Development of a Sunspot Tracking System

Large solar flares produce a significant amount of energetic particles which pose a hazard for human activity in space. In the hope of understanding flare mechanisms and thus better predicting solar flares, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) developed an experimental vector magnetograph (EXVM) polarimeter to measure the Sun's magnetic field. The EXVM will be used to perform ground-based solar observations and will provide a proof of concept for the design of a similar instrument for the Japanese Solar-B space mission. The EXVM typically operates for a period of several minutes. During this time there is image motion due to atmospheric fluctuation and telescope wind loading. To optimize the EXVM performance an image motion compensation device (sunspot tracker) is needed. The sunspot tracker consists of two parts, an image motion determination system and an image deflection system. For image motion determination a CCD or CID camera is used to digitize an image, than an algorithm is applied to determine the motion. This motion or error signal is sent to the image deflection system which moves the image back to its original location. Both of these systems are under development. Two algorithms are available for sunspot tracking which require the use of only one row and one column of image data. To implement these algorithms, two identical independent systems are being developed, one system for each axis of motion. Two CID cameras have been purchased; the data from each camera will be used to determine image motion for each direction. The error signal generated by the tracking algorithm will be sent to an image deflection system consisting of an actuator and a mirror constrained to move about one axis. Magnetostrictive actuators were chosen to move the mirror over piezoelectrics due to their larger driving force and larger range of motion. The actuator and mirror mounts are currently under development.

The effects of bandpass limiters on n-phase tracking systems

The combination of a bandpass limiter and an n(th) power tracking loop is considered. It is shown that the performance of the combination does not depend on the form of the nonlinear function used to create the n(th) harmonic signal so long as some energy in that zone is produced. Furthermore, the order in which the limiter and n(th) power nonlinearity occur is unimportant so that the results apply equally well to the n-phase Costas type of implementation of the n(th) power loops. Closed form expressions for the signal suppression factors are obtained and it is shown that the coherent and noncoherent SNR's out of the n(th) power-limiter combination can be expressed in terms of two of these suppression factors. This later point enables one to estimate the loop SNR of an n(th) power-limiter phase locked loop by simply calculating the suppression factors for n(th) and 2n(th) power loops. Finally, n(th) power phase locked loops without limiters are compared with similar loops with limiters where it is shown that the presence of the limiter can actually enhance the output SNR at moderate to large values of input SNR.

Ground Simulation of an Autonomous Satellite Rendezvous and Tracking System Using Dual Robotic Systems

A hardware-in-the-loop ground system was developed for simulating a robotic servicer spacecraft tracking a target satellite at short range. A relative navigation sensor package "Argon" is mounted on the end-effector of a Fanuc 430 manipulator, which functions as the base platform of the robotic spacecraft servicer. Machine vision algorithms estimate the pose of the target spacecraft, mounted on a Rotopod R-2000 platform, relay the solution to a simulation of the servicer spacecraft running in "Freespace", which performs guidance, navigation and control functions, integrates dynamics, and issues motion commands to a Fanuc platform controller so that it tracks the simulated servicer spacecraft. Results will be reviewed for several satellite motion scenarios at different ranges. Key words: robotics, satellite, servicing, guidance, navigation, tracking, control, docking.

An ice-motion tracking system at the Alaska SAR facility

An operational system for extracting ice-motion information from synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery is being developed as part of the Alaska SAR Facility. This geophysical processing system (GPS) will derive ice-motion information by automated analysis of image sequences acquired by radars on the European ERS-1, Japanese ERS-1, and Canadian RADARSAT remote sensing satellites. The algorithm consists of a novel combination of feature-based and area-based techniques for the tracking of ice floes that undergo translation and rotation between imaging passes. The system performs automatic selection of the image pairs for input to the matching routines using an ice-motion estimator. It is designed to have a daily throughput of ten image pairs. A description is given of the GPS system, including an overview of the ice-motion-tracking algorithm, the system architecture, and the ice-motion products that will be available for distribution to geophysical data users.

Integrated laser/radar satellite ranging and tracking system

A laser satellite ranging system that is mounted upon and integrated with a microwave tracking radar is reported. The 1-pulse/sec ruby laser transmitter is attached directly to the radar's elevation axis and radiates through a new opening in the radar's parabolic dish. The laser photomultiplier tube receiver utilizes the radar's existing 20-cm diam f/11 boresight telescope and observes through a similar symmetrically located opening in the dish. The laser system possesses separate ranging system electronics but shares the radar's timing, computer, and data handling/recording systems. The basic concept of the laser/radar is outlined together with a listing of the numerous advantages over present singular laser range-finding systems. The developmental laser hardware is described along with preliminary range-finding results and expectations.

The Space Shuttle Program is briefly described, and the major program milestones (first horizontal flight, first vertical flight, and initial operational capability) extending over a period from 1976 to 1978 are reviewed. The communications and tracking requirements, and the system developed to meet them, are discussed for the ascent, on-orbit, reentry, and landing phases of a Shuttle mission.

Polarization tracking system for satellites.

The basic problem is to develop a 4 GHz polarization follower which tracks a linear vector transmitted by the satellite, with high precision. Applications include spacecraft attitude control, polarization following for linearly polarized communication receiving antennas, and Faraday rotation measurements. Considered primary information, an angular precision of better than 0.5 deg has been demonstrated at 4 GHz. Both theoretical and experimental aspects are discussed.

Real-time optical multiple object recognition and tracking system and method

The invention relates to an apparatus and associated methods for the optical recognition and tracking of multiple objects in real time. Multiple point spatial filters are employed that pre-define the objects to be recognized at run-time. The system takes the basic technology of a Vander Lugt filter and adds a hololens. The technique replaces time, space and cost-intensive digital techniques. In place of multiple objects, the system can also recognize multiple orientations of a single object. This later capability has potential for space applications where space and weight are at a premium.

Effect of Torque-Tube Parameters on Rear-Irradiance and Rear-Shading Loss for Bifacial PV Performance on Single-Axis Tracking Systems

The emergence of cost-competitive bifacial PV modules has raised the question of the additional value of bifacial 1-axis tracking arrays, in particular when considering rear-irradiance losses from the tracker system itself. In this work, the effect of different geometries and materials of torque tubes is evaluated through ray-trace simulations and found to cause rear irradiance shading factors between 2% to 8% for systems without gap between the modules in 2-UP configuration. Inclusion of a gap between the modules can offset the shading factor. Electrical mismatch is also evaluated for the various configurations, and a methodology to apply shading factor and electrical mismatch loss to rear irradiance from the calculated loss in DC power, which averages 1% for the systems explored here, is proposed.

A simple fuzzy logic real-time camera tracking system

A fuzzy logic control of camera pan and tilt has been implemented to provide real-time camera tracking of a moving object. The user clicks a mouse button to identify the object that is to be tracked. A rapid centroid estimation algorithm is used to estimate the location of the moving object, and based on simple fuzzy membership functions, fuzzy x and y values are input into a six-rule fuzzy logic rule base. The output of this system is de-fuzzified to provide pan and tilt velocities required to keep the image of the object approximately centered in the camera field of view.
