Designing a Magnetic Measurement Data Acquisition and Control System With Reuse in Mind: A Rotating Coil System Example

Accelerator magnet test facilities frequently need to measure different magnets on differently equipped test stands and with different instrumentation. Designing a modular and highly reusable system that combines flexibility built-in at the architectural level as well as on the component level addresses this need. Specification of the backbone of the system, with the interfaces and dataflow for software components and core hardware modules, serves as a basis for building such a system. The design process and implementation of an extensible magnetic measurement data acquisition and control system are described, including techniques for maximizing the reuse of software. The discussion is supported by showing the application of this methodology to constructing two dissimilar systems for rotating coil measurements, both based on the same architecture and sharing core hardware modules and many software components. The first system is for production testing 10 m long cryo-assemblies containing two MQXFA quadrupole magnets for the high-luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider and the second for testing IQC conventional quadrupole magnets in support of the accelerator system at Fermilab.

Theoretical level energies, radiative lifetimes and transitions in W IX

The atomic states of the W IX (W{sup 8+}) tungsten ion lying below the W{sup 9+} ionisation threshold have been studied theoretically, employing the multiconfiguration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method with configuration interaction. The level electronic structures and their energies are presented. The electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) radiative transitions have been computed in order to calculate the radiative lifetimes of given states. Transition wavelengths, energies, and decay rates are also presented for selected high-intensity E1 transitions. The configuration interaction method was applied to estimate electron correlation effects. The aim of the present research was to fill a lack of atomic data for low-charged tungsten ions, which may be useful in low-temperature plasma diagnostics and may form the base for collisional–radiative modelling of spectra for low-charged tungsten ions.

Nuclear DFT analysis of electromagnetic moments in odd near doubly magic nuclei

We use the nuclear density functional theory to determine nuclear electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole moments in all one-particle and one-hole neighbours of eight doubly magic nuclei. We align angular momenta along the intrinsic axial-symmetry axis with broken time-reversal symmetry, which allows us to explore fully the self-consistent charge, spin, and current polarisation. Spectroscopic moments are determined for symmetry-restored wave functions and compared with available experimental data. We find that the obtained polarisations do not call for using quadrupole- or dipole-moment operators with effective charges or effective g-factors.

Quench Performance of the First Pre-series AUP Cryo-assembly

The High Luminosity upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) at CERN will include eight cryo-assemblies that are expected to be fabricated and delivered to CERN by the US HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (AUP) as part of the U.S. contributions to the HL-LHC. These cryostat assemblies are the quadrupole magnetic components of the HL-LHC Q1 and Q3 inner triplet optical elements in front of the two interaction points. Each cryo-assembly consists of two 4.2 m long Nb 3 Sn quadrupole magnets with aperture 150 mm and operating gradient 132.6 T/m. The first pre-series cryo-assembly has been fabricated and successfully tested at the horizontal test facility at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. Here in this manuscript we report the quench test results of the LQXFA/B-01 cryo-assembly. The primary objective of the horizontal test is full cryo-assembly qualification and validation of the performance requirements.

Rotating-Coil Measurement System for Small-Bore-Diameter Magnet Characterization

Rotating-coil measurement systems are widely used to measure the multipolar fields of particle accelerator magnets. This paper presents a rotating-coil measurement system that aims at providing a complete data set for the characterization of quadrupole magnets with small bore diameters (26 mm). The PCB magnetometer design represents a challenging goal for this type of transducer. It is characterized by an aspect ratio 30% higher than the state of the art, imposed by the reduced dimension of the external radius of the rotating shaft and the necessity of covering the entire magnet effective length (500 mm or higher). The system design required a novel design for the mechanical asset, also considering the innovation represented by the commercial carbon fiber tube, housing the PCB magnetometer. Moreover, the measurement system is based primarily on standard and commercially available components, with simplified control and post-processing software applications. The system and its components are cross-calibrated using a stretched-wire system and another rotating-coil system. The measurement precision is established in a measurement campaign performed on a quadrupole magnet characterized by an inner bore diameter of 45 mm.

Secular Resonances in Nonrestricted Hierarchical Triple Systems

In this paper, the averaged Hamiltonian of a nonrestricted hierarchical triple system truncated at the third order is investigated. First, each secular resonant term is studied. For the well-studied secular quadrupole theory, it is analytically reformulated in a different manner in our work. The resonance width is numerically determined and displayed on the √(1−e{sub 1}{sup 2})−√(1−e{sub 2}{sup 2}) plane (also denoted as the e-tilde {sub 1}− e-tilde {sub 2} plane). In terms of the octupole terms, we show that for a near-planar configuration of the system, considerable variations of both the eccentricities of the inner and outer orbits can be generated by a single resonant term. The resonance width for every secular resonant angle from the octupole terms is also numerically determined and displayed on the e-tilde {sub 1}− e-tilde {sub 2} plane. The results show that an orbit flip with a near-perpendicular initial mutual inclination is possible for each secular resonance. By displaying the resonance widths of different resonant terms on the same e-tilde {sub 1}− e-tilde {sub 2} plane, we intuitively show the overlap of different secular resonances. Then, the full averaged Hamiltonian with both quadrupole and octupole terms is investigated using the Poincaré surface of section, with a special focus on the orbit flip. For the cases we exploited, we find that the near-planar flip of the inner orbit can be either regular or chaotic while the outer orbit flip is generally chaotic.

Spin Squeezing as a Probe of Emergent Quantum Orders

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments can reveal local properties in materials, but are often limited by the low signal-to-noise ratio. Spin squeezed states have an improved resolution below the Heisenberg limit in one of the spin components, and have been extensively used to improve the sensitivity of atomic clocks, for example [1]. Interacting and entangled spin ensembles with non-linear coupling are a natural candidate for implementing squeezing. Furthermore, we propose measurement of the spin-squeezing parameter that itself can act as a local probe of emergent orders in quantum materials. In particular, we demonstrate how to investigate an anisotropic electric field gradient via its coupling to the nuclear quadrupole moment. While squeezed spin states are pure, the squeezing parameter can be estimated for both pure and mixed states. We evaluate the range of fields and temperatures for which a thermal-equilibrium state is sufficient to improve the resolution in an NMR experiment and probe relevant parameters of the quadrupole Hamiltonian, including its anisotropy.

Exploration of ICP platforms for measuring elemental impurities in uranium ore concentrates

Presented here is a look at different inductively coupled plasma (ICP) platforms including sector field, triple quadrupole mass spectrometric configurations, and optical emission spectroscopy. The goal of this paper was to convey the feasibility of trace elemental analysis of a uranium ore concentrate with varying ICP-based platforms. It was predicted that low mass elements would be better determined through optical means, or the mass collision/reaction technology of the triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, in comparison to high resolution measurements of magnetic sector-based configurations. Ultimately, it is difficult to achieve an “optimal” analysis of 20+ elements, for numerous samples, on a single platform, especially when time, measurement reproducibility, sensitivity, and robustness should be considered. The work presented here highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the respective trace elemental analysis platforms.

Tapered helical undulator system for high efficiency energy extraction from a high brightness electron beam

In this work we discuss the design choices and construction strategy of the tapered undulator system designed for a high energy extraction efficiency experiment in the ultraviolet region of the electromagnetic spectrum planned for installation at the Argonne National Laboratory Linac Extension Area (LEA) beamline. The undulator is comprised of 4 sections pure permanent magnet Halbach array separated by short break sections, each one of them housing a focusing quadrupole doublet and a phase shifter. The quadrupoles use a novel hybrid design which allows one to vary the gradient and match the beam transversely. Finally, the undulator tapering profile is optimized to maximize the energy conversion efficiency from a 340 MeV 1 kA beam into coherent 257.5 nm radiation taking into account the longitudinal current profile generated by the linac.

Exploring nuclear structure with multiparticle azimuthal correlations at the LHC

Details of the nuclear structure of Xe, such as the quadrupole deformation and the nuclear diffuseness, are studied by extensive measurements of anisotropic-flow-related observables in Xe–Xe collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.44 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are compared with those from Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV for a baseline, given that the 208 Pb nucleus exhibits a very weak deformation. Furthermore, comprehensive comparisons are performed with a state-of-the-art hybrid model using IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD. It is found that among various IP-Glasma+MUSIC+UrQMD calculations with different values of nuclear parameters, the one using a nuclear diffuseness parameter of α 0 = 0.492 and a nuclear quadrupole deformation parameter of β 2 = 0.207 provides a better description of the presented flow measurements. These studies represent the first systematic exploration of nuclear structure at TeV energies, utilizing a comprehensive set of anisotropic flow observables. The measurements serve as a critical experimental benchmark for rigorously testing the interplay between nuclear structure inputs and heavy-ion theoretical models.

Microextraction–TQ–ICP–MS for the Direct Analysis of U and Pu from Cotton Swipes

Here, the microextraction sampling technique was integrated with triple quadrupole–inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (TQ–ICP–MS) to directly sample and measure the isotopic compositions of uranium (U) and plutonium (Pu) from cotton swipes. Once extracted, the U/Pu were directed into the TQ–ICP–MS instrument for isotopic determination. Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and helium (He) gases were delivered to a collision reaction cell within the ICP–MS system for ion separation. The CO 2 reacts with the U + forming UO + which is ultimately separated from the Pu + ions of interest in the third quadrupole. This study demonstrates direct liquid extraction of U/Pu from a solid surface and subsequent measurement by TQ–ICP–MS in <60 s. Flow rates were optimized (0.3 mL min –1 CO 2 and 5 mL min –1 He) in the reaction cell of the ICP–MS system to maximize the Pu signal while minimizing U interferences (i.e., 238 U + tail and 238 UH + ) at m/z 239. Low levels of Pu (~2 pg) were deposited on a cotton swipe along with U at concentrations ranging from 20 to 200 ng. The 240 Pu/ 239 Pu ratio was measured with <7% relative difference from the certified value at all U concentrations. Major and minor U isotope ratios were also measured with <4% relative difference. This highlights that the microextraction–TQ–ICP–MS method can extract a mixed U/Pu sample directly from a cotton swipe and measure both isotopic systems without chemical separation.

Theoretical Evaluation of Metal–Ligand Bonding in Neptunium Compounds in Relation to 237 Np Mössbauer Spectroscopy

The 237 Np Mössbauer isomer shift and quadrupole splitting (QS) are powerful probes for the metal–ligand bonding of neptunium, a 5f-element of vital importance in the nuclear fuel cycle. A large set of Np compounds with different oxidation states (III) to (VII) is studied to investigate, by first-principles calculations, isomer shifts and the QS trends in relation to the Np oxidation state. Natural Bond Orbital analysis reveals that in addition to donation bonding to the 5f shell, participation of the 6d and 7s neptunium shells in covalent (donation) bonding substantially impacts the isomer shifts. The isomer shift cannot be interpreted solely by the 5f shell electron count. The isomer shift for Np(II) compounds is estimated to be in the range of 31–34 mm/s, less positive than for Np(III) compounds. For the QS, density functional calculations fail to reproduce the quadrupole splitting for some Np(VI) ionic solids. A multiconfigurational wave function approach reproduces the observed QS trends. The calculations give a semiquantitative interpretation of the trends for Np oxidation states (V) to (VII). Furthermore, the contrasting QS for standard and “reverse” neptunyl(VI), at the opposite extremes of the observed QS scale, arises predominantly from the different crystal environments.

R –8 Dispersion Interaction: Derivation and Application to the Effective Fragment Potential Method

The anisotropic and isotropic R –8 dispersion contributions (disp8) are derived and implemented within the framework of the effective fragment potential (EFP) method formulated with imaginary frequency-dependent Cartesian polarizability tensors distributed at the centroids of the localized molecular orbitals (LMOs). Two forms of damping functions, intermolecular overlap-based and Tang–Toennies, are extended for disp8. To obtain LMO polarizability tensors centered at LMO centroids, an origin-shifting transformation is derived and implemented for the dipole–octopole polarizability tensor and the quadrupole–quadrupole polarizability tensor. The analytic gradient is derived and implemented for the isotropic disp8 contribution. Relative to the previously implemented empirical EFP disp8 energy, the isotropic disp8 component of the interaction energy improves the overall agreement of the EFP dispersion energies with the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) benchmarks, reducing the mean absolute errors (MAEs) and mean absolute percentage errors for most of the databases examined in this work. Further, while the anisotropic disp8 can further enhance the accuracy of the EFP dispersion energy and yield smaller MAEs, significantly overbound dispersion energies are predicted by the anisotropic disp8 when the maximum element in the intermolecular overlap matrix is greater than 0.1, possibly due to the breakdown of the approximations made in the EFP dispersion derivation at a short range. For potential energy scan databases, the newly developed EFP dispersion model with isotropic disp8 yields the overall correct curvature and good agreement with SAPT benchmarks around equilibrium and longer but overestimates the dispersion interactions at a short range. While the overlap-based dispersion-damping functions produce better MAEs than Tang–Toennies damping functions, further improvement is needed to better screen the large attractive dispersion energies at a short range (overlap >0.1).

Broadband Circular Polarizers via Coupling in 3D Plasmonic Meta-Atom Arrays

In this work, we report broadband circular polarizers achieved by engineering the electromagnetic coupling between 3D meta-atoms in large-area arrays. The 3D meta-atoms are composed of bulk Au/Au nanocrystal (NC) bilayer helical arms, tailored in their number, length, and curvature through a one-step patterning process and postfabrication chemical and thermal treatments. By tuning the meta-atom array periodicity, hybridization originating from dipole–dipole and quadrupole–quadrupole interactions broadens the chiral response. We demonstrate circular polarizers operating at wavelengths spanning 2.5 to 5 μm, with a maximal transmission difference between left- and right-hand circularly polarized light of 43%.

Substituent and Heteroatom Effects on π–π Interactions: Evidence That Parallel-Displaced π-Stacking is Not Driven by Quadrupolar Electrostatics

Stacking interactions are a recurring motif in supramolecular chemistry and biochemistry, where a persistent theme is a preference for parallel-displaced aromatic rings rather than face-to-face π-stacking. This is usually explained in terms of quadrupole–quadrupole interactions between the arene moieties but that interpretation is inconsistent with accurate calculations, which reveal that the quadrupolar picture is qualitatively wrong. At typical π-stacking distances, quadrupolar electrostatics may differ in sign from an exact calculation based on charge densities of the interacting arenes. We apply symmetry-adapted perturbation theory to dimers composed of substituted benzene and various aromatic heterocycles, which display a wide range of electrostatic interactions, and we investigate the interplay of Pauli repulsion, dispersion, and electrostatics as it pertains to parallel-displaced π-stacking. Profiles of energy components along cofacial slip-stacking coordinates support a prominent role for the “van der Waals model” (dispersion in competition with Pauli repulsion), even for polar monomers where electrostatic interactions are significant. While electrostatic interactions are necessary to explain the optimal face-to-face π-stacking distance and to account for the relative orientation of one polar arene with respect to another, we find no evidence to support continued invocation of quadrupolar electrostatics as a basis for π-stacking. Our results suggest that a driving force for offset-stacking exists even in the absence of electrostatic interactions. Consequently, tuning electrostatics via functionalization does not guarantee that slip-stacking can be avoided. This has implications for rational design of soft materials and other supramolecular architectures.

Intercell moiré exciton complexes in electron lattices

Excitons, Coulomb-bound electron–hole pairs, play a crucial role in both optical excitation and correlated phenomena in solids. When excitons interact with other quasiparticles, few- and many-body excited states can appear. Here, in this work, we report an interaction between exciton and charges enabled by unusual quantum confinement in two-dimensional moiré superlattices, which results in many-body ground states composed of moiré excitons and correlated electron lattices. In an H-stacked (60 o -twisted) WS 2 /WSe 2 heterobilayer, we found an interlayer moiré exciton whose hole is surrounded by its partner electron’s wavefunction distributed among three adjacent moiré traps. This three-dimensional excitonic structure enables large in-plane electrical quadrupole moments in addition to the vertical dipole. Upon doping, the quadrupole facilitates the binding of interlayer moiré excitons to the charges in neighbouring moiré cells, forming intercell charged exciton complexes. Our work provides a framework for understanding and engineering emergent exciton many-body states in correlated moiré charge orders.

High energy electron diffraction instrument with tunable camera length

Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) stands as a powerful technique for real-time observation of structural dynamics at the atomic level. In recent years, the use of MeV electrons from radio frequency guns has been widely adopted to take advantage of the relativistic suppression of the space charge effects that otherwise limit the temporal resolution of the technique. Nevertheless, there is not a clear choice for the optimal energy for a UED instrument. Scaling to beam energies higher than a few MeV does pose significant technical challenges, mainly related to the inherent increase in diffraction camera length associated with the smaller Bragg angles. In this study, we report a solution by using a compact post-sample magnetic optical system to magnify the diffraction pattern from a crystal Au sample illuminated by an 8.2 MeV electron beam. Our method employs, as one of the lenses of the optical system, a triplet of compact, high field gradients (>500 T/m), small-gap (3.5 mm) Halbach permanent magnet quadrupoles. Shifting the relative position of the quadrupoles, we demonstrate tuning the magnification by more than a factor of two, a 6× improvement in camera length, and reciprocal space resolution better than 0.1 Å –1 in agreement with beam transport simulations.

Semiglobal diabatic potential energy matrix for the N–H photodissociation of methylamine

We constructed an analytic diabatic potential energy matrix (DPEM) that describes the N–H photodissociation of methylamine; the electronic state space includes the ground and first excited singlet states. The input for the fit was calculated by extended multi-state complete active space second-order perturbation theory. The data were diabatized using the dipole–quadrupole diabatization method in which we incorporated a coordinate-dependent weighting scheme for the contribution of the quadrupole moments. Therefore, to make the resulting potential energy surfaces semiglobal, we extended the anchor points reactive potential method, a multiscale approach that assigns the internal coordinates to categories with different levels of computational treatment. Key aspects of the adiabatic potential energy surfaces obtained by diagonalizing the DPEM agree with the available experimental and theoretical data at energies relevant for photochemical studies.
