Online State Estimation for Time-Varying Systems

The paper investigates the problem of estimating the state of a time-varying system with a linear measurement model; in particular, the paper considers the case where the number of measurements available can be smaller than the number of states. In lieu of a batch linear least-squares (LS) approach well-suited for static networks, where a sufficient number of measurements could be collected to obtain a full-rank design matrix the paper proposes an online algorithm to estimate the possibly time-varying state by processing measurements as and when available. The design of the algorithm hinges on a generalized LS cost augmented with a proximal-point-type regularization. With the solution of the regularized LS problem available in closed-form, the online algorithm is written as a linear dynamical system where the state is updated based on the previous estimate and based on the new available measurements. Conditions under which the algorithmic steps are in fact a contractive mapping are shown, and bounds on the estimation error are derived for different noise models. Numerical simulations are provided to corroborate the analytical findings.

Raw Lidar and Camera Data Synchronized with Precipitation and Present Weather Data

As part of the sensor characterization task of the SMART 2.0 project, this dataset includes raw data from three spinning lidars ([Ouster OS2-128](https://ouster.com/products/scanning-lidar/os2-sensor/), [Velodyne Puck (VLP-16)](https://velodynelidar.com/products/puck/), and [Velodyne Ultra Puck (VLP-32)](https://velodynelidar.com/products/ultra-puck/)), one camera ([Mako G-319](https://www.alliedvision.com/en/camera-selector/detail/mako/g-319/)), and one present weather sensor ([Vaisala FD-70](https://www.vaisala.com/en/products/weather-environmental-sensors/forward-scatter-fd70)). All data were synchronized, with the log start time indicated in the file name (HHMMSS). The data can be filtered by date, log time (HHMMSS), sensor, frame ID, and weather classification. These data were gathered statically at the Argonne Testbed for Multiscale Observational Science (ATMOS). Two target stop signs were placed in view of the sensors to contribute a target for comparing sensor data under different conditions. The weather data for each day are stored in netCDF “.nc” files. The lidar data contain the X, Y, Z, intensity, reflectivity, and ring from Ouster OS2-128 rev6, Velodyne VLP-16, and Velodyne VLP-32 lidars. ![raw lidar image](LiDAR_pointcloud_ATMOS.png)

Fusing 4D coded thermoacoustic, electromagnetic, and acoustic/seismic wavefields for subsurface characterization and imaging of fluid flow in porous media

This research program aims to address critical challenges in subsurface exploration and monitoring of anthropogenic CO 2 storage by advancing quantitative dynamic sensing and imaging technologies. Two primary applications—petrophysical assessment of hydrocarbon reservoirs (C1) and CO 2 storage monitoring (C2)—require significant innovation to overcome three barriers (B1-B3). These barriers include the need for enhanced understanding of interactions between physical wave fields (thermoacoustic, electromagnetic, acoustic/seismic, and X-ray) with fluid-filled porous media, the development of multi-sensor data fusion for real-time imaging, and upscaling microscopic quantum effects for macroscopic observations. The project’s objective was to establish a unified 4D coded sensing and imaging approach, integrating EM, AC/S, and TA fields for multi-scale and multi-physics material characterization and subsurface imaging.

Fuzzy Logic Path Planning System for Collision Avoidance by an Autonomous Rover Vehicle

Systems already developed at JSC have shown the benefits of applying fuzzy logic control theory to space related operations. Four major issues are addressed that are associated with developing an autonomous collision avoidance subsystem within a path planning system designed for application in a remote, hostile environment that does not lend itself well to remote manipulation of the vehicle involved through Earth-based telecommunication. A good focus for this is unmanned exploration of the surface of Mars. The uncertainties involved indicate that robust approaches such as fuzzy logic control are particularly appropriate. The four major issues addressed are: (1) avoidance of a single fuzzy moving obstacle; (2) back off from a dead end in a static obstacle environment; (3) fusion of sensor data to detect obstacles; and (4) options for adaptive learning in a path planning system.

Advanced information processing system: The Army Fault-Tolerant Architecture detailed design overview

The Army Avionics Research and Development Activity (AVRADA) is pursuing programs that would enable effective and efficient management of large amounts of situational data that occurs during tactical rotorcraft missions. The Computer Aided Low Altitude Night Helicopter Flight Program has identified automated Terrain Following/Terrain Avoidance, Nap of the Earth (TF/TA, NOE) operation as key enabling technology for advanced tactical rotorcraft to enhance mission survivability and mission effectiveness. The processing of critical information at low altitudes with short reaction times is life-critical and mission-critical necessitating an ultra-reliable/high throughput computing platform for dependable service for flight control, fusion of sensor data, route planning, near-field/far-field navigation, and obstacle avoidance operations. To address these needs the Army Fault Tolerant Architecture (AFTA) is being designed and developed. This computer system is based upon the Fault Tolerant Parallel Processor (FTPP) developed by Charles Stark Draper Labs (CSDL). AFTA is hard real-time, Byzantine, fault-tolerant parallel processor which is programmed in the ADA language. This document describes the results of the Detailed Design (Phase 2 and 3 of a 3-year project) of the AFTA development. This document contains detailed descriptions of the program objectives, the TF/TA NOE application requirements, architecture, hardware design, operating systems design, systems performance measurements and analytical models.

Integrating Oil Debris and Vibration Measurements for Intelligent Machine Health Monitoring

A diagnostic tool for detecting damage to gears was developed. Two different measurement technologies, oil debris analysis and vibration were integrated into a health monitoring system for detecting surface fatigue pitting damage on gears. This integrated system showed improved detection and decision-making capabilities as compared to using individual measurement technologies. This diagnostic tool was developed and evaluated experimentally by collecting vibration and oil debris data from fatigue tests performed in the NASA Glenn Spur Gear Fatigue Rig. An oil debris sensor and the two vibration algorithms were adapted as the diagnostic tools. An inductance type oil debris sensor was selected for the oil analysis measurement technology. Gear damage data for this type of sensor was limited to data collected in the NASA Glenn test rigs. For this reason, this analysis included development of a parameter for detecting gear pitting damage using this type of sensor. The vibration data was used to calculate two previously available gear vibration diagnostic algorithms. The two vibration algorithms were selected based on their maturity and published success in detecting damage to gears. Oil debris and vibration features were then developed using fuzzy logic analysis techniques, then input into a multi sensor data fusion process. Results show combining the vibration and oil debris measurement technologies improves the detection of pitting damage on spur gears. As a result of this research, this new diagnostic tool has significantly improved detection of gear damage in the NASA Glenn Spur Gear Fatigue Rigs. This research also resulted in several other findings that will improve the development of future health monitoring systems. Oil debris analysis was found to be more reliable than vibration analysis for detecting pitting fatigue failure of gears and is capable of indicating damage progression. Also, some vibration algorithms are as sensitive to operational effects as they are to damage. Another finding was that clear threshold limits must be established for diagnostic tools. Based on additional experimental data obtained from the NASA Glenn Spiral Bevel Gear Fatigue Rig, the methodology developed in this study can be successfully implemented on other geared systems.
