Shuttle Orbiter arrestment system studies

Scale model studies of the Shuttle Orbiter arrestment system were conducted to determine the proper net arrestment system configuration to bring the Orbiter to a safe stop in the event of a runway overshoot. Areas of interest include the effect of various net geometries on net engagement of the nose gear and main gear; and whether or not the top bundle contacts the crew cabin window. The model tests indicated that the net arrestment system was properly designed to bring the Orbiter to a safe stop with minimal amount of damage. The test procedures and data are presented.

Earth orbiting Sisyphus system study

The feasibility of employing an optical meteoroid detecting system, known as Sisyphus, to measure the near-earth particulates from an earth orbiting vehicle, is considered. A Sisyphus system can discriminate between natural and man-made particles since the system measures orbital characteristics of particles. A Sisyphus system constructed for the Pioneer F/G missions to Jupiter is used as the baseline, and is described. The amount of observing time which can be obtained by a Sisyphus instrument launched into various orbits is determined. Observation time is lost when, (1) the Sun is in or near the field of view, (2) the lighted Earth is in or near the field of view, (3) the instrument is eclipsed by the Earth, and (4) the phase angle measured at the particle between the forward scattering direction and the instrument is less than a certain critical value. The selection of the launch system and the instrument platform with a dedicated, attitude controlled payload package is discussed. Examples of such systems are SATS and SOLRAD 10(C) vehicles, and other possibilities are AVCO Corp. S4 system, the OWL system, and the Delta Payload Experiment Package.

Cargo/Logistics Airlift System Study (CLASS), Volume 1

Current and advanced air cargo systems are evaluated using industrial and consumer statistics. Market and commodity characteristics that influence the use of the air mode are discussed along with a comparison of air and surface mode on typical routes. Results of on-site surveys of cargo processing facilities at airports are presented, and institutional controls and influences on air cargo operations are considered.

Integrated Application of Active Controls (IAAC) technology to an advanced subsonic transport project. ACT/Control/Guidance System study, volume 1

The active control technology (ACT) control/guidance system task of the integrated application of active controls (IAAC) technology project within the NASA energy efficient transport program was documented. The air traffic environment of navigation and air traffic control systems and procedures were extrapolated. An approach to listing flight functions which will be performed by systems and crew of an ACT configured airplane of the 1990s, and a determination of function criticalities to safety of flight, are the basis of candidate integrated ACT/Control/Guidance System architecture. The system mechanizes five active control functions: pitch augmented stability, angle of attack limiting, lateral/directional augmented stability, gust load alleviation, and maneuver load control. The scope and requirements of a program for simulating the integrated ACT avionics and flight deck system, with pilot in the loop, are defined, system and crew interface elements are simulated, and mechanization is recommended. Relationships between system design and crew roles and procedures are evaluated.

Redox Bulk Energy Storage System Study, Volume 1

Opportunities were found for electrochemical energy storage devices in the U.S. electric utility industry. Application requirements for these devices were defined, including techno-economic factors. A new device, the Redox storage battery was analyzed. The Redox battery features a decoupling of energy storage and power conversion functions. General computer methods were developed to simulate Redox system operations. These studies showed that the Redox system is potentially attractive if certain performance goals can be achieved. Pathways for reducing the cost of the Redox system were identified.

Advanced hybrid vehicle propulsion system study

Results are presented of a study of an advanced heat engine/electric automotive hybrid propulsion system. The system uses a rotary stratified charge engine and ac motor/controller in a parallel hybrid configuration. The three tasks of the study were (1) parametric studies involving five different vehicle types, (2) design trade-off studies to determine the influence of various vehicle and propulsion system paramaters on system performance fuel economy and cost, and (3) a conceptual design establishing feasibility at the selected approach. Energy consumption for the selected system was .034 1/km (61.3 mpg) for the heat engine and .221 kWh/km (.356 kWh/mi) for the electric power system over a modified J227 a schedule D driving cycle. Life cycle costs were 7.13 cents/km (11.5 cents/mi) at $2/gal gasoline and 7 cents/kWh electricity for 160,000 km (100,000 mi) life.

Apollo 2 Second Generation Lunar Exploration System Studies CFY 1963

The Apollo II Second Generation Lunar Exploration System includes the direct landing spacecraft which consists of cargo command module, service module, and landing module. The landing module is also capable of being used as the Lunar Landing Vehicle (LLV) for landing unmanned cargos consisting of shelter modules such as the Lunar Occupancy Payload and other cargo in support of lunar surface operations. High energy cryogenic propellants are utilized to permit direct landing, manned, or logistic missions with use of a single Saturn V class booster. In last year's studies, the LLV was configured for maximum payload and with consideration for the direct three-man landing and return mission. Light weight and low vehicle height above the lunar surface at touchdown were major objectives. Logistic cargos of more than 27,000 pounds landed on the Moon were achieved within the single Saturn V boost capability. For the manned mission, the lunar take-off weight was determined to be 28,000 pounds ready for the return-to-Earth portion of the mission. The command module utilized was an advanced light-weight design weighing 10,000 pounds including supporting subsystems. Cryogenic oxygen/hydrogen propulsion was again used for maximum propulsion efficiency. Study of the Lunar Occupancy Payload was also accomplished last year. This module was configured to serve as an early lunar shelter or outpost station or as a basic module of an integrated base module complex. Single and dual compartment versions, as well as special mission versions, were studied.

Advanced Propulsion Power Distribution System for Next Generation Electric/Hybrid Vehicle: Preliminary System Studies - Phase 1

The report essentially summarizes the work performed in order to satisfy the above project objective. In the beginning, different energy storage devices, such as battery, flywheel and ultra capacitor are reviewed and compared, establishing the superiority of the battery. Then, the possible power sources, such as IC engine, diesel engine, gas turbine and fuel cell are reviewed and compared, and the superiority of IC engine has been established. Different types of machines for drive motor/engine generator, such as induction machine, PM synchronous machine and switched reluctance machine are compared, and the induction machine is established as the superior candidate. Similar discussion was made for power converters and devices. The Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) appears to be the most superior device although Mercury Cadmium Telluride (MCT) shows future promise. Different types of candidate distribution systems with the possible combinations of power and energy sources have been discussed and the most viable system consisting of battery, IC engine and induction machine has been identified. Then, HFAC system has been compared with the DC system establishing the superiority of the former. The detailed component sizing calculations of HFAC and DC systems reinforce the superiority of the former. A preliminary control strategy has been developed for the candidate HFAC system. Finally, modeling and simulation study have been made to validate the system performance. The study in the report demonstrates the superiority of HFAC distribution system for next generation electric/hybrid vehicle.
