Cyclic oxidation behavior of beta+gamma overlay coatings on gamma and gamma+gamma-prime alloys

Detailed experimental studies of the cyclic oxidation behavior of low-pressure plasma sprayed beta+gamma coasting on gamma-phase Ni-Cr-Al alloys have shown the correlation of weight change, oxide type, and Cr and Al concentration-distance profiles as a function of oxidation time. Of special interest was the transition to breakway oxidation due to the loss of the Al flux to the oxide and the failure of the coated alloy to form an Al2O3-rich oxide scale. The experimental results on beta+gamma/gamma coating systems were used as the basis of a numerical model (ternary, semi-infinite, finite-difference analysis) which accurately predicted changes in Cr and Al concentration-distance profiles. The model was used to study parameters critical to enhancing the life of coatings which fail by a combination of Al loss in forming the oxide scale and Al loss via interdiffusion with the substrate alloy. Comparisons of beta+gamma/gamma coating behavior are made to the oxidation of coated gamma+gamma-prime substrates, both ternary Ni-Cr-Al alloys and Mar-M 247-type alloys.

Prospecting for planets in circumstellar dust - Sifting the evidence from Beta Pictoris

IRAS and near-IR coronographic data for the A5V star Beta Pic are analyzed for evidence of planetary formation. The light scattered from the central star in the system is integrated along the distance to the star to determine the disk magnitude at various distances from the star. A modified gamma distribution is applied to evaluate the scattering coefficient to test a hypothesis that the inner 30 AU of the disk has been swept out by planets. The scattering from the region around Beta Pic is compared with scattering around other A5V stars. Finally, the IR data at 0.89 micron is compared with scattering at the coronograph wavelengths. No evidence is found to support the hypothesis of clearing in the inner disk, although large particle densities can be found very close to Beta Pic. The study illustrates the effectiveness of using scattered light and IR data to discover and characterize matter distributions circumstellar disks.

Improved beta-SiC heteroepitaxial films using off-axis Si substrates

All beta-SiC films grown using on-axis (001) Si substrates that have been examined with transmission electron microscopy exhibit a high density of interfacial twins, stacking faults, and antiphase disorder. The antiphase boundaries can be decorated by chemical etching, sputter etching, wet oxidation, and beta-SiC growth in the presence of diborane. All traces of antiphase disorder are eliminated when the heteroepitaxial growth is carried out on vicinal (001) Si substrates that are tilted 2 deg about a 110-line axis. In addition, growth on the off-axis Si produces beta-SiC films that are significantly smoother than on-axis films. The density of stacking faults is apparently unaffected by growth on the off-axis substrates.

Far-ultraviolet observations of the Delta-Scuti variable Beta Cassiopeiae

FUV (115-200-nm) observations of Beta Cas, obtained at resolutions 5 and 0.15 A by the IUE during September 1984, are reported and analyzed. The data are presented graphically and compared with results for Procyon, a sharp-lined F star similar in temperature to Beta Cas. A sharp factor-of-two increase in H I Ly-alpha flux on a time scale comparable to its Delta Sct pulsation period was observed, but the data were insufficient to determine whether the increase was flarelike or pulsation-related. The outer edges of the Beta Cas emission are shown to be significantly wider than those of Procyon.

Meso-beta scale simulations of convective cloud systems over Florida utilizing synthetic data derived from GOES satellite imagery

An attempt is made to improve the simulation of the meso-alpha and meso-beta scales' precipitation distribution over the Florida peninsula during the warm season through improvement of the initialization of beta scale convective cloud systems, using GOES IR and visible satellite imagery. These data can be used to define the location and spatial extent of meso-beta scale cloud systems at a specified time. Attention is presently given to the results of the first phase of this study, in which only moisture information was synthesized from the satellite imagery.

500-3200 A observations of the interacting binary stars V356 Sgr and Beta Lyr

Results on VG356 Sgr and Beta Lyr are presented from the Voyager UV spectrometers and the IUE. The observations of V356 Sgr cover two eclipses in which the total strength of the UV emission lines were invariant. At wavelengths shorter than 1600 A, an uneclipsed UV continuum was found. A model for the origin of the circumstellar matter in V356 Sgr is given. The UV observations of Beta Lyr show a strong far-UV continuum down to 912 A. The spectral shape fo the far-UV continuum closely resembles that of a UX Uma-type cataclysmic variable. Analysis of the Beta Lyr data indicates that the central object is small, with a radius on the order of 1 solar radius or less.

HgI2 low energy beta particle detector

An HgI2 device structure was designed and tested which allows HgI2 to be used to make low-energy beta-particle detectors. The devices detected tritium beta particles with an efficiency of about 25 percent. A protective encapsulant has been developed which should protect the devices for up to 20 years and will attenuate only a small fraction of the beta particles. It is noted that the devices hold significant promise to provide a practical alternative to liquid scintillation counters and gas flow-through proportional counters.

Beta measurements

The second year's results of the BETA project research are presented. The program is divided into two areas, aerosol modification and climatology in the trade wind region and the climatology of BETA (CO2) on remote mountain top locations. Limited data is available on the aerosol climatology of the marine free troposphere (MFT) in the trade wind region. In order to study the effects of cumulus convection on the MFT values of BETA, a cloud model was developed to simulate the evolution of a typical Pacific trade wind cumulus cloud. The stages involved in this development are outlined. The assembly of the major optical components of the lidar was made. Tests were run of the spectral bandwidth of the Synrad laser when a portion of the beam is mixed with a component which has traveled 450 meters corresponding to a delay of 1.5 microsecs. The bandwidth of the beat signal was measured to be 3 KHz. The data processing system based on a parallel processing filter bank analyzer using true time squaring detectors at each filter was completed.

Mechanism of the gamma-beta phase transformation of Mg2SiO4 at high temperature and pressure

The results of experiments on the phase transformation of Mg2SiO4 olivine at 15 GPa pressure in a multianvil cell are reported. At this pressure and a temperature of 900 C, early formed metastable gamma-spinel transforms partially to the beta-phase. The observed microstructures, which are similar to those in shocked meteorites, show that the gamma-to-beta transformation can occur either by diffusion-controlled growth or by a martensitic mechanism, depending on how far the pressure-temperature conditions deviate from their values at phase equilibrium. The results suggest that the diffusion-controlled mechanism is most likely to operate at the beta/gamma phase boundary in the mantle, but martensitic beta-to-gamma transformation might occur in subduction zones and could reduce the shear strength of the subducting slab.

A divided meso-beta scale convectively explicit simulation

A convective event over the Gulf of Mexico is used to address the question of how well nonhydrostratic convectively explicit models initialized by imposing a 'bubble', typically a temperature perturbation, on a horizontally homogeneous stratification background field, respond to usually subtle variations on meso-beta scale thermodynamic structure. Whether a meso-beta scale convective precipitation pattern can be produced numerically by performing a group of convectively explicit simulations is studied. Storm-scale low-level forcing is found to be important for producing desired convective precipitation patterns. The additional numerical approaches that must be incorporated to understand and forecast meso-beta scale weather events are considered.

Mass outflow in the nearby proto-planetary system, Beta Pictoris

Previous spectral studies of circumstallar dust around the nearby, candidate proto-planetary system, Beta Pictoris, has detected only infalling gas. The lack of detectable mass outflow has been critical in the interpretation of the origin of the circumstellar gas and in our understanding of the evolutionary status of the Beta Pictoris system. IUE high-dispersion spectra are presented which show, in addition to infall, the presence of mass outflow, with a maximum observed outflow velocity of -60 km/s, and a corresponding instantaneous outflow rate of 1.1 x 10 to the -14th solar mass/yr, or 1.1 x 10 to the -11th Jupiter mass/yr. This mass outflow rate and terminal velocity are comparable to the magnitudes of mass infall rates and terminal velocities observed from late 1986 through early 1988. The implications of these observations on our understanding of the mechanisms producing infall from the surrounding circumstellar disk are discussed, as are the implications for our understanding of the evolutionary status of the Beta Pic system.

Constitution of pseudobinary hypoeutectic beta-NiAl + alpha-V alloys

The formation of pseudobinary eutectics between NiAl (beta) and V (alpha) at high temperatures was investigated as a possible way of improving the ductility and toughness of the alloy. It is found that a pseudobinary eutectic, characterized by a large beta+alpha field, is formed in the Ni-Al-V ternary system below about 1370 C. The high-temperature solubility of V in beta is about 14 percent, decreasing markedly with decreasing temperature and increasing Al content above 50 at. pct Al. The pseudobinary hypoeutectic exibits crack resistance under indentation loading.

Overview of the Beta II Two-Stage-To-Orbit vehicle design

A study of a near-term, low risk two-stage-to-orbit (TSTO) vehicle was undertaken. The goal of the study was to assess a fully reusable TSTO vehicle with horizontal takeoff and landing capability that could deliver 10,000 pounds to a 120 nm polar orbit. The configuration analysis was based on the Beta vehicle design. A cooperative study was performed to redesign and refine the Beta concept to meet the mission requirements. The vehicle resulting from this study was named Beta II. It has an all-airbreathing first stage and a staging Mach number of 6.5. The second stage is a conventional wing-body configuration with a single SSME.

Oxidation characteristics of Beta-21S in air in the temperature range 600 to 800 C

The metastable beta-Ti alloy Beta-21S, Ti-15Mo-2.7Nb-3Al-0.2Si (weight percent), has been proposed as a candidate for use in metal matrix composites in future hypersonic vehicles. The present study investigated the oxidation behavior of Beta-21S over the temperature range 600 C to 800 C. Oxidation weight gain was evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis. Oxidized specimens were evaluated using x ray diffraction techniques, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x ray analysis, and electron microprobe analysis to identify oxidation products and evaluate oxidation damage to the alloy.

Mechanical properties of coated titanium Beta-21S after exposure to air at 700 and 800 C

Mechanical properties of Beta-21S (Ti-15Mo-3Al-2.7Nb-0.2Si, wt percent) with glass, aluminide, and glass-on-aluminide coatings less than 3-micron thick were studied. Coatings were deposited by sol-gel processing or electron-beam evaporation onto 4.5-mil (113-micron) thick Beta-21S sheet from which, after oxidizing in air at 700 or 800 C, tensile test specimens were machined. Plastic elongation was the most severely degraded of the tensile properties; the glass-on-aluminide coatings were the most effective in preventing degradation. It was found that oxygen trapping by forming oxides in the coating, and reactions between the coatings and the Beta-21S alloy played significant roles.

Cold equation of state in a strong magnetic field - Effects of inverse beta-decay

The influence of a high magnetic field (B is greater than 10 exp 12 G) on the degenerate matter equation of state appropriate to a neutron star is studied. The regime dominated by relativistic electrons up to the neutron drip density is highlighted. The equilibrium matter composition and equation of state, allowing for inverse beta-decay. Two different equilibrium models are determined: an ideal neutron-proton-electron (npe) gas and the more realistic model of Baym, Pethick, and Sutherland (1971) consisting of a Coulomb lattice of heavy nuclei embedded in an electron gas. For a sufficiently high field strength, the magnetic field has an appreciable effect, changing the adiabatic index of the matter and the nuclear transition densities. The influence of a strong field on some simple nonequilibrium processes, including beta-decay and inverse beta-decay (electron capture) is also considered. The effects produced by the magnetic field are mainly due to the changes in the transverse electron quantum orbits and the allowed electron phase space induced by the field.

Geology and tectonics of Beta Regio, Guinevere Planitia, Sedna Planitia, and Western Eistla Regio, Venus - Results from Arecibo image data

The geology of a portion of the equatorial region of Venus (1 deg S to 45 deg N and from 270 deg eastward to 30 deg) is assessed on the basis of new radar images obtained from the Arecibo Observatory. Nine geologic units are mapped on the basis of their radar characteristics, and their distribution and correspondences with topography are examined. Plains are the most abundant unit, comprising 80 percent of the area imaged, and are divided into bright, dark, and mottled. Mottled plains contain abundant lava flows and domes, suggesting that volcanism forming planes is a significant process in the equatorial region of Venus. Tesserae are found primarily on Beta Regio and its eastern flank and are interpreted to be locally stratigraphically older units, predating episodes of faulting and plains formation. On the basis of spatial and temporal relationships between geologic units, the highlands of Beta Regio and Western Eistla Regio are interpreted to have formed in association with areas of mantle upwelling which uplift plains, cause rifting, and, in the case of Beta Regio, disrupt a large region of tesserae.

Simultaneous high-P, high-T X ray diffraction study of beta-(Mg,Fe)2SiO4 to 26 GPa and 900 K

Attention is given to the lattice parameters of beta phase (Mg(0.84)Fe(0.16))2SiO4 determined by X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation under simultaneous high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The experiments were conducted up to a pressure of 26 GPa and a temperature of 900 K. High pressures were generated in a Mao-Bell type diamond anvil cell using neon gas as a pressure medium. The sample was heated with an external Ni80Cr20 wire heater. Gold was used as an internal high-pressure calibrant at high temperature. The experimental data indicated the anisotropic behavior of the beta phase at high pressure and temperature, i.e., the c axis is about 35-percent more expansible and about 25-percent more compressible than the a and b axes. A value of 5.1 +/-0.8 was found for the Anderson-Grueneisen parameter. The derived thermodynamic parameters for the beta phase are summarized.
