Proposal for implementation of CCSDS standards for use with spacecraft engineering/housekeeping data

Many of today's low earth orbiting spacecraft are using the Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems (CCSDS) protocol for better optimization of down link RF bandwidth and onboard storage space. However, most of the associated housekeeping data has continued to be generated and down linked in a synchronous, Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) fashion. There are many economies that the CCSDS protocol will allow to better utilize the available bandwidth and storage space in order to optimize the housekeeping data for use in operational trending and analysis work. By only outputting what is currently important or of interest, finer resolution of critical items can be obtained. This can be accomplished by better utilizing the normally allocated housekeeping data down link and storage areas rather than taking space reserved for science.

Phase-Synchronized Modal Testing of Mirror Membrane

The research reports on the development of a whole-field, system-level interferometry technique having phase-synchronized data acquisition and adjustable phase triggering. The technique utilizes a Fizeau interferometer, arbitrary function generator, oscilloscope, trigger filter, and CCD camera to determine the out-of-plane modal frequencies of a thin, highly reflective membrane. The technique generates phase-adjustable CCD camera trigger signals that are synchronized to the audio frequency excitation signal. The surface figures from the resulting interferograms were evaluated with fringe-following software and compared against that of an ideal membrane vibrating at resonance.

Master clock and time distribution system for the NASA Deep Space Network

NASA's Deep Space Network (DSN) consists of more than 20 antennas located at three globally spaced ground communications facilities. Local generation and distribution of precise time and frequency reference signals comprise an essential and central component of each complex. Within each complex synchronized timing references are required by approximately 100 users located at distances up to 30 kilometers from the central control center and station Master Clock. In this paper a highly modular, hot-swappable, and expandable system design for generation, delivery, and synchronization of highly precise and stable timing signals over fiber optic cables is described.

The Bearingless Electrical Machine

Electromagnetic bearings allow the suspension of solids. For rotary applications, the most important physical effect is the force of a magnetic circuit to a high permeable armature, called the MAXWELL force. Contrary to the commonly used MAXWELL bearings, the bearingless electrical machine will take advantage of the reaction force of a conductor carrying a current in a magnetic field. This kind of force, called Lorentz force, generates the torque in direct current, asynchronous and synchronous machines. The magnetic field, which already exists in electrical machines and helps to build up the torque, can also be used for the suspension of the rotor. Besides the normal winding of the stator, a special winding was added, which generates forces for levitation. So a radial bearing, which is integrated directly in the active part of the machine, and the motor use the laminated core simultaneously. The winding was constructed for the levitating forces in a special way so that commercially available standard ac inverters for drives can be used. Besides wholly magnetic suspended machines, there is a wide range of applications for normal drives with ball bearings. Resonances of the rotor, especially critical speeds, can be damped actively.

Two carrier communication system with single transmitter

A pulse code modulated communication system is disclosed for transmitting two subcarrier modulated carriers from a single transmitter comprising two channels for phase modulating the two carriers independently. The modulating subcarriers are independently modulated by data and/or pseudonoise (PN) codes as desired. The modulated carriers are switched alternately to the single transmitter in synchronism with operation of a PN code generator when PN code modulation is present, as for ranging.

User data dissemination concepts for earth resources: Executive summary

The impact of the future capabilities of earth-resources data sensors (both satellite and airborne) and their requirements on the data dissemination network were investigated and optimum ways of configuring this network were determined. The scope of this study was limited to the continental U.S.A. (including Alaska) and to the 1985-1995 time period. Some of the conclusions and recommendations reached were: (1) Data from satellites in sun-synchronous polar orbits (700-920 km) will generate most of the earth-resources data in the specified time period. (2) Data from aircraft and shuttle sorties cannot be readily integrated in a data-dissemination network unless already preprocessed in a digitized form to a standard geometric coordinate system. (3) Data transmission between readout stations and central preprocessing facilities, and between processing facilities and user facilities are most economically performed by domestic communication satellites. (4) The effect of the following factors should be studied: cloud cover, expanded coverage, pricing strategies, multidiscipline missions.

Digital PIV Measurements of Acoustic Particle Displacements in a Normal Incidence Impedance Tube

Acoustic particle displacements and velocities inside a normal incidence impedance tube have been successfully measured for a variety of pure tone sound fields using Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV). The DPIV system utilized two 600-mj Nd:YAG lasers to generate a double-pulsed light sheet synchronized with the sound field and used to illuminate a portion of the oscillatory flow inside the tube. A high resolution (1320 x 1035 pixel), 8-bit camera was used to capture double-exposed images of 2.7-micron hollow silicon dioxide tracer particles inside the tube. Classical spatial autocorrelation analysis techniques were used to ascertain the acoustic particle displacements and associated velocities for various sound field intensities and frequencies. The results show that particle displacements spanning a range of 1-60 microns can be measured for incident sound pressure levels of 100-130 dB and for frequencies spanning 500-1000 Hz. The ability to resolve 1 micron particle displacements at sound pressure levels in the 100 dB range allows the use of DPIV systems for measurement of sound fields at much lower sound pressure levels than had been previously possible. Representative impedance tube data as well as an uncertainty analysis for the measurements are presented.

Coverability graphs for a class of synchronously executed unbounded Petri net

After detailing a variant of the concurrent-execution rule for firing of maximal subsets, in which the simultaneous firing of conflicting transitions is prohibited, an algorithm is constructed for generating the coverability graph of a net executed under this synchronous firing rule. The omega insertion criteria in the algorithm are shown to be valid for any net on which the algorithm terminates. It is accordingly shown that the set of nets on which the algorithm terminates includes the 'conflict-free' class.

Power-Factor Controller With Regenerative Braking

Modified power-factor motor-control circuit operates motor as a phase-controlled generator when load attempts to turn at higher than synchronous speed. An induction motor is required to act at times as a brake. Circuit modification allows power-factor controller to save energy in motoring mode and convert automatically to an induction-generator controller in generating, or braking, mode.

CoCoSim, a Code Generation Framework for Control/command Applications: An Overview of CoCoSim for Multi-Periodic Discrete Simulink Models

We present CoCoSim, a framework to support the design, code generation and analysis of discrete dataflow model expressed in Simulink. In this work, we specifically focus on the analysis and code generation of multi-periodic systems. For that CoCoSim provides two complementary approaches: the first amounts to encode the multiperiodic semantics in a pure-synchronous one – à la Lustre–, enabling the use of model checker for verifying properties. The second provides a faithful code generation into multiple communicating (mono)synchronous components – à la Prelude– that can be then simulated or embedded in the final platform with any real-time scheduler. These approaches have been experimented in various settings.

Design of an In-Slot Cooled Air-Core Flux-Focusing Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine for Electric Aircraft Applications

High performance and reliable permanent magnet synchronous machines are potentially a key technology for enabling reduced emissions in future generations of sustainable aircraft. In this paper, a novel air-core flux focusing permanent magnet synchronous machine with carbon fiber shafting for aviation applications is presented. A low-fidelity analytical sizing tool is detailed for the motor topology. The sizing tool is used to explore design trades and create an example 100 kW flux-focusing motor for eVTOL applications. Higher fidelity finite element analysis was used to validate the predicted performance of the motor. The selected design is able to achieve roughly 97 percent efficiency and 6 kW/kg at a continuous operating power of 100 kW.

Advanced Three-Dimensional Display System

A desktop-scale, computer-controlled display system, initially developed for NASA and now known as the VolumeViewer(TradeMark), generates three-dimensional (3D) images of 3D objects in a display volume. This system differs fundamentally from stereoscopic and holographic display systems: The images generated by this system are truly 3D in that they can be viewed from almost any angle, without the aid of special eyeglasses. It is possible to walk around the system while gazing at its display volume to see a displayed object from a changing perspective, and multiple observers standing at different positions around the display can view the object simultaneously from their individual perspectives, as though the displayed object were a real 3D object. At the time of writing this article, only partial information on the design and principle of operation of the system was available. It is known that the system includes a high-speed, silicon-backplane, ferroelectric-liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM), multiple high-power lasers for projecting images in multiple colors, a rotating helix that serves as a moving screen for displaying voxels [volume cells or volume elements, in analogy to pixels (picture cells or picture elements) in two-dimensional (2D) images], and a host computer. The rotating helix and its motor drive are the only moving parts. Under control by the host computer, a stream of 2D image patterns is generated on the SLM and projected through optics onto the surface of the rotating helix. The system utilizes a parallel pixel/voxel-addressing scheme: All the pixels of the 2D pattern on the SLM are addressed simultaneously by laser beams. This parallel addressing scheme overcomes the difficulty of achieving both high resolution and a high frame rate in a raster scanning or serial addressing scheme. It has been reported that the structure of the system is simple and easy to build, that the optical design and alignment are not difficult, and that the system can be built by use of commercial off-the-shelf products. A prototype of the system displays an image of 1,024 by 768 by 170 (=133,693,440) voxels. In future designs, the resolution could be increased. The maximum number of voxels that can be generated depends upon the spatial resolution of SLM and the speed of rotation of the helix. For example, one could use an available SLM that has 1,024 by 1,024 pixels. Incidentally, this SLM is capable of operation at a switching speed of 300,000 frames per second. Implementation of full-color displays in future versions of the system would be straightforward: One could use three SLMs for red, green, and blue, respectively, and the colors of the voxels could be automatically controlled. An optically simpler alternative would be to use a single red/green/ blue light projector and synchronize the projection of each color with the generation of patterns for that color on a single SLM.

Self-mode-locked chromium-doped forsterite laser generates 50-fs pulses

Stable transform-limited (delta nu-delta tau = 0.32) femtosecond pulses with a FWHM of 50 fs were generated from a self-mode-locked chromium-doped forsterite laser. The forsterite laser was synchronously pumped by a CW mode-locked Nd:YAG (82 MHz) laser that generated picosecond pulses (200-300 ps) and provided the starting mechanism for self-mode-locked operation. Maximum output power was 45 mW for 3.9 W of absorbed pumped power with the use of an output coupler with 1 percent transmission. The self-mode-locked forsterite laser was tuned from 1240 to 1270 nm.
