Accurate Binding Energies for Lithium Polysulfides and Assessment of Density Functionals for Lithium–Sulfur Battery Research

Lithium–sulfur batteries have high theoretical energy density, but a better knowledge of their intimate structural details will be helpful in improving their conductivity and long-term cycling behavior. In order to identify the stationary configurations of lithium polysulfides (Li 2 S n , 2 ≤ n ≤ 8) formed in the charging and discharging processes of the lithium–sulfur batteries, ab initio molecular dynamics was employed to sample the configuration space of Li 2 S n , followed by optimization of structures by CCSD(T)-F12b/aug-cc-pVDZ. Here, using the optimized stationary points, we have created the LiSAE38 benchmark database of atomization energies (AEs) of 38 lithium polysulfide isomers by using the higher-level WMS and W3X-L methods. In addition, the performances of 39 density functionals have been assessed against the benchmark AEs and the relative stabilities of Li 2 S n isomers. On the basis of the assessments with the def2-QZVP basis set, the PW6B95, B97-1, B3LYP-D3, TPSS, and DSD-PBEP86 density functionals are the most accurate for the AEs, whereas the mPW2-PLYP-D, DSD-PBEP86, PW6B95, HSE06, and PBEQIDH functionals are most accurate for the relative energies. Local functionals are of special interest because of their lower cost (faster timings in terms of computer resources) for large systems; among the tested local functionals, MN15-L and revM06-L are the most accurate for the calculations of relative stabilities.

Design, Synthesis, and Characterization of Polymer Precursors to Li x PON and Li x SiPON Glasses: Materials That Enable All-Solid-State Batteries (ASBs)

LiPON-like glasses that form lithium dendrite impenetrable interfaces between lithium battery components are enabling materials that may replace liquid electrolytes permitting production of all-solid-state batteries (ASBs). Unfortunately, to date, such materials are introduced only via gas-phase deposition. Furthermore, we demonstrate the design and synthesis of easily scaled, lowtemperature, low-cost, solution-processable inorganic polymers containing LiPON/LiSiPON elements. OPCl 3 and hexachlorophosphazene [Cl 2 P=N] 3 provide starting points for elaboration using MNH 2 (M = Li/Na) or (Me 3 Si)NH followed by reaction with controlled amounts of LiNH 2 to produce oligomers/polymers with molecular weights (MWs) ≈1–2 kDa characterized by multinuclear NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ ionization (MALDI)-time-of-flight (ToF) offering stabilities to 150–200 °C and ceramic yields (800 °C) of 50–60%. 7 Li NMR suggests that precursor-bound Li + dissociates easily, beneficial for electrochemical applications. XPS shows higher N/P ratios (1–3) than via gas-phase methods (<1) correlating N/P ratios, 7 Li shifts, and Li + conductivities. Li 2 SiPHN offers the highest ambient conductivity of 3 × 10 –1 mS cm –1 at 400 °C/2 h/N 2 .

Tailoring the Surface of Silicon Nanoparticles for Enhanced Chemical and Electrochemical Stability for Li-Ion Batteries

Organic monolayers of epoxy-containing oligo(ethylene oxide)s were grafted to the surface of silicon nanoparticles via a hydrosilylation reaction. The surface functional groups suppressed the chemical and electrochemical reactivity of the as-grown and lithiated silicon nanoparticles with high material utilization. A robust Si/electrolyte interphase was formed with the participation of the grafted organic groups with facilitated Li+ transfer and was further enforced by electrode integrity via the epoxy/poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) binder reaction. The improved cycling stability and post-test analysis indicate that surface functionalization on the Si particle level is a feasible approach to enabling a Si anode in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries.

Stress- and interface-compatible red phosphorus anode for high-energy and durable sodium-ion batteries

Sodium-ion battery is a promising candidate for energy storage application, but the absence of high-capacity and low-cost anode materials significantly limit their practical specific energy and cost. Red phosphorus (RP) possesses a high theoretical specific capacity but suffers from large volume change, low electronic conductivity and unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, a hierarchical micro/nanostructured antimony-doped RP/carbon anode was developed, which demonstrate extraordinary electrochemical performance with high initial Coulombic efficiency of ~90%, high areal (~1.7 mAh cm-2) capacity together with good cycle stability and rate capability. Combined experimental and computational studies consistently revealed that such a unique structural design can dramatically accommodate the mechanical stress and moreover effectively restrain the undesired decomposition of electrolyte solvents regardless of electrolytes formulation, resulting in superior structural integrity and thin/robust SEI formation during cycling. The present finding has offered an alternative strategy for stress management and interface engineering on high-capacity alloying-based anode materials.

A Superior Carbonate Electrolyte for Stable Cycling Li Metal Batteries Using High Ni Cathode

Li metal batteries pairing Li metal anode with high-nickel layer structured oxide cathode are a promising energy storage technology to achieve high energy density. To obtain long cycling life for Li metal batteries, the electrolyte plays a pivotal role in stabilizing both the Li metal anode and the high-nickel cathode upon electrochemical cycling. Herein, we report a carbonate electrolyte that enables a Li||LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 pouch cell to achieve a high gravimetric energy density of 366 Wh/kg and unprecedented cycling stability with 80% capacity retention after 335 cycles. Here, the 19 F quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and interface characterization demonstrate that FEC and LiDFOB can reduce the consumption rate of each other and the electrolyte, form a robust LiF-rich SEI on Li metal anode, and improve the microstructure integrity of the high-nickel cathode.

Flexible Boundary Design for a Chattanooga Microgrid Powered by Landfill Solar Photovoltaic and Battery Storage

Landfill based microgrids powered by renewable energy aid reliability and resiliency while promoting environmental and energy justice. This paper aims to design a flexible boundary algorithm for a proposed Chattanooga landfill microgrid with the ability to shrink or expand its boundaries based on the available power from the solar PV and battery storage. This helps to improve resiliency unlike the conventional fixed boundary microgrids. The flexible boundary algorithm determines the combination and switching status of the intellirupter ® which changes the microgrid boundaries to achieve power balance by dropping or energizing specific load sections. Finally, the microgrid with flexible boundary was simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and performed satisfactorily when tested under various scenarios.

Control and Simulation of a Grid-Forming Inverter for Hybrid PV-Battery Plants in Power System Black Start

Power system restoration is an important part of system planning. Power utilities are required to maintain black start capable generators that can energize the transmission system and provide cranking power to non-blackstart capable generators. Traditionally, hydro and diesel units are used as black start capable generators. With the increased penetration of bulk size solar farms, inverter based generation can play an important role in faster and parallel black start thus ensuring system can be brought back into service without the conventional delays that can be expected with limited black start generators. Inverter-based photovoltaic (PV) power plants have advantages that are suitable for black start. This paper proposes the modeling, control, and simulation of a grid-forming inverter-based PV-battery power plant that can be used as a black start unit. The inverter control includes both primary and secondary control loops to imitate the control of a conventional synchronous machine. The proposed approach is verified using a test system modified from the IEEE 9-bus system in the time-domain electromagnetic transient simulation tool PSCAD. The simulation results shows voltage and frequency stability during a multi-step black-start and network energization process.

Eco Look-Ahead Control of Battery Electric Vehicles and Roadway Grade Effects

Roadway grade is one of the major variables that affects a vehicle’s energy consumption. This study demonstrates the potential benefits of an eco look-ahead control for battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The proposed eco look-ahead controller was developed for the lead vehicle of a platoon of BEVs. The eco look-ahead control predicts the optimum speed and acceleration levels within a preset speed window to minimize energy consumption considering the instantaneous energy used and the regenerated energy. The developed BEV eco look-ahead control system integrates a BEV energy consumption model and a powertrain model to save fuel while maintaining vehicle speed within a user-specified window. In addition, the study demonstrates the effects of roadway grade on BEV energy consumption. The results show that the energy consumption of BEVs are significantly reduced on downhill roads compared with internal combustion engine vehicles owing to regenerative braking. Specifically, testing showed that BEVs could even produce extra energy on downhill roads. The study also tested the eco look-ahead control on an 18-km section of I-81 and found that the system produced savings of 8.51% and 26.88% in the uphill and downhill directions, respectively. This study demonstrated that regenerative energy in BEVs is a critical factor in energy efficiency and the developed eco look-ahead control significantly improved the energy efficiency for BEVs.
