Cage Regional Energy Budgets from the GLAS 4TH Order Model

The status and future plans of a study to (1) assess the accuracy of regional energy balance calculations obtained from the 4th-order model, (2) determine the impact of satellite data on the calculations, and (3) determine their utility for ocean energy transport studies are discussed. An equation is presented which models the vertically-integrated, time and areally-averaged total energy content of a region of the atmosphere extending from the surface to the top of the atmosphere. All of the terms of the equation were evaluated using early versions of the GLAS FGGE IIIb analysis, and analysis with satellite data deleted. Results show that the budget is dominated by the surface fluxes, net radiation, and horizontal atmospoheric divergence.

Molecular Static Third-Order Polarizabilities of Carbon-Cage Fullerene and Their Correlation with Three Geometric Properties: Symmetry, Aromaticity, and Size

The static third-order polarizabilities (gamma) of C60, C70, five isomers of C78 and two isomers of C84 were analyzed in terms of three properties, from a geometric point of view: symmetry, aromaticity and size. The polarizability values were based on the finite field approximation using a semiempirical Hamiltonian (AM1) and applied to molecular structures obtained from density functional theory calculations. Symmetry was characterized by the molecular group order. The selection of 6-member rings as aromatic was determined from an analysis of bond lengths. Maximum interatomic distance and surface area were the parameters considered with respect to size. Based on triple linear regression analysis, it was found that the static linear polarizability (alpha) and gamma in these molecules respond differently to geometrical properties: alpha depends almost exclusively on surface area while gamma is affected by a combination of number of aromatic rings, length and group order, in decreasing importance. In the case of alpha, valence electron contributions provide the same information as all-electron estimates. For gamma, the best correlation coefficients are obtained when all-electron estimates are used and when the dependent parameter is ln(gamma) instead of gamma.

Investigation of compressible vortex flow characteristics

The nature of intense air vortices was studied and the factors which determine the intensity and rate of decay of both single and pairs of vortices were investigated. Vortex parameters of axial pressure differential, circulation, outflow rates, separation distance and directions of rotation were varied. Unconfined vortices, generated by a single rotating cage, were intensified by an increasing axial pressure gradient. Breakdown occurred when the axial gradient became negligible. The core radius was a function of the axial gradient. Dual vortices, generated by two counterrotating cages, rotated opposite to the attached cages. With minimum spacing only one vortex was formed which rotated in a direction opposite to the attached cage. When one cage rotated at half the speed of the other cage, one vortex formed at the higher speed cage rotating in the cage direction.

Testing and Comparative Evaluation of Space Shuttle Main Engine Flowmeter Bearings

This paper provides a summary of testing of Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) flowmeter bearings and cage material. These tests were con&cM over a several month period in 2004 at the Marshall Space Flight Center. The test program's primary objective was to compare the performance of bearings using the existing cage material and bearings using a proposed replacement cage material. In order to meet the test objectives for this program, a flowmeter test rig was designed and fabricated to measure both breakaway and running torque for a flowmeter assembly. Other test parameters,,such as motor current and shaft speed, were also recorded and provide a means of comparing bearing performance. The flowmeter and bearings were tested in liquid hydrogen to simulate the flowmeter's operating environment as closely as possible. Based on the results from this testing, the bearings with the existing cage material are equivalent to the bearings with the proposed replacement cage material. No major differences exist between the old and new cage materials. Therefore, the new cage material is a suitable replacement for the existing cage material.

Spherical Congeners of Polyaromatic Compounds Approaching C 20 - and C 60 -Fullerene-Type Structures

A series of three symmetric, hollow spherical, and shape-persistent molecular organic cages analogous to C 20 and C 60 were examined by computational modeling, analyzing structural elements, strain indicators, and physical properties relevant for potential applications. The compounds are covalent aromatic cages based on 1,3,5-substituted benzene nodes linked by paraphenylene or para-pyrenylene-connectors, with diameters varying from 2.3 to 4.2 nm. The apertures in the cage interior are varied by virtue of the cage type (C 20 - or C 60 -type cage) and the linear connectors placed between the C 6 H 3 -units. NBO and MESP analyses indicate the presence of electrophilic and nucleophilic sites in the molecular skeleton. In the cages with the phenylene-connectors, the HOMO−LUMO gaps are close to 4.0 eV. In the cage coated with an enlarged polyaromatic spacer (pyrene-unit), the gap is reduced by approximately 0.4 eV.

Cathode system for electrodeposition of metals on microspheres

The present disclosure relates to an apparatus for electroplating an element. The apparatus may comprise a cathode cage assembly. The cathode cage assembly may include a cage member and at least one electrically conductive wire extending along at least a portion of the cage member. The wire may be arranged to form at least one volume within the cage member for retaining an element within the cage member. The cage member and the wire permit a degree of movement of the element during an electroplating process while retaining the element within the volume.
