NASA ground-based and space-based laser ranging systems

Laser ranging is expected to help unlock the mysteries of the earthquake phenomenon by producing unique results of crustal motions of the Earth. The current state of the art and future projections are presented, including principal applications and characteristics of typical systems.

NASA ground-based and space-based laser ranging systems

The development of NASA laser ranging systems is discussed with reference to applications such as orbit determination, gravity-field studies, and analyses of polar motion, earth tides, and tectonic plate motion. Several laser ranging designs are described noting the first satellite laser ranging experiment, the Moblas II and III systems, and the laser ranging satellites presently in orbit. Primary error sources are identified as atmospheric delay, optical signal-to-noise ratios, the electron multiplier, time-interval measurements, and target noise. Plans for Shuttle-based laser ranging systems are reviewed noting simulation studies of 12-day Shuttle missions.

A NASA high-power space-based laser research and applications program

Applications of high power lasers are discussed which might fulfill the needs of NASA missions, and the technology characteristics of laser research programs are outlined. The status of the NASA programs or lasers, laser receivers, and laser propulsion is discussed, and recommendations are presented for a proposed expanded NASA program in these areas. Program elements that are critical are discussed in detail.

Optical materials for space based laser systems

The design features and performance characteristics of a sensitized holmium laser applicable to differential lidar and Doppler windshear measurements are presented, giving attention to the optimal choice of sensitizing/activating dopant ions. This development of a 2-micron region eye-safe laser, where holmium is sensitized by either hulium or erbium, has called for interionic energy transfer processes whose rate will not result in gain-switched pulses that are excessively long for atmospheric lidar and Doppler windshear detection. The application of diamond films for optical component hardening is noted.

Massive Black Holes and the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA)

The goals of the USA mission include both astrophysical investigations and fundamental physics tests. The main astrophysical questions concern the space density, growth, mass function, and surroundings of massive black holes. Thus the crucial issue for the USA mission is the likelihood of observing signals from such sources. Four possible sources of this kind are discussed briefly in this paper. It appears plausible, or even likely. that one or more of these types of sources can be detected and studied by LISA.

Precision Pointing for the Laser Interferometry Space Antenna Mission

This viewgraph presentation discusses requirements for control systems in the design and production of space-based telescopes. Specific topics covered include: pointing control methods, wavefront control methods, vibration control methods and thermal control methods. Control systems on the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb Space Telescope are reviewed. Control system requirements for future space telescopes are also mentioned.

Testing and Characterization of a Prototype Telescope for the Evolved Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (eLISA)

We describe our efforts to fabricate, test and characterize a prototype telescope for the eLISA mission. Much of our work has centered on the modeling and measurement of scattered light performance. This work also builds on a previous demonstration of a high dimensional stability metering structure using particular choices of materials and interfaces. We will discuss ongoing plans to merge these two separate demonstrations into a single telescope design demonstrating both stray light and dimensional stability requirements simultaneously.

Space-Based Lasers for Remote Sensing Applications

There are currently three operational lidar systems orbiting the Earth, the Moon and the planet Mercury gathering scientific data and images to form a better understanding of our Earth and solar system. In this paper we will present an overview of the spacebome laser programs and offer insights into future spacebome lasers for remote sensing applications.

Modeling of proof mass self-gravity field for the Laser Interferometry Space Antenna (LISA)

This paper describes the development of the self-gravity modeling tool used to predict and control the motion of one of the proof masses of the orbiting LISA gravitational wave detector. LISA is a space-borne gravitational wave detector, which is formed by three spacecraft orbiting the Sun and forming the vertices of an equilateral triangle with a side of 5 million km in length. Requirements on the forces and moments, and the force gradients and moment gradients, applied to the proof mass exist. This paper computes these quantities analytically, so that gravitational balancing considerations can now be done effectively.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA): Current plans and prospects for quantum sensing in future space-based gravitational wave observatories

ESA’s third large class mission is a space-based gravitational wave observatory with NASA as a partner. This talk will describe the current plans for this mission, including the expected science, the instrument design, and a schedule for the development and launch. The noise floor of the system will be described and opportunities for improvement, including possible applications os quantum sensing and measurement techniques.
