Mechanical characteristics of stability-bleed valves for a supersonic inlet

Mechanical characteristics of a set of direct-operated relief valves used in a throat-bypass stability-bleed system designed for the YF-12 aircraft inlet are described. A comparison of data taken before and after the windtunnel tests (at room temperature) showed that both the effective spring rate and the piston friction had decreased during the wind tunnel tests. In neither the effective spring rate nor the piston friction was the magnitude of change great enough to cause significant impairment of overall system effectiveness. No major valve mechanical problems were encountered in any of the tests. During high temperature bench tests, piston frictional drag increased. The friction returned to its initial room temperature value when the stability-bleed valve was disassembled and reassembled. The problem might be solved by using a different material for the piston sleeve bearing and the piston rings.

Plug cluster module demonstration

The low pressure, film cooled rocket engine design concept developed during two previous ALRC programs was re-evaluated for application as a module for a plug cluster engine capable of performing space shuttle OTV missions. The nominal engine mixture ratio was 5.5 and the engine life requirements were 1200 thermal cycles and 10 hours total operating life. The program consisted of pretest analysis; engine tests, performed using residual components; and posttest analysis. The pretest analysis indicated that operation of the operation of the film cooled engine at O/F = 5.5 was feasible. During the engine tests, steady state wall temperature and performance measurement were obtained over a range of film cooling flow rates, and the durability of the engine was demonstrated by firing the test engine 1220 times at a nominal performance ranging from 430 - 432 seconds. The performance of the test engine was limited by film coolant sleeve damage which had occurred during previous testing. The post-test analyses indicated that the nominal performance level can be increased to 436 seconds.

Mechanical-load indicator

By rotation of washerlike part, mechanical indicator shows when predetermined compression or tension load has been reached. Indicator consists of bolt, sleeve, load-indicating washer, and nut. Besides application as load indicator, device has uses as remote indicator of mechanical action. Rotating washer can also act as sequencer, signaling action to begin upon attainment of certain load. It can be used, for example, to initiate work cycle after stored energy has been built up in hydraulic or pneumatic power equipment. It can also be used as remote, nonelectrical switch in hazardous environments.

Simplified installation of thrust bearings

Special handling sleeve, key to method of installing thrust bearings, was developed for assembling bearings on shaft of low-pressure oxygen turbo-pump. Method eliminates cooling and vacuum-drying steps which saves time, while also eliminating possibility of corrosion formation. Procedure saves energy because it requires no liquid nitrogen for cooling shaft and no natural gas or electric power for operating vacuum oven.

GEOS axial booms

A booms and mechanisms subsystem was designed, developed, and qualified for the geostationary scientific satellite GEOS. Part of this subsystem consist of four axial booms consisting of one pair of 1 m booms and one pair of 2.5 m booms. Each of these booms is carrying one bird cage electric field sensor. Alignment accuracy requirements led to a telescopic type solution. Deployment is performed by pressurized nitrogen. At deployment in orbit two of these booms showed some anomalies and one of these two deployed only about 80%. Following this malfunction a detailed failure investigation was performed resulting in a design modification of some critical components as release mechanism, guide sleeves of the telescopic elements, and pressure system.

Ceramic/metal seals

Design criteria are discussed for a hermetic seal capable of withstanding the 450 C operating temperature of a lithium-metal sulfide battery system. A mechanical seal consisting of two high strength alloy metal sleeves welded or brazed to a conductor assembly and pressed onto a ceramic is described. The conductor center passes through the ceramic but is not sealed to it. The seal is effected on the outside of the taper where the tubular part is pressed down over and makes contact.

Low cost fabrication of graphite epoxy column elements for large space structures

A procedure for fabricating graphite epoxy column elements used in the construction of large space platforms is described. Dry fiber is wound on a tapered aluminum mandrel in the LMSC vertical winding machine, and resin is injected between the mandrel and an outer sleeve. The winding and injection take place at elevated temperature to minimize the thermal expansion problems that arise in curing a tube on an aluminum mandrel when the end fittings are integrally wound.

Tube-welder aids

Simple tools assist in setting up and welding tubes. Welder aids can be easily made to fit given tube diameter. Finished set can be used repeatedly to fix electrode-to-weld gap and mark sleeve and joint positions. Tools are readily made in tube-manufacturing plants and pay for themselves in short time in reduced labor costs and quality control: Conventional measurements are too slow for mass production and are prone to errors.

Interlocking wedge joint is easily assembled

Wedge joint links structural members in manual, remote, or automated assemblies. Joint is simple enough to be assembled by undersea divers, workers in nuclear reactors, and other wearing gloves or bulky clothing. Combination of wedging angles on parts overcomes structural misalinements and forces assembly into true position as locking sleeve moves into place. Joint transmits tension, compression, bending moments and torsion and is inherently insensitive to thermal excursions, vibration, and machining tolerance buildup.

Liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen auxiliary power system thruster investigation

The design, fabrication, and demonstration of a 111 newton (25 lb) thrust, integrated auxiliary propulsion system (IAPS) thruster for use with LH2/LO2 propellants is described. Hydrogen was supplied at a temperature range of 22 to 33 K (40 to 60 R), and oxygen from 89 to 122 K (160 to 220 R). The thruster was designed to operate in both pulse mode and steady-state modes for vehicle attitude control, space maneuvering, and as an abort backup in the event of failure of the main propulsion system. A dual-sleeve, tri-axial injection system was designed that utilizes a primary injector/combustor where 100 percent of the oxygen and 8 percent of the hydrogen is introduced; a secondary injector/combustor where 45 percent of the hydrogen is introduced to mix with the primary combustor gases; and a boundary layer injector that uses the remaining 45 percent of the hydrogen to cool the thrust throat/nozzle design. Hot-fire evaluation of this thruster with a BLC injection distance of 2.79 cm (1.10 in.) indicated that a specific impulse value of 390 sec can be attained using a coated molybdenum thrust chamber. Pulse mode tests indicated that a chamber pressure buildup to 90 percent thrust can be achieved in a time on the order of 48 msec. Some problems were encountered in achieving ignition of each pulse during pulse trains. This was interpreted to indicate that a higher delivered spark energy level ( 100 mJ) would be required to maintain ignition reliability of the plasma torch ignition system under the extra 'cold' conditions resulting during pulsing.

Redundant motor drive system

A drive system characterized by a base supporting a pair of pillars arranged in spaced parallelism, a shaft extended between and supported by the pillars for rotation about the longitudinal axis thereof, a worm gear affixed to the shaft and supported in coaxial relation therewith is described. A bearing housing of a sleeve like configuration is concentrically related to the shaft and is supported thereby for free rotation. A first and a second quiescent drive train, alternatively activatable, is provided for imparting rotation into said bearing housing. Each of the drive trains is characterized by a selectively energizable motor connected to a spur gear.

Continued life test results for an ensemble of CO2 lasers

The life test results of five 16 low pressure CW CO2 lasers with a nominal output of 1 watt are presented. One laser quickly died while the remaining four lasers reached half power output at 38,000, 40,000, 40,000 and 40,000 hours respectively. These results show the potential for a 50,000 hour laser while the average life of the 16 tested lasers was 22,500 hours. It is further indicated that the cathode sputtering products, which settle on the glass walls of the cathode sleeve, form an increasingly heavy film as the laser ages.

Surface temperatures in sliding systems - A finite element analysis

Finite element equations are developed for studying surface temperatures resulting from frictional heating in sliding systems. The equations include the effect of velocity of moving components, an effect which is found to be quite significant, even at low sliding velocities. A program was written using the equations and it was applied to the study of surface temperatures in two different sliding systems: dry or boundary lubricated sleeve bearings and a labyrinth gas path seal configuration. Very good agreement was achieved between analytical predictions using the program and experimental temperature measurements. The program was used to study the influence of various material parameters on surface temperatures in the two sliding systems.

Combustion experiments in a zero-gravity laboratory

One of the payloads that the Shuttle will carry into low-earth orbit is the Spacelab, a laboratory designed by a European consortium which will enable scientist-astronauts to conduct research in a shirt-sleeve environment. The typical flight of seven days will permit numerous experiments to be conducted that take advantage of long-term reduced gravity. A description is presented of plans for the conduction of Spacelab experiments which are related to the study of combustion, taking into account also investigations performed in the preparation of such experiments. Attention is given to an overview study of combustion experiments in a space laboratory, droplet burning, flammability limits in a standard tube, the combustion of particle clouds, smoldering combustion in porous fuels, liquid pool burning, and combustion experimentation aboard the space transportation system.
