Influence of coherent mesoscale structures on satellite-based Doppler lidar wind measurements

Efforts to develop display routines for overlaying gridded and nongridded data sets are discussed. The primary objective is to have the capability to review global patterns of winds and lidar samples; to zoom in on particular wind features or global areas; and to display contours of wind components and derived fields (e.g., divergence, vorticity, deformation, etc.). Current considerations in support of a polar orbiting shuttle lidar mission are discussed. Ground truth for a shuttle lidar experiment may be limited to fortuitous alignment of lidar wind profiles and scheduled rawinsonde profiles. Any improvement on this would require special rawinsonde launches and/or optimization of the shuttle orbit with global wind measurement networks.

Micromechanics of composite laminate compression failure

The Dugdale analysis for metals loaded in tension was adapted to model the failure of notched composite laminates loaded in compression. Compression testing details, MTS alignment verification, and equipment needs were resolved. Thus far, only 2 ductile material systems, HST7 and F155, were selected for study. A Wild M8 Zoom Stereomicroscope and necessary attachments for video taping and 35 mm pictures were purchased. Currently, this compression test system is fully operational. A specimen is loaded in compression, and load vs shear-crippling zone size is monitored and recorded. Data from initial compression tests indicate that the Dugdale model does not accurately predict the load vs damage zone size relationship of notched composite specimens loaded in compression.

POLYSITE - An interactive package for the selection and refinement of Landsat image training sites

A versatile multifunction package, POLYSITE, developed for Goddard's Land Analysis System, is described which simplifies the process of interactively selecting and correcting the sites used to study Landsat TM and MSS images. Image switching between the zoomed and nonzoomed image, color and shape cursor change and location display, and bit plane erase or color change, are global functions which are active at all times. Local functions possibly include manipulation of intensive study areas, new site definition, mensuration, and new image copying. The program is illustrated with the example of a full TM maser scene of metropolitan Washington, DC.

A computer graphics pilot project - Spacecraft mission support with an interactive graphics workstation

The NASA Computer Graphics Pilot Project was undertaken to enhance the quality control, productivity and efficiency of mission support operations at the Goddard Operations Support Computing Facility. The Project evolved into a set of demonstration programs for graphics intensive simulated control room operations, particularly in connection with the complex space missions that began in the 1980s. Complex mission mean more data. Graphic displays are a means to reduce the probabilities of operator errors. Workstations were selected with 1024 x 768 pixel color displays controlled by a custom VLSI chip coupled to an MC68010 chip running UNIX within a shell that permits operations through the medium of mouse-accessed pulldown window menus. The distributed workstations run off a host NAS 8040 computer. Applications of the system for tracking spacecraft orbits and monitoring Shuttle payload handling illustrate the system capabilities, noting the built-in capabilities of shifting the point of view and rotating and zooming in on three-dimensional views of spacecraft.

A computer code to process and plot laser altimetry data interactively on a microcomputer

A computer program, written in FORTRAN, is described which uses a microcomputer to interactively process and plot laser altimetry data taken with a laser altimeter currently under development at the Goddard Space Flight Center. The program uses a plot routine written for a particular microcomputer, so that the program could only be implemented on a different computer by replacing the plot routine. The altimetry data are taken from an aircraft flying over mountainous terrain. The program unpacks the raw data, processes it into along-track distance and ground height and creates plots of the terrain profile. A zoom capability is provided to expand the plot to show greater detail, along either axis, and provision is made to interactively edit out spurious data points.

Lift distributions for a 3-dimensional steady blade-vortex interaction

The interaction of a horizontally mounted V23010-1.58 semispan airfoil (simulating a helicopter rotor blade) with a tip vortex shed by a vertically mounted upstream vortex-generating wing (VGW) is investigated experimentally at 60 m/s (dynamic pressure 2.2 kPa, Reynolds number 850,000, and Mach number 0.17) in the NASA Ames 7 x 10-ft wind tunnel. The velocity field near the blade is determined using a three-dimensional zoom LDV; the spanwise lift distribution is measured by strain gages; and the results are compared with the predictions of the panel computer code VSAERO (Maskew, 1982) in graphs. Features noted include localized loss of lift due to the presence of residual VGW wake, loss of lift far inboard on the blade (indicating the large domain of VGW vorticity), little change in total lift with variations in vortex strength, and good agreement between VSAERO and experiment in overall lift distribution but not in all geometric variations).

Interactive orbital proximity operations planning system

An interactive graphical proximity operations planning system was developed, which allows on-site design of efficient, complex, multiburn maneuvers in a dynamic multispacecraft environment. Maneuvering takes place in and out of the orbital plane. The difficulty in planning such missions results from the unusual and counterintuitive character of orbital dynamics and complex time-varying operational constraints. This difficulty is greatly overcome by visualizing the relative trajectories and the relevant constraints in an easily interpretable graphical format, which provides the operator with immediate feedback on design actions. The display shows a perspective bird's-eye view of a Space Station and co-orbiting spacecraft on the background of the Station's orbital plane. The operator has control over the two modes of operation: a viewing system mode, which enables the exporation of the spatial situation about the Space Station and thus the ability to choose and zoom in on areas of interest; and a trajectory design mode, which allows the interactive editing of a series of way points and maneuvering burns to obtain a trajectory that complies with all operational constraints. A first version of this display was completed. An experimental program is planned in which operators will carry out a series of design missions which vary in complexity and constraints.

Television monitor field shifter and an opto-electronic method for obtaining a stereo image of optimal depth resolution and reduced depth distortion on a single screen

A method and apparatus for obtaining a stereo image with reduced depth distortion and optimum depth resolution. Static and dynamic depth distortion and depth resolution trade-off is provided. Cameras obtaining the images for a stereo view are converged at a convergence point behind the object to be presented in the image, and (a) the collection-surface-to-object distance, (b) the camera separation distance, and (c) the focal lengths of zoom lenses for the camera are all increased. Doubling the distances cuts the static depth distortion in half while maintaining image size and depth resolution. Dynamic depth distortion is minimized by panning a stereo view-collecting camera system about a circle which passes through the convergence point and the cameras' first nodal points. Horizontal field shifting of the television fields on a television monitor brings both the monitor and the stereo views within the viewer's limit of binocular fusion.

Development and verification of local/global analysis techniques for laminated composites

Analysis and design methods for laminated composite materials have been the subject of considerable research over the past 20 years, and are currently well developed. In performing the detailed three-dimensional analyses which are often required in proximity to discontinuities, however, analysts often encounter difficulties due to large models. Even with the current availability of powerful computers, models which are too large to run, either from a resource or time standpoint, are often required. There are several approaches which can permit such analyses, including substructuring, use of superelements or transition elements, and the global/local approach. This effort is based on the so-called zoom technique to global/local analysis, where a global analysis is run, with the results of that analysis applied to a smaller region as boundary conditions, in as many iterations as is required to attain an analysis of the desired region. Before beginning the global/local analyses, it was necessary to evaluate the accuracy of the three-dimensional elements currently implemented in the Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) Testbed. It was also desired to install, using the Experimental Element Capability, a number of displacement formulation elements which have well known behavior when used for analysis of laminated composites.

A preliminary investigation of communication techniques for local and remote access to image databases

A software technique which allows users to examine images remotely while minimizing transmission time, is discussed. The technique provides a browsing capability, making it possible to roam over larger images, to zoom to various resolution levels, and to specify subregions of interest in the image to display at full resolution. The software permits analysts to remotely submit images for processing and to review the processing result. The capabilities of the technique under varying conditions and the speed at which imagery can be displayed over direct connect serial lines are discussed and examples of the imagery at various levels of resolution are presented.

Exponential sensor array geometry and simulation

The polar exponential arrays whose geometric parameters are presently analyzed have proven superior to X-Y raster imaging sensors when wide FOV, high central resolution, and rotation- and zoom-invariance are required; attractive applications for such arrays are in spacecraft docking/tracking/stationkeeping and mobile robot navigation. Attention is given to optimal designs minimizing sensor configuration and computation requirements, and the relation of geometric parameters to the three-dimensional sensing precision requirements driving sensor design. A method for smooth patching of the 'blind-spot' singularity in the sensor with a uniformly high-resolution 'fovea' is also presented.

Parallel algorithms for interactive manipulation of digital terrain models

Interactive three-dimensional graphics applications, such as terrain data representation and manipulation, require extensive arithmetic processing. Massively parallel machines are attractive for this application since they offer high computational rates, and grid connected architectures provide a natural mapping for grid based terrain models. Presented here are algorithms for data movement on the massive parallel processor (MPP) in support of pan and zoom functions over large data grids. It is an extension of earlier work that demonstrated real-time performance of graphics functions on grids that were equal in size to the physical dimensions of the MPP. When the dimensions of a data grid exceed the processing array size, data is packed in the array memory. Windows of the total data grid are interactively selected for processing. Movement of packed data is needed to distribute items across the array for efficient parallel processing. Execution time for data movement was found to exceed that for arithmetic aspects of graphics functions. Performance figures are given for routines written in MPP Pascal.

A 3D visualization system for molecular structures

The properties of molecules derive in part from their structures. Because of the importance of understanding molecular structures various methodologies, ranging from first principles to empirical technique, were developed for computing the structure of molecules. For large molecules such as polymer model compounds, the structural information is difficult to comprehend by examining tabulated data. Therefore, a molecular graphics display system, called MOLDS, was developed to help interpret the data. MOLDS is a menu-driven program developed to run on the LADC SNS computer systems. This program can read a data file generated by the modeling programs or data can be entered using the keyboard. MOLDS has the following capabilities: draws the 3-D representation of a molecule using stick, ball and ball, or space filled model from Cartesian coordinates, draws different perspective views of the molecule; rotates the molecule on the X, Y, Z axis or about some arbitrary line in space, zooms in on a small area of the molecule in order to obtain a better view of a specific region; and makes hard copy representation of molecules on a graphic printer. In addition, MOLDS can be easily updated and readily adapted to run on most computer systems.
