Pulsar Movement Animation and its Corresponding Signal Visualization for Timing Source

The global positioning system, widely used for synchronization in energy systems, faces vulnerabilities, while Pulsars—natural cosmic clocks—offer long-term stability as potential backup timing sources. Existing research lacks sufficient exploration of Pulsar signal animation under astrophysical factors, limiting practical applications. This study establishes a mathematical model based on the rotation dynamics of dual-beam Pulsars and implements dynamic signal visualization through MATLAB. The model dynamically illustrates the relative motion between Pulsar beams and observers via timeline calculations, beam intensity modeling, and rotation matrix derivation. A case study on the millisecond Pulsar J1939+2134 reveals that observer angles influence signal peak timing, while beam widths determine signal duration, highlighting the critical role of parameter calibration for timing accuracy. Open-source code and animation results are publicly shared, providing tools for interdisciplinary research. This study validates the feasibility of Pulsar-based timing in energy systems, offering new insights to enhance synchronization robustness.

ChemoGraph: Interactive Visual Exploration of the Chemical Space

Exploratory analysis of the chemical space is an important task in the field of cheminformatics. For example, in drug discovery research, chemists investigate sets of thousands of chemical compounds in order to identify novel yet structurally similar synthetic compounds to replace natural products. Manually exploring the chemical space inhabited by all possible molecules and chemical compounds is impractical, and therefore presents a challenge. To fill this gap, we present ChemoGraph, a novel visual analytics technique for interactively exploring related chemicals. In ChemoGraph, we formalize a chemical space as a hypergraph and apply novel machine learning models to compute related chemical compounds. It uses a database to find related compounds from a known space and a machine learning model to generate new ones, which helps enlarge the known space. Moreover, ChemoGraph highlights interactive features that support users in viewing, comparing, and organizing computationally identified related chemicals. With a drug discovery usage scenario and initial expert feedback from a case study, we demonstrate the usefulness of ChemoGraph.

MODE: A Web Application for Interactive Visualization and Exploration of Omics Data

Studies generating transcriptomics, proteomics, lipidomics, and metabolomics (colloquially referred to as “omics”) data allow researchers to find biomarkers or molecular targets, or understand complex biological structures and functions by identifying changes in biomolecule abundance and expression between experimental conditions. Omics data is multi-dimensional and oftentimes summarization techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) are used to identify high-level patterns in data. Though useful, these summaries don’t allow exploration of detailed patterns in omics data that may have biological relevance. The use of interactive HTML displays with plots allows researchers to interact with omics data at a detailed level, but building these displays requires significant coding expertise. To overcome this barrier, the software MODE was built to empower users to build their own interactive HTML displays to support scientific discovery. These displays are easily shareable, do not depend on a specific operating system, and allow users to effortlessly sort and filter plots by categorical or numerical variables. MODE allows users to build and share these displays with several options for plot design and meta selection. In conclusion, the MODE web application and its capabilities are presented and then demonstrated on lipidomics data from a leaf wounding study.

Understanding the Golden Eagle and Bald Eagle Sensory Worlds to Enhance Detection and Response to Wind Turbines

Golden Eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and Bald Eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) are known to be involved in collisions with wind turbines. Our primary goal of this project was to characterize the auditory and visual physiology of Golden and Bald Eagles with the ultimate intention of providing this information to engineers for the development of novel deterrent systems. These systems can be used to reduce the risk of eagle collisions with turbines by alerting eagles to the presence of wind turbines so that they may change course, or deterring them from approaching turbines while operational. We proposed a two-phase research project. First, we needed to know basic eagle sensory physiology to develop effective multimodal (auditory and visual) stimuli tuned to eagle’s specific sensory capabilities. Second, we complemented the first phase of the project by running behavioral tests of prototype stimuli in wildlife rehabilitation centers to determine the responses of eagles. These two stages were necessary to ensure that the stimuli characteristics were not only conspicuous to the Golden and Bald Eagle’s sensory systems, but also generated the intended response when flying near wind turbines (e.g. enhanced detection).

Computational Math Problems for a Clean Energy Future

Cutting edge computational mathematics are ubiquitous in renewable energy research. Problems in resilient and reliable electric grid operations, infrastructure planning, wind farm yaw control, and more demand sophisticated and scalable computational tools that enable the transition of renewable energy technologies from proof of concept to deployment into our energy system. The mission of the Computational Science Center at NREL is to lead the lab's efforts to solve energy challenges using high-performance computing (HPC), computational science, applied mathematics, scientific data management, visualization, and informatics. In this poster, we provide a short overview of three areas of computational mathematics research at NREL: wind power scenario generation for stochastic grid operations and infrastructure planning, improved rational function approximations for electromagnetic transients codes, and wind farm yaw control using a combination of the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and reinforcement learning (RL). Increasing penetrations of renewable energy into power grids motivate the investigation of new approaches to characterizing uncertainty for five-minute economic dispatch problems. Similarly, as the penetration of distributed energy resources on power grids increases, it becomes important to revisit our methods of modelling transient phenomena, i.e. electromagnetic transients programs. Finally, the combination of ADMM and RL for wind farm yaw control presented here can potentially increase the efficiency of the deployed distributed controllers by orders of magnitude.

A Perspective into Operando Methods for Probing Catalytic Interfaces

Rational design of electrocatalysts for (photo)electrochemical (PEC) processes like hydrogen and oxygen evolution and CO2 reduction reactions is aided by the recent improvements in capabilities of operando measurements, where morphology, composition, and/or function are probed during active catalysis. Through operando microscopy and spectroscopy, structure, catalytic microenvironment, oxidation state, adsorbates, and products can be measured to gain a better understanding of catalyst behavior and suggest possible improvements. Visualizing evolving catalyst morphologies, surface compositions, and electrochemical behavior also helps address many fundamental research questions for a better understanding of catalytic mechanisms. Correlating morphology with chemical identity or functional behavior using a variety of innovative microscopy methods is particularly promising for guiding development of next generation catalysts, and there are also many recent examples of using AI and robotics tools to innovate and speed development. In this Perspective, advances made over the past few years in operando imaging of catalysts relevant to solar fuels will be explored, followed by an outlook on technological developments in instrumentation, sample design, and computational power that may be applied to this field.

Engage the Public in Science and Embrace Future Change with Human-Centric Stories, Art, and Imaginings

Human-centric stories that weave in real scientific data may be able to engage the public in environmental issues that do not yet directly affect them. Science fiction and artistically rendered futuristic scenarios can unleash the imagination and act as a lens to envision technological, social, and cultural aspects of transitioning to clean energy. Cultures with strong oral traditions use stories to record history, develop a shared identity, pass on environmental lessons, and prepare for future change. Through the lenses of our non-physical science disciplines (cultural anthropology and environmental sociology), we discuss challenges to communicating science, the use of narratives to illustrate ecosystem processes, and we report on a collaborative, interdisciplinary workshop and book project that is creating narratives of hope and visions for the future through inspiring art, short stories, and essays. We explore the surprising potential of 'cli-fi,' humor, games, and the research behind emotion and imagination-driven engagement. We describe methods that help people visualize their future well-being and we explore opportunities to spread those methods.

Imaging electric field with electrically neutral particles

It used to think that is impossible to determine/measure electric field inside a physically isolated volume, especially inside an electrically shielded space, because a conventional electric-field sensor can only measure electric field at the location of the sensor, and when an electric-field source is screened by conductive materials, no leakage electric field can be detected. For first time, we experimentally demonstrated that electrically neutral particles, neutrons, can be used to measure/image electric field behind a physical barrier. This work enables a new measurement capability that can visualize electric-relevant properties inside a studied sample or detection target for scientific research and engineering applications.

Flicker: A review of temporal light modulation stimulus, responses, and measures

Flicker has been an important lighting system consideration for over a century. More precise terms are temporal light modulation (TLM) as the stimulus, and responses to TLM as the unwanted visual, cognitive, or physiological consequences. As lighting technology evolved, different forms of TLM emerged, and so did responses to them. Today, some LED systems – encompassing the LED, driver, and control – can result in TLM causing severe unwanted effects, while other LED systems produce no unwanted effects at all. LED systems can deliver a much wider range of luminous waveforms than conventional lighting systems, some exhibiting very high modulation depths. More than any light source before, they can elicit perceptions of the phantom array. Direct flicker effects at modulation frequencies less than about 80 Hz and the stroboscopic effect at frequencies greater than 80 Hz are fairly well understood, but the phantom array effect needs more exploration and characterisation. This review focuses on the technology and research history that led to current metrics for quantifying TLM and human responses to TLM. Notably, visually impaired individuals may exhibit alterations in their response to TLM, but such a discussion is beyond the intent of this review. Thus, the focus is on individuals with normal visual function.

Hardening DOE R&D Software Tools for Web-based Visualization SBIR Phase I Final Report

Ubiquitous web-based visualization is essential to delivering large-scale data visualization to various stakeholders, from the scientist to the board member. These stakeholders will not tolerate a stalled application or a pop-up window asking them to wait for the processing to complete. They require a responsive and interactive visualization environment with high-quality imagery suitable for detailed analysis and boardroom presentations. At Kitware, Inc., we have accomplished web visualization to this point, leveraging state-of-the-art tools like HTML5, CSS3, SVG, Canvas, and WebGL. Solutions that leverage a combination of these technologies are necessary to handle workloads that vary significantly in data size efficiently. However, it is not always practical to move large data to the web client for visualization. Kitware's ParaView as a Service combines client-side visualization using both distributed processing and remote rendering on big data impractical to move. Existing distributed processing and remote rendering solution's interactivity is below the expectations of web-based applications. Our project examined proposed solutions to the areas outlined above in ParaView as a Service. We have investigated concurrent pipelines, streaming images, progressive rendering, and optimization of algorithms and data movement to address these concerns. For the Phase I project, we completed the proposed work plan. As a result, the project produced three prototypes of essential importance for web visualization and the ParaView as a Service community. We created a simple desktop application for an interactive streamline placement prototype, a web-based interactive streamline placement prototype, and a web-based progressive rendering utilizing raytracing prototype. These prototypes relied on the hardening of emerging software toolkits funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program (such as ParaView, VTK-m, and Mochi). We blended these components into web-based visualization prototypes that meet the industry's expectations for interactivity and responsiveness. The Phase I project had four essential focus areas: 1. Develop prototype ParaView as a Service backend server using asynchronous, non-blocking design principles. 2. Develop a prototype web application that uses the ParaView as a Service backend server for remote data visualization. 3. Implement image streaming with encoding/compression and progressive rendering capabilities in the proposed platform. 4. Evaluate the prototype developed and summarize observations, including the challenges and pitfalls of our approach. After our successful completion of Phase I, we are strongly positioned to propose a successful Phase II project.

A Prospective Design Method for Nuclear Power: The Evaluation, Requirements, and Goals Outline for Nuclear (ERGON) Method

Human factors researchers at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) have worked on projects spanning control room modernization, operator support systems, visualization design, and novel system creation. These projects demonstrated the need for an explicit design method for nuclear power. Human factors teams found a high standard in the Human Factors Engineering Program Review Model (NUREG-0711) and needed a design methodology which could be successful in gaining approval. Previous work has been synthesized as the Evaluation, Requirements, and Goals Outline for Nuclear (ERGON) method here. Design tasks are broken into four phases: Context and Orientation, Human Factors Review, Prototyping and Evaluation, Iteration and Improvement. ERGON is intended as a flexible and direct design method for many applications in nuclear power. ERGON has been vetted through collaborative research and development with nuclear utilities and as such, the ERGON method can assist utilities to achieve approval from a NUREG-0711 summative evaluation for HSI implementations.

Direct Imaging of Resonant Phonon-Magnon Coupling

Detection of phonons is critical for research on the interconversion between resonantly coupled magnons and phonons. Here we report the direct visualization of the resonant coupling of magnons and phonons by microfocused Brillouin light scattering on the Ni/Li Nb O 3 hybrid heterostructure. The static patterns of surface acoustic wave phonons, originating from the interference between the incident wave ψ 0 (A 0 , k, φ 0 ) and reflected wave ψ 1 (A 1 , - k, φ 1 ), can be modulated by magnetic field due to the magnon-phonon coupling. By analyzing the information of phonons obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy, the properties of the magnon system (Ni film), e.g., ferromagnetic resonance field and resonance linewidth, can be determined. The results provide spatially resolved information about phonon manipulation and detection in a coupled magnon-phonon system.
