Component Identification of Solid Biomass Fuels Using Reflected Light Microscopy: Interlaboratory Study 2

As nations transition toward sustainable energy systems, biomass has become a vital component of global energy portfolios. Derived from organic materials such as wood, agricultural residues, forestry byproducts, and organic waste, biomass is a renewable energy source with significant environmental and economic benefits. Responsible biomass energy production can improve waste management, reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, and mitigate environmental pollution. However, as the diversity of biomass-derived fuels increases, robust quality assessment methods are essential to ensure their efficiency, safety, and minimal environmental impact. Reflected light microscopy (RLM) is one such technique with the potential to complement conventional physico-chemical analyses by enabling a rapid identification of material constituents and impurities. To refine this methodology and evaluate the reproducibility of solid biomass component identification using RLM, an interlaboratory study (ILS) was conducted. The study involved the recognition of 58 components across 45 photomicrographs, with the participation of 65 scientists and students from 25 countries. The participants faced high difficulty identifying some of the marked components, and as a result, the percentage of correct answers ranged from 19.0 % to 98.3 %, with an average correct identification rate of 62.7 %. The most challenging aspects of the identification process included distinguishing between woody and non-woody (agro) biomass, accurately identifying petroleum-derived materials, and differentiating agro biomass from inorganic matter. The results suggest that while RLM is an important tool for characterizing solid biomass, further development of methodology guidelines and training are necessary to enhance its effectiveness. Future research should prioritize preparing detailed, image-rich, microscopic morphological descriptions of biomass fuel components, which could improve the accuracy and reliability of using RLM in biomass fuel characterization.

The current state of the industrial energy assessment and its impacts on the manufacturing industry

Energy-intensive manufacturing is the greatest contributor to the U.S. industrial energy consumption today. Globally, manufacturing facilities are being directed to reduce their energy consumption to prepare for a sustainable future. Industrial energy assessment plays a crucial role in helping facilities meet their energy efficiency goals by encouraging the implementation of cost-effective, energy-saving recommendations to the existing equipment and processes. Across the world, programs such as the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) sponsored Industrial Assessment Centers (IACs) (operational across several states in the U.S. for over four decades), are transforming the future of industrial energy consumption by offering free industrial energy assessments to qualifying facilities. In this review paper, the industrial energy assessment approach and practices are comprehensively reviewed with focus on popular recommendations, procedures, and the current practices of the industrial energy assessment program. Specifically, opportunities for improvement in the most energy-intensive manufacturing processes are examined, concentrating on the energy savings and other non-energy benefits of each of these measures, such as cost savings and emissions reduction. Furthermore, this paper also reviews how these energy-saving opportunities are procedurally evaluated and how factors, such as level and cost of assessments, and assessment metrics, are currently defining industrial energy assessment. In final considerations, existing research on energy management, decarbonization through electrification, and renewable energy in industry is reviewed and discussed, and how these advancements will shape the future of industrial energy assessment is addressed through forward-looking lenses.

Community Geothermal: Energy, Cost, and Carbon Modeling for District Design - Ann Arbor, MI

This data includes results on an analysis of existing and projected energy, cost, and carbon for the City of Ann Arbor - District Geothermal Design and Deployment to Equitably Decarbonize Low Income Neighborhoods in Ann Arbor project. The scope of the project includes designing and implementing a geothermal district heating and cooling system that reduces thermal heating and cooling load by 75% and greenhouse gas emissions by 40% in the project area (262 households, 6 commercial buildings). The existing neighborhood was modeled using Design Builder, an EnergyPlus software, to understand the current energy load. The energy model was then flipped to reflect the designed district geothermal heating and cooling system to project the effect on energy, carbon, and cost. This dataset includes the analysis files utilized and created for this study. There are 3 categories of data: 1) existing/benchmarking, 2) energy modeling, and 3) post processed calculations. This follows the methodology and process of the project team, which is fully explained in file 00_Technical Economic Environmental Assessment. All uses of data are referenced throughout this assessment to their respective files included below.

Development and Validation of Algorithms That Analyze Communicating Thermostat Data to Identify Enclosure Retrofit Opportunities

Annual energy savings of up to $\$ 4$ to $\$ 5$ billion could be achieved nationwide through basic insulation and heating system retrofits of existing homes. However, current utility energy efficiency programs are costly and challenging to scale. Customer acquisition occurs primarily through energy bill mailers, mass media, and online advertising that lack specificity about home-specific retrofit opportunities, expected energy savings, and cost-effectiveness. Specific retrofit opportunities are identified via on-site home energy assessments (HEAs) that are inconvenient to homeowners, expensive, and of variable accuracy. We developed computational algorithms that automatically analyze communicating thermostat (CT) heating data that could be used to increase the customer uptake of insulation and air sealing energy conservation measures (ECMs) by identifying homes with the most significant retrofit opportunities, estimating post-retrofit energy savings, and formulating home-specific outreach. The algorithms are based on an extended second-order grey-box model that characterizes a building’s thermal response using lumped elements, coupled with an empirical model of infiltration that accounts for both wind and stack effects. The basic parameters of the model correspond to actual physical parameters of the home, i.e., the home’s overall R-value of and the building envelope ACH50. Unlike the conventional approach, which estimates model parameters based on the best fit to the observed time-dependent room temperature, our approach derives correlations between the daily heating system runtime and temperature difference (indoor-outdoor) that are more robust to data quality issues in real-world applications. We also used HEA data for algorithm development and validation. With the help of our utility partners, Eversource and National Grid, we obtained data sets for hundreds of Massachusetts homes. For each home, these data sets included three sets of information anonymized by the utility: (1) CT data (HVAC runtime, room temperature, and, for some vendors, outdoor temperature and wind speed) collected by the CT vendor (one of three) over a heating season, (2) HEA report performed by the HEA vendor (same vendor for all homes), (3) Monthly utility gas bills coincident with the CT data (3 to 24 per home, depending on availability). For some homes, we also obtained blower-door test results. Initially, we applied the algorithms developed to homes with a single CT and then extended them to homes with two CTs by using an equivalent home approach. Finally, we developed algorithms for prediction of energy savings and a methodology of comparing our predictions with those generated by HEAs. The main technical results indicate that we can reliably identify homes with insulation and/or air sealing retrofit opportunities and provide accurate savings predictions. Our hypothesis is that the algorithms could be applied to utility energy efficiency programs to identify homes that could realize significant energy savings from insulation and/or air sealing retrofits. This information could then be used to reach out to those homes with highly customized outreach, thereby delivering increased program energy savings and cost-effectiveness. This would: Significantly increase the uptake rate of on-site HEAs, and Significantly increase the fraction of HEAs resulting in ECM implementation. To test these hypotheses, we designed and conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT). The RCT results suggest that personal messaging leads to a two- to five-fold increase in the HEA uptake rate.
