Total systems design analysis of high performance structures

Designer-control parameters were identified at interdiscipline interfaces to optimize structural systems performance and downstream development and operations with reliability and least life-cycle cost. Interface tasks and iterations are tracked through a matrix of performance disciplines integration versus manufacturing, verification, and operations interactions for a total system design analysis. Performance integration tasks include shapes, sizes, environments, and materials. Integrity integrating tasks are reliability and recurring structural costs. Significant interface designer control parameters were noted as shapes, dimensions, probability range factors, and cost. Structural failure concept is presented, and first-order reliability and deterministic methods, benefits, and limitations are discussed. A deterministic reliability technique combining benefits of both is proposed for static structures which is also timely and economically verifiable. Though launch vehicle environments were primarily considered, the system design process is applicable to any surface system using its own unique filed environments.

Pterodactyl: Thermal Protection System Design Methodology for a Flap Control System

As interest in non-traditional entry vehicles continues to grow, the need for a Thermal Protection System (TPS) analysis approach that can account for entry solutions with changing geometry and complicated flow dynamics becomes invaluable. The NASA Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Pterodactyl project aims to accomplish this through examination of a flap controlled Adaptable, Deployable Entry Placement Technology (ADEPT)-style Deployable Entry Vehicle (DEV). This paper details an improved methodology for modeling the aerothermodynamic environment and initial TPS design for a flap control system integrated with a symmetric DEV. Improvements include i) the addition of an anchoring process that uses an increased fidelity aerodynamic solution to anchor the aerothermal environment predictions and ii) increased surface resolution, for the 1D heat transfer analysis, to isolate the hottest area on the flap that will require the thickest TPS. It was found that the anchoring process provided an improved aerothermal environment prediction. Additionally, this analysis demonstrated that there is a need for increased surface resolution in the 1D thermal analysis since the predicted location of the hottest point was significantly different than the location identified using very coarse surface resolution.

Diagnostic system design for the Ion Auxiliary Propulsion System /IAPS/ - Flight test of two 8 cm mercury ion thrusters

The experimental design of a Diagnostic Subsystem (DSS) as part of an Ion Auxiliary Propulsion System (IAPS) to be flown on P80-1 spacecraft in May 1983, is discussed. The DSS is composed of several detectors measuring thruster efflux, material deposition and spacecraft potential relative to the local space plasma in the vicinity of two 8 cm mercury ion thrusters. The detectors consist of two QCM units measuring frequency in the range of two to 65 KHz. Nine solar cell arrays have the capability of measuring current and voltage from 0-600 mA and 0-0.9 V. Seven ion collectors can measure ion currents with bias voltages of 0, 25, 55 and 96 V. The potential probe can measure current at 16 different commandible levels varying from one to 5 K microamperes within a voltage range of -25 to 175 V. The analysis of the ground-based data indicates that the hardware is qualified for flight, with the detectors and electronic units having passed all functional and environmental tests. Block diagrams are given and the functional parameters of the different design configurations are described.

The System Complexity Metric (SCM) Explains Systems Design and is Correlated with Cost and Failure Rate

The human short term memory span and working capacity is limited to three to five items, especially if they are organized complex “chunks” of information. The impression of complexity occurs when a system is simply difficult to understand, where there is no apparent pattern to predict its behavior. Hierarchical systems design can reduce perceived complexity and increase the amount of information that can be managed. The SCM was developed to measure complexity and help compare proposed overall system architectures before detailed design information is available. The SCM is defined as the sum of the number of major nodes, N, in the system block diagram plus the number of one-way interactions, I, between the nodes. SCM = N + I. SCM’s are easily determined by direct inspection of high-level block diagrams of life support systems. Axiomatic design develops a hierarchy of subsystem requirements and designs together in a top-down, back-and-forth process. A coupling matrix is used to control the relationships between the subsystem functions and design concepts. Axiomatic design can improve system design by decoupling requirements and designs. Axiomatic design was applied to the planning of a closed life support system, similar to that used on the International Space Station. A materially open as opposed to a closed system design was created by removing the interconnections required to close the system. The open system had the same number of designed subsystems as the closed system, but it had many fewer interconnections and its SCM was lower by about half. The costs were estimated and the MTBF (Mean Time Before Failure) tabulated for open and closed space life support systems. The estimated costs were linearly proportional to SCM for the wide variations of SCM in life support, but small differences may not be significant. The flight and preflight MTBF’s both declined exponentially with increasing MTBF, faster than MTBF-2, even though the preflight estimated MTBF’s were about ten times higher than the flight MTBF’s.

Time domain desensitized specific optimal system design

A digital computer algorithm for desensitized specific optimal system design for general time-invariant nonlinear systems is presented. The algorithm utilizes a technique of partitioning and uncoupling of the original specific closed-loop system state and sensitivity equations into linear, nonlinear, and control subsystems. Results of the application of the algorithm in the design of a Saturn V Launch Vehicle analog attitude control system and an LST image motion compensation digital controller are given.

Application of numerical optimization techniques to control system design for nonlinear dynamic models of aircraft

Control system design for general nonlinear flight dynamic models is considered through numerical simulation. The design is accomplished through a numerical optimizer coupled with analysis of flight dynamic equations. The general flight dynamic equations are numerically integrated and dynamic characteristics are then identified from the dynamic response. The design variables are determined iteratively by the optimizer to optimize a prescribed objective function which is related to desired dynamic characteristics. Generality of the method allows nonlinear effects to aerodynamics and dynamic coupling to be considered in the design process. To demonstrate the method, nonlinear simulation models for an F-5A and an F-16 configurations are used to design dampers to satisfy specifications on flying qualities and control systems to prevent departure. The results indicate that the present method is simple in formulation and effective in satisfying the design objectives.

A computational design system for rapid CFD analysis

A computation design system (CDS) is described in which these tools are integrated in a modular fashion. This CDS ties together four key areas of computational analysis: description of geometry; grid generation; computational codes; and postprocessing. Integration of improved computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis tools through integration with the CDS has made a significant positive impact in the use of CFD for engineering design problems. Complex geometries are now analyzed on a frequent basis and with greater ease.

System Design for a Spaceborne Cloud Rada

This paper presents some crucial design parameters and a strawman system design for a nadir-looking, 94-GHz spaceborne cloud profiling radar. This sensor is expected to provide cloud measurements at vertical resolution of 500 m and with a minimum detectable cloud reflectivity of slightly better than -30 dBZ. The radar design is intended to be accommodated by a spacecraft with limited resources. It uses a 2-m antenna and an extended interaction amplifier (EIA) that are readily available in either ground-based and airborne applications. For space application, improvements in the EIA lifetime and space qualification will be required. For various reasons, the spaceborne cloud radar system development is expected to be greatly benefited by the implementation of an aircraft cloud radar instrument.
