A Cold Moderator For Sub-Thermal Neutron Flux Enhancement at the RPI-LINAC

The importance of high-quality thermal neutron scattering kernels coupled with a lack of accurate sub-thermal total cross section data prompted researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) to design a cold moderation system to enhance sub-thermal neutron flux (defined as flux below 5 meV), for nuclear data measurements at the RPI Gaerttner LINAC facility. Using a series of neutronic and heat transfer simulations obtained with MCNP and COMSOL, an optimized final design was produced. The final design exceeded current target sub-thermal neutron producing capabilities by a factor of 8 in the sub-thermal region and is easily configurable with existing neutron producing targets.

Unitarity cuts of the worldsheet

We compute the imaginary parts of genus-one string scattering amplitudes. Following Witten’s i\varepsilon i ε prescription for the integration contour on the moduli space of worldsheets, we give a general algorithm for computing unitarity cuts of the annulus, Möbius strip, and torus topologies exactly in \alpha' α ′ . With the help of tropical analysis, we show how the intricate pattern of thresholds (normal and anomalous) opening up arises from the worldsheet computation. The result is a manifestly-convergent representation of the imaginary parts of amplitudes, which has the analytic form expected from Cutkosky rules in field theory, but bypasses the need for performing laborious sums over the intermediate states. We use this representation to study various physical aspects of string amplitudes, including their behavior in the (s,t) ( s , t ) plane, exponential suppression, decay widths of massive strings, total cross section, and low-energy expansions. We find that planar annulus amplitudes exhibit a version of low-spin dominance: at any finite energy, only a finite number of low partial-wave spins give an appreciable contribution to the imaginary part.

Exotic Meson Photoproduction at GlueX – Search for the hybrid candidate Y

Understanding the hadron spectrum is one of the primary goals of non-perturbative QCD. Many predictions have experimentally been confirmed, others still remain under experimental investigation. Of particular interest is how gluonic excitations give rise to states with constituent glue. One class of such states are hybrid mesons that are predicted by theoretical models and Lattice QCD calculations. Searching for and understanding the nature of these states is a primary physics goal of the GlueX experiment at the CEBAF accelerator at Jefferson Lab. A search for a JPC = 1-- hybrid meson candidate, the Y (2175), in phi(1020)pi+pi+ and phi(1020)f0(980) channels in photoproduction on a proton target has been conducted. A first measurement of non-resonant phi(1020)pi+pi+ and phi(1020)f0(980) total cross sections in photoproduction has been performed. An upper limit on the resonance production cross section for the Y (2175) -> phi(1020)pi+pi+ and Y (2175) -> phi(1020)f0(980) channels are estimated. Since the analysis essentially depends on the quality of the charged kaon identification, also an optimization of particle identification through an improvement of the energy loss estimation in the CDC by a truncated mean method has been investigated.

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering: Terrestrial and astrophysical applications

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) is a process in which neutrinos scatter on a nucleus which acts as a single particle. Though the total cross section is large by neutrino standards, CE$\nu$NS has long proven difficult to detect, since the deposited energy into the nucleus is $\sim$ keV. In 2017, the COHERENT collaboration announced the detection of CE$\nu$NS using a stopped-pion source with CsI detectors, followed up the detection of CE$\nu$NS using an Ar target. The detection of CE$\nu$NS has spawned a flurry of activities in high-energy physics, inspiring new constraints on beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics, and new experimental methods. The CE$\nu$NS process has important implications for not only high-energy physics, but also astrophysics, nuclear physics, and beyond. This whitepaper discusses the scientific importance of CE$\nu$NS, highlighting how present experiments such as COHERENT are informing theory, and also how future experiments will provide a wealth of information across the aforementioned fields of physics.

Neutron Capture and Transmission Measurements of 54 Fe at the RPI LINAC [Slides]

Transmission and capture measurements provide a wholistic set of experimental data to start resonance evaluation on 54 Fe. Analysis thus far supports that changes are needed in 54 Fe evaluation. Major accomplishments include the completion of radiative capture measurements of 54 Fe and the completion of total cross section measurements of 54 Fe. Future work includes the completion of data analysis relevant to capture and transmission measurements (May 2022), complete fitting of new resonance parameters to 54 Fe data (early 2023), and completion of all required deliverables for graduation (May 2023).

Low-Energy Electron Elastic Collisions with Actinide Atoms Am, Cm, Bk, Es, No and Lr: Negative-Ion Formation

The rigorous Regge-pole method is used to investigate negative-ion formation in actinide atoms through electron elastic total cross sections (TCSs) calculation. The TCSs are found to be characterized generally by negative-ion formations, shape resonances and Ramsauer-Townsend(R-T) minima, and they exhibit both atomic and fullerene molecular behavior near the threshold. Additionally, a polarization-induced metastable cross section with a deep R-T minimum is identified near the threshold in the Am, Cm and Bk TCSs, which flips over to a shape resonance appearing very close to the threshold in the TCSs for Es, No and Lr. We attribute these new manifestations to size effects and orbital collapse significantly impacting the polarization interaction. From the TCSs unambiguous and reliable ground, metastable and excited states negative-ion binding energies (BEs) for Am−, Cm−, Bk−, Es−, No− and Lr− anions formed during the collisions are extracted and compared with existing electron affinities (EAs) of the atoms. The novelty of the Regge-pole approach is in the extraction of the negative-ion BEs from the TCSs. We conclude that the existing theoretical EAs of the actinide atoms and the recently measured EA of Th correspond to excited anionic BEs.

On the Statistical Uncertainty of Monte Carlo-Calculated Scattering Sensitivities

Sensitivity coefficients calculated with Monte Carlo codes are widely used for nuclear data uncertainty quantification in the modeling and simulation of complex 3D reactor systems. This study systematically compares sensitivity coefficients and associated statistical uncertainties for the multiplication factor and fuel temperature reactivity across multiple Monte Carlo codes (SCALE/KENO, SCALE/Shift, MCNP, and Serpent) using simple models representing light-water reactors and advanced reactor concepts. For multiplication factor sensitivities, statistical uncertainties are generally acceptable, although scattering sensitivities show significantly larger statistical uncertainties than, for example, fission and capture reactions. Fuel temperature reactivity sensitivities show significantly larger statistical uncertainties across all reactions. Elastic scattering sensitivities are the most problematic: all Monte Carlo codes fail to resolve energy-dependent coefficients, and they produce dramatically different energy-collapsed values. Critically, the use of these sensitivity coefficients in nuclear data uncertainty propagation leads to reduced statistical uncertainties in individual uncertainty contributions. This can lead to the masking of unusable sensitivity coefficients and producing misleading uncertainty results. The findings of this study show that new or enhanced methods are needed to improve Monte Carlo elastic scattering sensitivity calculations. Additionally, this study shows the relevance of verifying sensitivity coefficients through direct perturbation calculations for individual nuclide reactions, instead of only for total cross sections as commonly done.

Impulsive model for reactive collisions

A simple classical mechanical model of the reactive scattering of a structureless atom A and a quasi-diatomic BC is developed which takes full advantage of energy, linear and angular momentum conservation relations but introduces a minimum of further assumptions. These are as follows: (1) the vibrational degree of freedom of the reactant (BC) and product (AB) molecules is suppressed, so the change in vibrational energy is simply a parameter; (2) straight-line trajectories are assumed outside of a reaction shell; (3) within this zone, momentum transfer occurs impulsively (essentially instantaneously) following mass transfer; (4) the impulse, which may be either positive or negative, is directed along the BC axis, which may, however, assume all orientations with respect to the incident relative velocity. The model yields differential and total cross sections and product rotational energy distributions for a given collision exoergicity Q, or for any known distribution over Q. Numerical results are presented for several prototype reactions whose dynamics have been well-studied.

Cosmic gamma-rays from pion decay

The production of gamma rays from the decay of neutral pions produced in interstellar cosmic ray interactions was studied, limited to the total gamma ray intensity. Using the upper-limit gamma ray production, an upper-limit is obtained consistent with that obtained by Kraushaar. It is shown that whatever the shape of the gamma ray spectrum, the normalization has to be consistent with data of the total cross sections.

Electron-impact excitation of the 3S0 and 5S0 states of atomic oxygen

The conditions of electron-impact excitation in flowing oxygen downstream from a discharge are reinterpreted. It is shown that total oxygen mass flow is not conserved as the discharge is turned on and off, even though the inlet flow rate remains constant. The total amount of gas is diminished when the discharge is turned on, apparently due to collection of atomic oxygen by the system walls. A revised total cross section is reported for the excitation of 1304-A radiation.
