Confronting a set of Skyrme and $\chi _{EFT}$ predictions for the crust of neutron stars

With the improved accuracy of neutron star observational data, it is necessary to derive new equation of state where the crust and the core are consistently calculated within a unified approach. For this purpose we describe non-uniform matter in the crust of neutron stars employing a compressible liquid-drop model, where the bulk and the neutron fluid terms are given from the same model as the one describing uniform matter present in the core. We then generate a set of fifteen unified equations of state for cold catalyzed neutron stars built on realistic modelings of the nuclear interaction, which belongs to two main groups: the first one derives from the phenomenological Skyrme interaction and the second one from χEFT Hamiltonians. The confrontation of these model predictions allows us to investigate the model dependence for the crust properties, and in particular the effect of neutron matter at low density. Here, the new set of unified equations of state is available at the CompOSE repository.

Extraction and validation of a new set of CMS pythia8 tunes from underlying-event measurements

New sets of CMS underlying-event parameters ("tunes") are presented for the PYTHIA8 event generator. These tunes use the NNPDF3.1 parton distribution functions (PDFs) at leading (LO), next-to-leading (NLO), or next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) orders in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, and the strong coupling evolution at LO or NLO. Measurements of charged-particle multiplicity and transverse momentum densities at various hadron collision energies are fit simultaneously to determine the parameters of the tunes. Comparisons of the predictions of the new tunes are provided for observables sensitive to the event shapes at LEP, global underlying event, soft multiparton interactions, and double-parton scattering contributions. In addition, comparisons are made for observables measured in various specific processes, such as multijet, Drell-Yan, and top quark-antiquark pair production including jet substructure observables. The simulation of the underlying event provided by the new tunes is interfaced to a higher-order matrix-element calculation. For the first time, predictions from PYTHIA8 obtained with tunes based on NLO or NNLO PDFs are shown to reliably describe minimum-bias and underlying-event data with a similar level of agreement to predictions from tunes using LO PDF sets.

Recognition Method of Vehicle Cluster Situation Based on Set Pair Logic considering Driver’s Cognition

The recognition of vehicle cluster situations is one of the critical technologies of advanced driving, such as intelligent driving and automated driving. The accurate recognition of vehicle cluster situations is helpful for behavior decision‐making safe and efficient. In order to accurately and objectively identify the vehicle cluster situation, a vehicle cluster situation model is proposed based on the interval number of set pair logic. The proposed model can express the traffic environment’s knowledge considering each vehicle’s characteristics, grouping relationships, and traffic flow characteristics in the target vehicle’s interest region. A recognition method of vehicle cluster situation is designed to infer the traffic environment and driving conditions based on the connection number of set pair logic. In the proposed model, the uncertainty of the driver’s cognition is fully considered. In the recognition method, the relative uncertainty and relative certainty of driver’s cognition, traffic information, and vehicle cluster situation are fully considered. The verification results show that the proposed recognition method of vehicle cluster situations can realize accurate and objective recognition. The proposed anthropomorphic recognition method could provide a basis for vehicle autonomous behavior decision‐making.

Level set topology optimization in Firedrake

Lestofire is an academic software for the automated design of engineering components. It finds the optimal geometry of a system to minimize a given cost function while constrained by a given set of physics equations. Using a level set function to describe the geometry, lestofire uses shapes derivative to evolve the system until its optimal shape. It leverages the compilation of variational forms in Firedrake (https://www.firedrakeproject.org/) and the automated calculation of shape derivatives via pyadjoint (http://www.dolfin-adjoint.or/en/latest/) to allow fast prototyping of different physics, cost functions and design parametrizations.

Achieving robust somatic mutation detection with deep learning models derived from reference data sets of a cancer sample

Accurate detection of somatic mutations is challenging but critical in understanding cancer formation, progression, and treatment. We recently proposed NeuSomatic, the first deep convolutional neural network-based somatic mutation detection approach, and demonstrated performance advantages on in silico data. In this study, we use the first comprehensive and well-characterized somatic reference data sets from the SEQC2 consortium to investigate best practices for using a deep learning framework in cancer mutation detection. Using the high-confidence somatic mutations established for a cancer cell line by the consortium, we identify the best strategy for building robust models on multiple data sets derived from samples representing real scenarios, for example, a model trained on a combination of real and spike-in mutations had the highest average performance. The strategy identified in our study achieved high robustness across multiple sequencing technologies for fresh and FFPE DNA input, varying tumor/normal purities, and different coverages, with significant superiority over conventional detection approaches in general, as well as in challenging situations such as low coverage, low variant allele frequency, DNA damage, and difficult genomic regions.

Uncertain of uncertainties? A comparison of uncertainty quantification metrics for chemical data sets

Abstract With the increasingly more important role of machine learning (ML) models in chemical research, the need for putting a level of confidence to the model predictions naturally arises. Several methods for obtaining uncertainty estimates have been proposed in recent years but consensus on the evaluation of these have yet to be established and different studies on uncertainties generally uses different metrics to evaluate them. We compare three of the most popular validation metrics (Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, the negative log likelihood (NLL) and the miscalibration area) to the error-based calibration introduced by Levi et al. ( Sensors 2022 , 22 , 5540). Importantly, metrics such as the negative log likelihood (NLL) and Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient bear little information in themselves. We therefore introduce reference values obtained through errors simulated directly from the uncertainty distribution. The different metrics target different properties and we show how to interpret them, but we generally find the best overall validation to be done based on the error-based calibration plot introduced by Levi et al. Finally, we illustrate the sensitivity of ranking-based methods (e.g. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient) towards test set design by using the same toy model ferent test sets and obtaining vastly different metrics (0.05 vs. 0.65).

EGS Collab Testbed 1: Second Set Tracer Test Results

The EGS Collab project is developing ~10-20 m-scale field sites where fracture stimulation and flow models can be validated against controlled, small-scale, in-situ experiments. The first multi-well experimental site was established at the 4850 level in the Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, where hydraulic fractures were created at an injection well drilled sub-horizontal from the drift. This file contains the second set of tracer data (also include the data uploaded previously, https://gdr.openei.org/submissions/1128) for the EGS Collab testbed. The tracer tests were conducted during October 2018 - November 2019. Injected tracers include DNA, C-dots (fluorescein nano particles), fluorescein, rhodamine-b, sodium chloride, lithium bromide and cesium iodine. The tracers have been detected in three flowing wells located about 7.5 to 9 meters away from the injection interval. The tracer breakthrough curves from these locations have been adjusted to account for the residence time in the injection and production tubing. The details about the tracer test can be found in Background and Methods of Tracer Tests (Mattson et al. (2019,a,b)) (also included in this package). SPANet: Generalized permutationless set assignment for particle physics using symmetry preserving attention

The creation of unstable heavy particles at the Large Hadron Collider is the most direct way to address some of the deepest open questions in physics. Collisions typically produce variable-size sets of observed particles which have inherent ambiguities complicating the assignment of observed particles to the decay products of the heavy particles. Current strategies for tackling these challenges in the physics community ignore the physical symmetries of the decay products and consider all possible assignment permutations and do not scale to complex configurations. Attention based deep learning methods for sequence modelling have achieved state-of-the-art performance in natural language processing, but they lack built-in mechanisms to deal with the unique symmetries found in physical set-assignment problems. We introduce a novel method for constructing symmetry-preserving attention networks which reflect the problem's natural invariances to efficiently find assignments without evaluating all permutations. This general approach is applicable to arbitrarily complex configurations and significantly outperforms current methods, improving reconstruction efficiency between 19% - 35% on typical benchmark problems while decreasing inference time by two to five orders of magnitude on the most complex events, making many important and previously intractable cases tractable. A full code repository containing a general library, the specific configuration used, and a complete dataset release, are available at https://github.com/Alexanders101/SPANet

PMC$_\infty$: Infinite-Order Scale-Setting method using the Principle of Maximum Conformality and preserving the Intrinsic Conformality

We show results for Thrust and C-parameter in e^+ e^- e + e − annihilation to 3 jets obtained using the recently developed new method for eliminating the scale ambiguity and the scheme dependence in pQCD namely the Infinite-Order Scale-Setting method using the Principle of Maximum Conformality (PMC _\infty ∞ ). This method preserves an important underlying property of gauge theories: intrinsic Conformality (iCF). It leads to a remarkably efficient method to eliminate the conventional renormalization scale ambiguity at any order in pQCD. A comparison with Conventional Scale Setting method (CSS) is also shown.

A Guided Approach to Setting up Your Workstation at Home [Slides]

Due to COVID-19 LANL has moved to a reality where most people are telecommuting from their homes and social distancing measures require a new normal. This requires the challenge of setting up an at home workstation to be as ergonomically friendly as possible. Sometimes space within the home is limited and office space may double as a dining space, kitchen counter or general use area. Other times, a desk and chair are present, but may not have the adjustability needed to provide a suitable long-term work environment. When setting up the home work environment remember to implement ergonomics basics.

Machine learning to generate gridded extreme precipitation data sets for global land areas with limited in situ measurements

There is a strong need for gridded observational data sets that describe the climatology of extreme precipitation across the globe; such data sets are critical for quantifying precipitation extremes and their corresponding influence on large perturbations on surface and groundwater systems and flooding. Machine learning (ML) methods can be used to generate pseudo in situ measurements of the climatology of extreme precipitation for land regions with poor sampling by matching relevant geographic (e.g., orography) and atmospheric (e.g., surface temperature, precipitation, and pressure) variables for densely sampled regions and those with limited geographic sampling.

SCEPTRE 2.2 Angular Quadrature Sets

This document includes details of the angular quadrature sets available in SCEPTRE for performing numerical integrations in the angular phase space. The angular dependence of the boundary and fixed-source terms an d initial angular flux are specified by angular index rather than by direction. It is, therefore, necessary to know the mapping from a specific direction to a direction index. This document includes angular quadrature weights and direction cosines for most of the quadrature sets available in SCEPTRE.

Alpha Spectrometry Results for Groundwater Samples Collected in Northern Iraq and a Summary of the Environmental Setting of the Adaya Burial Site

The Radiation Protection Center (RPC) of the Iraqi Ministry of Environment continues to evaluate the potential health impacts associated with the Adaya Burial Site, which is located 33 kilometers (20.5 miles) southwest of Mosul. This report documents the radiological analyses of 16 groundwater samples collected from wells located in the vicinity of the Adaya Burial Site and at other sites in northern Iraq. The Adaya Burial Site is a high-risk dump site because a large volume of radioactive material and contaminated soil is located on an unsecure hillside above the village of Tall ar Ragrag. The uranium activities for the 16 water samples in northern Iraq are considered to be naturally occurring and do not indicate artificial (man-made) contamination. With one exception, the alpha spectrometry results for the 16 wells that were sampled in 2019 indicate that the water quality concerning the three uranium isotopes (Uranium-233/234, Uranium-235/236, and Uranium-238) was acceptable for potable purposes (drinking and cooking). However, Well 7 in Mosul had a Uranium-233/234 activity concentration that slightly exceeded the World Health Organization guidance level. Eight of the 16 wells are located in the villages of Tall ar Ragrag and Adaya and had naturally occurring uranium concentrations. Wells in the villages of Tall ar Ragrag and Adaya are located near the Adaya Burial Site and should be sampled on an annual schedule. The list of groundwater analytes should include metals, total uranium, isotopic uranium, gross alpha/beta, gamma spectroscopy, organic compounds, and standard water quality parameters. Our current understanding of the hydrogeologic setting in the vicinity of the Adaya Burial Site is solely based on villager's domestic wells, topographic maps, and satellite imagery. To better understand the hydrogeologic setting, a Groundwater Monitoring Program needs to be developed and should include the installation of twelve groundwater monitoring wells in the vicinity of Tall ar Ragrag and the Adaya Burial Site. Characterization of the limestone aquifer and overlying alluvium is needed. RPC should continue to support health assessments for the villagers in Tall ar Ragrag and Adaya. Collecting samples for surface water (storm water), airborne dust, vegetation, and washway sediment should be conducted on a routine basis. Human access to the Adaya Burial Site needs to be strictly limited. Livestock access on or near the burial site needs to be eliminated. The surface-water exposure pathway is likely a greater threat than the groundwater exposure pathway. Installation of a surface-water diversion or collection system is recommended in order to reduce the potential for humans and livestock to come in contact with contaminated water and sediment. To reduce exposure to villagers, groundwater treatment should be considered if elevated uranium or other contaminants are detected in drinking water. Installing water-treatment systems would likely be quicker to accomplish than remediation and excavation of the Adaya Burial Site. The known potential for human exposure to uranium and metals (such as arsenic, chromium, selenium, and strontium) at the Adaya Burial Site is serious. Additional characterization , mitigation, and remediation efforts should be given a high priority.

How can a diverse set of integral and semi-integral measurements inform identification of discrepant nuclear data? [Slides]

Importance of nuclear data to bias changed significantly when including diverse measurement sets. LLNL pulsed sphere measurements provided information for 9 Be nuclear data above 2 MeV and subcritical benchmarks provided information for 240 Pu nuclear data between 100 keV and 10 MeV. Pulsed sphere leakage spectra and neutron noise observables are differently sensitive to nuclear data compared to critical benchmarks. Leakage spectra are sensitive to nuclear data above 5 MeV. Count rate and Feynman Y are more sensitive to nuclear data. A change in bias can help evaluators identify discrepant nuclear data. In the future, EUCLID plans to perform RAFIEKI analysis with additional benchmark and measurement sets.

High-Resolution Wind Resource Data Set of the Greater Puerto Rico Region

In February 2022, the U.S. Department of Energy and six national laboratories launched the Puerto Rico Grid Resilience and Transitions to 100% Renewable Energy Study (PR100). PR100 aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of possible pathways for Puerto Rico's energy future, with a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2050. As a part of the renewable energy potential assessment in this project, we developed 20 years (2001-2020) of data using a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model for onshore and offshore wind resource assessment for the Puerto Rico. The research steps in developing the long-term wind resource data sets based on the NWP model were: 1. Model wind resource based on the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model. 2. Develop WRF model configurations for Puerto Rico. 3. Test WRF with 11 different physics parameterizations for planetary boundary layer (PBL). 4. Assess WRF output from the different PBL schemes against observations. 5. Select a final model configuration which can produce the modeled wind speed with sufficient accuracy. 6. Produce 20 years wind resource data sets for Puerto Rico region. In the first stage of our framework for developing wind resource data, we developed a WRF model configuration using two nested domains (9 km and 3 km) to cover Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands and downscale the ERA5 reanalysis data (0.25 degrees x 0.25 degrees; hourly interval) to a 3-km domain. For the second stage, we implemented one-year simulations focused on using 11 different PBL physics parameterizations to find a combination of WRF physics parameterizations that could provide accurately modeled wind speed for Puerto Rico. We also analyzed the sensitivity of the modeled wind speed to PBL schemes for onshore and offshore locations. The WRF output resulting from the 11 WRF experiments using different PBL parameterizations were evaluated against observations obtained from the National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) as well as at hub height for a location for which measurements were available. A final model setup selected through the validation with observational data was used to produce 20 years of data with 3-km spatial and 5-minute temporal resolution. The WRF model output was post-processed to include wind profiles and basic atmospheric variables in a format that can be easily used for downstream modeling. The 20 years of wind resource data will be made available through NREL and support the estimation of wind energy development costs for the PR100 study.
