Regiospecific Incorporation of Acetylene Linker in High‐Electron Mobility Dimerized Acceptors for Organic Solar Cells with High Efficiency (18.8%) and Long 1‐Sun Lifetime (> 5000 h)

Abstract The commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs) requires both high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and long‐term stability. However, the lifetime of the OSCs containing small‐molecule acceptors (SMA) should be significantly enhanced. In this study, a series of planarity‐controlled is developed, high electron mobility dimerized SMAs (DSMAs) and realize OSCs with high‐performance (PCE = 18.8%) and high‐stability ( t 80% lifetime = 5380 h under 1‐Sun illumination). An acetylene linker with a planar triple bond is designed for dimerization of SMA units to afford the high backbone planarity necessary to achieve high crystallinity and electron mobility. To further engineer the molecular conformation and electron mobility of the DSMAs, different regioisomers of a Y‐based SMA are dimerized to yield three regioisomerically distinct DSMAs, denoted as DYA‐I, DYA‐IO, and DYA‐O, respectively. It is found that the crystallinity, electron mobility, and glass transition temperature of the DSMAs gradually increase in the order of DYA‐O, DYA‐IO, and DYA‐I, which, in turn, enhance the PCE and device stability of the resulting OSCs; DYA‐O (PCE = 16.45% and t 80% lifetime = 3337 h) < DYA‐IO (PCE = 17.54% and t 80% lifetime = 4255 h) < DYA‐I (PCE = 18.83% and t 80% lifetime = 5380 h).

Design of Star‐Shaped Trimer Acceptors for High‐Performance (Efficiency > 19%), Photostable, and Mechanically Robust Organic Solar Cells

Abstract High power conversion efficiency (PCE), long‐term stability, and mechanical robustness are prerequisites for the commercial applications of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a new star‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐S) is developed and high‐performance OSCs with a PCE of 19.0%, high photo‐stability (t 80% lifetime = 2600 h under 1‐sun illumination), and mechanical robustness with a crack‐onset strain (COS) of 21.6% are achieved. The isotropic molecular structure of TYT‐S affords efficient multi‐directional charge transport and high electron mobility. Furthermore, its amorphous structure prevents the formation of brittle crystal‐to‐crystal interfaces, significantly enhancing the mechanical properties of the OSC. As a result, the TYT‐S‐based OSCs demonstrate a significantly higher PCE (19.0%) and stretchability (COS = 21.6%) than the linear‐shaped trimer acceptor (TYT‐L)‐based OSCs (PCE = 17.5% and COS = 6.4%) and the small‐molecule acceptor (MYT)‐based OSCs (PCE = 16.5% and COS = 1.3%). In addition, the increased molecular size of TYT‐S, relative to that of MYT and dimer (DYT), suppresses the diffusion kinetics of the acceptor molecules, substantially improving the photostability of the OSCs. Finally, to effectively demonstrate the potential of TYT‐S, intrinsically stretchable (IS)‐OSCs are constructed. The TYT‐S‐based IS‐OSCs exhibit high device stretchability (strain at PCE 80% = 31%) and PCE of 14.4%.

Molecular Precision Engineering for Efficient Binary Organic Photovoltaics through Energy Level and Fibrillar Structure Modulation

Adjusting the energy levels and fibrillar morphology is paramount to enhancing the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs). In the present study, an increase in the open-circuit voltage (VOC) is facilitated through the elongation of the alkyl chain within AQx (namely AQx-8), aiming to decrease the free volume ratio (FVR). This reduction in FVR attenuates electron-phonon coupling, thereby augmenting emission efficiency and diminishing the non-radiative energy loss (ΔEnr). To further refine the energy levels and morphological characteristics, the external undecyl chain of AQx-8 is substituted with a shorter carbon chain and cyclohexane noted for its considerable steric hindrance (AQx-H). Additionally, this alteration significantly mitigates intermolecular aggregation, expands the bandgap, and elevates the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, culminating in an elevated VOC of 0.923 V in devices based on AQx-H. Morphological analysis reveals that blends based on AQx-H exhibit an enhanced multi-length-scale fibrillar structure, which is conducive to exciton dissociation and charge transport, thereby contributing to a high fill factor (FF) nearing 80%. Consequently, this study reports one of the highest binary PCEs documented, standing at 19.5% (with certification at 19.0%).

Vacancy‐Enabled O3 Phase Stabilization for Manganese‐Rich Layered Sodium Cathodes

Abstract Manganese‐rich layered oxide materials hold great potential as low‐cost and high‐capacity cathodes for Na‐ion batteries. However, they usually form a P2 phase and suffer from fast capacity fade. In this work, an O3 phase sodium cathode has been developed out of a Li and Mn‐rich layered material by leveraging the creation of transition metal (TM) and oxygen vacancies and the electrochemical exchange of Na and Li. The Mn‐rich layered cathode material remains primarily O3 phase during sodiation/desodiation and can have a full sodiation capacity of ca. 220 mAh g −1 . It delivers ca. 160 mAh g −1 specific capacity between 2–3.8 V with >86 % retention over 250 cycles. The TM and oxygen vacancies pre‐formed in the sodiated material enables a reversible migration of TMs from the TM layer to the tetrahedral sites in the Na layer upon de‐sodiation and sodiation. The migration creates metastable states, leading to increased kinetic barrier that prohibits a complete O3‐P3 phase transition.

Microstructure characteristics of LPBF&HIP fabricated graded composite transition joint between ferritic steel and austenitic stainless steel

Graded composite transition joints (GCTJs) offer a promising alternative to conventional dissimilar metal welds (DMWs) by enabling smooth compositional and microstructural transitions. However, GCTJs fabricated solely through additive manufacturing (AM) face challenges such as heat accumulation, complex parameter control, and elemental segregation. In this study, we propose a novel approach that relies on AM to design a spatially graded structure in one alloy and then employs hot isostatic pressing (HIP) as a diffusion bonding method to join it with a second alloy. Here, this method combines the flexibility of AM with the powder net-shaping advantage of HIP. Specifically, a series of closely packed austenitic stainless steel 304 conical structures were printed using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) and then combined with ferritic steel P91 powder via HIP. By using electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques, the microstructure characteristics of the GCTJ of 304&P91, especially the interdiffusion zone (IDZ), have been systematically investigated. The microstructure at the interface transitions from austenite-ferrite (A+F) to austenite-martensite-ferrite (A+M+F), and finally to martensite-ferrite (M+F) due to diffusion. Additionally, the diffusion width between 304 and P91 increases with the volume fraction of P91. This unique design also ensures a gradual transition in both hardness and thermal expansion coefficient from 304 to P91, thereby enabling a smooth gradient in functional properties. Overall, this study proposes a novel approach for fabricating GCTJs and contributes to advancing design concepts in the field of dissimilar metal joining.

Xylose metabolic engineering of Issatchenkia orientalis for 3-hydroxypropionic acid production from cellulosic hydrolysate without nutrient supplementation

Bioconversion of lignocellulosic biomass offers a promising alternative to petroleum-based chemical production. However, inefficient xylose utilization and toxic compounds in cellulosic hydrolysate limit microbial fermentation, as the hydrolysate contains substantial amounts of xylose in addition to glucose. To address these challenges, we engineered Issatchenkia orientalis to produce 3-hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP) directly from sorghum hydrolysate under low-pH conditions. A heterologous xylose utilization pathway consisting of XYL1, XYL2, and XYL3 from Scheffersomyces stipitis was introduced into an engineered 3-HP producing strain, enabling efficient conversion of xylose to 3-HP. The engineered strain produced 46.8 g/L 3-HP from sorghum hydrolysate without nutrient supplementation. To eliminate the lag phase under low-pH conditions, fermentation was conducted at pH 6.0 for the first three days, after which pH control was discontinued and in situ 3-HP accumulation buffered the culture. This partial pH control strategy increased 3-HP productivity by 55% from 0.20 to 0.31 g/L∙h, while maintaining low-pH conditions. Introducing an additional copy of XYL2 further increased 3-HP titer to 53.5 g/L and the yield by 33%, from 0.30 to 0.40 g/g sugars, with pH reaching 4.5 at the end of fermentation. This represents one of the highest reported 3-HP titers and yields from cellulosic hydrolysate without additional nutrient supplementation. This work demonstrates a nutrient-independent and low-pH bioprocess for upgrading lignocellulosic hydrolysate into 3-HP, highlighting the industrial potential of engineered xylose-utilizing I. orientalis for sustainable production of platform chemicals from renewable feedstocks.

Structure-based design of SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease inhibitors

The COVID-19 pandemic is caused by SARS-CoV-2, an RNA virus with high transmissibility and mutation rate. Given the paucity of orally bioavailable antiviral drugs to combat SARS-CoV-2 infection, there is a critical need for additional antivirals with alternative mechanisms of action. Papain-like protease (PL pro ) is one of the two SARS-CoV-2 encoded viral cysteine proteases essential for viral replication. PL pro cleaves at three sites of the viral polyproteins. In addition, PLpro antagonizes the host immune response upon viral infection by cleaving ISG15 and ubiquitin from host proteins. Therefore, PL pro is a validated antiviral drug target. In this study, we report the X-ray crystal structures of papain-like protease (PL pro ) with two potent inhibitors, Jun9722 and Jun9843 . Subsequently, we designed and synthesized several series of analogs to explore the structure-activity relationship, which led to the discovery of PL pro inhibitors with potent enzymatic inhibitory activity and antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2. Together, the lead compounds are promising drug candidates for further development.

Precise ROCOF estimation algorithm for low inertia power grids

The precise estimation of Rate Of Change Of Frequencies (ROCOFs) in a generation trip event can be helpful on power system inertia estimation, fast system response, and accurate event capturing. However, the ROCOF estimations from the existing Synchronized Measurement Devices (SMDs) are usually simply calculated by the finite difference between two adjacent frequency measurement points. The ineluctable noises, disturbances, and spikes from real-world frequency measurements can bring large dynamics to the ROCOF estimation and thus can result in an inaccurate estimation of the initial ROCOF. This issue becomes more serious when the target power grid has low inertia, and a large amount of distributed energy sources are deployed. To address this issue, a precise ROCOF estimation algorithm is designed based on least square method with flexible window size. In addition, a median filter is also designed and applied on the frequency measurements before using the proposed algorithm. The window size and thresholds in the proposed algorithm are determined with historical event data analysis. The proposed algorithm is deployed in a low cost, flexible, and distribution level universal grid analyzer (UGA) platform. In conclusion, multiple experiments are conducted in both a laboratory and the Hawaiian Islands to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Evaluating Grid Strength under Uncertain Renewable Generation

The increasing displacement of synchronous generators with renewable resources such as wind and solar via power electronic interfaces causes a reduction in short-circuit strength and weak grid issues. The variation and uncertainty of renewable energy increase challenges for identifying weak grid conditions. This paper proposes an efficient method to analyze the impact of uncertain renewable energy on grid strength. The proposed method uses the probabilistic collocation method (PCM) to approximate the results of grid strength assessment under uncertain renewable generation, in order to reduce computational burden without compromising result accuracy when compared with traditional Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). To improve the accuracy of the approximation results, the proposed method integrates the K-means clustering technique with PCM to select the approximation samples of input variables. The efficacy of the proposed method is demonstrated by comparison with MCS on the modified IEEE 9-bus system and modified IEEE 39-bus system with multiple renewable generators.

Effect of iron substitution in cryptomelane on the heterogeneous reaction with isoprene

Biogenic isoprene is an important pollutant for regional air quality. Being ubiquitously distributed on the earth surface, manganese (hydr)oxides should play a vital role in the transformation of isoprene. Cryptomelane is a typical manganese oxide with isomorphous substitution of Fe for Mn, but less attention has been paid to its heterogeneous reaction with isoprene. When Fe 3+ replaces Mn 3+ , K + is depleted and Mn 3+ is oxidized to Mn 4+ . In contrast, oxygen vacancies are formed when Fe 3+ substitutes Mn 4+ . Fe substitution creates weak crystallites and abundant mesopores, resulting in the increase of isoprene adsorption. As found by theoretical calculations, the Mn 4+ –O 2- bonds at the cross sections of the tunnels is more active than that on the outer wall of the tunnels. After the adsorption of isoprene, bridging carboxylate species and hydrogen-bonding water are produced and the surface octahedra are distorted, i.e., Mn 4+ O 6 → Mn 3+ O 6-δ . As the heat facilitates the breakage of Mn 4+ –O 2- , the increase of environmental temperature enhances the oxidation of isoprene. Here the above findings shed light on the effect of Fe substitution in cryptomelane to enhance the oxidation of isoprene, and illustrates that heterogeneous reaction with isoprene impairs the transformation of other environmental substances on cryptomelane.

Cost-effective valorization of 2,3-butanediol to high-value chemicals and jet fuel

Here, this work outlines an optimized process for converting 2,3-butanediol (BDO) into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and C4 chemicals. BDO is reactively separated from fermentation broth by forming dioxolanes, which are converted to isobutyraldehyde, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and 1,3-butadiene. These intermediates are reduced and dehydrated over Cu/ZSM-5 to form alkenes, which can be oligomerized and hydrotreated to jet-range alkanes. Previous BDO-dioxolane-alkene processes are limited by the requirement for a continuous aldehyde source for dioxolane formation. Brønsted acidic zeolites catalyze dioxolane deacetalization to form isobutyraldehyde and MEK in a >2:1 molar ratio, providing an internal, recyclable aldehyde source. Dioxolane formation optimization was performed to achieve >95% dioxolane yields over Amberlyst-15 and minimize isobutyraldehyde recycle. The overall BDO-dioxolane-fuel process yields an alkane mixture that enables at least a 50% v/v blend with Jet-A. Techno-economic analyses and life cycle assessments for this BDO-dioxolane-fuel process yield scenarios with <$2.50 per gallon gas equivalent and >58% reduction in CO2 emissions.
