Magnetotransport properties of the topological nodal-line semimetal CaCdSn

Topological nodal-line semimetals support protected band crossings, which form nodal lines or nodal loops between the valence and conduction bands and exhibit novel transport phenomena. Here we address the topological state of the nodal-line semimetal candidate material CaCdSn, and report magnetotransport properties of its single crystals grown by the self-flux method. In this work, our first-principles calculations show that the electronic structure of CaCdSn harbors a single nodal loop around the Γ point in the absence of spin-orbit coupling effects. The nodal crossings in CaCdSn are found to lie above the Fermi level and yield a Fermi surface that consists of both electron and hole pockets. CaCdSn exhibits high mobility (μ ≈ 3.44 × 10 4 cm 2 V –1 s –1 ) and displays a field-induced metal-semiconductor-like crossover with a plateau in resistivity at low temperature. We observe an extremely large and quasilinear nonsaturating transverse as well as longitudinal magnetoresistance (MR) at low temperatures (≈ 7.44 × 10 3 % and ≈ 1.71 × 10 3 %, respectively, at 4 K). We also briefly discuss possible reasons behind such a large quasilinear magnetoresistance and its connection with the nontrivial band structure of CaCdSn.

Influence of Standard Image Processing of 3D X-ray Microscopy on Morphology, Topology and Effective Properties

Estimating porous media properties is a vital component of geosciences and the physics of porous media. Until now, imaging techniques have focused on methodologies to match image-derived flows or geomechanical parameters with experimentally identified values. Less emphasis has been placed on the compromise between image processing techniques and the consequences on topological and morphological characteristics and on computed properties such as permeability. The effects of some of the most popular image processing techniques (filtering and segmentation) available in open source on 3D X-ray Microscopy (micro-XRM) images are qualitatively and quantitatively discussed. We observe the impacts of various filters such as erosion-dilation and compare the efficiency of Otsu’s method of thresholding and the machine-learning-based software Ilastik for segmentation.

Fermi surface topology and magnetotransport properties of superconducting Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2

Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is a rare realization of a superconducting metal with a non-zero topological invariant. Here, in this study, we report the growth of high-quality single crystals of layered Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 with a superconducting transition at T c ≈ 0.80 K and upper critical fields of ~10 mT and ~5 mT for the in plane and out-of-plane directions, respectively. Our density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal three pairs of doubly degenerate bands crossing the Fermi level all displaying clear three dimensional dispersion consistent with the overall low electronic anisotropy (<2). The multiband electronic nature of Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 is evident in magneto-transport measurements, yielding a sign changing Hall resistivity at low temperatures. The magnetoresistance is non-saturating and follows Kohler’s scaling rule. We interpret the magneto-transport data in terms of open orbits that are revealed in the DFT calculated Fermi surface. de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillation measurements using torque magnetometry on single crystals yield four frequencies for out-of-plane fields: F α = (150 ± 26) T, F β = (293 ± 10) T, F γ = (375 ± 20) T and F η = (1017 ± 12) T, with the low frequency dominating the spectrum. Through the measurement of angular dependent dHvA oscillations and DFT calculations we identify the F α frequency with an approximately ellipsoidal electron pocket centered on the L 2 point of the Brillouin zone. Lifshitz-Kosevich analysis of the dHvA oscillations reveals a small cyclotron effective mass m* = (0.11 ± 0.02)m 0 and a nontrivial Berry phase for the dominant orbit. The presence of nontrivial topology in a bulk superconductor positions Pd 3 Bi 2 Se 2 as a potential candidate for exploring topological superconductivity.

Topological and magnetic properties of the interacting Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model

We investigate the effects of electronic correlations on the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model using the real-space density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. We introduce a method to probe topological phase transitions in systems with strong correlations using DMRG, substantiated by an unsupervised machine learning methodology that analyzes the orbital structure of the real-space edges. Including the full multi-orbital Hubbard interaction term, we construct a phase diagram as a function of a gap parameter (m) and the Hubbard interaction strength (U) via exact DMRG simulations on N×4 cylinders. Our analysis confirms that the topological phase persists in the presence of interactions, consistent with previous studies, but it also reveals an intriguing phase transition from a paramagnetic to a stripey antiferromagnetic topological insulator. The combination of the magnetic structure factor, strength of magnetic moments, and the orbitally resolved density, provides real-space information on both topology and magnetism in a strongly correlated system.

Correlations between Molecular Structure, Solvation Topology, and Transport Properties of Aqueous Organic Flow Battery Electrolyte Solutions

Aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) are considered promising technologies for storing energy generated from renewable resources. However, designing organic electrolyte molecules is limited by gaps between fundamental understanding of coupling between solvation structure and dynamics, and macroscopic transport properties like viscosity. Herein, we used molecular dynamics simulations to understand correlations between ionic molecular structures, ion clustering, and transport properties in 2,3-dihydrophenazine (2,3-DHP), a promising AORFB anolyte. We show that experimentally measured viscosity can be reproduced from simulations at relevant concentrations and that the asymmetric structure of 2,3-DHP leads to unique inhomogeneity in the solvation topology. However, order parameters and metrics need to be developed for better correlations over spatiotemporal scales, with careful consideration of the inhomogeneity of organic anolyte molecules. In conclusion, we show that the increased size and asymmetry of the anolyte leads to breakdown of assumptions within methods for determining ion transport mechanisms previously developed for Li-ion batteries.

Synthesis, Magnetic Properties, and Electronic Structure of Magnetic Topological Insulator MnBi 2 Se 4

The intrinsic magnetic topological insulators MnBi 2 Te 4 and MnBi 2 Se 4 support novel topological states related to symmetry breaking by magnetic order. Unlike MnBi 2 Te 4 , the study of MnBi 2 Se 4 has been inhibited by the lack of bulk crystals, as the van der Waals (vdW) crystal is not the thermodynamic equilibrium phase. In this study, we report the layer-by-layer synthesis of vdW MnBi 2 Se 4 crystals using nonequilibrium molecular beam epitaxy. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy identify a well-ordered vdW crystal with septuple-layer base units. The magnetic properties agree with the predicted layered antiferromagnetic ordering but disagree with its predicted out-of-plane orientation. Instead, our samples exhibit an easy-plane anisotropy, which is explained by including dipole–dipole interactions. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals the gapless Dirac-like surface state, which demonstrates that MnBi 2 Se 4 is a topological insulator above the magnetic-ordering temperature. These studies show that MnBi 2 Se 4 is a promising candidate for exploring rich topological phases of layered antiferromagnetic topological insulators.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the topological semimetal candidate NdSbTe

ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS family, Ln SbTe ( L n = lanthanide rare - earth ) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln . Here we report the single-crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored Ln SbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known Ln SbTe , but exhibits distinct enhanced electronic correlations characterized by large a Sommerfeld coefficient of 115 mJ / mol K 2 , which is the highest among the known Ln SbTe compounds. Furthermore, our transport studies have revealed the coupling with magnetism and signatures of Kondo localization. All these findings establish NdSbTe as a platform for observing phenomena arising from the interplay between magnetism, topology, and electron correlations.

Topological nanophotonics for photoluminescence control

Rare-earth-doped nanocrystals are emerging light sources that can produce tunable emissions in colours and lifetimes, which has been typically achieved in chemistry and material science. However, one important optical challenge – polarization of photoluminescence – remains largely out of control by chemistry methods. Control over photoluminescence polarization can be gained via coupling of emitters to resonant nanostructures such as optical antennas and metasurfaces. However, the resulting polarization is typically sensitive to position disorder of emitters, which is difficult to mitigate. Recently, new classes of disorder-immune optical systems have been explored within the framework of topological photonics. Here we explore disorder-robust topological arrays of Mie-resonant nanoparticles for polarization control of photoluminescence of nanocrystals. We demonstrate polarized emission from rare-earth-doped nanocrystals governed by photonic topological edge states supported by zigzag arrays of dielectric resonators. We verify the topological origin of polarized photoluminescence by comparing emission from nanoparticles coupled to topologically trivial and nontrivial arrays of nanoresonators. We expect that our results may open a new direction in the study of topology-enable emission properties of topological edge states in many photonic systems.

Quantum Phase Engineering of Two-Dimensional Post-Transition Metals by Substrates: Toward a Room-Temperature Quantum Anomalous Hall Insulator

In this work, we propose a new strategy to engineer topological and magnetic properties of two-dimensional (2D) hexagonal lattices consisting of post-transition metals. Our first-principles calculations demonstrate that substrates serve as templates to form 2D lattices with high thermodynamic stability, where their topological properties as well as magnetic properties sensitively change as a function of lattice constants, i.e., the system undergoes a first-order phase transition from nonmagnetic to ferromagnetic state above a critical lattice constant. Consequently, substrates can be used to explore versatile magnetic, electronic, and quantum topological properties. We establish phase diagrams of versatile quantum phases in terms of exchange coupling and spin–orbit coupling effectively tuned by the lattice constants. We further reveal the first room-temperature quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, i.e., Sn on 2√3 × 2√3 graphane is a QAH insulator with a large spin–orbit coupling gap of ~0.2 eV and a Curie temperature of ~380 K by using the 2D anisotropic Heisenberg model.

Structural Amorphization-Induced Topological Order

Electronic properties of crystals are inherently pertained to crystalline symmetry, so that amorphization that lowers and breaks symmetry is detrimental. One important crystalline property is electron band topology which is known to be weakened and destroyed by structural disorder. Here, we report a counterintuitive theoretical discovery that atomic structural disorder by amorphization can in fact induce electronic order of topology in an otherwise topologically trivial crystal. The resulting nontrivial topology is characterized by a nonzero spin Bott index, associated with robust topological edge states and quantized conductance. Further, the underlying topological phase transition (TPT) from a trivial crystal to a topological amorphous is analyzed by mapping out a phase diagram in the degree of structural disorder using an effective medium theory. The atomic disorder is revealed to induce topological order by renormalizing the spectral gap toward nontriviality near the phase boundary. As a concrete example, we further show such TPT in amorphous stanane by first-principles calculations. Our findings point to possible observation of an electronic ordering transition accompanied by a structural disorder transition.

Ultrafast optical control of surface and bulk magnetism in magnetic topological insulator/antiferromagnet heterostructure

Abstract Optical control of the magnetic properties in topological insulator systems is an important step in applying these materials in ultrafast optoelectronic and spintronic schemes. In this work, we report the experimental observation of photo-induced magnetization dynamics in the magnetically doped topological insulator (MTI)/antiferromagnet (AFM) heterostructure composed of Cr-(Bi,Sb) 2 Te 3 /CrSb. Through proximity coupling to the AFM layer, the MTI displays a dramatically enhanced magnetism, with robust perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. When subjected to intense laser irradiation, both surface and bulk magnetism of the MTI are weakened by laser-induced heating of the lattice, however, at the surface, the deleterious heat effect is compensated by the strengthening of Dirac-hole-mediated exchange coupling as demonstrated by an unconventional pump-fluence-dependent exchange-bias effect. Through theoretical analyses, the sizes of exchange coupling energies are estimated in the MTI/AFM bilayer structure. The fundamentally different mechanisms supporting the surface and bulk magnetic order in MTIs allow a novel and distinctive photo-induced transient magnetic state with antiparallel spin configuration, which broadens the understanding of the magnetization dynamics of MTIs under ultrashort and intense optical excitation.

First-principles investigation of elastic, vibrational, and thermodynamic properties of kagome metals CsM 3 Te 5 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf)

Kagome metals are a unique class of quantum materials characterized by their distinct atomic lattice arrangement, featuring interlocking triangles and expansive hexagonal voids. These lattice structures impart exotic properties, including superconductivity, interaction-driven topological many-body phenomena, and magnetism, among others. The kagome metal CsM 3 ⁢Te 5 (where M = Ti, Zr, or Hf) exhibits both superconductivity and nontrivial topological electronic properties, offering a promising platform for exploring topological superconductivity. This study employs first-principles density functional theory calculations to systematically analyze the elastic, mechanical, vibrational, thermodynamic, and electronic properties of CsM 3 ⁢Te 5 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf). Our calculations reveal that the studied compounds—CsTi 3 ⁢Te 5 , CsZr 3 ⁢Te 5 , and CsHf 3 ⁢Te 5 —are ductile metals with elastic properties akin to the hexagonal Bi and Sb, with average elastic constants, including a bulk modulus of 27 GPa, a shear modulus of 11 GPa, and Young's modulus of 29 GPa. We observe peculiar dispersionless, flat, phonon branches in the vibrational spectra of these metals. Additionally, we thoroughly analyze the symmetries of the zone-center phonon eigenvectors and predict vibrational fingerprints of the Raman- and infrared-active phonon modes. The analysis of thermodynamic properties reveals the Einstein temperature for CsTi 3 ⁢Te 5 , CsZr 3 ⁢Te 5 , and CsHf 3 ⁢Te 5 to be 66, 54, and 53 K, respectively. Our orbital-decomposed electronic structure calculations reveal significant in-plane steric interactions and multiple Dirac band crossings near the Fermi level. We further investigate the role of spin-orbit coupling effect on the studied properties. Furthermore, this theoretical investigation sheds light on the intriguing quantum behavior of kagome metals.

Thermal and thermoelectric properties of an antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4

The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFMTI) in MnBi 2 Te 4 has attracted intense attention, most of which lies in its electrical properties. Here in this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFMTI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi 2 Te 4 exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with nonzero Berry curvature of the field-induced canted antiferromagnetic state.

Low-temperature magnetic crossover in the topological kagome magnet TbMn 6 Sn 6

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and materials science, of which kagome magnets appear as a highly promising platform. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the recently identified topological kagome system TbMn6 S n 6 using muon spin rotation, combined with local field analysis and neutron diffraction. Our studies identify an out-of-plane ferrimagnetic structure with slow magnetic fluctuations which exhibit a critical slowing down below $T^{*}_{C1}$ ≃ 120 K and finally freeze into static patches with ideal out-of-plane order below T C1 ≃ 20 K. We further show that hydrostatic pressure of 2.1 GPa stabilises the static out-of-plane topological ferrimagnetic ground state in the whole volume of the sample. Therefore the exciting perspective arises of a magnetically-induced topological system whose magnetism can be controlled through external parameters. The present results will stimulate theoretical investigations to obtain a microscopic understanding of the relation between the low-temperature volume-wise magnetic evolution of the static c-axis ferrimagnetic patches and the topological electronic properties in TbMn 6 Sn 6 .

Direct link between disorder and magnetoresistance in topological semimetals

The extent to which disorder influences the properties of topological semimetals is relevant to the understanding of topological states and their use in practical applications. Using molecular beam epitaxy, we achieve systematic control of point defect concentrations in the prototypical Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 to gain insight into the role of disorder on electron transport behavior. Using the guiding center diffusion model for linear magnetoresistance, we extract point defect densities as a function of deposition conditions. We find that reducing cadmium defect concentrations by an order of magnitude results in an 2x increase in the magnetoresistance from 450% to 900%. This finding yields important information in the quest to identify the origin of linear magnetoresistance in a wider range of materials.

Perspective on Some Recent and Future Developments in Casimir Interactions

Here, we present a critical review of recent developments in Casimir physics motivated by discoveries of novel materials. Specifically, topologically nontrivial properties of the graphene family, Chern and topological insulators, and Weyl semimetals have diverse manifestations in the distance dependence, presence of fundamental constants, magnitude, and sign of the Casimir interaction. Limited studies of the role of nonlinear optical properties in the interaction are also reviewed. We show that, since many new materials have greatly enhanced the nonlinear optical response, new efficient pathways for investigation of the characteristic regimes of the Casimir force need to be explored, which are expected to lead to new discoveries. Recent progress in the dynamical Casimir effect is also reviewed and we argue that nonlinear media can open up new directions in this field as well.

Kerr, Faraday, and magnetoelectric effects in MnBi 2 Te 4 thin films

The topological magnetoelectric effect (TME) is a characteristic property of topological insulators. In this paper, we use a simplified coupled-Dirac-cone electronic structure model to theoretically evaluate the THz and far infrared Kerr and Faraday responses of thin films of MnBi 2 ⁢Te 4 with up to N = 10 septuple layers with the goal of clarifying the relationship between these convenient magnetooptical observables and the TME. Here we find that for even N, the linear Kerr and Faraday responses to an electric field vanish in the low-frequency limit, even though the magnetoelectric response is large and approximately quantized.
