Exact results for nonlinear Drude weights in the spin-1/2 XXZ chain

Nonlinear Drude weight (NLDW) is a generalization of the linear Drude weight, which characterizes the nonlinear transport in quantum many-body systems. We investigate these weights for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain in the critical regime. The effects of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and an external magnetic field are also studied. Solving the Bethe equations numerically, we obtain these weights for very large system sizes and identify parameter regimes where the weights diverge in the thermodynamic limit. These divergences appear in all the orders studied in this Letter and can be regarded as a generic feature of the NLDWs. We study the origin of these divergences and reveal that they result from nonanalytic finite-size corrections to the ground-state energy. As a result, we compute closed-form expressions for several weights in the thermodynamic limit and find excellent agreement with the numerical results.

Confinement of many-body Bethe strings

Based on the Bethe ansatz approach and inelastic neutron scattering experiments, we reveal the evolution of confinement of many-body Bethe strings in ordered regions of the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet YbAlO 3 . In the antiferromagnetic phase, the spin dynamics is dominated by confined length-1 Bethe strings, whose dominancy in the high-energy branch of the excitation spectrum yields to confined length-2 Bethe strings when the material is tuned to the spin-density-wave phase. In the thermal-induced disordered region, the confinement effect disappears, and the system restores the conventional quantum integrable physics of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model. Finally, our results establish a unified picture based on a Bethe string for the spin dynamics in different magnetic phases of YbAlO 3 , and thus provide profound insight into many-body quantum magnetism.

Charge and Spin Dynamics of the Hubbard Chains

We calculate the local correlation functions of charge and spin for the one-chain and two-chain Hubbard model using density matrix renormalization group method and the recursion technique. Keeping only finite number of states we get good accuracy for the low energy excitations. We study the charge and spin gaps, bandwidths and weights of the spectra for various values of the on-site Coulomb interaction U and the electron filling. In the low energy part, the local correlation functions are different for the charge and spin. The bandwidths are proportional to t for the charge and J for the spin respectively.

Emergent spin-1 Haldane gap and ferroelectricity in a frustrated spin- 1 2 ladder

We report experimental and theoretical evidence that Rb 2 Cu 2 Mo 3 O 12 has a nonmagnetic tetramer ground state of a two-leg ladder comprising antiferromagnetically coupled frustrated spin-12 chains and exhibits a Haldane spin gap of emergent spin-1 pairs. Three spin excitations split from the spin-1 triplet by a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction are identified in inelastic neutron-scattering and electron spin resonance spectra. A tiny magnetic field generates ferroelectricity without closing the spin gap, indicating a unique class of ferroelectricity induced by a vector spin chirality order.

Emergence of Topologically Nontrivial Spin-Polarized States in a Segmented Linear Chain

The synthesis of new materials with novel or useful properties is one of the most important drivers in the fields of condensed matter physics and materials science. Discoveries of this kind are especially significant when they point to promising future basic research and applications. Van der Waals bonded materials comprised of lower-dimensional building blocks have been shown to exhibit emergent properties when isolated in an atomically thin form. Here, we report the discovery of a transition metal chalcogenide in a heretofore unknown segmented linear chain form, where basic building blocks each consisting of two hafnium atoms and nine tellurium atoms (Hf 2 Te 9 ) are van der Waals bonded end-to-end. First-principle calculations based on density functional theory reveal striking crystal-symmetry-related features in the electronic structure of the segmented chain, including giant spin splitting and nontrivial topological phases of selected energy band states. In this work, atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals single segmented Hf 2 Te 9 chains isolated within the hollow cores of carbon nanotubes, with a structure consistent with theoretical predictions. Van der Waals-bonded segmented linear chain transition metal chalcogenide materials could open up new opportunities in low-dimensional, gate-tunable, magnetic and topological crystalline systems.

Mana and thermalization: Probing the feasibility of near-Clifford Hamiltonian simulation

Quantum hydrodynamics is the emergent classical dynamics governing transport of conserved quantities in generic strongly interacting quantum systems. Here, recent matrix product operator methods [1,2] have made simulations of quantum hydrodynamics in 1+1D tractable, but they do not naturally generalize to 2+1D or higher, and they offer limited guidance as to the difficulty of simulations on quantum computers. Near-Clifford simulation algorithms are not limited to one dimension, and future error-corrected quantum computers will likely be bottlenecked by non-Clifford operations. We therefore investigate the non-Clifford resource requirements for simulation of quantum hydrodynamics using mana, a resource theory of non-Clifford operations. For infinite-temperature starting states, we find that the mana of subsystems quickly approaches zero, while for starting states with energy above some threshold the mana approaches a nonzero value. Surprisingly, in each case the finite-time mana is governed by the subsystem entropy, not the thermal state mana; we argue that this is because mana is a sensitive diagnostic of finite-time deviations from canonical typicality.

Helical spin structure in iron chains with hybridized boundaries

In this paper, we have compared the magnetic properties of well-controlled ultra-short (≤50 nm) atomic iron (Fe) chains embedded in Fe-phthalocyanine films with those in Fe–hydrogen (H2) phthalocyanine superlattices. Surprisingly, we found that the coercivity of the atomic chains with free boundary conditions is independent of the chain length, whereas the one subject to hybridization of the chain ends exhibits an unexpected length dependence. These findings suggest that ferromagnetism in the free-boundary condition system is caused by an intrinsic indirect exchange. On the other hand, controlled boundary conditions produce a helical spin structure due to an extrinsic indirect exchange, which arises from the interaction between iron atoms at the ends of the chain and the hydrogen in the H 2 phthalocyanine spacer. As a consequence, during magnetic reversal, ultra-short iron chains subject to boundary clamping develop a helical spin structure, leading to increased coercivity. These findings suggest unique insights and ideas for the design of atomic-scale ultra-dense magnetic storage nanodevices.

Dynamical phase transition in a strongly hybridized phonon-triplon chain

In this article, we study a dimerized spin-1/2 chain, such as CuGeO 3 , hosting triplon excitations coupled to optical phonons under weak terahertz laser driving. Both phonons and triplons weakly lose energy into the surrounding baths, forming a non-equilibrium steady state. In the strong phonon-triplon coupling regime, phonons near the two-triplon continuum hybridize strongly with triplons. Using mean-field Lindblad dynamics, we show that strong hybridization induces sharp first-order phase transitions—either single or simultaneous double—in the emission spectrum, mainly due to nonlinearities in the chain and the instantaneous breaking of spatial inversion symmetry, as captured by the phonon displacement. Using mean-field Floquet analysis of harmonic modes in both sectors, we analytically confirm the existence of these phase transitions. Furthermore, we map the complete steady-state phase diagram by varying key control parameters and provide experimentally relevant parameters for observing these transitions in laser-driven CuGeO 3 .

Connection between classical and quantum descriptions of spin waves using quantum circuits

A quantum computing circuit is presented that approximates a single spin wave quantum on a linear chain of spin 1/2 particles described by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian. The circuit is a product state where each qubit represents a spin. The spin wave motion is represented by opening the cone angle using Y rotations and then adding progressive Z rotations along the chain to represent wave propagation. We show analytically that this product state yields the correct dispersion relation in the limit of an unbounded chain. This observation is confirmed using both a simulator and various quantum processors. The use of the quantum computing paradigm in this case does not lead to a computational advantage, but rather leads to a novel conceptual connection between classical and quantum descriptions of spin waves, and may also be useful for characterizing the error in quantum processors.

Magnetic excitations, nonclassicality, and quantum wake spin dynamics in the Hubbard chain

Recent work has demonstrated that quantum Fisher information (QFI), a witness of multipartite entanglement, and magnetic Van Hove correlations G(r,t), a probe of local real-space real-time spin dynamics, can be successfully extracted from inelastic neutron scattering on spin systems through accurate measurements of the dynamical spin structure factor S(k,ω). In this work, we apply theoretically these ideas to the half-filled Hubbard chain with nearest-neighbor hopping, away from the strong-coupling limit. This model has nontrivial redistribution of spectral weight in S(k,ω) going from the noninteracting limit (U = 0) to strong coupling (U→∞), where it reduces to the Heisenberg quantum spin chain. We use the density matrix renormalization group to find S(k,ω), from which QFI is then calculated. We find that QFI grows with U. With realistic energy resolution it becomes capable of witnessing bipartite entanglement above U=2.5 (in units of the hopping), where it also changes slope. This point is also proximate to slope changes of the bandwidth W(U) and the half-chain von Neumann entanglement entropy. We compute G(r,t) by Fourier transforming S(k,ω). The results indicate a crossover in the short-time short-distance dynamics at low U characterized by ferromagnetic light-cone wavefronts, to a Heisenberg-type behavior at large U featuring antiferromagnetic light cones and spatially period-doubled antiferromagnetism. We find this crossover has largely been completed by U=3. Our results thus provide evidence that, in several aspects, the strong-coupling limit of the Hubbard chain is reached qualitatively already at a relatively modest interaction strength. We discuss experimental candidates for observing the G(r,t) dynamics found at low U.

Mixed-State Entanglement from Local Randomized Measurements

In this work, we propose a method for detecting bipartite entanglement in a many-body mixed state based on estimating moments of the partially transposed density matrix. The estimates are obtained by performing local random measurements on the state, followed by postprocessing using the classical shadows framework. Our method can be applied to any quantum system with single-qubit control. We provide a detailed analysis of the required number of experimental runs, and demonstrate the protocol using existing experimental data [Brydges et al., Science 364, 260 (2019)].

Dynamical properties of a driven dissipative dimerized $S$ =1/2 chain

We consider the dynamical properties of a gapped quantum spin system coupled to the electric field of a laser, which drives the resonant excitation of specific phonon modes that modulate the magnetic interactions. Here, we deduce the quantum master equations governing the time-evolution of both the lattice and spin sectors, by developing a Lindblad formalism with bath operators providing an explicit description of their respective phonon-mediated damping terms. We investigate the nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) of the spin system established by a continuous driving, delineating parameter regimes in driving frequency, damping, and spin-phonon coupling for the establishment of physically meaningful NESS and their related nontrivial properties. Focusing on the regime of generic weak spin-phonon coupling, we characterize the NESS by their frequency and wave-vector content, explore their transient and relaxation behavior, and discuss the energy flow, the system temperature, and the critical role of the type of bath adopted. Our study lays a foundation for the quantitative modeling of experiments currently being designed to control coherent many-body spin states in quantum magnetic materials.

Effects of the dynamical magnetization state on spin transfer

We utilize simulations of electron scattering by a chain of dynamical quantum spins to analyze the interplay between the spin transfer effect and the magnetization dynamics. We show that the complex interactions between the spin-polarized electrons and the dynamical states of the local spins can be decomposed into separate processes involving electron reflection and transmission, as well as absorption and emission of magnons—the quanta of magnetization dynamics. Analysis shows that these processes are substantially constrained by the energy and momentum conservation laws, resulting in a significant dependence of spin transfer on the electron’s energy and the dynamical state of the local spins. Here, our results suggest that exquisite control of spin transfer efficiency and of the resulting dynamical magnetization states may be achievable by tailoring the spectral characteristics of the conduction electrons and of the magnetic systems.

Spontaneously Broken Noninvertible Symmetries in Transverse-Field Ising Qudit Chains

Recent developments have revealed that symmetries need not form a group, but instead can be noninvertible. Here we use analytical arguments and numerical evidence to illuminate how spontaneous symmetry breaking of a noninvertible symmetry is similar yet distinct from ordinary, invertible, symmetry breaking. We consider one-dimensional chains of group-valued qudits, whose local Hilbert space is spanned by elements of a finite group 𝐺 (reducing to ordinary qubits when 𝐺=ℤ 2 ). We construct Ising-type transverse-field Hamiltonians with Rep⁡(𝐺) symmetry whose generators multiply according to the tensor product of irreducible representations (irreps) of the group 𝐺 . For non-Abelian 𝐺 , the symmetry is noninvertible. In the symmetry broken phase there is one ground state per irrep on a closed chain. The symmetry breaking can be detected by local order parameters but, unlike the invertible case, different ground states have distinct entanglement patterns. We show that for each irrep of dimension greater than one the corresponding ground state exhibits string order, entanglement spectrum degeneracies, and has gapless edge modes on an open chain—features usually associated with symmetry-protected topological order. Consequently, domain wall excitations behave as one-dimensional non-Abelian anyons with nontrivial internal Hilbert spaces and fusion rules. Our Letter identifies properties of noninvertible symmetry breaking that existing quantum hardware can probe.

Emergence of Spinons in Layered Trimer Iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10

Spinons are well-known as the elementary excitations of one-dimensional antiferromagnetic chains, but means to realize spinons in higher dimensions is the subject of intense research. Here, we use resonant x-ray scattering to study the layered trimer iridate Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 , which shows no magnetic order down to 0.2 K. An emergent one-dimensional spinon continuum is observed that can be well-described by XXZ spin-1/2 chains with magnetic exchange of ~55 meV and a small Ising-like anisotropy. With 2% isovalent Sr doping, magnetic order appears below TN=130 K along with sharper excitations, indicating that the spinons become more confined in (Ba 1-x Sr x ) 4 Ir 3 O 10 . We propose that the frustrated intra-trimer interactions effectively reduce the system into decoupled spin chains, the subtle balance of which can be easily tipped by perturbations such as chemical doping. Our results put Ba 4 Ir 3 O 10 between the one-dimensional chain and two-dimensional quantum spin liquid scenarios, illustrating a new way to suppress magnetic order and realize fractional spinons.

Weakly coupled alternating S = 1 2 chains in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6

Spin- 1 2 chains with alternating antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) couplings exhibit quantum entanglement as the integer-spin Haldane chains and might be similarly utilized for quantum computations. Such alternating AF-FM chains have been proposed to be realized in the distorted honeycomb lattice compound Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 , but to confirm this picture a comprehensive understanding of the exchange interactions including terms outside of the idealized model is required. Here, we employ neutron scattering to study the spin dynamics in Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 and accurately determine the coupling strengths through the random phase approximation and density functional theory approaches. We find the AF and FM intrachain couplings are the dominant terms in the spin Hamiltonian, while the interchain couplings are AF but perturbative. This hierarchy in the coupling strengths and the alternating signs of the intrachain couplings can be understood through their different exchange paths. Our results establish Na 2 Cu 2 TeO 6 as a weakly coupled alternating AF-FM chain compound and reveal the robustness of the gapped ground state in alternating chains under weak interchain couplings.

Two Distinct Cu(II)-V(IV) Superexchange Interactions with Similar Bond Angles in a Triangular ?CuV2? Fragment

The strength and sign of superexchange interactions are often predicted on the basis of the bond angles between magnetic ions, but complications may arise in situations with a nontrivial arrangement of the magnetic orbitals. We report on a novel molecular tetramer compound [Cu(H2O)dmbpy]2[V2O2F8] (dmbpy = 4,4 '-dimethyl-2,2 ' bipyridyl) that is composed of triangular "CuV2" fragments and displays a spin gap behavior. By combining first-principles calculations and electronic models, we reveal that superexchange Cu-V interactions carry drastically diHerent coupling strengths along two Cu-F-V pathways with comparable bond angles in the triangular "CuV2" fragment. Counterintuitively, their strong disparity is found to originate from the restricted symmetry of the half-filled Cu dx2-y2 orbital stabilized by the crystal field, leading to one dominating antiferromagnetic Cu-V coupling in each fragment. We revisit the magnetic properties of the reported spin-gapped chain compound [enH2]Cu(H2O)2[V2O2F8] (enH2 = ethylene diammonium) containing similar triangular "CuV2" fragments, and the magnetic behavior of the molecular tetramer and the chain compounds is rationalized as that of weakly coupled spin dimers and spin trimers, respectively. This work demonstrates that fundamentally diHerent magnetic couplings can be observed between magnetic ions with similar bond angles in a single spin motif, thus providing a strategy to introduce various exchange interactions combined with low dimensionality in heterometallic Cu(II)-V(IV) compounds.

Universal quantum operation of spin-3/2 Blume-Capel chains

We propose a logical qubit based on the Blume-Capel model: A higher-spin generalization of the Ising chain which allows for an on-site anisotropy-preserving rotational invariance around the Ising axis. We show that such a spin-3/2 Blume-Capel model can also support localized Majorana zero modes at the ends of the chain. Inspired by known braiding protocols of these Majorana zero modes, upon appropriate manipulation of the system parameters, we demonstrate a set of universal gate operations which act on qubits encoded in the doubly degenerate ground states of the chain.
