Data-Driven State of Health Estimation for Second-Life Batteries Using Interpolated Synthetic Data and Feature Selection

Accurate estimation of the State of Health (SOH) for second-life batteries (SLBs) is crucial given their increasing use in energy storage applications. Precise SOH prediction is essential for safe operation and robust battery management systems. A major challenge is the limited availability of datasets for building reliable degradation models. To address this, synthetic data generation through linear interpolation is performed to extend the available data, making it more representative of real-world battery operating conditions. By analyzing feature correlation with SOH, the most relevant features are selected for the model. The proposed approach employs a convolutional neural network (CNN) model trained on this interpolated, feature-selected dataset, using time series data of voltage, temperature, and current over a cycle. By focusing on highly correlated features, the model achieves over 95% accuracy, with mean absolute error and root mean squared error up to 2.27% and 2.64%, respectively, in SOH estimation for two battery datasets tested. These results highlight the potential of combining synthetic data generation and feature selection to enhance SOH predictions, showcasing the superior performance of the proposed CNN model for both new batteries and SLBs.

Techno-Economic Assessments of Second-Life Batteries for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

When electric vehicle (EV) batteries degrade below a certain capacity, they may no longer be suitable for automotive use but can be repurposed as second-life batteries (SLBs) for other applications, such as EV charging stations. When integrated with photovoltaic (PV) systems, SLB can store surplus solar energy, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering operational costs. This paper presents a novel techno-economic assessment framework for deploying SLBs in combination with PV in grid-connected EV charging stations. The proposed framework integrates the value proposition, charging station operation, optimal dispatch strategies, battery degradation modeling, input data requirements, and detailed procedures for generating key economic performance metrics. Insightful analyses are performed to assess the performance of SLBs in comparison to new batteries across various cost scenarios. The results indicate that SLBs become financially attractive when their cost is 40% or lower than new batteries.

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen‐Bond Effects of Second‐Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins**

Abstract Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. Here, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO 2 RR and enables the disentangling of second‐sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe‐ ortho ‐im(H) , which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen‐bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO 2 binding affinity by 25‐fold and CO 2 RR activity by 2000‐fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin ( Fe‐TPP ). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through‐space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO 2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

Toward Complete Transformation of Sodium Polysulfides by Regulating the Second-Shell Coordinating Environment of Atomically Dispersed Fe

Room temperature sodium-sulfur (RT Na-S) batteries are highly competitive as potential energy storage devices. Nevertheless, their actually achieved reversible capacities are far below the theoretical value due to incomplete transformation of polysulfides. Herein, atomically dispersed Fe-N/S active center by regulating the second-shell coordinating environment of Fe single atom is proposed. The Fe-N4S2 coordination structure with enhanced local electronic concentration around the Fermi level is revealed via synchrotron radiation X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and theoretical calculations, which can not only significantly promote the transformation kinetics of polysulfides, but induce uniform Na deposition for dendrite-free Na anode. Here as a result, the obtained S cathode delivers a high initial reversible capacity of 1590 mAh g-1, nearly the theoretical value. Here this work opens up a new avenue to facilitate the complete transformation of polysulfides for RT Na-S batteries.

Converting Second‐Order Saddle Points to Transition States: New Principles for the Design of 4π Photoswitches

Abstract Molecular photoswitches have demonstrated potential for storing solar energy at the molecular level, with power densities comparable to commercial batteries and hydroelectric energy storage. However, development of efficient photoswitches is hindered by limitations in cyclability and optical properties of existing materials. We here demonstrate that certain limitations in photoswitches based on electrocyclizations stem from the issue of controlling competition between Woodward‐Hoffmann allowed and forbidden pathways. Our approach moves beyond the traditional view of activation barriers and reveals that second‐order saddle points are crucial in dictating the competition between disrotatory and conrotatory pathways. These insights suggest new opportunities to manipulate the competition between these pathways through geometric constraints, fundamentally altering the connectivity of the potential energy surface. Our study also emphasizes the necessity of multi‐reference methods and the need to conduct higher‐dimensional explorations for competing pathways beyond photoswitch design.

Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using Rhenium(I) Tricarbonyl Complexes with Bipyridyl-Type Ligands with and without Second Coordination Sphere Effects

In this study, the effect of phenyl, phenol, aniline, amino, and CF 3 substituents of the 2,2'-bipyridine ligand in fac-ReCl(L)(CO) 3 (L=2,2'-bipyridine derivative) catalysts on photochemical CO 2 reduction in dimethylacetamide is examined, in order to understand the structure-function relationships and to compare the catalytic activities with the previously published electrochemical results. All complexes including ReCl(bpy)(CO) 3 have similar excited-state lifetimes and emission spectra, but complex 1 with the Ph-NH 2 moiety exhibits a significantly larger molar absorption coefficient for its metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) band. All complexes we tested produce CO with only a negligible amount of H 2 and formate in self-sensitized systems in the presence of triethanolamine (TEOA) and in some cases, BIH (1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzo[d]-imidazole). The presence of the Ph-NH 2 moiety (complex 1) has a beneficial effect on both electrochemical and photochemical activity, allowing a turnover number (TON) of 32 and 120 for photochemical CO production (without and with BIH, respectively). In the case of the Ph-OH group in the second coordination sphere (complexes 4 and 6), these complexes are active for photochemical CO 2 reduction, despite the formation of a stable 6-coordinate Re-OPh intermediate via reductive deprotonation as previously observed under electrochemical conditions. Overall, BIH accelerates the rate of formation of the one-electron reduced species (OERS) of the Re catalysts and allows higher turnover frequency (TOF) and TON for CO formation. The X-ray structures of complexes 1 and 4 were determined to have distorted octahedral Re centres, and show π-π stacking interactions with neighboring molecules as well as intramolecular hydrogen bonds to the internal chloride ligands. The unusually high absorptivity of the MLCT absorption of complex 1 has been explained by TD-DFT calculations.

SNAPSHOT USA 2020: A second coordinated national camera trap survey of the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic

Managing wildlife populations in the face of global change requires regular data on the abundance and distribution of wild animals, but acquiring these over appropriate spatial scales in a sustainable way has proven challenging. Here, in this study, we present the data from Snapshot USA 2020, a second annual national mammal survey of the USA. This project involved 152 scientists setting camera traps in a standardized protocol at 1485 locations across 103 arrays in 43 states for a total of 52,710 trap-nights of survey effort. Most (58) of these arrays were also sampled during the same months (September and October) in 2019, providing a direct comparison of animal populations in 2 years that includes data from both during and before the COVID-19 pandemic. All data were managed by the eMammal system, with all species identifications checked by at least two reviewers. In total, we recorded 117,415 detections of 78 species of wild mammals, 9236 detections of at least 43 species of birds, 15,851 detections of six domestic animals and 23,825 detections of humans or their vehicles. Spatial differences across arrays explained more variation in the relative abundance than temporal variation across years for all 38 species modeled, although there are examples of significant site-level differences among years for many species. Temporal results show how species allocate their time and can be used to study species interactions, including between humans and wildlife. These data provide a snapshot of the mammal community of the USA for 2020 and will be useful for exploring the drivers of spatial and temporal changes in relative abundance and distribution, and the impacts of species interactions on daily activity patterns. Search for vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons in pp collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for pair production of vector-like leptons coupling to first- and second-generation Standard Model leptons is presented. The search is based on a dataset of proton-proton collisions at s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector during Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. Events are categorised depending on the flavour and multiplicity of leptons (electrons or muons), as well as on the scores of a deep neural network targeting particular signal topologies according to the decay modes of the vector-like leptons. In each of the signal regions, the scalar sum of the transverse momentum of the leptons and the missing transverse momentum is analysed. The main background processes are estimated using dedicated control regions in a simultaneous fit with the signal regions to data. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed and limits are set at 95% confidence level on the production cross-sections of vector-like electrons and muons as a function of the vector-like lepton mass, separately for SU(2) doublet and singlet scenarios. The resulting mass lower limits are 1220 GeV (1270 GeV) and 320 GeV (400 GeV) for vector-like electrons (muons) in the doublet and singlet scenarios, respectively.

The second Higgs at the lifetime frontier

We assess the current coverage and the future discovery potential of LHC searches for heavy Higgs bosons decaying into long-lived particles (LLPs), focusing primarily on the production of pairs of LLPs with hadronic final states. These signatures are generic in dark sectors where a heavy scalar decays into pairs of lighter states which subsequently mix with the Standard Model Higgs. We show that a handful of existing analyses provide broad coverage of LLP decay lengths ranging from millimeters to tens of meters, and explore the complementarity between searches for displaced and prompt final states in several simplified models. For both heavy singlet and heavy doublet scalars, LLP searches typically provide the leading sensitivity in current data and exhibit the strongest discovery potential in future LHC runs. We further translate the impact of these searches into the parameter space of various Twin Higgs models, demonstrating that LLP searches are a promising avenue for discovering a Twin Higgs with displaced decays. Finally, we propose a variety of additional search channels that would improve coverage of the second Higgs at the lifetime frontier.
