Microwave microstrip resonator measurements of Y1Ba2Cu3O(7-x) and Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O(8-y) thin films

Radio frequency (RF) surface resistance measurement experiments on high T(sub c) thin films were performed. The method uses a microstrip resonator comprising a top gold conductor strip, an alumina dielectric layer, and a separate superconductivity ground plane. The surface resistance of the superconducting ground plane can be determined, with reference to a gold calibration standard, from the measured quality factor of the half-wave resonator. Initial results near 7 GHz over the temperature range from 25 to 300 K are presented for YBa2Cu3O(7-x) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8-y) thin film samples deposited by an electron beam flash evaporation process. The RF surface resistance at 25 K for both materials in these samples was found to be near 25 milliohms.

Millimeter wave surface resistance of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R=Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) superconductors

The measurements are reported of the millimeter wave surface resistance R(sub s) at 58.6 GHz of bulk samples of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) (R = Y,Eu,Dy,Sm,Er) and of YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) superconducting films, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The bulk samples were prepared by cold pressing the powders of RBa2Cu3O(7-delta) into one in. disks. The powders were prepared by several sinterings in one atmosphere of oxygen at 925 C, with grindings between sinterings, to obtain the superconducting phase. The thin films were deposited on SrTiO3 and LaGaO3 substrates by pulsed laser ablation. Each sample was measured by replacing the end wall of a gold-plated Te sub 013 circular mode copper cavity with the sample and determining the cavity quality factor . From the difference in the Q-factor of the cavity, with and without the sample, the R(sub s) of the sample was determined.

Superconductivity in the Sn-Ba-Sr-Y-Cu-O system

Since Bednorz and Muller discovered high-T(sub c) superconductivity in the La-Ba-Cu-O compound, several families of superconducting oxides have been synthesized. Here, researchers report the results of search for superconductivity in the compounds based on tin, which has a lone electron pair like Bi, Tl, Pb. The following compounds were synthesized: Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ba1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Ca1Cu3Ox, Sn1Sr1Mg1Cu3Ox, Sn1Ca1Mg1Cu3Ox. The initial components were oxides and carbonates of the appropriate elements. Standard firing-grinding procedure was used. Final heating was carried out at 960 C during 12 hours. Then the samples were cooled inside the furnace. All the synthesis cycles were carried out in air atmosphere. Among the synthesized compounds only Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox showed remarkable conductivity. Other compounds were practically dielectrics. Presence of a possible superconductivity in Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox was defined by using the Meissner effect. At low temperature a deviation from paramagnetic behavior is observed. The hysteresis loops obtained at lower temperatures undoubtly testify to the presence of a superconductive phase in the sample. However, the part of the superconductive phase in the Sn1Ba1Sr1Cu3Ox ceramic turned out to be small, less than 2 percent, which agrees with the estimation from magnetic data. In order to increase the content of the superconductive phase two-valent cations Ba, Sr were partially substituted by univalent (K) and three-valent ones (Y).

Antiferromagnetism in Co-57-doped La2CuO(4-y) studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy

Moessbauer effect studies of Co-57-doped La2CuO(4-y) were performed at temperatures between 4.2 K and room temperature. These confirm the antiferromagnetic ordering of these compounds below room temperature. Temperature dependence of the quadrupole splitting shows that the hyperfine field is at an angle with the c-axis.

A geometric comparison of video camera-captured raster data to vector-parented raster data generated by the X-Y digitizing table

The relative accuracy of a georeferenced raster data set captured by the Megavision 1024XM system using the Videk Megaplus CCD cameras is compared to a georeferenced raster data set generated from vector lines manually digitized through the ELAS software package on a Summagraphics X-Y digitizer table. The study also investigates the amount of time necessary to fully complete the rasterization of the two data sets, evaluating individual areas such as time necessary to generate raw data, time necessary to edit raw data, time necessary to georeference raw data, and accuracy of georeferencing against a norm. Preliminary results exhibit a high level of agreement between areas of the vector-parented data and areas of the captured file data where sufficient control points were chosen. Maps of 1:20,000 scale were digitized into raster files of 5 meter resolution per pixel and overall error in RMS was estimated at less than eight meters. Such approaches offer time and labor-saving advantages as well as increasing the efficiency of project scheduling and enabling the digitization of new types of data.

Cepheid companions? FM Aquilae, FN Aquilae, RX Aurigae, Y Lacertae, and RS Orionis

IUE spectra have been used to search for companions of FN Aql and RX Aur, two classical Cepheids which have been tentatively identified as binary stars on the basis of cyclic variations in their pulsation periods. Three other Cepheids, FM Aql, Y Lac, and RS Ori, suspected of having blue companions from the (U-B), (B-V) diagram, have also been investigated. There is no indication of a companion of FM Aql, FN Aql, and RX Aur. If these stars have companions, they must be at least as cool as A0 V, Al V, and A1 V, respectively.

Electrical transport measurements on polycrystalline superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O films

The current-voltage, I-V, characteristics of polycrystalline Y-Ba-Cu-O films have been measured as a function of temperature. The I-V characteristics are interpreted using a model based upon an array of weak links with a statistical distribution of critical currents. In addition, evidence is found that the supercurrents flow in nearly independent filaments near Tc. Various criteria are discussed with respect to the definition of the transport critical current, Ic, in these films. A temperature dependence for Ic has also been deduced from the I-V data by appealing to an empirical scaling law. It is proposed that this temperature dependence is representative of the weaker links within the critical current distribution.

High Tc superconducting IR detectors from Y-Ba-Cu-O thin films

A thin-film high-Tc superconducting multielement optical detector made of Y-Ba-Cu-O has been designed and evaluated using optical pulses from a diode laser (830 nm) and a Q-switched CO2-laser (10.6 microns). Different thin films have been tested. A laser deposited film showed the strongest response amplitude for short pulses and responded to an ultrafast, 50 ps wide pulse. Comparisons between dR/dT and response as a function of temperature indicated, however, a bolometric response.

High-T sub c fluorine-doped YBa2Cu3O(y) films on ceramic substrates by screen printing

Thick films of fluorine-doped YBa2Cu3O(y) were screen printed on highly polished alumina, magnesia spinel, strontium titanate, and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. They were annealed at 1000 C and soaked in oxygen at 450 C, followed by slow cooling to room temperature. The films were characterized by electrical resistivity measurements as a function of temperature and x-ray diffraction. The film on YSZ showed the best characteristics with a T sub c (onset) of 91 K, T sub c (R equals 0) of 88.2 K, and a transition width, delta T sub c (10-90 percent), of approximately 1.7 K. The film adhesion, probably controlled by interdiffusion of cations between the film and the substrate, was good in all cases except on strontium titanate where the film completely detached from the substrate.

Microstructure and magnetization of Y-Ba-Cu-O prepared by melt quenching, partial melting and doping

Y-Ba-Cu-O samples prepared by means of a variety of melt-based techniques exhibit high values for their magnetic properties compared with those of samples prepared by solid state sintering. These techniques include single-stage partial melting as well as melt quenching followed by a second heat treatment stage, and they have been applied to the stoichiometric 123 composition as well as to formulations containing excess yttrium or other dopants. The structure of these melt-based samples is highly aligned, and the magnetization readings exhibit large anisotropy. At 77 K and magnetic field intensities of about 2 kOe, diamagnetic susceptibilities as high as -14 x 10(exp -3) emu/g were obtained in the cases of melt-quenched samples and remanent magnetization values as high as 10 emu/g for samples prepared by partial melting.

Compatibilities of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) type phase in quintenary systems Y-Ba-Cu-O-X (impurity)

Isothermal phase diagrams at various oxygen pressures were studied by powder diffraction and chemical analytical methods. The components, Y, Ba, Cu, and O (specifically O2, O2-, and O2 sup 2-) are treated, together with C (specifically CO2 and CO2 sup 2-), alkaline metals, Mg, alkaline earths, Sc, 3-d and 4-f elements. Effects of the substitutions at the structural sites of YBa2Cu3O(9-delta) on T sub c are discussed with respect to changes in crystallochemical characteristics of the substituted phase and to the nature of the substituents.

Screen printed Y and Bi-based superconductors

High T(sub c) superconducting thick film was prepared by screen printing process. Y-based (YBa2Cu3O(7 - x)) superconducting thick films were printed on 211/Al2O3, SNT/Al2O3, and YSZ substrates. Because of poor adhesion of the superconducting thick films to 211/Al2O3 and SNT/Al2O3 substrates, relatively low T(sub c) and J(sub c) values were obtained from the films printed on these substrates. Critical temperatures of YBa2Cu3O(7 - x) thick films deposited on 211/Al2O3 and SNT/Al2O3 substrates were about 80 K. The critical current densities of these films were less than 2 A/cm(exp 2). Higher T(sub c) and J(sub c) films were printed on the YSZ substrates; T(sub c) = 86.4 K and J(sub c) = 50.4 A/cm(exp 2). Multiple lead samples were also prepared on the YSZ substrates. These showed lower T(sub c) and J(sub c) values than plain samples. The heat treatment conditions of the multiple lead samples are still under investigation. Bi-based superconductor thick films have been obtained so far. Improving the superconducting properties of the BSCCO screen printed thick films will be emphasized in future work.

Y1Ba2Cu3O(6+delta) growth on thin Y-enhanced SiO2 buffer layers on silicon

SiO2 buffer layers as thin as 2 nm have been developed for use in the growth of Y1Ba2Cu3O(6+delta) thin films on silicon substrates. The SiO2 layers are formed through Y enhancement of silicon oxidation, and are highly stoichiometric. Y1Ba2Cu3O(6+delta) film growth on silicon with thin buffer layers has shown c orientation and Tc0 = 78 K.

Oxygen-induced Al surface segregation in Al(x)Ga(1-x)As and the effect of Y overlayers on the oxidation of the Y/Al(x)Ga(1-x)As interface

The oxidation of Al(x)Ga(1-x)As (x = 0.15, AlGaAs) was studied by AES and XPS at 350 C and different oxygen exposures (up to 5 x 10 exp 4 L). Also studied were the effects of yttrium overlayers (theta = 3 ML) on the oxidation of the AlGaAs surface. Substantial oxygen-induced Al surface segregation has been observed for both yttriated and nonyttriated AlGaAs surfaces which increased with increasing oxygen exposure. Also observed is a significant Y-enhanced oxidation of the AlGaAs surface. Oxidation of the yttriated AlGaAs surface was found to be a factor of 4 greater than that of the nonyttriated surface. Also, while oxidation of the nonyttriated AlGaAs yielded mainly Al2O(x) (x less than 3) and only little Ga2O3, the yttriated AlGaAs surface oxide layer was principally Ga2O3 and stoichiometric Al2O3. However, both the yttriated and nonyttriated surfaces were found to contain metallic As within the oxide layer.

Program Aids Creation Of X-Y Plots

VEGAS computer program enables application programmers to create X-Y plots in various modes through high-level subroutine calls. Modes consist of passive, autoupdate, and interactive modes. In passive mode, VEGAS takes input data, produces plot, and returns control to application program. In autoupdate mode, forms plots and automatically updates them as more information received. In interactive mode, displays plot and provides popup menus for user to alter appearance of plot or to modify data. Written in FORTRAN 77.

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide resonators of Y-Ba-Cu-O and Tl-Ba-Ca-Cu-O on LaAlO3

Conductor-backed coplanar waveguide (CBCPW) resonators operating at 10.8 GHz have been fabricated from Tl-Ba-Ca-O (TBCCO) and Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) thin films on LaAlO3. The resonators consist of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) patterned on the superconducting film side of the LaAlO3 substrate with a gold ground plane coated on the opposite side. These resonators were tested in the temperature range from 14 to 106 K. At 77 K, the best of our TBCCO and YBCO resonators have an unloaded quality factor (Qo) 7 and 4 times, respectively, larger than that of a similar all-gold resonator. In this study, the Qo's of the TBCCO resonators were larger than those of their YBCO counterparts throughout the aforementioned temperature range.
