Access to Perfluorometallacyclopentane Complexes of Cobalt through the [(MeCN) 4 Co(C 4 F 8 )][PF 6 ] Precursor

Here, the acetonitrile ligands in [(MeCN) 4 Co(C 4 F 8 )][PF 6 ] were found to be labile toward ligand substitution reactions, allowing for the preparation of [(MeCN)(tpy)Co(C 4 F 8 )][PF 6 ], [(tpy)CoBr(C 4 F 8 )], [(bpy) 2 Co(C 4 F 8 )][PF 6 ], and [(cis-κ 2 -pym-PPh 2 ) 2 Co(C 4 F 8 )][PF 6 ] (tpy = 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, and pym-PPh 2 = diphenyl(2-pyrimidyl)phosphine). All of the aforementioned complexes have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. Additionally, an improved procedure for the preparation of [(MeCN) 4 Co(C 4 F 8 )][X] (X = PF 6 or BF 4 ) is reported.

Potentiodynamics of the Zinc and Proton Storage in Disordered Sodium Vanadate for Aqueous Zn-Ion Batteries

A rechargeable Zn-ion battery is a promising aqueous system, where coinsertion of Zn 2+ and H + could address the obstacles of the sluggish ionic transport in cathode materials imposed by multivalent battery chemistry. However, there is a lack of fundamental understanding of this dual-ion transport, especially the potentiodynamics of the storage process. Here, a quantitative analysis of Zn 2+ and H + transport in a disordered sodium vanadate (NaV 3 O 8 ) cathode material has been reported. Collectively, synchrotron X-ray analysis shows that both Zn 2+ and H + storages follow an intercalation storage mechanism in NaV 3 O 8 and proceed in a sequential manner, where intercalations of 0.26 Zn 2+ followed by 0.24 H + per vanadium atom occur during discharging, while reverse dynamics happens during charging. We find that such a unique and synergistic dual-ion sequential storage favors a high capacity (265 mA h g –1 ) and an energy density (221 W h kg –1 ) based on the NaV 3 O 8 cathode and a great cycling life (a capacity retention of 78% after 2000 cycles) in Zn/NaV 3 O 8 full cells.

High-Capacity Aqueous Storage in Vanadate Cathodes Promoted by the Zn-Ion and Proton Intercalation and Conversion–Intercalation of Vanadyl Ions

Aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries in stationary storage. However, limited storage capacity and cyclic life impede their large-scale implementation. In this study, we report reversible electrochemical insertion of multi-ions into sodium vanadate (NaV 3 O 8 ) cathode materials for AZIBs, achieving a maximum storage capacity of 450 mAh g –1 at 0.05 A g –1 and a capacity retention of 82% after 500 cycles at 0.4 A g –1 . In addition to Zn 2+ and H + insertion, in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) collectively provide explicit evidence on vanadyl ions (VO 2+ ) conversion–intercalation at the NaV 3 O 8 cathode, showing the deintercalation of VO 2+ from NaV 3 O 8 and the consequent conversion of VO 2+ into V 2 O 5 on charging, and vice versa on discharging. Our study is the first to report on the cation conversion–intercalation mechanism in AZIBs. This reversible multi-ion storage mechanism provides a design principle for developing high-capacity aqueous electrode materials by engaging both the intercalation and conversion of charge carriers.

Plasmonic Terahertz Devices and Sensors Based on Carbon Electronics

Tunable terahertz (THz) photonic devices are imperative in a wide range of applications ranging from THz signal modulation to molecular sensing. One of the currently prevailing methods is based on arrays of metallic or dielectric resonators integrated with functional materials in response to an external stimulus, in which for the purpose of sensing the external stimuli may introduce inadvertent undesirable effects into the target samples to be measured. Here we developed an alternative approach by postprocessing nanothickness macro-assembled graphene (nMAG) films with widely tunable THz conductivity, enabling versatile solid-state THz devices and sensors, showing multifunctional nMAG-based applications. The THz conductivities of free-standing nMAGs showed a broad range from 1.2 x 10 3 S/m in reduced graphene oxide before annealing to 4.0 x 10 6 S/m in a nMAG film annealed at 2800 °C. We fabricated nMAG/dielectric/metal and nMAG/dielectric/nMAG THz Salisbury absorbers with broad reflectance ranging from 0% to 80%. The highly conductive nMAG films enabled THz metasurfaces for sensing applications. Taking advantage of the resonant field enhancement arising from the plasmonic metasurface structures and the strong interactions between analyte molecules and nMAG films, we have successfully detected diphenylamine with a limit of detection of 4.2 pg. Those wafer-scale nMAG films present promising potential in high-performance THz electronics, photonics, and sensors.

Probing the Fine Symmetry Breaking in High-Temperature Superconductor Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ with Angle-Resolved Nonreciprocal Transport

After decades of research, symmetry breaking in high-temperature cuprate superconductors remains a key issue to resolve and is relevant to understanding their exotic quantum phases. In the prototypical cuprate superconductor, Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ (Bi2212), the possible symmetry breaking has been mostly examined microscopically with scanning tunneling microscopy and photoemission spectroscopy. However, macroscopic evidence and the direct implications for electronic transport have remained elusive. Using superconductivity-enhanced nonreciprocal transport, we report macroscopic evidence of inversion symmetry breaking in Bi2212. While the inversion symmetry breaking is subtle, its effect on nonreciprocal transport is significantly enhanced by the vortex motion during the superconducting transition, leading to a robust manifestation of inversion symmetry breaking in macroscopic transport. Combining angle-resolved nonreciprocal transport and 3D tight-binding model calculations, we derive that the inversion symmetry breaking is due to subtle crystal distortions that give rise to both in-plane and out-of-plane polar axes. Our work not only establishes nonreciprocal transport as a sensitive macroscopic probe to provide electrical transport-based evidence of fine symmetry breaking in Bi2212, but also paves the way for novel device applications such as high-temperature superconducting diodes and superconducting spintronics.

Selectively Reducing Nitrate into NH 3 in Neutral Media by PdCu Single-Atom Alloy Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction reaction (NO 3 – RR) technology provides a promising solution to recover the nitrate nutrition from wastewater through catalyzing nitrate reduction into value-added NH 3 . However, the selectivity and efficiency of electrocatalysts are frustrated due to the imbalance of *H adsorption (for NO 3 hydrogenation) and unavoidable adjacent *H self-coupling on active sites, resulting in competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we report a PdCu single-atom alloy (SAA) catalyst that allows isolated Pd sites to produce *H for the hydrogenation process of *NO 3 on neighboring Cu sites, which can restrain the *H self-coupling through extending the distance between two *H and thus effectively suppress competitive HER. Consequently, the PdCu SAA catalyst exhibits an ultrahigh NH 3 Faraday efficiency (FE) of 97.1% with a yield of 15.4 μmol cm –2 h –1 from the electrocatalytic NO 3 – RR in the neutral electrolyte, outperforming most of the reported catalysts. In conclusion, single-crystal experiments and theoretical calculations further prove that the introduction of atomic Pd on the Cu (100) surface could serve as the main active site and greatly decrease the energy barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) on Cu from ΔG = 0.39 eV (*NOO → *NOOH) to ΔG = 0.10 eV of *NOH → *NHOH on PdCu SAA.

Decadal-Scale Hydrothermal Alteration of Basalt: Implications for Long-Term Reactivity in Subsurface Technologies

Global demands to secure critical mineral supply chains and managing water resources require innovative resource management strategies. Subsurface basalt reservoirs offer a dual-purpose application, where CO2 enhanced critical metal recovery can be coupled with water remediation strategies for the extraction of economically important and environmentally relevant elements. This study utilizes static batch experiments conducted on Columbia River Basalt Group samples to evaluate long-term fluid–rock interactions relevant to coupled subsurface applications. Samples were reacted under elevated temperature and pressure conditions, for 296 and 4,061 days, providing a unique dataset to assess geochemical evolution, element partitioning, and aqueous chemistry over decadal timescales. The alteration was dominated by silicate, aluminosilicate, and oxide phases. Progressive hydrothermal alteration increased the cation exchange capacity through the formation of secondary minerals (e.g. clays and zeolites), influencing solute retention, ion exchange behavior, and aqueous chemistry. Grain-scale and bulk analyses revealed selective cation release and retention patterns, establishing a mechanistic baseline for predicting element mobility. These geochemical constraints inform the prospective use of CO2-enhanced metal recovery for critical resources (e.g. Co, Ni, Mn, Mg, Ti, Fe) and associated water-quality impacts, providing a foundation for the design and management of engineered fluid–rock systems in basalt reservoirs.

Developing Ideal Metalorganic Hydrides for Hydrogen Storage: from Theoretical Prediction to Rational Fabrication

Materials for hydrogen storage have been extensively explored for a few decades. Thousands of materials have been synthesized and tested, however, sparse systems could meet the practical requirements. Metalorganic hydrides discovered recently offer new opportunities. It is, however, extremely time-consuming and inefficient to experimentally screen potential materials from a large variety of metal cations and organic anions. In the present study, we performed wideranging theoretical predictions and screened more than 90 metalorganic hydrides, 20 of them were identified with both high hydrogen capacities (=5 wt%) and suitable thermodynamics (heat of H2 desorption: 25 ~ 35 kJ/mol-H2) that allows hydrogen uptake and release near ambient condition.

Single-Phase Spinel NiCo 2 O 4 as Highly Active and Stable Electrocatalysts for Urea Oxidation Reaction in Urea Electrolysis

Exploring and designing a stable and active catalyst for the urea electro-oxidation reaction (UOR, CO(NH 2 ) 2 + 6OH – → CO 2 + N 2 + 5H 2 O + 6e – ) is crucial for the long-term sustainability of ecological systems and clean energy production. We found that spinel NiCo 2 O 4 is a stable and active electrocatalyst for UOR at a relatively low anodic potential without triggering the competing oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A urea electrolysis cell (CO(NH 2 )2 + H 2 O → CO 2 + N 2 + 2H 2 ) utilizing a spinel NiCo 2 O 4 anode and a commercial Pt cathode was further characterized through galvanostatic polarization tests, demonstrating excellent structural stability at various current densities. Post-mortem analysis of long-term urea electrolysis measurements suggested that NiCo 2 O 4 electrocatalysts maintained a stable spinel structure. However, redistribution of Ni 3+ to Ni 2+ valence on the catalyst surface was observed, in contrast to the intact Co valence, indicating that (i) Ni sites are active toward urea adsorption and sequential electro-oxidation; (ii) while urea oxidation proceeds primarily through the direct electro-oxidation mechanism, chemical reactions between the Ni 3+ site and urea occur during long-term electrochemical UOR operation. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations were used to calculate the adsorption energies of urea molecules on NiO, Co 3 O 4 , and NiCo 2 O 4 , revealing the importance of regulating the configuration of adsorbed urea molecules on the NiCo 2 O 4 surface.

Electrochemical Reduction Pathways from Goethite to Green Iron in Alkaline Solution with Silicate Additive

Energy-efficient and low-temperature iron electrolysis in alkaline solutions is a low-cost and sustainable ironmaking process with zero-carbon emissions when renewable electrical sources are involved. However, its implementation is hindered by electrochemically inert Fe 3 O 4 and parasitic H 2 gas formation during the electrochemical reduction process, resulting in the low energy efficiency of iron electrolysis. Here, we further explore the potential of electrochemical reduction of goethite (FeOOH) by employing a low concentration of silicate additive in an alkaline solution to mitigate Fe 3 O 4 accumulation and H 2 generation. Electrochemical measurements coupled with operando X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption spectroscopy suggested FeOOH → Fe 3 O 4 → Fe(OH) 2 → Fe reduction pathways. Interestingly, a poorly crystalline or amorphous Fe(OH) 2 phase formed in the NaOH/silicate mixed electrolyte, possibly due to the inhibitive effect of silicate on water and ion transport, which eventually contributed to the improved reduction of Fe 3 O 4 , also supported by atomistic simulations. This work demonstrates the potential for silicate as a low-cost and effective electrolyte additive to improve room-temperature green iron formation via electrolysis.

Feasibility of Algal Biochar, a Byproduct of Biofuel Production, as a Supplemental Cementitious Material

Algal biochar, as the solid residue of biofuel production from algal biomass, is reported to explore disposition options, aiming to lessen the liability or obstacles to biofuel production processes. However, landfills and open combustion lead to adverse environmental impacts. One way to add value to such wastes is to use them as admixtures in cementitious construction materials. This study aims to investigate the feasibility of algae-derived biochar as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) at different water contents and mixture ratios. Algal biochar-cement composites were prepared with different algal biochar content as well as different water-to-cement (w/c) ratios, and the surface area, morphology, elemental, and mineralogical composition were characterized. To compensate for the high-water absorption of algal biochar, a small concentration of a superplasticizer was used since higher w/c ratios negatively impact strength. The mechanical performance of algal biochar-cement composites is compared with control composites using commercial silica fume as a typical commercial SCM. The findings suggest that algal biochar is a promising candidate to replace commercial SCM, like silica fume, since algal biochar-cement composites can reach comparable compressive strength and Young’s modulus to commercial pozzolan-cement materials with the same w/c ratio, though at later curing times, 33 days. Although the tensile strength of algal biochar-cement composites is statistically similar at 7 days, it is significantly lower at later curing times, and further investigation is required to improve this property. Algal biochar-based cement binders showed comparable embodied carbon to silica fume-based cement binders based on a cradle-to-gate lifecycle analysis. However, the ability of algal biochar to absorb large volumes of CO 2 over short periods of time, as measured in this study, makes this novel SCM an excellent alternative to reduce the embodied carbon of concrete structures cradle-to-grave at 1/10 of the cost. In conclusion, valorization of algae-derived solid waste provides great potential to reduce embodied carbon and brings credit to biofuel production and concrete-based construction.
