Mobile antennas for COMETS advanced mobile Satcom experiment

Advanced mobile satellite communication experiments in the Ka-band and the mm-wave will be carried out using the COMETS satellite, which is scheduled for launch in 1997. Mobile antennas will play a much more key role in high frequency systems such as COMETS than in conventional L-band mobile systems. This paper describes three types of antennas which are now being developed by the Communications Research Laboratory (CRL) for the COMETS mobile experiments. One is a mechanically steered waveguide slot array antenna, another is an electronically steered active phased array antenna, and the third is a mechanically steered torus reflector antenna. The first two antennas will be used in the Ka-band, while the latter will be used in the mm-wave.

Hierarchical Phased-Array Antennas Coupled to Al KIDs: A Scalable Architecture for Multi-band Millimeter/Submillimeter Focal Planes

We present the optical characterization of two-scale hierarchical phased-array antenna kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) for millimeter/submillimeter wavelengths. Our KIDs have a lumped-element architecture with parallel plate capacitors and aluminum inductors. The incoming light is received with a hierarchical phased array of slot dipole antennas, split into 4 frequency bands (between 125 GHz and 365 GHz) with on-chip lumped-element band-pass filters, and routed to different KIDs using microstriplines. Individual pixels detect light for the 3 higher-frequency bands (190–365 GHz), and the signals from four individual pixels are coherently summed to create a larger pixel detecting light for the lowest frequency band (125–175 GHz). The spectral response of the band-pass filters was measured using Fourier transform spectroscopy (FTS), the far-field beam pattern of the phased-array antennas was obtained using an infrared source mounted on a 2-axis translating stage, and the optical efficiency of the KIDs was characterized by observing loads at 294 K and 77 K. We report on the results of these three measurements.

A Novel Miniaturized MIMO Microstrip Patch Antenna Array with EBG- and Slot-Loading

A compact four-element multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna array based on the miniaturized mi-crostrip patch is presented. The reduction in array form factor is realized by partially populating the ground plane with elec-tromagnetic band gap (EBG) cells constructed from cross slots, in combination with reactively loading each patch with a slot. The resultant 2 × 2 array system demonstrates excellent inter-element isolation and can be easily fabricated using traditional milling and printing techniques, as it exploits a 2D layout that can be conveniently implemented on two sides of a single-layer substrate, without the need for any via structures. The operation of the array near the 2.5 GHz band is verified with full-wave simulations. The size of the new design is approximately 42% of that employing conventional patch elements.

Ka-band Digitally Beamformed Airborne Radar Using SweepSAR Technique

A paper describes a frequency-scaled SweepSAR demonstration that operates at Ka-Band (35.6 GHz), and closely approximates the DESDynl mission antenna geometry, scaled by 28. The concept relies on the SweepSAR measurement technique. An array of digital receivers captures waveforms from a multiplicity of elements. These are combined using digital beamforming in elevation and SAR processing to produce imagery. Ka-band (35.6 GHz) airborne SweepSAR using array-fed reflector and digital beamforming features eight simultaneous receive beams generated by a 40-cm offset-fed reflector and eight-element active array feed, and eight digital receiver channels with all raw data recorded and later used for beamforming. Illumination of the swath is accomplished using a slotted-waveguide antenna radiating 250 W peak power. This experiment has been used to demonstrate digital beamforming SweepSAR systems.

Thermal Frequency Drift of 3D Printed Microwave Components

Fabrication of microwave slot array antennas and waveguide bandpass and notch filters using 3D printing has significant advantages in terms of speed and cost even for parts with high mechanical complexity. One disadvantage of Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printed, copper plated microwave components is that some SLA resins have a high Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE), quoted in micrometers per meter per degree or 10 -6 per degree. Compared to typically used metals such as aluminum (CTE 24 × 10 -6 ·K -1 ) and copper (CTE 17 × 10 -6 ·K -1 ), SLA resin can have CTE above 100 × 10 -6 ·K -1 . Resonant structures experience significant frequency drift with temperature changes on the order of 10–50 °C. The issue of 3D printed microwave structures changing frequency characteristics significantly with temperature shift has not been addressed or reviewed in current literature. We measured and simulated the effect of temperature change on a slot array, cavity notch filters, and post loaded waveguide bandpass filters. We tested several types of SLA resin, different plating techniques, and also Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) and Binder Infusion metal 3D printing. Performance as a function of temperature is presented for these alternatives.

Synthesis of the antenna pattern for a radiating slot in a metal cylinder

The synthesis of a prescribed far-field pattern by means of a radiating slot in a perfectly conducting infinite circular cylinder is considered. The narrow circumferential slot and the infinite axial slot are studied in detail. In either case, the problem is to find the distribution of the electromagnetic field in the aperture that yields a radiation pattern that is the best mean-square approximation to a given pattern, under certain constraints. Various quality factors for cylindrical models are discussed, and a detailed comparison with the synthesis problem for a planar aperture is performed. It turns out that Rhodes' synthesis method has no equivalent in the cylindrical case, and that the best admissible mean-square approximation to a given pattern may be a very poor approximation in amplitude. However, an iteration scheme is developed in which the phase approximation is sacrificed for the sake of substantially improving the amplitude approximation. Numerical results based on such a scheme are displayed, for prescribed omnidirectional and sectoral patterns.

Low Noise in a Diffusion-Cooled Hot-Electron Mixer at 2.5 THz

The noise performance of a Nb hot-electron bolometer mixer at 2.5 THz has been investigated. The devices are fabricated from a 12-nm-thick Nb film, and have a 0.30 micrometer x 0.15 micrometer in-plane size, thus exploiting diffusion as the electron cooling mechanism. The rf coupling was provided by a twin-slot planar antenna on an elliptical Si lens. The experimentally measured double sideband noise temperature of the receiver was as low as 2750 +/- 250 K with an estimated mixer noise temperature of approximately equal 900 K. The mixer bandwidth derived from both noise bandwidth and IF impedance measurements was approximately equal 1.4 GHz. These results demonstrate the low-noise operation of the diffusion-cooled bolometer mixer above 2 THz.

Improved equivalent circuit for twin slot terahertz receivers

Series-fed coplanar waveguide embedding circuits are being developed for terahertz mixers using, in particular, submicron-sized superconducting devices, such as hot electron bolometers as the nonlinear element. Although these mixers show promising performance, they usually also show a considerable downward shift in the center frequency, when compared with simulations obtained by using simplified models. This makes it very difficult to design low-noise mixers for a given THz frequency. This shiftis principally caused by parasitics due to the extremely small details (in terms of wavelength) of the device, and by the electrical properties of the RF choke filter in the DC/IF line. In this paper, we present an improved equivalent network model of such mixer circuits which agrees with measured results at THz frequencies and we propose a new set of THz bolometric mixers that have been fabricated and are currently being tested.
