Overview of magnetic bearing control and linearization approaches for annular magnetically suspended devices

An overview of magnetic bearing control and linearization approaches which have been considered for annular magnetically suspended devices is presented. These devices include the Annular Momentum Control Device and the Annular Suspension and Pointing System. Two approaches were investigated for controlling the magnetic actuator. One approach involves controlling the upper and lower electromagnets differentially about a bias flux. The bias flux can either be supplied by permanent magnets in the magnetic circuit or by bias currents. In the other approach, either the upper electromagnet or the lower electromagnet is controlled depending on the direction of force required. One advantage of the bias flux is that for small gap perturbations about a fixed operating point, the force-current characteristic is linear. Linearization approaches investigated for individual element control include an analog solution of the nonlinear electromagnet force equation and a microprocessor-based table lookup method.

A solution adaptive grid procedure for an upwind parabolized flow solver

A solution adaptive grid procedure based on an error equi-distribution scheme is developed and applied to a Parabolized Navier-Stokes solver. An improved method for selecting weighting functions is introduced which involves normalizing a combination of flowfield gradients and curvature of a number of dependent variables and then selecting the largest at each point. The scheme re-distributes grid points line-by-line, with grid point motion controlled by forces analogous to tensional and torsional spring forces with the spring constants set equal to the weighting functions. Torsional terms are functions of the grid point positions along neighboring grid lines and provide grid smoothness and stability. A grid-fitting scheme is introduced for external flows in which the number of grid points in the freestream are reduced to a minimum. Results for several problems are presented to demonstrate the improvements obtainable with the solution adaptive grid procedure.

Reduced-Wiring Tactile Sensor

Proposed tactile sensor on robot finger puts out multiplexed analog signals transmitted to control computer on fewer wires than needed to transmit equivalent digital signals. Analog output represents data on contact area of object being gripped, on position of object, and on direction and rate of slippage if any. Consists of chains of normally open switches and resistors on surface of finger. Each resistance double preceding resistance in each chain. Constant-current sources supply power to chains.

A real time dynamic data acquisition and processing system for velocity, density, and total temperature fluctuation measurements

The real time Dynamic Data Acquisition and Processing System (DDAPS) is described which provides the capability for the simultaneous measurement of velocity, density, and total temperature fluctuations. The system of hardware and software is described in context of the wind tunnel environment. The DDAPS replaces both a recording mechanism and a separate data processing system. DDAPS receives input from hot wire anemometers. Amplifiers and filters condition the signals with computer controlled modules. The analog signals are simultaneously digitized and digitally recorded on disk. Automatic acquisition collects necessary calibration and environment data. Hot wire sensitivities are generated and applied to the hot wire data to compute fluctuations. The presentation of the raw and processed data is accomplished on demand. The interface to DDAPS is described along with the internal mechanisms of DDAPS. A summary of operations relevant to the use of the DDAPS is also provided.

Analog synthesized fast-variable linear load

A several kilowatt power level, fast-variable linear resistor was synthesized by using analog components to control the conductance of power MOSFETs. Risetimes observed have been as short as 500 ns with respect to the control signal and 1 to 2 microseconds with respect to the power source voltage. A variant configuration of this load that dissipates a constant power set by a control signal is indicated. Replacement of the MOSFETs by static induction transistors (SITs) to increase power handling, speed and radiation hardness is discussed.

Space marching calculations about hypersonic configurations using a solution-adaptive mesh algorithm

A solution-adaptive marching algorithm is developed and applied to a three-dimensional parabolized Navier-Stokes equation solver. The resulting algorithm obtains accurate solutions by using a spatial-marching/adaptive grid procedure. The adaptation step redistributes grid points line by line in both crossflow directions, with grid point motion controlled by forces analogous to tensional and torsional spring forces with the tensional force proportional to the error measure or weighting functions. The solution-adaptive marching procedure is applied to the hypersonic flow about two generic aircraft configurations. The first of these is an all-body-type geometry with elliptical cross sections and is studied at angles of attack of 0.5, and 15 deg. The second geometry is a generic blended-wing-body design. Results are presented that demonstrate the improvements in flowfield resolution obtainable with the solution-adaptive marching procedure over conventional fixed grid techniques. Computed pitot pressure profiles obtained using the solution-adaptive algorithm show improved agreement with experimental data compared to predictions obtained using a fixed grid.

Digital Baseband Architecture For Transponder

Proposed advanced transponder for long-distance radio communication system with turnaround ranging contains carrier-signal-tracking loop including baseband digital "front end." For reduced cost, transponder includes analog intermediate-frequency (IF) section and analog automatic gain control (AGC) loop at first of two IF mixers. However, second IF mixer redesigned to ease digitization of baseband functions. To conserve power and provide for simpler and smaller transponder hardware, baseband digital signal-processing circuits designed to implement undersampling scheme. Furthermore, sampling scheme and sampling frequency chosen so redesign involves minimum modification of command-detector unit (CDU).

L-Band Transmit/Receive Module for Phase-Stable Array Antennas

Interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) has been shown to provide very sensitive measurements of surface deformation and displacement on the order of 1 cm. Future systematic measurements of surface deformation will require this capability over very large areas (300 km) from space. To achieve these required accuracies, these spaceborne sensors must exhibit low temporal decorrelation and be temporally stable systems. An L-band (24-cmwavelength) InSAR instrument using an electronically steerable radar antenna is suited to meet these needs. In order to achieve the 1-cm displacement accuracy, the phased array antenna requires phase-stable transmit/receive (T/R) modules. The T/R module operates at L-band (1.24 GHz) and has less than 1- deg absolute phase stability and less than 0.1-dB absolute amplitude stability over temperature. The T/R module is also high power (30 W) and power efficient (60-percent overall efficiency). The design is currently implemented using discrete components and surface mount technology. The basic T/R module architecture is augmented with a calibration loop to compensate for temperature variations, component variations, and path loss variations as a function of beam settings. The calibration circuit consists of an amplitude and phase detector, and other control circuitry, to compare the measured gain and phase to a reference signal and uses this signal to control a precision analog phase shifter and analog attenuator. An architecture was developed to allow for the module to be bidirectional, to operate in both transmit and receive mode. The architecture also includes a power detector used to maintain a transmitter power output constant within 0.1 dB. The use of a simple, stable, low-cost, and high-accuracy gain and phase detector made by Analog Devices (AD8302), combined with a very-high efficiency T/R module, is novel. While a self-calibrating T/R module capability has been sought for years, a practical and cost-effective solution has never been demonstrated. By adding the calibration loop to an existing high-efficiency T/R module, there is a demonstrated order-of-magnitude improvement in the amplitude and phase stability.

Fingerprinted circuits and methods of making and identifying the same

A circuit having a fingerprint for identification of a particular instantiation of the circuit is disclosed. The circuit may include a plurality of digital circuits or gates. Each of the digital circuits or gates is responsive to a configuration voltage applied to its analog input for controlling whether or not the digital circuit or gate performs its intended digital function and each of the digital circuits or gates transitioning between its functional state and its at least one other state when the configuration voltage equals a boundary voltage. The boundary voltage varies between different instantiations of the circuit for a majority of the digital circuits or gates and these differing boundary voltages serving to identify (or fingerprint) different instantiations of the same circuit.

Employing Automated Experimental Evolution to Understand Survival Strategies of Lab-Grown Extremophiles

Experimental evolution (EE) exposes microbes to intentional stressors to improve resistance through artificial mutation. The resulting changes to metabolic pathways, protein structure, and genetic sequences, along with traditional genetic engineering tools, to can help understand the mechanisms of improved tolerance. An automated experimental set-up -- the Automated Adaptive Directed Evolution Chamber (AADEC) -- with minimal scope for human interference was developed at NASA Ames. A second- generation device integrating more real-time biochemical sensors has been developed recently. Added sensors include pH for indicating metabolic products, oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) for indicating available/consumed metabolic energy, dissolved oxygen (DO) for indicating aerobic/anaerobic growth cycles, and electrical conductivity (EC) as an additional indicator of metabolic products. With four additional sensors, the system is biochemically more informative in real-time. More importantly, each sensor parameter can be used as a selection pressure, individually or in combination with others, to artificially create and control inhospitable environments analogous to extremophile habitats for microbial growth in the lab. Potential stressors to be added in the future include thermal, reactive oxygen species, metal-ion concentrations, and varying nutrient availability.

Three-dimensional laser velocimeter simultaneity detector

A three-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter has laser optics for a first channel positioned to create a probe volume in space, and laser optics and for second and third channels, respectively, positioned to create entirely overlapping probe volumes in space. The probe volumes and overlap partially in space. The photodetector is positioned to receive light scattered by a particle present in the probe volume, while photodetectors and are positioned to receive light scattered by a particle present in the probe volume. The photodetector for the first channel is directly connected to provide a first channel analog signal to frequency measuring circuits. The first channel is therefore a primary channel for the system. Photodetectors and are respectively connected through a second channel analog signal attenuator to frequency measuring circuits and through a third channel analog signal attenuator to frequency measuring circuits. The second and third channels are secondary channels, with the second and third channels analog signal attenuators and controlled by the first channel measurement burst signal on line. The second and third channels analog signal attenuators and attenuate the second and third channels analog signals only when the measurement burst signal is false.

An analog study of a shock-position diffuser control on a supersonic turbojet engine

Shock position was assumed to be controlled by air bleed through a diffuser-exit bypass door operated by a second-order servomotor. Pressure disturbance resulting from changes in bypass-door position had whereas a disturbance in engine speed had a large effect on diffuser pressure and could impose severe requirements on diffuser control response. The controlled diffuser response improved with faster servomotor response and smaller diffuser dead time and lag. The effect of diffuser dead time on diffuser response was greater than the effect of diffuser lag.
