by distinguishing the appearance of the saturation scale from the transition to nonlinear evolution.

Constraints on the U ( 1 ) B − L model from global QCD analysis

We perform the first global QCD analysis of electron-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering and related high-energy data including the beyond the Standard Model U ( 1 ) B − L gauge boson, Z ′ . Contrary to the dark photon case, we find no improvement in the χ 2 relative to the baseline result. The finding allows us to place exclusion limits on the coupling constant of the Z ′ with mass in the range M Z ′ = 2 to 160 GeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Enhancing charge ratio sensitivity to hadronization effects via jet selections on resolved SoftDrop splitting

The study of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at ultrarelativistic energies can be performed in a controlled environment through lepton-hadron deep inelastic scatterings. In such collisions, the high-energy partonic emissions that follow from the ejected hard partons are accurately described by perturbative QCD. However, the lower energy scales at which quarks and gluons experience color confinement, i.e., hadronization mechanism, fall outside the validity regions for perturbative calculations, requiring phenomenological models tuned to data to describe it. As such, hadronization physics cannot be currently derived from first principles alone. Monte Carlo event generators are useful tools to describe these processes as they simulate both the perturbative and the nonperturbative interactions, with model-dependent energy scales that control parton dynamics. This work employs jets—experimental reconstructions of final-state particles likely to have a common partonic origin—to inspect this transition further. Although originally proposed to circumvent hadronization effects, we show that jets can be utilized as probes of nonperturbative phenomena via their substructure. The charge correlation ratio was recently shown to be sensitive to hadronization effects. Our work further improves this sensitivity to nonperturbative scales by introducing a new selection based on the relative placement of the within the clustering tree, defined as the unclustering that resolves the jet’s leading charged particles. QED nuclear medium effects at EIC energies

Here, we present the first calculation of quantum electrodynamics (QED) nuclear medium effects under the experimental conditions of future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) experiments. Our work offers numerical estimates, particularly in the context of inclusive deep inelastic scattering on a $^{208}_{82}$Pb nucleus. While prior studies have predominantly focused on elastic scattering, our investigation extends to the more complex scenarios of inelastic processes within a nuclear medium. Our findings suggest that the cross section corrections due to QED nuclear medium effects could be substantial, reaching or exceeding the level of experimental precision. This work further compares the effects of single rescattering events with those of multiple rescatterings, as particles travel the nuclear volume. We estimate the dominant source of the uncertainties associated with our formalism by varying the scale of the atomic physics where the screening of the electric field of the nucleus happens. This calculation not only contributes to the understanding of QED nuclear medium effects, but also offers a path to a more precise extraction of the process-independent nonperturbative structure of nuclei.

Constraining the Nucleon Size with Relativistic Nuclear Collisions

The notion of the "size" of nucleons and their constituents plays a pivotal role in the current paradigm of the formation and the fluctuations of the quark-gluon plasma produced in high-energy nuclear collision experiments. Here, we report on state-of-the-art hydrodynamic results showing that the correlation between anisotropic flow, $v^{2}_{n}$, and the mean transverse momentum of hadrons, [$p_t$], possesses a unique sensitivity to the nucleon size in off-central heavy-ion collisions. We argue that existing experimental measurements of this observable support a picture where the relevant length scale characterizing the colliding nucleons is of order 0.5 fm or smaller, and we discuss the broad implications of this finding for future global Bayesian analyses aimed at extracting initial state and medium properties from nucleus-nucleus collision data, including $v^{2}_{n}$-[$p_t$] correlations. Determinations of the nucleon size in heavy-ion collisions will provide a solid independent constraint on the initial state of small system collisions, and will establish a deep connection between collective flow data in nucleus-nucleus experiments and data on deep inelastic scattering on protons and nuclei.

Transversity Distributions and Tensor Charges of the Nucleon: Extraction from Dihadron Production and Their Universal Nature

We perform the first global quantum chromodynamics (QCD) analysis of dihadron production for a comprehensive set of data in electron-positron annihilation, semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering, and proton-proton collisions, from which we extract simultaneously the transversity distributions of the nucleon and π + π − dihadron fragmentation functions. We incorporate in our fits known theoretical constraints on transversity, namely, its small- x asymptotic behavior and the Soffer bound. We furthermore show that lattice-QCD results for the tensor charges can be successfully included in the analysis. This resolves the previously reported incompatibility between the tensor charges extracted from dihadron production data and lattice QCD. We also find agreement with results for the transversity and tensor charges obtained from measurements on single-hadron production. Overall, our work demonstrates for the first time the universal nature of all available information for the transversity distributions and the tensor charges of the nucleon. Modification of Quark-Gluon Distributions in Nuclei by Correlated Nucleon Pairs

We extend the QCD Parton Model analysis using a factorized nuclear structure model incorporating individual nucleons and pairs of correlated nucleons. Our analysis of high-energy data from lepton deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, and W and Z boson production simultaneously extracts the universal effective distribution of quarks and gluons inside correlated nucleon pairs, and their nucleus-specific fractions. Such successful extraction of these universal distributions marks a significant advance in our understanding of nuclear structure properties connecting nucleon- and parton-level quantities. New Data-Driven Constraints on the Sign of Gluon Polarization in the Proton

Recently, the possible existence of negative gluon helicity Δ g has been observed to be compatible with existing empirical constraints, including from jet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, and lattice QCD data on polarized gluon Ioffe time distributions. We perform a new global analysis of polarized parton distributions in the proton with new constraints from the high- x region of deep-inelastic scattering (DIS). A dramatic reduction in the quality of the fit for the negative Δ g replicas compared to those with positive Δ g suggests that the negative Δ g solution cannot simultaneously account for high- x polarized DIS data along with lattice and polarized jet data. Exploring the Three-Dimensional Momentum Distribution of Longitudinally Polarized Quarks in the Proton

By analyzing experimental data on semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering off longitudinally polarized targets, we extract the transverse momentum dependence of the quark helicity distribution, i.e., the difference between the three-dimensional motion of quarks with polarization parallel or antiparallel to the longitudinal polarization of the parent hadron. We perform the analysis at next-to-leading and next-to-next-to-leading perturbative accuracy. The quality of the fit is very good for both cases, reaching a χ 2 per number of data points equal to 1.11 and 1.09, respectively. Although the limited number of data points leads to significant uncertainties, the data are consistent with an interpretation in which the helicity distribution is narrower in transverse momentum than the unpolarized distribution.
