ARIES team achieves major milestone in support of nonproliferation

The Advanced Recovery and Integrated Extraction System (ARIES) Program is a great example of LANL’s Weapons and Global Security programs working together to achieve important nuclear security mission goals. Executed at PF-4, a facility better known for its pit production mission, the ARIES Program is helping the nation meet its nonproliferation commitments by preparing surplus weapons-grade plutonium for final disposition. ARIES recently met a major milestone of producing 1 metric ton of plutonium oxide from material removed from surplus pits. The milestone was celebrated in an awards ceremony at LANL on January 28.

Operational and Mission Highlights A Monthly Summary of Top Achievements September 2020

In August 2020, transuranic (TRU) waste inventory onsite at TA-55 fell below 1,500 containers. Multiple groups within the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Weapons Production (ALDWP) have worked collaboratively to achieve this reduction in waste and residue inventory, all within the constraints of COVID-19 safety requirements.

Operational and Mission Highlights: A Monthly Summary of Top Achievements October 2021

Working with the Design Agency (Q-6), Production Agency Quality (PAQ) Division, and the NNSA Los Alamos Field Office, Detonator Production recently sold Lot 3354 to NNSA. Detonator Production personnel shipped the lot to Pantex — the Laboratory will continue to support the W76 into the future. The sale and shipment of Lot 3354 was accomplished before the closeout of FY21, achieving a key milestone that required active participation from several stakeholders within the Lab, as well as organizations external to the Laboratory. Both organizations found remedies to address challenges associated with this lot that had persisted since 2019.

Examining Supply-Side Options to Achieve 100% Clean Electricity by 2035

The growing climate emergency requires a dramatic and rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States and internationally. This study evaluates a variety of 100% clean electricity system scenarios in 2035 that could put the United States on a path to economy-wide net-zero emissions by 2050, specifically focusing on technical requirements, challenges, and cost implications. The results highlight there are multiple approaches to cost-effectively achieve a net-zero carbon grid in 2035.

Strategies for Achieving the DOE Hydrogen Shot Goal: Thermal Conversion Approaches

In July 2021 the United States (U.S.) Department of Energy (DOE) launched the first of a series of Department-wide Energy Earthshot goals designed to accelerate breakthroughs of more abundant, affordable, and reliable clean energy solutions within the decade. The Hydrogen Shot goal seeks to reduce the cost of clean hydrogen to $\$$1 per 1 kilogram in 1 decade ("1 1 1"). Today, thermal conversion of fossil fuels represents the predominant, lowest cost method of hydrogen production. In 2020 approximately 75 percent of global, dedicated hydrogen production was produced via fossil fuels using thermal conversion approaches such as steam reforming and gasification. However, carbon management techniques such as CO 2 capture and sequestration (CCS) and pyrolysis are not widely represented in the current fossil-based hydrogen production fleet. Lowering the cost of clean hydrogen production from commercial and advanced thermal conversion-based technologies is critical for successfully achieving the Hydrogen Shot goal. This report presents the findings from an initial screening analysis of several scenarios that explore cost drivers related to clean hydrogen production. The screening encompasses commercially available and developing thermal conversion technology alternatives as well as factors exogenous to the plant such as feedstock/byproduct pricing, CO 2 pipeline and storage infrastructure costs, and scale to assess potential pathways towards meeting the Hydrogen Shot goal. Additionally, this report presents initial Research and Development (R&D) strategies to advance thermal conversion technology towards meeting the Hydrogen Shot goal.

Physics-Based Real-time Analysis and Control to Achieve Transient-Free Operations for the ITER Era (Final Report)

This is the final report for the early career award for Prof. Egemen Kolemen that aimed to develop the physics and technical basis of real-time transient – i.e. disruptions and Edge Localized Modes (ELMs) – avoidance and feedback control at the DIII-D nuclear fusion facility for the ITER era. During this project, we reconstructed high quality real-time DIII-D equilibria using kinetic information from the motional Stark effect (MSE), Thomson Scattering (TS), and Charge Exchange Recombination (CER) spectroscopy. These equilibria were analyzed in real-time to determine the low-n ideal MHD stability and the pedestal stability thresholds, and to obtain plasma response models. These calculations were used to understand which physical process evolves to lead to the onset of disruption in ITER-relevant scenarios at DIII-D, and how disruption can be predicted using stability analysis as opposed to the current methods of correlation of various signals, which are descriptive but lack predictive power. In the disruption studies, we focused on tearing modes, since these constitute the vast majority of disruptions in this regime. With this knowledge, real-time disruption avoidance algorithms were developed and tested. The enhanced situation awareness and physics insight were used in advanced real-time feedback control of pedestal and core profiles, which allowed the pursuit and sustainment of transient-free high-confinement regimes that cannot be achieved via feed-forward design based on in-between shot analysis.
