Government-to-government cooperation in space station development

A memoranda of understanding was recently signed between the United States (NASA) and three international Space Station partners - Canada, European Space Agency (ESA), and Japan. The international partners are performing parallel Phase B preliminary design studies, concurrent with the U.S., on their proposed elements/systems for possible integration and operation with the U.S. Space Station System complex. During the 21-month Space Station Phase B study, a large amount of technical interface data will have to be transferred between the U.S. and the international partners. Scheduled bilateral technical coordination meetings will also be held. The coordination and large number of interfaces required to integrate the international requirements into the Space Station require a clean interface management organizational structure and operation procedures to accomplish the integration task. The international coordination management organizational structure, management tools, and communications network are discussed including the proposed international elements/systems being studied by the international partners.

Data management in pattern recognition and image processing systems

Data management considerations are important to any system which handles large volumes of data or where the manipulation of data is technically sophisticated. A particular problem is the introduction of image-formatted files into the mainstream of data processing application. This report describes a comprehensive system for the manipulation of image, tabular, and graphical data sets which involve conversions between the various data types. A key characteristic is the use of image processing technology to accomplish data management tasks. Because of this, the term 'image-based information system' has been adopted.

Effect of Fatigue on the Capacity and Performance of Structural Concrete

The goal of this project was to enhance the understanding of the fatigue behavior of concrete structures for the purpose of improving the design and assessment of towers and foundations that support wind turbines, which must endure repeated loadings from wind, waves, operations, and other dynamic effects that cause material degradation. This was achieved through physical experiments, a review of the technical literature, and collaboration with experts in key subject areas. The project produced a comprehensive database of publicly available fatigue data, several technical papers presenting the research findings, and two Technotes to be published by the American Concrete Institute that advance best practices in fatigue testing and enable the development of concrete-specific fatigue (S-N) (stress-life) curves. These contributions are expected to enhance the durability and cost-effectiveness of wind turbine support structures.

Bridging the Gap for Powering Data Centers

The rapid expansion of data centers, primarily driven by artificial intelligence, is outpacing the adaptability of the U.S. electric grid. This report, developed by Idaho National Laboratory (INL) , presents a gap analysis of some of the infrastructure challenges associated with large-scale data center deployment. Drawing from a national workshop hosted by INL in October of 2025, the report synthesizes stakeholder insights, survey data, and technical discussions to identify critical barriers and research needs. Key findings highlight the growing preference for behind-the-meter generation, the perceived inadequacy of legacy interconnection processes, and the urgent need for improved coordination between utilities, regulators, and data center developers. Environmental concerns such as water use and noise pollution, as well as economic constraints like equipment lead times and cost allocation, are also explored. The report outlines national lab capabilities in modeling, simulation, and technical assistance, and proposes targeted R&D priorities to support resilient, scalable, and efficient integration of data centers into the grid.

Methods and means used in programming intelligent searches of technical documents

In order to meet the data research requirements of the Safety, Reliability & Quality Assurance activities at Kennedy Space Center (KSC), a new computer search method for technical data documents was developed. By their very nature, technical documents are partially encrypted because of the author's use of acronyms, abbreviations, and shortcut notations. This problem of computerized searching is compounded at KSC by the volume of documentation that is produced during normal Space Shuttle operations. The Centralized Document Database (CDD) is designed to solve this problem. It provides a common interface to an unlimited number of files of various sizes, with the capability to perform any diversified types and levels of data searches. The heart of the CDD is the nature and capability of its search algorithms. The most complex form of search that the program uses is with the use of a domain-specific database of acronyms, abbreviations, synonyms, and word frequency tables. This database, along with basic sentence parsing, is used to convert a request for information into a relational network. This network is used as a filter on the original document file to determine the most likely locations for the data requested. This type of search will locate information that traditional techniques, (i.e., Boolean structured key-word searching), would not find.

Observations of the Rotational Transitions of OH from the Orion Molecular Cold

The goal of the observations carried out under this grant was to use several transitions of OH to infer conditions within a 1-arcminute region centered on Orion-KL. OH was selected as a diagnostic because: (1) it was predicted to be sufficiently abundant to be detectable by the KAO spectrometers; (2) there exist a number of transitions in the far- infrared free from atmospheric interference at airplane altitudes; and (3) these transitions are sensitive to a range of collisional and radiative excitation conditions believed to apply toward Orion-KL These observations were carried out as a Guest Investigator in collaboration with the Townes and Houck spectrometer groups. Though not every flight series resulted in usable data -due to technical difficulties with instrumentation - sufficient data was obtained to yield a clear picture of the source of the OH emission in Orion-KL.

Tug fleet and ground operations schedules and controls. Volume 2: part 1

This Tug Fleet and Ground Operations Schedules and Controls Study addresses both ground operational data and technical requirements that span the Tug planning phase and operations phase. A similar study covering mission operations (by others) provides the complimentary flight operations details. The two studies provide the planning data requirements, resource allocation, and control milestones for supporting the requirements of the STS program. This Tug Fleet and Ground Operations Schedules and Controls Study incorporates the basic ground operations requirements and concepts provided by previous studies with the interrelationships of the planning, IUS transition, and Tug fleet operations phases. The interrelationships of these phases were studied as a system to optimize overall program benefits and minimize operational risk factors.

Radioisotope production at the Spallation Neutron Source: Design concept of isotope production target

Upon completion of the Second Target Station (STS) Project in the mid 2030s, the Spallation Neutron Source accelerator at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will deliver a 2.7 MW proton beam to the neutron production targets. In the post-STS phase, the accelerator will have a reserve beam power capacity of at least 100 kW beyond what the two neutron production targets will receive, which could potentially be ramped up to 300 kW. In this paper, a design concept for a radioisotope production target that could utilize 250 kW of the reserve beam power capacity is presented. The target consists of thorium discs encapsulated in 316L austenitic steel shells that are cooled by water. The estimated post-irradiation activity of Ac-225 and Ra-225, critical medical radioisotopes used in targeted alpha therapy cancer treatment, is calculated at the end of bombardment after a 14 day long irradiation time. Thermal and structural analyses are performed on the basis of calculated nuclear heating data. The technical feasibility of a high-power target under a 250-kW beam load with an extremely low duty factor of $3.5\cdot 10^{-6}$ is presented from thermal, structural and fatigue lifetime perspectives.
