Analysis of diagonal G and subspace W approximations within fully self-consistent GW calculations for bulk semiconducting systems

Fully self-consistent GW (sc-GW) methods are now available to evaluate quasiparticle and spectral properties of various molecular and bulk systems. However, such techniques based on the full matrix of G and W are computationally demanding. Additionally, the routinely used single-shot GW approximation (G 0 W 0 ) has an undesirable dependency on the choice of initial exchange-correlation functional. In the literature, many so-called self-consistent GW methods are based on diagonal approximation of G and low-ranking approximation of W. It is thus worth checking how good such approximations are in comparison with the full matrix method. In this work, we consider AlAs, AlP, GaP, and ZnS as the prototype systems to perform sc-GW calculations by expressing the full G matrix using a plane-wave basis set. We compared our sc-GW results with the diagonal G and subspace W approximated sc-GW results (sc-GW-diagG and sc-GW-subW methods). In the sc-GW-diagG method, interacting G is expanded in the eigenvectors of noninteracting G such that only diagonal elements are retained, whereas the number of eigenmodes is truncated in sc-GW-subW calculations. A systematic analysis of the results obtained from the above techniques is presented. The differences in the quasiparticle band gap between the approximated and the full matrix sc-GW approaches are mostly less than 1.7%, which validates such widely adopted approximations, and also shows how such low-ranking approximation can be used to include higher-order terms such as the vertex correction.

Large change of interlayer vibrational coupling with stacking in Mo 1-x W x Te 2

Stacking variations in quasi-two-dimensional materials can have an important influence on material properties, such as changing the topology of the band structure. Unfortunately, the weakness of van der Waals (vdW) interactions makes it difficult to compute the stacking dependence of properties, and even in a material as simple as graphite the stacking energetics remain unclear. Mo 1 - x W x Te 2 is a material in which three differently stacked phases are conveniently accessible by temperature changes: 1 T ' , T d * , and the reported Weyl semimetal phase T d . Additionally, the transitions proceed via layer sliding, and the corresponding interlayer shear mode (ISM) is relevant not just for the stacking energetics but also for understanding the relationship between Weyl physics and structural changes. However, the interlayer interactions of Mo 1 - x W x Te 2 are not well understood, with wide variation in computed properties. We report inelastic neutron scattering of the ISM in a Mo 0.91 W 0.09 Te 2 crystal. The ISM energies are generally consistent with the linear chain model, as expected given the weak interlayer interaction, though there are some discrepancies from predicted intensities. However, the interlayer force constants K x in the T d * and 1 T ' phases are substantially weaker than that of T d at 75(3) and 83(3)%, respectively. Considering that the relative positioning of atoms in neighboring layers is approximately the same regardless of overall stacking, our results suggest that longer-range influences, such as stacking-induced electronic band-structure changes, may be responsible for the substantial change in the interlayer vibrational coupling and thus the C 55 elastic constant. These findings should elucidate the stacking energetics of Mo 1 - x W x Te 2 and other vdW layered materials.

Synthesis and structural characterization of a hydrated sodium–caesium tetracosatungstate(VI), Na 5 Cs 19 [W 24 O 84 ]·21H 2 O

Crystal formation of pentasodium nonadecacesium tetracosatungstate(VI) heneikosahydrate, Na 5 Cs 19 [W 24 O 84 ]·21H 2 O, was successfully achieved by the conversion of [H 2 W 12 O 42 ] 10– through the addition of excess Cs + . The crystal structure comprising the toroidal isopolyoxidometalate is presented, as well as its Raman spectrum. Na 5 Cs 19 (H 2 O) 21 W 24 O 84 crystallizes in the rhombohedral space group R$\overline{3}$ with an obverse centering. The title compound represents the addition of a new member to the isopolytungstate family with mixed alkali counter-ions and contains rarely observed five-coordinate tungsten(VI) atoms in the [W 24 O 84 ] 24– anion (site symmetry C 3i ) arising from the conversion mediated by Cs + counter-ions.

The gamma-gamma prime region of the Ni-Al-Cr-Ti-W-Mo system at 850 C

The compositional limits of gamma and gamma-prime phases in nickel-base superalloys are determined experimentally. It is found that gamma-prime had the following range of compositions for the various elements contained in this phase: 72.1 to 78.0 at.% Ni; 7.8 to 17.3 at.% Al; 1.5 to 8.9 at.% Cr; 0.3 to 13.9 at.% Ti, 0.0 to 3.9 at.% Mo, and 0.0 to 7.2 at.% W. The composition of gamma varied as follows: Ni is balanced; 1.9 to 15.4 at.% Al; 6.6 to 30.7 at.% Cr; 0.0 to 3.1 at.% Ti; 0.0 to 8.7 at.% Mo; and 0.0 to 5.0 at.% W. W additions to the gamma appeared to increase somewhat the solubility of Al in this phase. Mo and W added together decreased the solubility of Al in gamma.

Moored surface wind observations at four sites along the Pacific equator between 140 and 95 deg W

Moored surface wind measurements were recorded along the Pacific equator at 140, 124, 110, and 95 deg W during portions of 1980-1985. Minimum record length is one year. The annual mean and monthly mean westward speeds at 110 deg W were about 1.5 m/s higher during the year preceding the 1982-1983 El Nino than in the year following this event. The annual cycle, which moved westward at about 0.8 m/s, consisted of weak westward and northward speeds in February-April and vice versa in September-October. The spectral slope between 5-day and 0.05-day periods was -1.5. The rms amplitude of the 95-percent statistically significant diurnal period oscillation was 0.3 m/s, and the meridional component was nearly twice as large as the zonal component. The diurnal period wave was coherent (at the 95-percent confidence level) between 95 and 124 deg W, with westward phase propagation of about 138 m/s. No statistically significant spectral peak was found in the 40- to 50-day intraseasonal period band. The surface zonal ocean current component, which reached approximately 0.5 and -0.5 m/s in April and October, respectively at 110 deg W, influenced the surface wind stress computed from the quadratic bulk aerodynamic formulation by 10-20 percent.

Test Results of a 200 W Class Hall Thruster

The performance of a 200 W class Hall thruster was evaluated. Performance measurements were taken at power levels between 90 W and 250 W. At the nominal 200 W design point, the measured thrust was 11.3 mN. and the specific impulse was 1170 s excluding cathode flow in the calculation. A laboratory model 3 mm diameter hollow cathode was used for all testing. The engine was operated on laboratory power supplies in addition to a breadboard power processing unit fabricated from commercially available DC to DC converters.

Evaluating Thermally Damaged Polyimide Insulated Wiring (MIL-W-81381) with Ultrasound

A series of experiments to investigate the use of ultrasound for measuring wire insulation have been conducted. Initial laboratory tests were performed on MIL-W-81381/7,/12, and /21 aviation wire, a wire that has polyimide (Kapton Registered Trademark) layers for insulation. Samples of this wiring were exposed to 370C temperatures for different periods of time to induce a range of thermal damage. For each exposure, 12 samples of each gauge (12, 16, and 20 gauges) were processed. The velocity of the lowest order axisymmetric ultrasonic guided mode, a mode that is sensitive to the geometry and stiffness of the wire conductor and insulation, was measured. The phase velocity for the 20-gauge MIL-W-81381/7 wire had a baseline value of 3023 +/- 78 m/s. After exposure to the high temperatures, the wire's phase velocity rapidly increased, and reached an asymptotic value of 3598 +/- 20 m/s after 100 hours exposure. Similar behavior was measured for the 16 gauge MIL-W-81381/21 wire and 12 gauge MIL-W-81381/12 wire which had baseline values of 3225 +/- 22 m/s and 3403 +/- 33 m/s respectively, and reached asymptotic values of 3668 +/- 19 m/s, and 3679 +/- 42 m/s respectively. These measured velocity changes represent changes of 19, 14, and 8 percent respectively for the 20, 16, and 12 gauge wires. Finally, some results for a wire with an ethylene tetrafluoroethylene insulation are reported. Qualitatively similar behaviors are noted ultrasonically.

Local oscillator chain for 1.55 to 1.75 THz with 100-(mu)W peak power

We report on the design and performance of a fix-tuned x2x 3x 3 frequency multiplier chain that covers 1.55-1.75 THz. The chain is nominally pumped with 100 mW at W-band. At 120 K the measured output power is larger than 4 (mu)W across the band with a peak power of 100 (mu) W at 1.665 THz. A similar chain operated at room temperature produced a peak power of 21 (mu)W. These power levels now make it possible to deploy multipixel heterodyne imaging arrays in this frequency range.

Dual Frequency Feed Horn Design for a Compact Cloud and Precipitation Radar Operating at Ka- and W-band

We present the design of a compact dual frequency feed horn optimized to operate at Ka-band (35.75 GHz) and W-band (94.05 GHz). The structure consists of a single spline profile horn along with a diplexer having orthogonal Ka- and W-band ports and a band pass filter at the Ka band port. The filter is used to achieve high isolation between the Ka- and W-band ports. A directivity of 21 dB and -12 dB beam width of 31 degrees was achieved at Ka-band and a directivity of 26 dB and -12 dB beam width of 21 degrees was achieved at W-band. The overall structure is compact and easy to machine. The dual frequency horn will be tested as part of a Ka/W-band breadboard radar.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: optimized $w$CDM simulation-based inference with weak lensing map-level hybrid statistics

We present cosmological constraints from the Dark Energy Survey Year 3 (DES Y3) weak lensing data using hierarchical hybrid statistics within a Bayesian simulation-based inference framework that is based on the Gower Street simulations. To maximize the precision of the inference, we have developed a new, information-theory based, data compression of the weak lensing maps to just seven highly informative summary statistics. The hybrid scheme exploits the high information content of the power spectrum, compressing both the power spectrum and neural-based summaries that are designed to extract further information. Our simulation-based approach enables principled forward modelling of all major sources of systematic uncertainty and survey properties into realistic mock observations, including the survey mask, photometric redshift uncertainties, intrinsic galaxy alignments, multiplicative shear calibration bias, source galaxy clustering, non-Gaussian shape noise, and non-linear structure formation. The summary statistics are then used in a Bayesian simulation-based inference pipeline. The inference is validated through coverage tests and checks for robustness against baryonic feedback. Assuming a $w$CDM cosmology, our analysis yields $S_8 = 0.808 \pm 0.017$, $Ω_{\rm m} = 0.325 \pm 0.024$, and $w < -0.766$ (marginalized posterior 68 per cent credible intervals). This rigorous combination of information theory, physics- and neural network-based extreme data compression, and principled Bayesian analysis improves the figure of merit for $(Ω_{\rm m}, S_8, w)$ by 60 per cent over the previous state-of-the-art, and by almost a factor of 3 over two-point analyses of the same data. They are the most precise joint constraints on $(Ω_{\rm m}, S_8, w)$ from weak gravitational lensing data alone of any survey to date. We intend to apply this analysis to the more recent DES Y6 data.

Measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced in top-quark decays using dilepton events at $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV with the ATLAS experiment

A measurement of the polarisation of W bosons produced in top-quark decays is presented, using proton–proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = $13$ TeV. The data were collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 . The measurement is performed selecting $t$$\overline{t}$ events decaying into final states with two charged leptons (electrons or muons) and at least two b-tagged jets. The polarisation is extracted from the differential cross-section distribution of the cos$⁡θ$* variable, where $θ$* is the angle between the momentum direction of the charged lepton from the W boson decay and the reversed momentum direction of the b-quark from the top-quark decay, both calculated in the W boson rest frame. Parton-level results, corrected for the detector acceptance and resolution, are presented for the cos⁡θ* angle. The measured fractions of longitudinal, left- and right-handed polarisation states are found to be $f$ 0 = 0.684 ± 0.005 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.), $f$ L = 0.318 ± 0.003 (stat.) ± 0.008 (syst.) and $f$ R = -0.002 ± 0.002 (stat.) ± 0.014 (syst.), in agreement with the Standard Model prediction.

Test of the universality of τ and μ lepton couplings in W-boson decays with the ATLAS detector

The standard model of particle physics encapsulates our best current understanding of physics at the smallest scales. A fundamental axiom of this theory is the universality of the couplings of the different generations of leptons to the electroweak gauge bosons. The measurement of the ratio of the decay rate of W bosons to τ leptons and muons, R ( τ/μ ), constitutes an important test of this axiom. Using 139 fb –1 of proton–proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, we report a measurement of this quantity from di-leptonic $t\overline{t}$ events where the top quarks decay into a W boson and a bottom quark. We can distinguish muons originating from W bosons and those originating from an intermediate τ lepton through the muon transverse impact parameter and differences in the muon transverse momentum spectra. The measured value of R ( τ/μ ) is 0.992 ± 0.013 [± 0.007(stat) ± 0.011(syst)] and is in agreement with the hypothesis of universal lepton couplings as postulated in the standard model. This is the only such measurement from the Large Hadron Collider, so far, and obtains twice the precision of previous measurements.

Measurement of W±-boson differential cross-sections in proton–proton collisions with low pile-up data at s=5.02 TeV and 13TeV with the ATLAS detector

High precision single-differential W±$$W^\pm $$-boson production cross-sections as a function of electron or muon transverse momentum pT$$p_\textrm{T}$$ or their pseudorapity η$$\eta $$, as well as double-differential cross-sections as functions of these variables, are measured in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=5.02$$\sqrt{s}=5.02$$ TeV and 13 TeV. The W-boson charge asymmetry as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ is also measured. The data, collected in dedicated runs at reduced instantaneous luminosity with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, correspond to integrated luminosities of 255 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 5.02 TeV and 338 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 13 TeV. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling constant αs$$\alpha _s$$ including transverse-momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using several parton distribution functions. The impact of the measured differential cross-sections as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ on the determination of these functions is studied using a profiling technique.

Measurement of simplified template cross sections of the Higgs boson produced in association with W or Z bosons in the H → b b ¯ decay channel in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

Differential cross sections are measured for the standard model Higgs boson produced in association with vector bosons (W, Z) and decaying to a pair of b quarks. Measurements are performed within the framework of the simplified template cross sections. The analysis relies on the leptonic decays of the W and Z bosons, resulting in final states with 0, 1, or 2 electrons or muons. The Higgs boson candidates are either reconstructed from pairs of resolved b-tagged jets, or from single large-radius jets containing the particles arising from two b quarks. Proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018 and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 , are analyzed. The inclusive signal strength, defined as the product of the observed production cross section and branching fraction relative to the standard model expectation, combining all analysis categories, is found to be μ = $1.15^{+0.22}_{-0.20}$. This corresponds to an observed (expected) significance of 6.3 (5.6) standard deviations.

Search for high-mass resonances in a final state comprising a gluon and two hadronically decaying W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a gluon, g, and two W bosons is presented. A Kaluza-Klein gluon, g$_{KK}$, decaying in cascade via a scalar radion R, g$_{KK}$ → gR → gWW, is considered. The final state studied consists of three large-radius jets, two of which contain the products of hadronically decaying W bosons, and the third one the hadronization products of the gluon. The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The masses of the g$_{KK}$ and R candidates are reconstructed as trijet and dijet masses, respectively. These are used for event categorization and signal extraction. No excess of data events above the standard model background expectation is observed. Upper limits are set on the product of the g$_{KK}$ production cross section and its branching fraction via a radion R to gWW. This is the first analysis examining the resonant WW+jet signature and setting limits on the two resonance masses in an extended warped extra-dimensional model.

Constraints on standard model effective field theory for a Higgs boson produced in association with W or Z bosons in the H → $\textrm{b}\overline{\textrm{b}}$ decay channel in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A standard model effective field theory (SMEFT) analysis with dimension-six operators probing nonresonant new physics effects is performed in the Higgs-strahlung process, where the Higgs boson is produced in association with a W or Z boson, in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The final states in which the W or Z boson decays leptonically and the Higgs boson decays to a pair of bottom quarks are considered. The analyzed data were collected by the CMS experiment between 2016 and 2018 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . An approach designed to simultaneously optimize the sensitivity to Wilson coefficients of multiple SMEFT operators is employed. Likelihood scans as functions of the Wilson coefficients that carry SMEFT sensitivity in this final state are performed for different expansions in SMEFT. The results are consistent with the predictions of the standard model.

Measurements of the pp → W ± γγ and pp → Zγγ cross sections at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV and limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings

The cross section for W or Z boson production in association with two photons is measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The W → ℓν and Z → ℓℓ decay modes (where ℓ = e, μ) are used to extract the Wγγ and Zγγ cross sections in a phase space defined by electron (muon) with transverse momentum larger than 30 GeV and photon transverse momentum larger than 20 GeV. All leptons and photons are required to have absolute pseudorapidity smaller than 2.5. The measured cross sections in this phase space are σ(Wγγ) = ${13.6}_{-1.9}^{+1.9}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-4.0}^{+4.0}$ (syst) ± 0.08 (PDF + scale) fb and σ(Zγγ) = ${5.41}_{-0.55}^{+0.58}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-.070}^{+0.64}$(syst) ± 0.06 (PDF + scale) fb. Limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings are set in the framework of an effective field theory with dimension-8 operators.
