Meteorite impact - A suggestion for the origin of some stream channels on Mars

The appearance of many streamlike features on Mars indicates the formation of channels through erosion by liquid water. We suggest that streams originating at meteorite crater boundaries are the result of impact which released subsurface water trapped below the Martian surface by a layer of permafrost. Features indicating surface erosion are the presence of alluvial plains at the downstream ends of channels, an increase in stream width with distance from the meteorite craters, and a direct correlation among several examples between crater diameter and stream length. Water released from the subsurface is preferred over rainfall as a mechanism for the origin of stream channels originating from craters on Mars.

Double streams of protons in the distant geomagnetic tail

Two intermingled streams of protons have been observed in the distant geomagnetic tail. The number densities of the two streams are comparable, and their velocity difference tends to lie along the field direction. The lower-velocity stream is probably composed of magnetosheath protons which have diffused through the boundary of the distant tail. The higher-velocity stream appears to originate in the field reversal region.

Physical and dynamical studies of meteors. Meteor-fragmentation and stream-distribution studies

Population parameters of 275 streams including 20 additional streams in the synoptic-year sample were found by a computer technique. Some 16 percent of the sample is in these streams. Four meteor streams that have close orbital resemblance to Adonis cannot be positively identified as meteors ejected by Adonis within the last 12000 years. Ceplecha's discrete levels of meteor height are not evident in radar meteors. The spread of meteoroid fragments along their common trajectory was computed for most of the observed radar meteors. There is an unexpected relationship between spread and velocity that perhaps conceals relationships between fragmentation and orbits; a theoretical treatment will be necessary to resolve these relationships. Revised unbiased statistics of synoptic-year orbits are presented, together with parallel statistics for the 1961 to 1965 radar meteor orbits.

Solar wind stream evolution at large heliocentric distances - Experimental demonstration and the test of a model

A stream propagation model which neglects all dissipation effects except those occurring at shock interfaces, was used to compare Pioneer-10 solar wind speed observations, during the time when Pioneer 10, the earth, and the sun were coaligned, with near-earth Imp-7 observations of the solar wind structure, and with the theoretical predictions of the solar wind structure at Pioneer 10 derived from the Imp-7 measurements, using the model. The comparison provides a graphic illustration of the phenomenon of stream steepening in the solar wind with the attendant formation of forward-reverse shock pairs and the gradual decay of stream amplitudes with increasing heliocentric distance. The comparison also provides a qualitative test of the stream propagation model.

Solar cycle evolution of high-speed solar wind streams

Large amplitude high-speed solar wind streams and streams with maximum speeds in excess of 700 km/sec are far more common in years of declining and minimum solar activity than near solar maximum. Further, the broadest solar wind streams observed directly with space probes during the years 1962-1974 occurred near solar minimum in 1974. Changes in the frequency and nature of solar wind stream structures at the orbit of earth appear to be directly related to the long-term evolution of regions of low density in the solar corona.

Revised FORTRAN program for calculating velocities and streamlines on the hub-shroud midchannel stream surface of an axial-, radial-, or mixed-flow turbomachine or annular duct. 1: User's manual

A FORTRAN 4 computer program was developed that obtains a detailed subsonic or shock-free transonic flow solution on the hub-shroud midchannel stream surface of a turbomachine. The blade row may be fixed or rotating, and the blades may be twisted and leaned. Flow may be axial, mixed, or radial. Upstream and downstream flow variables may vary from hub to shroud, and provision is made to correct for loss of stagnation pressure. The results include velocities, streamlines, and flow angles on the stream surface as well as approximate blade surface velocities. Subsonic solutions are obtained by a finite-difference, stream-function solution. Transonic solutions are obtained by a velocity-gradient method that uses information from a finite-difference, stream-function solution at a reduced mass flow.

Apparatus for measuring a sorbate dispersed in a fluid stream

A sensitive, miniature apparatus was designed for measuring low concentrations of a sorbate dispersed in a fluid stream. The device consists of an elongated body having a surface capable of sorbing an amount of the sorbate proportional to the concentration in the fluid stream and propagating acoustic energy along its length. The acoustic energy is converted to an electrical output signal corresponding to the concentration of sorbate in the fluid stream. The device can be designed to exhibit high sensitivity to extremely small amounts of sorbate dispersed in a fluid stream and to exhibit low sensitivity to large amounts of sorbate. Another advantage is that the apparatus may be formed in a microminiature size and at a low cost using bath microfabrication technology.

Direct observation of the latitudinal extent of a high-speed stream in the solar wind

The latitudinal boundaries of stationary fast solar wind streams emerging from equatorward extensions of the sun's polar coronal holes are studied. Simultaneous data from the Helios 1 and Imp spacecraft at different heliographic latitudes are compared. The measured latitudinal speed gradient of 30 km/s/deg shows that large angular speed gradients occur at the leading edges of fast streams and also with respect to latitude. The data indicate that longitudinal speed gradients are steeper near 0.3 AU than at 1.0 AU. Generally, regions with large angular speed gradients are observed to separate fast streams from the surrounding slower plasma. This suggests the existence of mechanisms which diminish longitudinal speed gradients as the plasma travels toward 1.0 AU. It also seems that the distribution of solar wind speeds on a near-sun spherical surface has large mesalike high-speed regions. Comparisons of Helios 1 and Imp data with corona observations supports the hypothesis that high-speed solar wind streams emerge from coronal holes.

Interplanetary gas. XXII - Interaction of comet Kohoutek's ion tail with the compression region of a solar-wind corotating stream

An apparently successful identification of a comet-tail feature with a solar-wind event is presented. Photographs of comet Kohoutek 1973f show a large-scale disturbance in the middle and outer regions of the ion tail early on January 20 of 1974. On the previous and succeeding days the comet had, however, a 'normal' and less active appearance. The peculiar tail structure is linked to an encounter with rapidly changing solar-wind conditions on the forward edge of the high-velocity solar-wind stream which encountered the earth late on January 24. The stream produced a geomagnetic storm of the recurrent type. The high-speed stream appears to have been associated with a large near-equatorial coronal hole which underwent central meridian passage on January 22. It is proposed that the comet was in the compression region on the stream forward edge at the time of formation of the tail disturbance. The accuracy of the time delays is actually tested by an application of the wind shock theory of ionic tail orientations.

A note on the problem of jet stream formation

It is noted that the formation of 'jet streams', or narrow ringlike structures of small particles, in early planetary and satellite systems cannot result solely from inelastic collisions among the small particles. The possibility is considered that gravitational encounters between the particles will perturb them into more eccentric orbits and thus maintain the orbital coupling between particles (or jet streams) in neighboring orbits. It is found that when the gravitational effect of the particles is taken into account, the average eccentricity of the particles increases as agglomeration due to inelastic collisions proceeds. With respect to jet-stream formation, it is suggested that the ever-increasing orbital eccentricity of the particles will aid in coupling together the different 'sub-jet streams', so that large-scale orbital focusing toward the center of the whole system can continue. Alternative mechanisms leading to planetary accretion are briefly discussed.

The radial variation of corotating energetic particle streams in the inner and outer solar system

Spacecraft observations of 0.9 to 2.2 MeV protons are used to evaluate the radial gradient of long-lived corotating energetic particle streams for several time periods from mid-1973 to mid-1976. New evidence is presented for a positive gradient between 0.3 and some 3-4 AU and a negative one beyond some 3-5 AU. The relation between the corotating events in the inner solar system and the accompanying interplanetary magnetic field and solar wind is examined. It is shown, independently of possible secondary latitudinal effects, that between 0.3 and 1 AU, in a region where gradients up to 300%/AU exist, the particle stream is propagating inside a fast solar wind stream in a region adjacent to low- and high-speed stream interactions.

Effects of free-stream turbulence on diffuser performance

An experimental evaluation of the effects of free stream turbulence on the performance of a subsonic two dimensional diffuser was made. The diffuser's static pressure recovery coefficient was increased 11.4 and 21.1 percent at total. Divergence angles of 12 and 20 degrees respectively were obtained when the value of the inlet integral free stream scale of turbulence in the flow direction was at least 7.5 times larger than the inlet boundary layer displacement thickness, and when the inlet total free stream turbulence intensity was at least 3.5 percent. It is hypothesized that a larger scale of turbulence transmits the free stream energy to the wall more effectively and when coupled with large turbulence intensities, acts to decrease the distortion and delay separation within the diffuser.

Thermal iron ions in high speed solar wind streams Detection by the IMP 7/8 energetic particle experiments

The first measurements of the abundance of iron ions in high speed (greater than 600 km/s) solar wind streams have been made with the NOAA/JHU energetic particles experiments (EPE) on IMP 7/8. The identification of iron ions is quantitatively established using 4 years of observations and heavy ion accelerator calibrations of detectors similar to those flown on the spacecraft. Preliminary estimates of the Fe/H ratio are within a factor of 2 of the adopted coronal abundance (0.00005), and there is some evidence that Fe/H may remain approximately constant within a given stream. In the peaks of fast streams (700-800 km/s), about 50 iron ion counts are obtained every 20 s, offering the possibility of studying the Fe/H ratio with approximately 1 m time resolution in high speed streams throughout the decline of Solar Cycle 20 and the rise of Solar Cycle 21.

Observations of the gas stream in the mass transfer binary HR 2142 prime 1

The mass transfer binary system HR 2142 was observed at selected phases with the high resolution spectrograph on IUE. The observations were scheduled throughout the interval 0.91 phi 0.00 in order to allow viewing of the light of the primary star through the gas stream as it presents different orientations to the line of sight. Numerous UV lines formed in the gas stream were identified. The strengths and velocity variations displayed by these lines are compared with those observed in the ground based spectral region. As part of a preliminary analysis of the IUE data, column densities and velocities from Si III (4), Si IV (1), and Ti III (1) are used to deduce electron densities in the gas stream as well as its thickness. Possible evidence for stratification in the gas stream is presented.

Did ice streams carve Martian outflow channels

Outflow channels on Mars are long sinuous linear depressions that occur mostly in the equatorial area (+ or - 30 deg latitude). They differ from small valley networks by being larger and arising full-born from chaotic terrains. Outflow channels resemble terrestrial stream beds, and their origin has generally been attributed to water in catastrophic floods or mudflows. The problem of channel origin is examined here from the perspective of erosional characteristics and the resultant landforms created by former and present-day ice streams and glaciers on earth. From morphologic comparisons, an ice-stream origin seems equally well suited to explain the occurrences and form of the outflow channels on Mars, and in contrast with the hydraulic hypothesis, ice streams and ice sheets produce terrestrial features of the same scale as those observed on Mars.

Magnetohydrodynamic interaction of high-speed streams

Numerical solutions of a magnetohydrodynamic model are carried out to describe the nonlinear interaction of corotating high-speed streams near the solar equatorial plane. Two problems are studied. The first problem is to simulate the evolution of an idealized high-speed stream. Numerical solutions are obtained to represent the variations of flow velocity, magnetic field, plasma density, temperature, and conduction heat flux in the interaction region. They demonstrate that the dynamical interaction and heat conduction process are responsible for the thermal structure of a high-speed stream. The second problem deals with the formation of corotating shock waves near the leading edge of a broad stream resulting from the merging of characteristic curves. Corotating shocks do not necessarily occur in pairs; a reverse shock can be formed without a forward shock nearby.

Ion streams in the magnetotail

Ion mass spectrometer observations of low-temperature streaming plasmas in the earth's magnetotail are reported. Measurements in the energy per charge range 0 to 17 keV/e were made at geocentric radial distances less than 23 earth radii from the ISEE 1 spacecraft. Ion streams of solar wind origin in the magnetotail boundary layer and of ionospheric origin in the tail lobes and plasma sheet are described. A statistical study of some of the characteristics of the streams allows the inference that the central tail lobe plasmas are primarily constituted of ion streams of ionospheric origin and that the ionosphere is a significant contributor to the hot plasmas that form the plasma sheet.

Penetration of Air Jets Issuing from Circular, Square, and Elliptical Orifices Directed Perpendicularly to an Air Stream

An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the penetration of air jets d.irected perpendicularlY to an air stream. Jets Issuing from circular, square, and. elliptical orifices were investigated. and. the jet penetration at a position downstream of the orifice was determined- as a function of jet density, jet velocity, air-stream d.enaity, air-stream velocity, effective jet diameter, and. orifice flow coeffIcient. The jet penetrations were determined for nearly constant values of air-stream density at three tunnel-air velocities arid for a large range of Jet velocities and. densities. The results were correlated in terms of dimensionless parameters and the penetrations of the various shapes were compared. Greater penetration was obtained. with the square orifices and the elliptical orifices having an axis ratio of 4:1 at low tunnel-air velocities and low jet pressures than for the other orifices investigated. The square orifices gave the best penetrations at the higher values of tunnel-air velocity and jet total pressure.
